Although there's no way it would have sold 5 million copies in this short a time, I'm certain the microtransaction bullcrap did harm their sales further. EA had better wise up, or they're in for very rough times indeed.
I've been busy with Uncharted 3 multiplayer as well...I'm 4th Legacy level 45 at the moment. Also in the middle of Etrian Odyssey III, Mass Effect 2, and PicDun 2. Hard to juggle so many games.
@Sammy: But the physics, graphics, AI, and especially controller-specific functions like they mention here...those are all part of the overall gameplay experience. Either the PS4 version won't be as advanced as it should be, or the other versions will look like crap in comparison, just like the Wii versions of multisystem games did early this gen before they realized they shouldn't bother for the most part.
@Knux: Yes, they are. Ubisoft ALWAYS tries to make people buy machines at launch by being on of the biggest day-one publishers.
So here, they say PS4 will be more immersive, but over on Nintendo Life, they claim the game will offer "the same experience" on all consoles. MAKE UP YOUR MINDS!
@ThreadShadow: Ah, it's fun looking back at all the negativity now that Sony's long-term plan has come to fruition. Back then, they were right...Wii60 was the best bet. Not so much now, though...PSWiiU is a much better combo...with 3DS and Vita on the side for good measure.
@Zombie_Barioth: You kidding? If the internet had existed in its current form when I was a kid, I'd more than likely have wasted just as much time on it then as I do now.
Yeah, love my PS3...bought the MGS4 bundle in 2008 just because I knew it was the last BC model...then it went YLOD in 2010 and I had to replace it with a Move bundle machine. It's still a monolithic decoration on my shelf, though.
Xbox is TRYING to turn into an "entertainment" machine...by the by, I resent the inherent implication that video games are not entertaining...but they really, truly aren't even doing THAT as well as PS3, for all the reasons that have already been mentioned. So I'd like to know who this "everybody" this guy mentions includes, exactly.
Well, he's right...the upcoming announcement is geared directly towards the hardest of the true "core" gamers (no the faux hardcore Microsoft courts). So yeah, I doubt it'll impact sales very much in the short term...but Microsoft can't hope to keep up at the rate they're going anyway.
@Stargazer: Spoilers incoming (obviously)! The 4th machine is really just a front for a secret path to the basement, where the gang plays in a rock band, the credits roll, and you earn that nice, shiny Gold Trophy. You unlock it by getting the final Token prize, which requires 311 Tokens. Note: There are 22 extra Tokens in the game, so 100% perfection is not necessary.
I got it, enjoyed it, and earned all the Trophies. As far as tutorials go...those are in Sly 4 proper, it seems. Started that today and the first levels of the minigames are easier and more instructional in nature. So while you can (and I did) do the Hackpack first, you might want to save it for later.
I have 53 Plats out of 3,833 total Trophies, but I don't play Killzone, so I certainly won't be getting this message. I know a guy who Platted 2 AND 3, though, so I guess he's proud. My hardest Plats include Sonic Unleashed and Eat Lead.
I hear tell that while the minigame types are taken from Thieves in Time, the levels themselves are just for this download...and with Trophies, that makes for a pretty sweet deal.
If they made it what Microsoft's Game Room was SUPPOSED to be, only better, I might be interested. But there's nothing here to interest me at the moment.
Oh, I think Ratchet and Sly are both still great. It's just Jak that hasn't aged well, IMO. Mostly because of the OBSCENELY hard challenges needed for legitimate 100% completion. If you can earn all the orbs in Jak 2 without cheating, you're a gaming god.
I'm with you, Sammy. I still like the first one, but I didn't even bother to finish 2 on the collection, never mind play 3. I have no problem with Naughty Dog moving on to bigger and better things.
"A reliable source close to the developer." This, written by a man who has worked directly with them. None too subtle there, buddy.
Of course, you might recall my opinion of the game, and I was sorely disappointed. Somehow, I don't much see a Vita port improving that situation much.
@Sanquine: You do realize that this man doesn't own the rights to those franchises, right? Microsoft still does, though I can't see them making much use of them at this point.
@ThreadShadow: No, it's definitely not. Doesn't even look like him, plus there's just no reason he would pose for a picture in front of a Kinect Sports: Season Two sign like that.
@Ginkgo: You probably are wrong, though. This man is respected for his work on real games, not Kinect trash. It seems far more likely to me that he got sick of Kinect and got a new job with a company that actually respects his talents.
Plus, it comes with a special piece of DLC for the game! Of course, so did the Wizard Edition, so...yeah. If you want that stuff, better to have both. Sorry to those who were unable to pull that off, but my copy came in today, thankfully.
Now I know that there IS a big twist ending, and I'm going to spend the entire movie trying to guess what it is!
...Wish I could remember off the top of my head where that quote was from. I wanna say Big Bang Theory...
ANYWAY...yeah, that's nice, I suppose. Games go through changes in development. Let's just hope the changes for the upcoming release make the gameplay more bearable.
@rjejr: Firing implies the employee is at fault, lay-off does not. At least, that's my perspective.
I think the game would have sold better if the beta hadn't been so terrible. I cancelled my preorder because of that beta! I did buy the game later on (at a discount, but still new) and have really enjoyed it. This game is a strong argument AGAINST demos and betas, as things can go so horribly wrong.
I do find the lay-offs particularly strange though, because the studio was HIRING just a month ago! They shouldn't have brought new people on of they were just going to have to kick them out so soon.
Mine is in the mail, too...already got my guide from Amazon for only $20! This attempt at an apology would be small compensation for me if my order had been cancelled...especially since I already HAVE the guide...so my sympathies to those in that boat. And all my hate goes to Namco for allowing this to happen and to PlayCanada for abusing the system.
Free-to-play CAN be handled well, IMO...Treasures of Montezuma and Jetpack Joyride being two good examples...but it can also be no-fun BS, like almost anything from Zynga. Microtransactions are fine when used right, such as in the two aforementioned games...but I'm not so sure it's a good idea in full-price games. I mean, I guess it doesn't HURT anything if it's not too intrusive and the game design isn't changed to make you want to buy your way out...but I wouldn't go assuming they won't make those mistakes at some point.
Uncharted 3 has a whole mess of microtransactions available for the multiplayer...but most of them are cosmetic, and even the special guns aren't really game-breaking. No major complaints there, at least.
Nope. I'd have jumped on an edition with a figurine along the lines of those found in the InFamous 2, Uncharted 3, and God of War: Ascension Collector's Editions, but not THIS beast.
@Paranoimia: Same here, man. DS3 is ideal for big people, too.
I honestly doubt they'll change too much...and if they do, it'll mean they're dropping any and all consideration of backward compatibility. After all, that's the single greatest convenience to come from the Dualshock line over the years.
I've been known to buy me some Collector's Editions, yeah. I especially like the figurines that come with certain Sony titles, and I look forward to putting Kratos on my shelf next to Nathan Drake and Cole MacGrath. But I don't buy them indiscriminately by any means...for example, I'm skipping it for Tomb Raider.
Well, Avalanche made the surprisingly fun Toy Story 3 game, and this appears to be an evolution of that formula, so I think it has very real potential to be better than Skylanders. But I'm not convinced that pricing HIGHER than the competition is the best way to enter a market. At this point, I'm cautiously optimistic.
It's simple future-proofing, and I'm all for it. Most games probably won't run anywhere NEAR 4K natively, but the machine will be able to run 4K Blu-Rays, and that'll probably help the format quite a bit.
@Knux: The horrible early years of the PS3 were planned for by Sony...working towards the long-term. Same thing they say they're doing for Vita, same thing they'll doubtless do for PS4. It'll be worth it, most likely.
Also, regarding development costs: I have it from a developer friend of mine that more powerful hardware will actually DEcrease the cost of development in some cases, because a lot of time and money is currently being wasted scaling back their projects to outdated hardware. In other words, they're ALREADY making the higher res textures and all, but then they have to figure out how to make cut them back to run on current hardware...a step they could well do without.
I bought my Vita day one for Uncharted, because I am an insane fanboy (more or less ). I had little else to play on it for a few months (not much of the launch lineup appealed to me), but now I have plenty of games like Ragnarok Odyssey, Virtue's Last Reward (not buggy like 3DS version!), PSASBR, Jetpack Joyride (game's more addicting than it has any right to be), etc. I bought a 32 gig memory card, and I felt $100 was sort of a deal, if only because the thing had originally been annouced at more than that. Sure, it's expensive, but for the experience you get with the machine, it's worth it.
If these guys can afford to make stupid business decisions in the name of making awesome envelope-pushing games, I'm all for it! I only wish more developers had that freedom nowadays...
@nathanuc1988: The solution is hilariously simple, though: Everybody who thinks there's even the slightest chance they'll ever play the game should just download the DLC while it's free. If they miss out, it's their own fault.
So why in the heck do the costumes cost so much, then? Surely they are less deserving of a high price-point than two new characters and a level...
Anyway, although I was fairly strongly against this game from the betas, I have found that the full release is much, MUCH better. I'm glad I got a good deal on it and I've been enjoying the game. I'll be sure to grab this DLC while it's free, so I don't very much care how much they'll charge after.
I buy used ONLY when it's an older game that isn't even available new anymore. I am a firm believer in supporting the developers of my games...if nobody did, the industry would kind of implode. If everybody did that, the mere availability of a game used would be an automatic indicator of inferior quality, and the people making the great stuff would all make out! So I do my part for that ideal, anyway.
@Paranoimia: I was reading along, just waiting for somebody to point that out. I figure it's the surest sign that Sony won't use this patent either. They may not always make the smartest business decisions, but I refuse to believe they're THAT stupid.

Re: PlayStation Vita Sales Quadruple in Japan Post Price Cut
I've seen two other people with their Vita's...my brother and a former coworker. Definitely do see 3DS's a LOT more often.
Re: PlayStation Vita Sales Quadruple in Japan Post Price Cut
Lower price results in more sales? WHAT IS THIS MADNESS?!?
Seriously, Sony...price drops elsewhere now.
Re: How Much Would You Pay to Play Shenmue 3?
Having never had opportunity to play the first two, I couldn't possibly care less. Re-release those on PSN, and THEN we might talk...

I checked PSN just for this, but I didn't get one. I'm a pretty big PSN spender...why'd they have to go and skip me?
