I get that graphics aren’t everything etc etc. But sometimes after all this ‘cross gen’ excuse making stuff which has gone on for rather a long time, I really want to know there are games coming which really make me think I’m playing games in a new generation when I look at them and walk around in their world. Graphically the benchmark is actually the Plague Tale sequel. It’s only 30fps I know, and I don’t actually like the game, but when I played the trial I thought: THIS is what ps5 worlds should look like when I walk around in them!
I’m a bit worried on that front tbh. The other night I did a review of all the stuff currently on the pre-order tab of the store. I felt that most of the videos advertising these games looked underwhelming graphically. Almost all of them looked to me like they would easily have been possible on a ps4 mid generation.
I’m not actually the greatest fan of these super hero games either tbh. I always wanted to like them but find them fiddly and a little irritating. That’s just a personal preference. Regardless of that, I do think there’s a massive onus now on games like this one to REALLY deliver on the visual front as well as gameplay etc.
@Brydontk They still aren’t part of MK so if they’re going to ‘steal the show’ can we not just make a fighting game for people from assorted other media and leave Mortal Kombat alone?
@Gooseman42 (Although the reality is that, as a long term fan, I’m just not that good at the game … I’ll accept the mantle of a ‘purist’.)
I think the concern is that this started out as the odd guest character (was it Kratos?). Now that it’s becoming a feature which grows in scale and prominence with every iteration, it’s long since begun to become quite irritating. You have fans clamouring for characters to be re-introduced to the games. You have Ed Boon trolling fans with fake teases about those classic characters but not making them happen. Then you have this constant barrage of what now seems to be as many guest characters from other media as they can shoe-horn in there.
The guy who pointed out that it sells is right I think. That will be why they keep doing it and it becomes a bigger feature every time. Then again - the cash grab dlc packs are sold as bundles mostly (unless you want to pay well over the odds). Buying a dlc pack which is literally half non-MK characters feels kinda wrong yknow.
I don’t know who this lot are and people are telling me they’re well known and good fits. But it can’t be said that it hasn’t been getting a little bit ridiculous at times. They added Rambo to MK11 for gods sake! Were fans calling for Reptile, Smoke, Havik, Cyrax? Or were they all out there begging for Rambo to be added to the game?
I absolutely love MK don’t get me wrong. But the roster has been getting weaker and weaker. In the last one basically all of the new additions were non-runners. Since the advent of the ‘kombat kids’, that’s another 3-4 slots taken up by samey characters with a nondescript military person with guns vibe. I just think there are a lot of fans out here who want quite a few classic characters to make the roster seem exciting again and adding in another 4+ random dudes from various media outlets isn’t exactly a step in that direction.
@belmont This is Mortal Kombat - a hugely long running and much loved fighting series. Since they started doing this, it often feels like people care more about which strays from some comic or horror film are going to be in them. What that actually seems to do is take up 4 or more slots which could be (should be) given to characters from Mortal Kombat … and there are ALWAYS some massive omissions from the roster which irritates fans of whoever they decide is out of favour.
Perhaps they should just make a fighting game full of characters from other media
Personally I’m long since sick of these guest characters and I don’t even actually know who any of these are so it feels like they’re really scraping the barrel.
I guess the reality is I’m fighting a losing battle because people seem to love them, they sell and they’re only gonna get more prominent as kombat pack after kombat pack is dominated by them. That would literally be 3 already!
I want them to use their wwe 2k engine to make a game totally dedicated to wrestling legends (rather than thinning that side of the game more and more with every iteration).
The last time this happened it was called legends of wrestle mania and, while it was cool it happened, the game had no real content at all and it was decided that a very basic control scheme was for the best (on the basis that it would be played by the ancestors alone).
@Keyblade-Dan The Kameo character thing worries me a bit too. I feel like there are quite a few characters I want to make a return and shoe-horning them into this ‘kameo’ bracket is an easy way of them making a return but (agonisingly) not as actual roster members…
Having never played a Diablo game before - I played the server slam beta at the weekend. Seems to me (the uninitiated) that there were quite a lot of cut scenes and story being told…
@PsBoxSwitchOwner Sure. That’s presumably a microcosm of console owners though isn’t it? Across the whole market I wouldn’t have thought it were THAT commonplace for people to own both…
@Uncharted2007 It was always a criticism from older people in my childhood: doing thjs on a screen … we used to go outside and actually do things yadda yadda yadda. I usually found that very irritating - obviously. But in this case … they’ve got a REAL point!
There are some mouth watering suggestions in the comments so far.
Knowing Ed Boon’s reputation, he will listen to many of these great ideas, tease quite a few of them rather coyly, then blatantly and shamelessly refuse to have them materialise in any way, shape or form…
Got to be honest - I haven’t really noticed a whole lot of performance issues, not on the level people are moaning about as though they’re absolutely wild. I also love the game
I tried it today. I just really don’t understand the combat at all tbh. Consequently it just feels like aimless madness with a lot of getting killed by people who presumably do understand what’s going on.
@Nepp67 lolz at the notion of ‘reasonable assessment’.
That aside - pretty much the ENTIRE identity of Saints Row was politically incorrect humour which was almost all just far too silly, over the top and self-conscious to realistically take offence over.
Frankly - I don’t see a patch note for sorting out the fact they made a sterilised and neutered reboot and until they rediscover some of the actual character I loved about those games (SR4 especially - unpopular opinion I know), I can’t see myself wanting to witness such a wet-blanket castration job first hand, no.
Never mind all the moaning above - this alone would make the showcase worth watching. But can they please stop inventing tedious new characters and give people what they want rather than Boon trolling fans about characters they’re asking for only to deliver some wastrel guest character from a horror film instead lolz…
This game has basically made me finally bother to increase my SSD storage. When you still play MK11 and Gran Turismo … it eventually becomes untenable to be packing 650GB of storage or whatever it is
@BeerIsAwesome (Without wanting to make a crude pun about filling holes,) it’s certainly doing that for me right now.
I understand there’s going to be monumental condemnation of the long grind for unlocks and progression. I actually don’t mind that hard grind and I don’t mind that it’s a slow burn.
I badly wanted a kart racer with longevity and personally think the gameplay is GREAT. What it does do is gives me a game I can put 45 minutes into of an evening, which is meaningful. In all honesty - a lot of working days result in me just not having the energy for games which require proper investment (most modern games).
There will always be other big games on the go; this is never going to be ‘the game I’m playing’ - it will probably always supplement something else and that’s what I want. That long slow grind to unlock and upgrade … it doesn’t worry me because I’m looking at the game as being a thing of considerable longevity anyway.

@Constable_What I have to agree. I actually find the game agonisingly annoying. I wanted to like it - of course I did! But I tried twice. Got somewhere towards the end of the main campaign. But … firstly every single time there’s a cutscene I find myself fidgeting and looking at my phone hoping it ends quickly. And … (shock horror I know) … I don’t actually like the combat. Sorry - I just couldn’t like it. Scenery looks great though, even if I find the bright colour palate a little grating for personal taste!
I’m enjoying what I’ve played of this game massively tbh. For me it’s filled a huge gap in the PlayStation library.
I know people who’ll WHINGE about life service and micros etc. on the flip side I actually like the fact there’s a MASSIVE grind ahead to unlock huge amounts of content. The game will certainly have longevity.
In terms of the actual game, it’s huge fun and I found that it’s a surprisingly great kart racing game engine. (Reviews will probably disagree with me)!
Finished RE4 yesterday. It was beautiful. As usual with RE games, I find the industrial final section a little bit of a drag but I’d still give it a 9. The plat trophy looks intensely demanding so I have no interest in that.
I’ll mostly be watching the snooker at the weekend but I’ll fiddle around with GT7 (yet to find myself getting into it) and Planet Coaster (same goes for that really).
@northaldinho I feel like I could write an academic essay about Control. Usually the only games along those lines are ones which are pure w*nk in terms of the actual game. Control functioned on both levels really really well and that was revelatory!
Control remains the only game on ps5 I have bothered to platinum. The second one will overwrite anything will overwrite anything as my most anticipated. I have never known a game combine nuanced social commentary with actually being a good action game!
I actually just can’t understand the psychology of gamers who buy a game and actually want to pay to fast track earning things the game is designed to make you play to earn.
I’ve been playing the ten hour trial. I don’t think 30fps is distracting. Nothing is really ever moving very fast!
It’s a stunning recreation of golf and overwhelmingly loaded with content. So much so that I would like to see a bit more ‘narrative’ to the game. Not an actual story but a direction which takes you through and makes it clear what you’re doing what for.
It’s interesting to me that they totally understate their pro golfers. So much so that their website said there would be 12 and there are 24 at launch. When you play the masters, three old legends hobble out to perform the traditional tee off to open the event. Why can’t we have matches against them in the career to unlock them as playable characters. The old TW games had stuff like that and that felt GREAT.
I’m not bemoaning it having loads of content. I’d just like to be ‘walked through’ a game path a bit more rather than just: HERE - have all of THIS; do what you like with it. That seems to be the modern way sadly.
I do hope they consider content like the above as well as new golfers, gimmick characters, legends etc as the dlc roadmap comes into sight…
@GamingFan4Lyf Play an older game for an extended period of time. I decided to play Skyrim again for example. Then, when you go back to newer games with full DualSense support … you REALLY notice how incredible it is!
@Sosapocka I know if they remade it now, it would have to be ultra serious with loads of live service elements wouldn’t it. Apparently whacky and silly and super fun doesn’t sell anymore
@freddquadros I think I’m gonna be ok with that. I’ve done two of the missable ones and made the right decision and you have one or two to play with anyway.
The one I did mess up was the one about the civil war. Sided storm cloak and made the wrong decisions in the council meeting. Ludicrous oversight from them tbh. I’ll have to load an earlier save for that which is tedious.
@Ear_wiG I didn’t expect to like Returnal. Downloaded it in a lull because it was on ps+, thinking it was something I would laugh at the difficulty of, say I’d seen it and delete. I got addicted to it for a few weeks! Ironically (perhaps?) it wasn’t ever the boss battles that caused me any trouble. At least 4 or 6 I did within 3 attempts. Some of them did take SO many attempts to get to them though!
Ever since I’ve kept thinking I’ll try one of these souls like games. But I tutor a levels in a college so I never feel like I have the energy. Been waiting for a holiday. Got a copy of Wo Long for £40. Gonna try!
I’m quite happy to see that. I got a copy but haven’t started it. I’m not usually a gamer who gravitates to the hardcore difficulty category of games so I feared I might get scared off rather early. Having said that I did beat Returnal last year so maybe I should have more faith!
Much like I didn’t really understand animal crossing … I’m afraid I am struggling to understand what the purpose of playing this is?
(I’m not slamming it incidentally. Play what you like. I just think I could do with someone explaining what it is people play these games for. Obviously I’ve never played them so my position is one of ignorance all ends up)
People talk about ‘graphics hungry casuals’ but when you see a game like Plague Tale Requiem and those absolutely jaw dropping graphics as you walk around quite densely populated spaces … you see what games could look like on this console and it is quite annoying that most of them don’t…
(I don’t actually like Plague Tale but I played the trial and now see it as a graphical benchmark. I do also know that it was 30fps and not being action heavy allowed it to be a graphical spectacle. But Jesus it’s about the only thing I’ve seen that REALLY has those graphics that tell you you’re in a different generation. And now I want that.)
A TNMT game that doesn’t absolutely HAVE to look like a throwback to playing on a game boy colour and can actually join the world of contemporary gaming? Guessing this is just a rumour someone made up on a night out …
Do the people moaning like wildfire about this he fact there’s a DLC roadmap just not play anything because they can’t get over the fact most games follow that model now? Christ!
In other news - I’m so up for this. Exactly the kind of thing which PlayStation has been lacking for years now!

I’m quite happy to see that. I got a copy but haven’t started it. I’m not usually a gamer who gravitates to the hardcore difficulty category of games so I feared I might get scared off rather early. Having said that I did beat Returnal last year so maybe I should have more faith!
Re: Disney Dreamlight Valley Can't Wait to Be PS5, PS4 King from 5th April
Much like I didn’t really understand animal crossing … I’m afraid I am struggling to understand what the purpose of playing this is?
(I’m not slamming it incidentally. Play what you like. I just think I could do with someone explaining what it is people play these games for. Obviously I’ve never played them so my position is one of ignorance all ends up)
Re: Disney Speedstorm Trophy List Is Pretty Grindy, But No Platinum on PS5, PS4
The Pushsquare online gaming naysayers are just WAITING for a platinum trophy which requires you to have purchased additional content to obtain.
Just wait for the vitriol …
Re: EA Sports PGA Tour Unloads a Wedge of Clean PS5 Gameplay
I’m really hoping it’s great. I’m not even into golf but I used to sink a lot of time into the Tiger Woods games they made back in the day.
Always felt they started to go downhill when they started to try to treat themselves more seriously. I miss the whacky elements!
Re: Ageing Hardware Like PS4, Nintendo Switch May Be Holding LEGO 2K Drive Back
People talk about ‘graphics hungry casuals’ but when you see a game like Plague Tale Requiem and those absolutely jaw dropping graphics as you walk around quite densely populated spaces … you see what games could look like on this console and it is quite annoying that most of them don’t…
Re: More Games Will Be Removed from PS Plus Extra in April
Has anyone ever heard of any of the games on this list…?
Re: Microsoft Thinks It Hasn't 'Pulled Any Games' from PS5, PS4
@thefourfoldroot1 People in the Uk should be used to this; we’ve had a Conservative government for 13 years …
Re: God of War Has Inspired a New TMNT Game
A TNMT game that doesn’t absolutely HAVE to look like a throwback to playing on a game boy colour and can actually join the world of contemporary gaming? Guessing this is just a rumour someone made up on a night out …
Re: PS5, PS4 Arcade Racer LEGO 2K Drive Sounds Superb, and It's Out Soon
Do the people moaning like wildfire about this he fact there’s a DLC roadmap just not play anything because they can’t get over the fact most games follow that model now? Christ!
In other news - I’m so up for this. Exactly the kind of thing which PlayStation has been lacking for years now!
