Any chance we will eventually return to news about games rather than making anyone who hasn’t shelled out their entire monthly mortgage on an upgraded console feel bad?
I kinda take issue with the comparative reviewing that’s going on.
Are we now going to do this thing where reviewers say about every game with rpg elements: ‘well it’s not Baldur’s Gate 3 so… that’s two marks off’???
THEY’RE TOTALLY DIFFERENT GAMES.
I’m sorry but we did this with Elden Ring. Through very tinted glasses may I add. For at least a year every open world wasn’t Elden Ring so… (I didn’t even think Elden Ring’s game world was quite as incredible as a lot of critics made out either.)
Just seems to me to be a very warped way to look at games, picking the current critic’s darling and weighing literally everything up against it, despite the fact they’re not trying to even be similar.
It’s a live service multiplayer game. How can there possibly be benefit to keeping it restricted to an in house ecosystem. I really really can’t see people saying ‘I’ll definitely get a ps5 over an Xbox because I don’t want to miss out on Helldivers.’
In fact - I find it quite strange it isn’t multi platform already tbh.
My jury is still firmly out on whether they can go solo to create a game which ‘feels’ great. The Medium really did not and I got very tired of dealing with its clunky feeling gameplay very quickly.
I don’t mind them but the thing is with these games - they take energy, concentration and serious investment to commit to. I can’t be doing that on a rolling loop one after another. So yes … there are just far too many of them.
What they have done to this much beloved IP in terms of the absolutely insane and brutally obnoxious monetisation of even the slightest thing is a long, long way beyond unacceptable. And that was the case before they decided they could sell THIS for £50…
@Scottyy I have absolutely no idea how anyone can say that about Control. It’s so so rare that a game manages to achieve top rate playability and production value with highly nuanced academic commentary on the modern world!
In fairness it is kinda great they’re adding major pros to the roster. The problem with tennis (and golf) games is that it’s always been impossibly costly to license enough players.
I don’t think that last EA PGA game managed to add any additional pros but they’ve already added a big name.
@Futureshark Agreed. I’ve said several times they now seem to be on a crusade to laud extremely bizarre indie games and put down anything from a big publisher.
One of them is almost certain to be Planet Zoo 2. It has a huge cult following and they’ve nearly reached the end of what they can do with it without giving their community what they consistently request: flying mechanics and fully aquatic animal mechanics.
As an IP it’s made them absolute fortunes because the steady release of dlc packs is just a guaranteed money-printing machine. There’s no way they aren’t in the process of making a sequel…
So … hear me out and don’t come for me - ok! I’ve been really really tired recently, to the point that I’ve only gamed at weekends.
That creates a problem cos after a week at work, you’re not in the rhythm of the game you were playing anymore.
So…
AC Valhalla gets released on ps+. It’s mindless. Mostly it involves clearing markets off your map to fulfil a time honoured gameplay loop.
Yes- it’s uninspired. Yes - it’s very tedious at times in terms of narrative. Yes - I understand ALL the criticisms of it and the Ubisoft formula. But … I don’t have to think and I can put several hours in every evening.
Now I’m going for the f***ing platinum and platinums aren’t even my thing. Sorry to all the hive minds I’ve offended by saying so. Over. Out.
This game is actually really good. I stopped playing it because it needed more playlists. So I put it on hold while they bulk that out and will go back to it. Don’t really understand the vitriol - it’s a solid game; not exceptional but very good single player experience with a decent amount to do. These days I think a lot of people just look at the dev and churn out some party line about their games. Sigh
They seriously haven’t aborted this abomination they’re calling invasions. It’s the most uninspired grindfest imaginable and what makes it all the more galling is that the reward for hours of grind is the chance to unlock the most tedious palate swap skins. Then you look at all the cool nostalgia skins they’ve made, which you have to pay about £27 a time for or whatever they think they can charge. Christ what a sh1tshow
@Ken_Kaniff Especially visually - it’s a big step back from ghost and for a ps5 game, several years in, I struggle to get over finding that disappointing.
@__jamiie I played it up until some boss which was a giant plant thing facing the camera. I found the final phase of that infuriating and it wasn’t the kind of game I was willing to keep trying to beat it for. (Ie - I think I tried all of twice lolz)
Blizzard make toxic changes to meta, taking the game further and further from its roots, in yet another bid to keep the cash cow spinning. Unexpected … eye roll
I’m rather happy about this cos I do have a copy of the ps4 game on disc and never played it. Consequently I’ll be all over it for £8!
I played the first one and did like it but I’m not as head over heels for Naughty Dog Games as some. For me I play one once in a while, complete it on a middling difficulty and say I’ve seen it and it was nice - yknow.
I’m not into stealth games cos they wind me up. But I played the trial of Requiem and for me it actually set a benchmark for ps5 graphics. Jesus does that world look alive and inviting!
I’m not sure I understand what’s SO boundary breaking about it. I must be missing something.
I get that there’s a lot of choice in chats and stuff and things can be approached lots of different ways. Perhaps it’s that most of those ways never occur to me and I just talk to people, make decisions and fight people in the way of my objective. I’m yet to see what is quite so groundbreaking apart from there being lots of options to choose from.
It’s the skins which do my head in. There’s a massive and nostalgic heritage of skins for them to tap into. The single player mode (a huge grind) let’s you basically unlock skins which dress every character as the themed character that month, while there is this rotating conveyor belt of beautiful skins harking back to older games, each one asking you to cough up money while there is no option at all to play to earn them.
It’s literally sickening that one of my very favourite IPs has gone so far down this path that it seems totally irredeemable.
@Olmaz Agreed. In fact at times the visual design winds me up cos I’m battles it becomes hard to separate things if areas get conglomerated. I think it’s a great game - perhaps not quite as great as many think it is. But visual design??????
@Nintendo4Sonic They can resist by not buying it (which won’t bring about change because it’s a trend which can’t be fought anyway).
It’s just intensely tedious to have to read comment after comment after comment saying exactly the same thing over and over again on EVERY single article relating to this game …
Oh look - an article on Alan Wake 2. Did you also send an email alert out to everyone who likes to routinely post repetitive comments about there not being a disc version?
@Jayslow I think after I’ve shamelessly purchased SO MANY games in September and October (needlessly at full release price) … I probably won’t need any new games until next September
I’m so happy this is being so well received. I’m not going to read the comments because I don’t want to trawl through 30 people whining about digital only releases but I absolutely LOVE Remedy - I think they’re my favourite dev.
The ps5 version of Control was the first time I really FELT haptics. I thought it was great so no surprise here.
On another note - do the ‘I don’t buy digital only games’ brigade HAVE to post literally the same comment on EVERY article relating to EVERY digital only game? We get it ok!
@Enuo Eurogamer said a AAA game which isn’t in 2D and about being as much of a weirdo as possible on this earth was great? Did someone feed them coca leaves for breakfast?

I find it quite torturous that they’re putting the Time Splitters games on. I wanted a remake so bad!
