Re: Talking Point: Should All PSN Games Include a Platinum Trophy?

fchinaski

Hell no. The trophy system is already unbalanced enough as it is. For instance: it makes no sense that I can get a plat on The Walking Dead simply by playing through the game while on MK9 I need to pratically abstain from living if I want to get it. It would be nice to have a different trinket for non-plat games, though, since, as someone said above, 100% just seems less satisfying.

EDIT: Oh, and don't even get me started on online trophies that make games with online modes impossible to plat once the online community dries out. They should be on a whole different list or inexistent.

Re: Battlestar Galactica Writer Penning Sony Santa Monica's PS4 Project

fchinaski

Thank God it is not GoW related. I really think Santa Monica should give the GoW universe a rest for at least another two years — and even so I'm skeptical that the series should go on as it is.

If they did anything GoW-related on the beginning of the next-gen cycle, I highly doubt that they would be able to inovate in terms of graphics or gameplay — last generation mentality/development ideas would be just too close for comfort IMHO.

Re: Angry Birds: Star Wars Finds the Force on PlayStation 3 and Vita

fchinaski

Wow, "let's make as much money as possible before the novelty runs out!"

Jokes aside, I can't see the point of playing this on the big screen, but the Vita port might be interesting.

But what really doesn't make no sense AT ALL is selling this in a plastic box at a high price point as if it was a full-fledged gaming experience. This is meant to be a cheap time killer you download for a couple of bucks on your phone/portable system (which is perfectly all right by me). What annoys me is trying to turn this into more than it really is.

Re: Talking Point: The Increasingly Complex Issue of Used Games on PS4

fchinaski

"Always" online + DRM + region lock will make the XBox One really unpopular on booming markets such as Brazil. Specially if the trade-in options are restricted to specific game stores that don't even exist in those countries. Not to mention that smaller releases often can only be found used on eBay after sometime... the need to purchase a code for an old used game will push these smaller titles to oblivion after new copies become rare, it seems to me. It all seems so wrong in so many levels that I don't even know where to start. Here's to hoping that Sony handles this in the best possible way for us gamers.

Re: Reaction: PS4 vs. Xbox One - Moving in Different Directions

fchinaski

I'm impressed with how little importance was given not only to game releases, but to everything related to them. Will physical copies still be the main form of distribution, or will MS focus more on digital releases? Will the games run at 1080p with solid framerate? How much of those 8G of RAM will be sucked by the integrated system and how will it affect the games themselves?

And I agree that it was massively oriented to the American market. MS played it very safe with all that sports/cars/CoD stuff (which leaves me cold, BTW, since I couldn't care less for any of those).

Up to now, there's not a single reason to buy one for me.

Re: Review: Dragon Fantasy: Book I (PlayStation Network)

fchinaski

@ShogunRok I totally understand, but the thing is that older DQ games, for instance, also required tremendous amount of grinding, and I think the developers wanted to do the same. I know that it seems pointless in this day and age, but I guess that's the spirit. You really have to excuse the grinding in order to enjoy this kind of old-school throwback subgenre, because if it was quicker to level up the game would be easy to the point of being boring — since there's not much more to it other than explore dungeons and get stronger to tackle bigger enemies. I know it's a strange kind of thing to enjoy, but there's already a lot of modern RPGs that don't require any grinding at all, DF just isn't meant to be one of them!

Re: Review: Dragon Fantasy: Book I (PlayStation Network)

fchinaski

I bought it for iOS last year and highly recommend it if you're in to real traditional gameplay (think Dragon Quest series) and don't mind the grinding (IMHO, it can't be considered a flaw here, it wouldn't be the same if this major trope was absent). Suffice to say that most of the dialogues and text left me with a smile on my face.

Re: So, God of War: Ascension Supposedly Cost $50 Million to Make

fchinaski

I did purchase it in the first week and I'm playing it currently, but I must say I'm not very impressed. I find it to be the weaker title in the series storywise (couldn't care less about the Furies and how can THAT be more interesting than overtaking Olympus?) and the gamepay doesn't bring anything new to the table other than "elemental blades" (meh). For me, boss fights and set pieces seem to be trying too hard to impress us, but they all seem lackluster in comparison to the ones in GoW III (the opening battle with Poseidon in that one made my jaw drop, but the one in Ascension... not so much) — maybe that's what happens when you push things to unheard-of levels of awesomeness: you just can't do it again by doing the SAME THING with minor differences. Still have to finish the single player mode and try the multiplayer, tough.

Re: Rayman Legends Leaping onto PlayStation 3 in September

Michael Ancel, few months ago:

“What surprises me with Wii U is that we don’t have many technical problems. It’s really running very well, in fact. We’re not obliged to constantly optimize things. Even on the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions [of Origins], we had some fill-rate issues and things like that. So it’s partly us – we improved the engine – but I think the console is quite powerful. Surprisingly powerful. And there’ a lot of memory. You can really have huge textures, and it’s crazy because sometimes the graphic artist – we built our textures in very high-dentition. They could be used in a movie. Then we compress them, but sometimes they forget to do the compression and it still works! [Laughs] So yeah, it’s quite powerful. It’s hard sometimes when you’re one of the first developers because it’s up to you to come up with solutions to certain problems. But the core elements of the console are surprisingly powerful.

"And because we’re developing for Wii U, we don’t have to worry about cross-platform optimization.

“We can push what the console can do; push it to its limits. And of course, we have a new lighting engine. In fact, the game engine for Origins was mostly just classic sprites in HD, but now we can light them and add shadows and all these things. So there is some technical innovation with the engine itself."

Is it not funny to read this now? I highly doubt that the PS3 and XBox will receive a watered down version or that they can't handle the new engine. Developers should really think before they talk,

Re: Talking Point: What if the PS4 Is Not Backward Compatible?

fchinaski

For the first time, I'm not in the least worried about backward compatibility, but that's just because I plan to keep my PS3. My main concern is about how they are going to deal with trophies. It would be very nice to have all the PS3 trophies and new PS4 ones in one place. I hope they don't plan to mess with our PSN accounts, creating some kind of PS4 exclusive account or something.

Re: Corpse Party: Book of Shadows Sets a Spooky Date

fchinaski

@Sanquine
Firstly, this is a 2011 game that only got localized now.

Secondly, I totally undestand that you want more Triple A VITA games, but to say that every game should look like Uncharted is a somewhat narrow-minded view on what games should be as a whole. Different strokes for different folks, not everyone puts state-of-the-art graphics above all else.

Thirdly, it's a good thing that a game that could easily be overlooked by the Western market gets to be released at all. No matter if it's a PSP game that can be played on both the PSP and the VITA.

Finally, I don't even see the point of arguing that a game like Corpse Party should look different from what it is.

Re: Sony Bets the Bank on 4K Technology at CES

fchinaski

It took me years to invest on a Full HD television, so I'm in no rush to jump into the 4K wagon. 1080p looks incredible enough for me anyway. I believe the PS4 will support 4k, but my bet is that the games themselves will run natively on 1080p while Blu-ray films will take advantage of the 4k resolution. But we'll see.

Re: Review: The Walking Dead: A Telltale Games Series (PlayStation 3)

fchinaski

Just received yesterday my collector's edition from Gamestop (couldn't resist the Compendium One bundle). Started playing and had to force myself to stop, otherwise I would have played it in one sitting, in spite of having other things to do! Very gripping indeed!

I agree 100% with the review so far, and yes, there are some glitches and the game stutters between the scenes, which can be annoying. Also, the loading times are a bit too much, especially in a game that relies so much on immersion like this one.

I have another small complaint, which in the end is inconsequential to the experience itself, but I would rather that Telltale Games didn't include trophies on this one, because they are really silly. Every single one of them is story-related (namely, you get one after completing a chapter), and you even get a Platinum at the end! I really don't see the point.

Re: PlayStation 3 Owners Revolt Over Firmware Update 4.30

fchinaski

The Singstar icon didn't bother me, and I didn't even knew it would load if the drive was empty, since I always have something there. I haven't had the time to look more closely, but it appears to me that the trophies are online-only now, am I right? I got the impression that they've removed the option to acquire the trophies offline and then sync them afterwards, is that so? Because, if that's the case, this is VERY annoying and worrying, because sometimes my internet connection is not that reliable (as is the case with millions of others out there I'm sure).

Re: Redesigned PlayStation Store Launches from 17th October

fchinaski

Thank God. Navigation on the Playstation Store is horrible as it is. I'm glad that this revamped version solves issues that shouldn't be there to begin with, such as the horrid search system and the inability to sort content by price. The latter is particularly useful when you have "loose change" that you can spend on a good Mini, for instance.
