Re: Netflix's Live-Action Resident Evil TV Series Debuts This July

I don't know how I feel about this. I love videogame TV shows and movies. I don't really play Resident Evil games, but I watched that Raccoon City movie recently. It was so bad that it was good, so maybe this TV show will be the same, but I probably won't watch it because I have shows that I really want to watch that I never quite get round to as it is.

@Uncharted2007 Hulu seems like the natural casualty of the streaming wars. Isn't it owned by Disney now? There's maybe space for Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime, but even Apple struggles to get subscribers and Peacock and Paramount can just forget it.
The good thing about the contracts is that you can easily unsubscribe and watch the things that you love on each service.

@GorosBat Their reviews are often a lot lower than I would give a game. Gameinformer had/have great reviews, but the community is totally dead there.
A lot of reviewers are reviewing from a technical sense almost as if they are marking the game down for bad graphics, an unoriginal story, and repetitive gameplay, so I can see how they come to the scores that they do. However, I don't think that many game reviewers consider games that are more than the sum of their parts. Take the Yakuza series, for example. There are so many flaws that I can point to with those games, such as not being fully voiced, often having a lot of bloat, poor tutorials, lack of focus, in some cases, substories that are not making up the numbers, and tedious gameplay (the unskipable random battles, the turn-based combat in Yakuza 7). So for Yakuza 6, which is my favourite game, maybe of all time, I can see why people would give it a 7 or an 8, but to me it is a 9 or 10.
The last game I played was Warriors Allstars. It's a solid 6 or 7, but I'd prefer that to many conventional 8s or 9s. Actually I'm going back into the backcatalogue of Koei Temco to find some games that I can enjoy.

GT7 being an exclusive I probably won't ever play made me wonder what was the last Sony game that I played. It was the last of us part II. There have been so many Sony games that I could take or leave, like Returnal and Demon Souls remake, along with games that I barely notice exist like MLB the Show and games like Spiderman I have no interest in.
Just a few years ago I feel like I was playing basically everything Playstation Studios game.
Not having a PS5 has made this worse, because I really want to play Ghost of Tsushima and Nioh Collection and will definitely get round to Horizon eventually, but I can't help thinking Sony is making fewer games that take my fancy. Not sure if that is true though!

@Colour We still talk about indie game now. They usually have lower expectations and price attached to them, but they also have the freedom to sometimes try something new, but there are also a whole lot of indies that just feel generic, even though they may all be passion projects.

Re: Timeless PS3 Title Journey Is 10 Years Old Today

@RBMango I thought it was pretty good, but I don't get people calling it one of the greatest games ever made. I guess you had to be there. In general, I think people saying a game is so great before I played it raises expectations and that reflects badly on the game when it doesn't match those expectations. I played Journey when it came out on PS4 and I really enjoyed it for the journey, but I was barely impacted by the defining characteristic of interaction with other players. For me, it was like "oh there's another guy like me, that's somewhat interesting, but I want to continue on my path".

@Porco I stand by what I said when I said "FFVII remake had a fairly smooth development compared to some of their other games", without contradicting what you said. It was kind of a joke, because the development of FFVII remake was a mess, but still better than FFXV and probably some other Square games like the Avengers. At least the development of FFVII remake resulted in a great game. I think the decision to split up the games definitely left Square with a lot on their plate, and really feels like anpther example of mismanagement. I'd argue that it's too soon to judge if it was a cynical move to split the game into two or three parts.
I think there is clear proof that Square are getting better at managing development. Clearly, they have a handle on their engine now and can get some games out in a reasonable time frame. They don't seem to know what they are doing with their Western studios, although they have published some great games.
I think there is a general problem when a developer like Square, who do not have a solid handle on production, acquire other developers (especially when those developers are in foreign countries with a whole different culture).
It should be a cause for concern with Microsoft, who don't have much of a proven track record with delivering quality software and now they are acquiring dozens of teams, mostly opportunistically because those companies were mismanaged.
Sony on the other hand, has a much more measured approach. It would be interesting to see Sony acquire Square because maybe they could organize production better and bring back Sleeping Dogs!

@jrt87 The other thing is that the war in Ukraine has woken us up to reality and shone a light on stupid policies pursuing not zero that assume that importing oil from across the globe is better for the planet than getting it locally. These people hold conflicting views that just don't go together. Like you say, the connecting thread is whatever is in the media zeitgeist.

@Porco I hear what you are saying, but regarding the demos for this game, it is not just a marketing ploy, it is how Team Ninja develop their games like these that need a lot of balancing. It's a huge part of their development process. They take on the feedback and use it as a real-world test.
Square have been a total mess in the past. FFVII remake had a fairly smooth development compared to some of their other games!
They clearly don't know what they are doing with their Western studios. Why would they let IO interactive and Hitman go?! They have weird expectations on the Western studios for sales and push games as service on them, yet the Japanese studios do their thing.
Clearly the Western studios are treated like the poor relatives and they are not part of a wider whole.
Why did we get hitman, tomb raider, and Deus Ex Go games, but no Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest Go?
You see companies like Nintendo with Smash Brothers and Koei Tecmo with Warrior Allstars, and even PlayStation with Playstation Allstars and you can see that all these companies see their characters and IP as a shared whole.
Square Enix has a franchise that is just begging to get a sequel and it would be very suited to gaas, that game is Sleeping Dogs.
Square Enix seem to be getting there, they had to learn how to make games on time using a decent engine.
I love that they make games like the more niche JRPGs and I enjoyed Quiet Man. I thought it was a great concept mostly poorly realized, but I enjoyed it way more than many safe 7 or 8 games I've played.

@Rural-Bandit It's good talking to you too. I swear some people on here don't have any social skills!
The way I see it is that Microsoft is not content with the way Game Pass is as a business right now. By that I agree that they are meeting or surpassing expectations in many metrics, but it wouldn't be acceptable for Microsoft to stay at this level of revenue from this number of subscribers. Clearly, Microsoft is betting big on this model with the expectation of an explosion in revenue. There are still a lot of questions that can only really be answered by how game pass performs going forward.
I don't necessarily see this as an advancement in gaming. I don't know if we have had an advancement in music. Sure, I much prefer digital as I don't want to store tonnes of CD or create all that waste, but I don't like the streaming concept. I don't see the pressure towards moving away from albums as a good thing. I don't necessarily see it as a bad thing that bands make the majority of their money on merch and tours. I buy albums digitally and have a few bands that I'd like to watch live. The big negative about the all-digital future is that it takes away price competition from physical media, which inherently costs money to sit in a warehouse somewhere or on store shelves. Digital sales compete with physical, that's why they can sometimes be so cheap. Also, you can't share, swap, or sell digital. So it's obvious why all digital is not so great for gamers.
I was very reluctant on streaming TV/movies, but Netflix has impressed me with the quality of shows. With the amount of free time I have, I'll never run out of TV shows and games to keep me occupied even if I just subscribe to Netflix and PS+ and nothing else. The problem is that the content is really devalued (just calling it content devalues it) firstly by the ridiculously low price of Netflix, and also there is absolutely no anticipation as shows just keep on dropping often in one big chunk so you just watch the next show after the cliff hanger that would have kept you thinking all week in the old model.
Gaming news is another great example. Things were so much better in the magazine days. I used to get N64 magazine and it would be exciting for it to drop on my doormat and it would be all my gaming news in one special place. Now it is kind of an extension of doomscrolling that I've heard referred to as "gleefreshing", but it is just like a gatcha for news.
The other major issue I have with subscriptions is why I don't like all-you-can eat anymore. It pushes you to consume more than you actually want and usually has to be priced as if you will consume a lot. Then you have the problem of content moving off the service, so there is a pressure to finish stuff. I just get round to games when I find the time usually when the games are much cheaper and in a better condition to play.
I love technology and have a bias towards the novel, but it has to be better than what we already have to make a change worthwhile.

Re: State of Play Confirmed, Showcasing Third Party PS5, PS4 Games

Apfelschteiner

@shadow2k You make a lot of good points. For me the essence of Nintendo has never been about power, it was always about going their own way. At times it is incredibly frustrating that you don't get basically stuff like proper online play and trophies and most major third-party games don't come to the platform due to power constraints, but at other times the Nintendo vision really shines through. I can imagine going back to Nintendo one day because I hate the way Sony are getting censorious and I'm not impressed with their pivot to the West over Japan.
If Sega had bought BluePoint or Vicarious Visions or made their own studio they could really boss the remake arena. I'm really sad that they didn't follow through on the Shenmue remakes, but considering the half-hearted ports that Sega did for Yakuza 3-5 (there isn't even a pause option in Yakuza 3, which means I couldn't play it when there were any possible distractions), I guess it was for the best.
It would definitely be possible to make a Shenmue game in the spirit of the originals without making it incredibly tedious like 3 was. Not hand-holding players is back in vogue right now.
Sony could be quite good at marshaling Sega to maintain the special essence of Sega, while giving it that Sony polish. Just for the remakes and reboots, Sony would be an ideal parent company or just partner. Just imagine what Golden Axe could be in the modern era!
I haven't got hold of a PS5 yet, but I bought a few PS5 games or PS4 games to play on the PS5 that I am holding off playing, basically anything after the Last of Us Part II. There are already a tonne of games on the waiting list to get on my backlog!
