Of course the PS5 wasn’t sold on features alone, I certainly didn’t argue that it was. But the quote that you and many try to use as a “gotcha” moment, the one about generations, is not talking about PS5-only games.
We can go into another discussion about the PS5 only content so far for the first year if you like, I have had a great time personally with Astro’s Playroom, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Demon’s Souls, and Returnal. None of which can be played on PS4.
But that “generations” quote is being completely misrepresented by you if you are trying to use it as Jim Ryan referring to crossgen games. Use the whole quote and you see he’s not talking about that at all.
The point was you and many others have misrepresented that quote as if it was referring only to games being available on PS5 and not on PS4, when the actual quote is not about that. It’s about features the PS5 offers that are not available on the PS4 that adds to the overall immersion while gaming, such as the dualsense, 3d audio, and SSD.
One of the most misquoted lines of all time. Here’s the full quote if you’re actually interested in it:
“ We have always said that we believe in generations. We believe that when you go to all the trouble of creating a next-gen console, that it should include features and benefits that the previous generation does not include. And that, in our view, people should make games that can make the most of those features.
"We do believe in generations, and whether it's the DualSense controller, whether it's the 3D audio, whether it's the multiple ways that the SSD can be used... we are thinking that it is time to give the PlayStation community something new, something different, that can really only be enjoyed on PS5.”
Clear reference to the next-gen features of the PS5, the SSD/i/o, Dualsense implementation on games, 3D audio support, all features that the generational gap in consoles provides.
One thing is for sure, Mr. Hulst has been making moves. He seems like a forward-thinking individual. I think PlayStation Studios are in good hands under his leadership.
Killzone: Shadowfall could be included on this list no? I don’t think it received a resolution bump, but it plays at a silky smooth 60fps on PS5 where it did not on PS4.
I played it on PS5 and it was so much more enjoyable at 60fps.
The only thing it's going to do for an already-declining Bethesda is drastically reduce its number of sales compared to Skyrim by not being sold on Playstation consoles.
A significant percentage of Skyrim and Fallout 4 sales were on PlayStation.
It was a solid first year, I played and enjoyed nearly every first-party release: Demon’s Souls was incredible, Returnal is a game of the year contender, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart was alot of fun, Astro’s Playroom is a real gem that can’t be slept on just because it came included.
2022 looks like the year where things really get kicked up a notch. It’s going to be a huge year if Gran Turismo 7, Horizon: Forbidden West, and God of War: Ragnarok all drop in the same year.
Yeah I think this is a case of exclusive content that looks silly to non-fans of CoD, but to the people who love and play every entry yearly this might be of value to them.
Got a big UFC fight card to watch in a few hours, but if I have time to play this weekend I’ll be continuing my journey in the incredible The Last of Us: Part II, and maybe a little Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition on the side.
It’s also worth mentioning Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart can be played in Quality mode with 120hz enabled to render quality mode at 40fps instead of its normal 30fps. No reduction in visual fidelity and that mode has to be witnessed firsthand to be truly appreciated; it looks glorious.
It wouldn’t fit the criteria for this article, but it is a game that takes advantage of 120hz mode.
This game has 3.5x the views on Youtube as the second most watched trailer from the State of Play (Star Ocean).
It might not be very popular for gamers who frequent news sites, but it definitely has a large following. This might be a pretty big deal when it releases.
It looks better than the older ones that had you stationary and just checking cameras before, looks like a proper first person adventure.
@Voltan Huh, weird. If you go to the store and check the Deathloop deluxe edition it says PS4/PS5 underneath. I guess some of the bonus content can be used on the PS4 then.
@Voltan If it was originally $70 and now it’s $40, how is that a 34% discount? Or was it always a $60 title?
Edit: I see it in the store now, it was $60 at full price. For some reason I thought it was $70 full price but it makes sense as a crossgen game. Kinda forgot the PS4 version exists to be honest. Or maybe I’m just used to PS5 games costing $70 already 😂
It’s only third parties. Out of those, I’m really hoping to see more of Little Devil Inside. And I’m 100% confident Call of Duty: Vanguard will be there.
No doubt a strategic release with Ragnarok coming out next year. This will do big numbers on PC and get some new people interested in God of War as a series.
Returnal not in the running for Game of the Year is an absolute joke. Meanwhile Mass Effect is on there for a remaster of a series that old? Game of the year 2021? Pure sillyness.
That’s why I don’t get it when some people say they don’t mind XP boosters in games, and you can just choose to ignore them. Uh no, if they are in the game there’s always a good chance that regular XP progression was purposely slowed down by the devs in order to encourage these predatory transactions.
I’m glad I never touched this game, and never will. I can see SE offload Crystal to MS after they help them with Perfect Dark. Studio seems like it’s going downhill fast.

Re: Guerrilla Shares PS4 Screenshots of Horizon Forbidden West
Looks incredible for a PS4 version but there is a pretty big difference between those screenshots and the PS5 version. Can’t wait to play this though!
Re: Sony Launches Brilliant Accessibility Website for PS5, PS4
Great job Sony. The Last of Us: Part II has the greatest range of accessibility options I’ve ever seen in a game.
Re: Former Silent Hill Developers Announce Slitterhead
I was hoping for a bit darker of a horror tone, but I’m still gonna play it.

Re: Godfall's PS Plus Version Is All Endgame Content, No Story Campaign
So is it possible to get full trophy completion with this PS+ version? I’m assuming no, and if so, what a garbage decision. I’m not touching this.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Thankful for in Gaming?
I’m thankful for the one thing that gaming constantly reminds me of:
If you stick with anything long enough, you WILL learn it and figure it out. This applies to all things in life.
Re: Is Returnal DLC Being Teased by Developer Housemarque?
Returnal DLC would be welcome news indeed. I just need a reason to jump back in.

Pretty good variety, solid month overall.
I’m actually happy to get the lego game for my niece.

Re: Poll: What Game Will Win at The Game Awards 2021?
@nessisonett What a bold bet to make, considering you have an 83% chance to win by default.
Now if you were willing to bet your house on the one game that will win, that’d be impressive.

Cool, still haven’t played it after it didn’t get the best reception at launch. But I’m happy to upgrade to this enhanced version for free.
Re: The Game Awards 2021 Nominees Will Be Announced Next Week
Let’s go Returnal.
I think the nominees could be:
RE8: Village
Deathloop
Returnal
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
It Takes Two
Metroid: Dread
Psychonauts 2
Re: Poll: What's Your Favourite PS5 Game So Far?
1. Returnal
2. Demon’s Souls
3. Astro’s Playroom

Re: Poll: 10 Years Later, What Are Your Thoughts on Skyrim?
My opinion on Skyrim is pretty much the same as other Bethesda games: excellent role-playing and atmosphere with floaty controls and boring combat.
Re: New PS Store Sale Throws PS4 Games in the Bargain Bin
@captainaverage It’s still not patched in the NA version. It’s pretty much impossible solo although I’ve seen it done once I think by a real expert.
Still very much doable using two controllers in coop mode though. It’s how I was able to get the platinum.
Re: Video: Which Call of Duty Game Is the Best?
Modern Warfare 3 for me. I loved the Survival Mode and it’s the only Call of Duty I spent extensive time with and got full trophies for.
Re: Elden Ring Frame-Rates and Resolutions Detailed for PS5, PS4 Pro, PS4
Performance Mode all the way in a Fromsoft game. That 60 fps will be critical especially with online PvP.

MediEvil at $14.99 is tempting as a late Halloween pickup.

Re: PS5's Returnal Wins Its First Game of the Year Award
It has the best gameplay of any game I’ve played this year, and I love alien and sci-fi stuff. So yes, Returnal is my game of the year as well.
Glad to see it get some recognition and Housemarque has me eagerly anticipating what they do next after putting out a game like this.

Deathloop is already almost 50% off? Huh, might have to try that one sooner than I thought.
Re: Rumour: PS Plus November 2021 PS5, PS4 Games Leaked Ahead of Reveal
I hope that’s true. I’ve been interested in trying that Kingdoms of Amalur remaster.
Re: Little Devil Inside Confirmed for Tomorrow's State of Play Show
Great news! This is the only game I was hoping would show up tomorrow. It looks fantastic.
Re: Talking Point: State of Play - What Do You Want to See?

Re: Talking Point: What PS Plus Games for November 2021 Are You Hoping For?
I would be thrilled about getting Dead Cells or Stardew Valley.

Re: PS4 Exclusive God of War Releasing on PC in January
No doubt a strategic release with Ragnarok coming out next year. This will do big numbers on PC and get some new people interested in God of War as a series.
Re: God of War Sales Hit a Staggering 19.5 Million Copies on PS4
Pretty impressive numbers, especially considering it’s given away in the PS+ collection for all PS5 owners.

Re: GTA Trilogy Now Removed from PS Store Ahead of PS5, PS4 Remasters
Interestingly enough there is still a bundle on the PS store that includes San Andreas with GTA V, but not San Andreas individually.
Just thought it was worth mentioning as I checked for myself out of curiosity.
Re: Colourful Co-Op Adventure It Takes Two Has Reached 3 Million Copies Sold
I just got the platinum a few hours ago! Definitely one of the best coop games I’ve played.
