Re: Feature: 11 Games We Want to Play with PS4's Virtual Reality Headset

MadchesterManc

@splat I think it has the potential to be the next stage of gaming going forward. The only thing holding it back is that I don't think current games would work well with VR. The tech is going to require some radical new ideas to transpose the likes of Elder Scrolls etc into VR properly, whilst some genres like racing games & flight sims will be ridiculously easy. Sure VR could fall flat on its face, but there's genuine potential to innovate in numerous way with new experiences for an industry that's stagnated.

Re: Sony's Beta Testing PS4 Firmware Update 2.50 Now

MadchesterManc

I don't care about the Suspend/Resume feature to be honest. The PSTV does it and I haven't even used it on that in the few months I've had it. The Saturn & Dreamcast I have plugged into my TV beside the Ps4 both function perfectly fine without the feature too. Yeah, not really fussed myself. Since 3D bluray playback was added I haven't really been much bothered about firmware updates

Re: Sony Still Schtum on March's PlayStation Plus Update

MadchesterManc

Oh god, so Sony hasn't announced the IGC lineup yet....

This city is headed for a disaster of biblical proportions.
What do you mean, "biblical"?
What he means is Old Testament, Mr. Mayor, real wrath of God type stuff. Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling!
Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes...
The dead rising from the grave!
Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!

Re: Site News: Fill in Our Reader Survey and We'll Give You a Gold Star

MadchesterManc

I really hope the subscription fee doesn't become a reality, no doubt its in the survey to test the waters and see if its a viable option.Considering other gaming networks like Gawker were raking in hunders of millions of dollars a year in ad revenue, it boggles the mind where all the money is going if a membership option is even being murmered

These sites should be doing more for long term loyal readers instead of considering the notion of showering new readers with benefits for a fee

Re: Apparently, People Buy PS4s Over Xbox Ones and Wii Us for the Resolution

MadchesterManc

I bought a Ps4 as it's the only next-gen system that seems to have any potential this time around. I was actually still rocking a HD-ready TV when I bought the system and didn't get a 1080p set till a few months later. Resolution didn't make a difference for me (although I appreciate it more having a 1080p set now)

@Midzark You mean the party chat system? Aye you can chat to others on different games, even different system. I was playing Warframe once on Ps4 & chatting to a few people playing Killzone on PSVita

Re: Opinion: How Reviews Can Colour a Game's Reception

MadchesterManc

@get2sammyb you guys get goodie bags? After a year being in the good graces of Nisa, IFI, Marvelous etc there's been nothing of the sort I've seen, just preview & press event invites. I guess it's something the bigger publishers do. Although Warner Bros keep oddly sending invites to pre release screenings of Japanese movies in London

I prefer a written review myself. They tend to offer more of an insight than what I've sampled on Youtube. There has been quite a few times I've not really agreed with a review I've read though, started playing Transistor last night and I'm failing to see what all the praise was for so far from the gaming press, but that's part and parcel of reviews from any form of media I guess. With how subjectively biased some reviewers can be, it's best not to formulate an opinion of a game based in what you watch or read anyway.

Re: Talking Point: How Important Is Game Length?

MadchesterManc

@themcnoisy I just don't see that to be honest. There is no price hike or culling of content for games these days though, If that's the point of your analogy. Daytona & Sega Rally were both £49.99 on the Sega Saturn at launch and only featured a few tracks/few cars each. Those were 1st party exclusiveS too.

A games length isn't as easily quantifiable as people here are assuming tho. As I said in another comment thread, I've put more time into Child of Eden than I did Watch Dogs, and COE can be finished in a 2/3 hour sitting on your first run. A short game can easily outlast something ridiculously padded just by being a better game to plaY

Re: Talking Point: How Important Is Game Length?

MadchesterManc

Game length doesn't matter. What matters is how well the game itself plays. A short game can easily outlast one with hours & hours of padded content. Child of Eden is a game I constantly return to even tho all levels can be finished within 2 hours. It's simple to play, has unlockable collectibles, online leaderboards and dazzles in 3D. Why would I play a padded borefest like Watch Dogs, or something similar, instead?

Think of it this way. You have £1. You have the choice of a 6 variety pack of McCoy's or a 12 pack of ready salted Asda Smart Price crisp. Would you really buy the singular cheap value crisp over the better quality variety pack because you get more?

Re: We Need Different Types of Games, Says The Order: 1886 Developer

MadchesterManc

Daytona & Sega Rally on the Sega Saturn cost £49.99 when both games launched, and you could play through all they had to offer in less than an hour easily. Just offering a little perspective as noone here knows how that 5/6 hours of The Order is going to be, or if there's anything like collectibles to offer replay value - yet keep using length as a barometer of quality. That works so well for Ubisoft afterall I guess....

Re: Talking Point: Do Review Scores Have a Future?

MadchesterManc

@Azikira pretty much the same for me. Another good thing for scores is if there's a game you know nothing about that gets a decent score which you then read the review for to get more information on if it's appealing or not. Without a score, why would you care to give that game or review a punt? Not everyone has such a carefree existence they can spend hours reading reviews to find other games to try.

Getting rid of review scores was something I'd mentioned with a fellow at my site and its something that was dismissed quickly. People read your reviews if you consistently put out ones that are balanced & fair. If the reviews at your publication are poor, then people will just look at the score & jog on. The score is only a footnote afterall. As for Metacritic, I've not applied there or have any intention at the moment. With a website like that the score becomes the header instead of the footnote & your written review suffers accordingly. No extra traffic is worth that.

Re: Super Stardust Ultra Flies One More Time Next Week on PS4

MadchesterManc

Considering the a Ps3 version already has 1080p60 & 3D support with pretty much all those additional features mentioned in the last paragraph if you'd bought the DLC, I won't be dipping again for this even tho I regard it as the devs finest hour. The few extras aren't worth the asking price for previous owners

Re: Soapbox: Why We Need More Grounded Games

MadchesterManc

I think game world's these days are too grounded in reality, especially games developed in the west. A game like Infamous for example may have all the superhero shenanigans, but it's barely surreal running around a representation of current day Seattle, and the lore offers a decent enough explanation of how things have become the way they are that it's more of a 'what if?' situation. I don't think we get enough truly surreal games these days
