Re: Yakuza 5 Lays the Smackdown on PlayStation 3 Next Year

MadchesterManc

@get2sammyb announcement of the year. I'd like to think my co-editors big localisation push these past few months on my site & social media with a few prominent folks in the Yakuza fanbase had a little something to do with it. Who knows though, maybe it was always on the cards from Sonys 3rd party initiative afterall

Re: Talking Point: What Did You Think of Sony's PlayStation Experience Keynote?

MadchesterManc

Yall got a screw loose. Wall to wall games set for 2015 & folk still ain't happy. The notion that an individual's unfulfilled expectations regarding the keynote are Sonys fault is an amusing one to say the least.

Yakuza 5 heading west via Sonys 3rd party initiative is the announcement of the year

@get2sammyb that list is pointless as da Ps4/Vita havz no gamez because [something] didn't get announced

Re: Review: Metal Gear Solid (PSone)

MadchesterManc

Wow. I even thought MGS had cumbersome gameplay back in the day, so seeing a 10/10 for it now does tickle me a little. It wasn't until MGS3 that the series finally fulfilled its potential. But hey, that's just me.

Re: Watch PlayStation's Iconic Controller Evolve in Front of Your Eyes

MadchesterManc

You'll never beat the model-2 Sega Saturn controller (or the 6 button Mega Drive controller it closely resembles) but the Dualshock is a great design, testament to the fact its now being used in its fourth generation.

As for the DS4 battery life, Its never really bothered me. Since I realised that you can use your phone charger plugged into a wall socket, charging only takes an hour or 2 & it doesnt have to be tethered to the Ps4. Id recomend others give it a try.

Re: October NPD: PS4 Starts to Get Comfortable at US Hardware Sales Summit

MadchesterManc

@SuperCat Amusingly, Ive noticed it seems tied to framerates. Its simple to test on a game with a 30fps cap option as you can play it unlocked and hear the fan kick in after a while before locking to 30. Once locked at 30 the fan speed is reduced almost instantly. Ive tried it on TLoU, Killzone & Infamous and the Ps4 seems to run quieter needing less cooling from the fan when locked at 30fps.

Re: Talking Point: Is This Gaming's Most Disappointing Ever Year?

MadchesterManc

There's been a few blunders, but I can't agree with the notion that its been the most disappointing year of gaming yet purely on the return to form of the ol' stalwart of Wolfenstein & the Alien franchise finally delivering a quality game. Seems a bit of a barmy thing to insinuate for me, unless your a AAA fiend I guess...

Re: Review: The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth (PlayStation 4)

MadchesterManc

I think it controls a little bobbins tho, especially when using the right analogue to fire as it still only fires in 4 basic directions. Kinda flies in the face of the 'fast paced' notion when your having to shuffle around just so you can get into a firing line. Aside from that's not too bad, not had any decent power up yet though

Re: First Impressions: How Well Does Assassin's Creed Unity Actually Run on PS4?

MadchesterManc

@Mrskinner I remember Ubisoft saying the same thing about Watchdogs and that was pretty half baked even with the delay. I wouldn't be surprised if they are fibbing & Unity has only been in development for about 18 months.

Someone mentioned in an article earlier for Unity that it could be down to how poor previous entries have performed on PC and with these consoles being closer to PC than ever before, it wouldn't surprise me if that was the case. I remember Black Flag only making use of 2 cores, regardless of the user having a quad core or higher, so it wouldn't surprise me if they've clearly borked the ports to console from PC by not multi-threading the code to fully make use of the extra cores. If there's parity between the consoles, then the Ps4 is being underutilised and shouldn't be performing this bad. Pure speculation, but I'd hazard a guess that Ubisofts previous track record with regards to CPU optimisation on PC has possibly eked it's way to the console release of Unity

Re: Soapbox: Gaming's Greatest Fireworks Display Still Resides Inside the PS2

MadchesterManc

There's been a few other firework games for me worthy of mention. Boom Boom Rocket on the 360 is probably my favourite, playing more like a rhythm title, and another would be the one that came with the original Eyetoy Play (played similar to Fantavision) Lets not forget the Vita's Fireworks AR game either thats not bad for a play here & there. Never really liked Fantavision much myself tho, but I'd still give a remaster a try if it was priced well.

Re: Feature: How Has the PS4 Fared in Its First Year?

MadchesterManc

I think I'm the only person in the world that thinks the Share Play feature is a wonderful feature, that actually works, and it barely ever gets mentioned in Ps4 system articles anywhere. Features that showcase the 'Share' ethos Sony spoke of pre launch should be championed, not brushed under the carpet

Re: Evolve's Alpha Devolves on PS4 Due to Firmware Update 2.00 Issues

MadchesterManc

@get2sammyb I'm with you on this. To me it seems like a deflection as in "Hey its not our fault, it's theirs". It seems odd that they've had nearly a week of testing & on the eve of the alpha going live, there's suddenly a problem. PR gobbledegook isn't a useful means of trying to find the root of the issue unfortunately either. There's definitely more to it than 2k are letting on

Re: Who Let the Dogs Out? Watch Dogs has Shipped 9 Million Copies

MadchesterManc

Picked it up preowned at the weekend for £15 as it was cheap enough to try, I had been warned previously I probably wont like it by a friend. Well, they were right. A few hours in & I've given up on the game. Seems to have typical Ubisoft gameplay with the hacking aspect not being as fleshed out as I was hoping either, graphically it looked like a Ps3 port to me I'm not really a fan of open world games (Really enjoyed Infamous: First Light though) as it is, but after playing GTAV on Ps3, Watch Dogs just seemed mundane.

Re: Dynasty Warriors 8 Empires Marches an Army onto PS4 and PS3 Sooner Than You Think

MadchesterManc

@arnoldlayne83 It's definitely more tactical than Empires. Battles are played out with you controlling a squad instead of a single officer for skirmishes ie a group of archers or swordsmen for example, and you in turn gain XP in the different roles to customise (you can switch to a different squad on the fly during battle to mix things up) If anything it plays like Kessen 3 on Ps2 if you've ever played that. You may be able to find a copy of the original Bladestorm release on Ps3 for a relatively cheap price if you want to give it a go before the remaster hits with the added 'Nightmare' campaign.

Re: Push Scare: The Thing About PS2 Horror The Thing

MadchesterManc

Amazing game & slotted in perfectly to the aftermath of the movie. As a franchise its still going strong as I thought the prequel movie was decent too. I do have my PC version of the game packed away somewhere, might dig it out & see if 1080p60 makes it any better

Re: November's PS Plus Offering Is an Indie Game Extravaganza

MadchesterManc

@get2sammyb I got Resident Evil 2 and 3, Silent Hill, a few good minis (Trailblazer & Velocity being the most memorable for me) that i still play on the odd occasion, but I didn't think much of the PSN offerings back then though to be honest. The mini's tended to be better The added features like automatic downloading were a godsend then as I could get everything done while I was at work. Probably why I never really had as much of a problem with certain aspects of the Ps3 as others.

Re: November's PS Plus Offering Is an Indie Game Extravaganza

MadchesterManc

For the price of a single game a year, £40, I get access to 60+ games for the year. If even a tenth of those games are decent then it's money well spent. Sure if my subscription ends I lose the games, but for the price of a game why would I not continue playing the monthly IGC lottery? Amusingly, I've been paying for PS+ since before the instant games collection even existed which is Probably why I don't have entitlement issues when it comes to the IGC

Re: Bungie Aims to Shoot Down Criticism of Destiny's Story with the Game's First Expansion

MadchesterManc

So basically I've got to pay more for the privilege of having a narrative that doesn't resemble swiss cheese? To be honest I'd understand all this paid DLC malarkey adding in an actual story if Destiny was F2P, but I had to pay £50 for the base game if I recall. You messed up Bungie, and you know it yourselves.

@arnoldlayne83 Angry Joe's review was pretty much spot on for me. He usually gets it right with his AAA game reviews.

Re: Round Up: Your Ultimate Guide to PS4 Firmware Update 2.00

MadchesterManc

I've never really been too fussed regarding firmware updates as I've got so many devices that can do things I'd need that if the Ps4 launched and all it did was just play games I'd be happy enough. But that's just me. Looking forward to trying out the Share Play feature with this update, as soon as I can find someone who'll want to play some split screen coop on Plants vs Zombies. It's a little odd that nowhere has made any fuss regarding Share Play seen as it's something I'd consider to be a next gen feature, still can't believe that themes has actually had more coverage than Share Play to be honest

Re: Why Is Sony Taking So Long to Release PS4 Firmware Updates?

MadchesterManc

This mythical standby downloading sounds awe inspiring. My Ps4 will download the occasional game update & install in standby mode (not all the time oddly enough), but has never once downloaded & installed a firmware update - always prompting me with the download when I boot the Ps4 (luckily 121Mb net means it takes no time at all). For a guy that has everything activated for standby mode & has always left the Ps4 in standby mode, it would be amazing if it actually did everything its supposed to do

Re: Does LittleBigPlanet 3 Look Much Better on the PS4?

MadchesterManc

@thedevilsjester Thats the point I've been getting at. Like I said, the improved graphics are a gimme - but aside from the visuals it seems pegged at the same level as on Ps3 for almost everything else. The additional resources of the Ps4, as well as aspects like the touch-pad, should be able to offer much more for the creative folk that build gems on these titles. Instead it just seems to be a prettier version of whats on Ps3. No doubt the cross-play aspect has brought on this parity, but it is a little disappointing as a LBP developed for the Ps4 first & foremost could offer a lot more to the creative minds that use the tools on these games.

Re: Talking Point: Do You Ever Stump Up for Season Passes?

MadchesterManc

I tend to not bother much. I've only ever bought 2. Killzone: Shadowfall was offering a decent amount of content for the price (£15.99), and Aliens: Colonial Marines as the season pass was on sale on Steam (£9.99) & I wanted to play Bug Hunt. Then again I never really buy DLC, so the whole point of season passes is kinda lost on me

Re: Does LittleBigPlanet 3 Look Much Better on the PS4?

MadchesterManc

@thedevilsjester I was looking at it from a purely technical perspective. There's always a reason to bother from the viewpoint of sales, marketing etc but I meant why bother as it doesn't seem to take any advantage of what the Ps4 has to offer, presumably due to cross-play with the Ps3 & more than likely being a port from the Ps3 as opposed to the other way around. The visual improvements are a gimme afterall.

Re: Does LittleBigPlanet 3 Look Much Better on the PS4?

MadchesterManc

While I'm not going to complain about sharper & more detailed visuals, the fact that it seems to be the only difference leaves me wondering why bother with the Ps4 version. If its the same in all other respects, then its a missed opportunity. The bountiful amount of RAM over the Ps3 should be allowing creators to create more elaborate levels/games on Ps4, yet it seems pegged at the same level as Ps3.

Re: Sony Investigating Online Issues as PSN Plunges into Darkness Again

MadchesterManc

@WARDIE Did you read the whole of my comment or just the first few words? I think you musn't have got the memo at E3 last year when Sony was discussing the online gaming aspect being introduced for PS+ that would put whether a game would be behind the paywall or not at the discretion of the publishers. So yeah, infact they charged for PS+. No doubt with most retail releases putting their online portions behind the paywall, PS+ might as well now be regarded as required for online play. That doesn't change the fact that Sony originally opted for it to be optional, just the publishers have opted to utilise the paywall & get a little slice of the pie.

Your MMO is actually a good example of the point Ive been trying to make. Theres currently a subscription based MMMO on Ps4 in FFXIV, which has never required PS+ and was in fact opted to be that way by Square Enix themselves as they recognised that there was already a subscription fee. If Sony are having to make a deal with Bethesda to get ESO out of the PS+ paywall, doesn't it kinda prove my point of publishers having the choice with these two examples?
