@armondo36 agreed. although it is a bit late to begin worrying as their fate over the next 5 years has already been sealed. but i would also argue that ratchet and clank became less interesting during the ps3 era and yet they kept cranking those out too (along with resistence). hopefully they will move on from everything and take on some new IP in the ps6 era.
suda51 and gunn were not involved with this remaster and suda in particular seemed to be disgruntled about it. 16 lisensed tracks have been removed. judging by this uneventful and uninspired trailer, it looks like it is going to be a cheap cash grab with the bare minimum amount of work to get it out the door. the original on ps3 was great but a bit rough around the edges — the remaster deserved a lot better (such as a few new areas and expanded maps etc).
@TheArt possibly, but all of us have different tolerance levels. i generally stay in the dark outside of the first gameplay reveal and it has led to more enjoyable experiences for me personally. i have all the confidence in the world that this is going to be a great game coming from the former persona team and don't need to be sold on it any further.
the recent lackluster mgs collection wasn't enough to dissuade people from pre-ordering future "konami" games, huh? been playing mgs series since 1998 but not a chance i give "konami" (in 2024) a dollar until they earn it. to buy a "konami" game on good faith is one of the most foolish things one can do in the current gaming landscape. but i suppose some people have more money than they know what to do with or lack any self control.
@MFTWrecks true. it is a miracle they haven't completely folded at this point. take a look at their stock price. they were at 102EUR per share in 2018. they are currently sitting at 22EUR per share — an 80% dip in just 6 years. i think it is a matter of time before they are acquired. they have some potentially valuable IP but need better management structure and to forgoe their rushed development cycles. they would be better off with just one or two creed games per console cycle for example so that they can implement meaningful changes between releases. it's pretty sad that the company is so incompetent that they can't even figure out how to go about the prince of persia remaster/remake. as for beyond good and evil 2, it might take the prize from duke nukem forever as longest development hell cycle in gaming history.
what is sony's goal with its "classics" release schedule? 4 years in and less than 100 titles to show for it across ps1/ps2/psp. i mean, this is beyond a slow trickle. the ps1/ps2/psp had well over 6000 NTSC releases but currently we are sitting at just 1% of the library on ps4/ps5. ps3 had about 300 ps1 classics alone (not including ps2 and psp games). at this point in time, a conservative number would be 500 classics minimum. seeing people excited about the bread crumbs we are getting is baffling. i would consider re-purchasing some games if sony cared, but as it stands, the only way around this is via "other methods". i.e. NEVER throw away legacy hardware. emulation has come a long way as well. ps1 games run perfectly fine. ps2 could be better but it is getting there.
agreed. they are overdoing it and turning the marketing into information overload. who do they think they are? s-e? (the lead-up to final fantasy xv was mind numbing).
@MFTWrecks what bangers are you referring to? they have been releasing games from the same old, stale franchises for the past 10 years. creed series, rabbids, far cry, just dance and whatever tom clancy related. rinse and repeat. the only breath of fresh air was rayman origins/legends and a few other ubi art games which feels like eons ago now. most of their new IP failed (such as immortals fenyx rising and starlink) so they had to return to the well. the only time ubi was decent was during the ps2 era with the prince of persia trilogy and the original splinter cell games but that was nearly 20 years ago. once they became complacent due to the early success of assassin's creed series, they stopped making games from passion and adopted the assembly line mentality.
might be a better life is strange game if there are actual narrative driven choices here. hard to say without an ounce of gameplay. annapurna rarely disappoints with its published selections.
enjoyed life is strange 1 and before the storm, but clearly there have been too many sequels at this point and the franchise is getting stale. still, might be interesting to see the rest of max' arc. her upgraded design doesn't quite look right, though
this might be the biggest surprise of the show. i don't think i have ever seen a AAA "jrpg" developed by a western developer before. this has to be a first? impressive reveal. main concerns at this time: unproven developer and it looks like it could be incredibly linear (comes across as a walking simulator with boss battles). concerns aside, hope it turns out good.
this looks like it is going to easily surpass doom (2016) as the best doom game ever made. ID is keeping the FPS torch lit while machine games takes a break from wolfenstein.
an article such as this is only going to push more negativity from the community since it dismisses the years and years of concerns many of us have had with the AAA industry at large. i don't know how many times we will have to make our thoughts known for the publisher(s) to get the point?
and no, it has nothing to do with sony being the publisher, although it makes it even more sad and disappointing that it is. this game could have released from ubisoft, wb, ea, activision etc and the result would be just as negative. these games feel like they grew out of a focus-tested lab and were designed for the perfect speciman of gamer that is somehow going to drop all the other hero shooters that they have already invested hundreds if not thousands of hours into? good luck.
at least if the game "looked" original and not some cheap, watered down guardians of the galaxy clone it might have had a bit more appeal to some people? as we have learned from suicide squad, the initial reveal and perception is critical to the success or failure of the game. suicide squad botched it hard (to be honest there was no way they could have put on a good front due to the the cursed genre that it is) and we all know how that turned out. concord is following in the same footsteps and regardless of the outcome of the finished product, i feel like it is already dead on arrival just by being a hero shooter in an oversaturated genre. i don't think sony would even know how to support it long-term since this is its first foray into the hero shooter genre. well, i hope this pleases the sony shareholders. there goes a $500m investment
glad it got released officially, but $60USD? come on now! this is a 6-year old game. curious if this will get a physical release... hopefully it won't be an ultra limited release on the s-e store but not holding my breath.
hmmm. to play devil's advocate... when sony marketed 8K, i think they meant it in the context that ps5 is compatible with 8K tv's... as in, you can connect a ps5 to the 8K TV and it will work (the TV itself will do the upscaling). sony never promised native 8K resolutions or anything even remotely along those lines. at the time, sony likely anticpated video streaming services would feature 8K content (one day) and that PS5 would again, be compatible with such content. nowhere did sony promise native 8K gaming experiences.
some people have taken this out of context and are getting excited over nothing. was sony's marketing misleading? maybe to some extent, but sony cannot help those who are naiive and ignorant when it comes to gaming tech. i don't think we will ever get to a place where native 8K is a thing as it will just be diminishing returns at that point. it would be absolutely counterproductive and hinder game development even further. i think the AAA gaming industry will tap out at native 4K one day... maybe in 10 years time and from there, consoles/pc's will do 8K upscalaing for those who are on the cutting edge. i don't see myself ever wanting to go beyond 4K, though.
@gollumb82 that works. but what about the people who have already invested thousands of dollars into the ps4/ps5 ecosystem and want to play them on a handheld? this could fit the bill, although the ps5 game compatibility will likely be a curated list of sorts which is not ideal. it might make more sense to wait 3-4 years for the tech to catch up a little (and fall in price) and launch the handheld with FULL ps4/ps5 support instead which would be pretty great in my opinion.
@NEStalgia good points. i suppose sony could keep it on life support just to stay in the race but then they are going to have customers to answer and explain to. it's a tough place to be in. i think nintendo and microsoft dodged a bullet with VR. perhaps it was 10 years premature to get into the arms race. that said, while i am not a believer of VR as a communication and productivity device, some people clearly are so it could carve out a niche as you described. as far as i know, the apple vision pro has been quite the disappointment for them, to the point where they greatly cut back on production. i don't know what they were thinking with the asking price to be honest.
@NEStalgia agreed. which begs the question: why did so many manufacturers get into the VR space without a plan or sense of direction beforehand? in sony's case, did it really think 3rd party development would carry the tech on its own? to me, it feels like sony got into the VR space not because its heart was in it and all the projections pointed to a successful future, but merely to cover its bases in case it somehow took off. it did not want to be left behind. if there is one thing microsoft has done right over the past 10 years, it was to evaluate the potential of VR and take a wait and see approach. the way things are going at fb/meta, i won't be surprised if they throw in the towel at some point as well but remains to be seen.
i think VR has the potential to become a niche yet profitable sector. but they need to go back to the drawing board and figure out a business model first. most importantly, the closed wall garden needs to disappear and all VR software needs to be readily available on every VR platform if it has any hope of growing.
@koffing yup, pretty much. ultimately, if we take away all the problems and just present VR for what it is (in terms of being a new way to play video games), i just don't think there are enough interested people out there who feel the need to complicate their lives for what is essentially a slightly more immersive novelty at this point. i don't think that will ever change. the install base may increase over time, but it will plateau and never become a mainstream way to game due to it fundamentally being a hinderance in so many ways.
@gullygamer it's a classic chicken and egg situation. not a large enough install base for AAA VR software to be profitable, but not enough AAA VR software to entice people and grow the hardware install base. the high cost to entry doesn't help. it is damned from all angles.
@Tecinthebrain yup. to be fair, VR is a mess across the board and on every platform. VR demand just isn't there. i think it needs to go away for awhile (maybe 10-15 years to allow the hardware to mature and establish more specialty VR studios to support it) before they try again. and by "they" i mean the entire VR industry. i anticipated growing pains for VR tech, but this has turned out even worse than i imagined.
"While it's almost certainly not going to be the studio's next release..."
honestly, i would be surprised if it wasn't. makes more sense to finish up the trilogy once and for all (and ride on the coattails of the tv series' popularity over the next few years) and then launch the ps6 with a brand new naughty dog IP, never to return to TLOU again.
still looks great! a multiplatform release was likely always in the cards so no surprise there. i hope this relatively unknown developer was up for the task. that said, this is coming from the same publisher as streets of rage 4 and tmnt shredder's revenge so that gives me hope.
perhaps it was premature to give bluepoint free reign to create a new IP huh? there aren't many developers that can do what bluepoint does at such a high level. with the way things are going, remakes are going to play an important role in the AAA space for many, many years to come. having a studio that is entirely focused on this one task isn't such a bad idea so long as there is interest internally. i just cannot shake the idea that bluepoint is positioned for the best remake of all time if given the opportunity. and that game would be metal gear solid remake.
@nessisonett first thing i thought of at the reveal was guardians of the galaxy, so i would throw james gunn into the list of influences as well. been there, done that. this game is wearing its influences on its sleeve.
concord - the devs sure like guardians of the galaxy don't they? nothing more to say about that one. DOA.
ballad of antara - surprise of the event. shows a lot of potential but the developer is unproven so need to see more. i'm getting a dark souls meets sekiro vibe from it but with a greater emphasis on story and some light fantasy elements for safe measure.
astro bot - predictable but looks very polished. a safe bet.
monster hunter wilds - more monster hunter with a few new gimmicks. hard to get excited for yet another monster hunter game but looks like it will be another solid entry.
silent hill 2 - still looks terrible. that voice acting and new character introduction was just awful. nothing is going to save this game at this point.
dynasty warriors 25 - who cares?
until dawn remake - again, who cares or needed this?
@NEStalgia yea. it remains to be seen just how detrimental their move to pc will be in the future as more players jump ship from ps consoles (and sony loses all associated revenue that they provided to the ecosystem). it appears that sony anticipated the razor thin margins and needed pc sales to subsidize its 1st party output, but was that the right call?
this strategy could possibly be effective if sony teased pc gamers but did not port its sequels to pc...ever. so god of war (2018) on pc but no god of war ragnarok. horizon zero dawn on pc, but no horizon forbidden west etc. unfortunately, sony made the mistake in porting the sequels to pc already so i have no idea what herman is talking about there. i suppose he could prevent god of war (2028) and horizon (3) from ever going to pc??? somehow i don't see that happening due to sony's struggles to remain profitable when its software is exclusive to ps5.
@Jay767 same people who predicted skulls and bones and suicide squad would be DOA. they weren't wrong. sony is trying to chase trends rather than innovate. they will get the results that they deserve. let's not kid ourselves and act like a helldivers 2 comes around very often.
@PuppetMaster yea. one piece's immense popularity likely gave the producers enough confidence to take a chance on it. akira, while legendary in its own right, doesn't have the same mainstream appeal and is perceived as a significantly higher risk project. to be honest, it deserves more than a single movie to adequately adapt it. perhaps two. or better yet, an 8 episode mini series. but even if it never happens, it might be for the best with the track record of hollywood adaptations being what it is.
@PuppetMaster i'd say the odds are slightly higher than the akira live action adpataion which has been in limbo and production hell for well over 30 years at this point.
all good things eventually come to an end. it was time for a change anyways so we'll see what the future brings. dqxi was good closure for the entire franchise in my opinion, so if the new entries become unrecognizable, i'm good.
miller simply said the game wasn't as good as he had hoped. as a developer, if you cannnot handle such a soft critique of your game, you should consider a new career. i don't think miller could have phrased that any more politely than he did. some people reek of insecurity.
that means microsoft has had plans for a ps5 release for some time now... they were never "testing the waters" for future ps5 releases and that was all a lie just as predicted (xbox didn't want to come across as weak or desperate, so they put a PR spin on it of course). at some point, i have to imagine microsoft knew they were going to take this path when they realized games pass wasn't sustainable and their console sales were faltering. perhaps in 2022 they pivoted and we are now seeing the results.
as for the new doom. sounds like doom in the quake universe to me which can only be a good thing (gothic setting).
kind of sad that people are still picking on the order:1886 after all these years. some things never change, huh?
the order:1886 was a great game with loads of potential as a long running franchise has it been given a chance. let's not confuse the "value" of the game with the "game" itself. true, the game wasn't worth the full asking price, but very few games are. at $20-30, the order:1886 is absolutely worth the unique experience it offers.
so what are we arguing about really? sounds like we are debating the "value" of the game, not the game itself in many cases. the scathing hellblade reviews are repeating the same nonsense because people cannot accept that some games are designed to be shorter experiences.
the price is ridiculous at launch, but it might be worth picking up for $20-30 in the future if you are into narrative driven games. it is of very high quality for its genre. don't like the genre? that's fine, but to call it garbage is just immature and self entitled behaviour. let's just leave it at that.
it would be far more interesting to discuss the tiers of pricing in the gaming industry and how off base it is. that would actually be productive rather than bashing a game due to it being a short experience.
thankfully, over the next 4 years when playstation is in the red due to the mess jim ryan left behind (and after multiple GaaS cancellations and/or failures), the first thing to go will be the mobile division. nobody will care that it is gone and it will free up resources in the future for sony's core games. stick to your strengths and other publishers will stick to theirs. sony was not destined to be in the mobile space. they got into gaming in a very different era and clearly do not have the foresight nor the resources or curated talent to break through. at best, they could invest in some korean or chinese mobile studios perhaps. that would make a hell of a lot more sense than sony attempting and failing to develop mobile content on its own.

still looks great! a multiplatform release was likely always in the cards so no surprise there. i hope this relatively unknown developer was up for the task. that said, this is coming from the same publisher as streets of rage 4 and tmnt shredder's revenge so that gives me hope.
Re: Don't Worry, Sony's Most Recognisable Studios Are Still Focused on Single Player PS5 Games
perhaps it was premature to give bluepoint free reign to create a new IP huh? there aren't many developers that can do what bluepoint does at such a high level. with the way things are going, remakes are going to play an important role in the AAA space for many, many years to come. having a studio that is entirely focused on this one task isn't such a bad idea so long as there is interest internally. i just cannot shake the idea that bluepoint is positioned for the best remake of all time if given the opportunity. and that game would be metal gear solid remake.
Re: Big New PS5, PC Shooter Concord Has an Uphill Battle Ahead of It
@wiiware agreed.the guardians influence cannot be ignored with this one
Re: Big New PS5, PC Shooter Concord Has an Uphill Battle Ahead of It
@nessisonett first thing i thought of at the reveal was guardians of the galaxy, so i would throw james gunn into the list of influences as well. been there, done that. this game is wearing its influences on its sleeve.
Re: Poll: Are You Happy with Your PS Plus Essential Games for June 2024?
@KillerIsD34D it is, but everyone who cared about it played it many moons ago at this point.
Re: Round Up: What Was Announced During Sony's State of Play Livestream for May 2024?
fairly lackluster stream with a few exceptions.
concord - the devs sure like guardians of the galaxy don't they? nothing more to say about that one. DOA.
ballad of antara - surprise of the event. shows a lot of potential but the developer is unproven so need to see more. i'm getting a dark souls meets sekiro vibe from it but with a greater emphasis on story and some light fantasy elements for safe measure.
astro bot - predictable but looks very polished. a safe bet.
monster hunter wilds - more monster hunter with a few new gimmicks. hard to get excited for yet another monster hunter game but looks like it will be another solid entry.
silent hill 2 - still looks terrible. that voice acting and new character introduction was just awful. nothing is going to save this game at this point.
dynasty warriors 25 - who cares?
until dawn remake - again, who cares or needed this?
Re: Sony Plans to Convert PC Gamers Through the Power of PlayStation
@NEStalgia yea. it remains to be seen just how detrimental their move to pc will be in the future as more players jump ship from ps consoles (and sony loses all associated revenue that they provided to the ecosystem). it appears that sony anticipated the razor thin margins and needed pc sales to subsidize its 1st party output, but was that the right call?
Re: Sony Plans to Convert PC Gamers Through the Power of PlayStation
this strategy could possibly be effective if sony teased pc gamers but did not port its sequels to pc...ever. so god of war (2018) on pc but no god of war ragnarok. horizon zero dawn on pc, but no horizon forbidden west etc. unfortunately, sony made the mistake in porting the sequels to pc already so i have no idea what herman is talking about there. i suppose he could prevent god of war (2028) and horizon (3) from ever going to pc??? somehow i don't see that happening due to sony's struggles to remain profitable when its software is exclusive to ps5.
Re: Sly Cooper, Tomb Raider, Star Wars Revealed as Surprise PS2 Games on PS Plus Premium
those who actually care about retro gaming already know what to do.
Re: Heist Shooter Fairgame$ on Track to Deliver AAA Multiplayer Experience for PS5, PC
@Jay767 same people who predicted skulls and bones and suicide squad would be DOA. they weren't wrong. sony is trying to chase trends rather than innovate. they will get the results that they deserve. let's not kid ourselves and act like a helldivers 2 comes around very often.
Re: Random: Hideo Kojima Finds His Ideal Live-Action Solid Snake
@PuppetMaster yea. one piece's immense popularity likely gave the producers enough confidence to take a chance on it. akira, while legendary in its own right, doesn't have the same mainstream appeal and is perceived as a significantly higher risk project. to be honest, it deserves more than a single movie to adequately adapt it. perhaps two. or better yet, an 8 episode mini series. but even if it never happens, it might be for the best with the track record of hollywood adaptations being what it is.
Re: Random: Hideo Kojima Finds His Ideal Live-Action Solid Snake
@PuppetMaster i'd say the odds are slightly higher than the akira live action adpataion which has been in limbo and production hell for well over 30 years at this point.
Re: Three Years Later, Dragon Quest 12 Is Still Nowhere to Be Seen on Dragon Quest Day
all good things eventually come to an end. it was time for a change anyways so we'll see what the future brings. dqxi was good closure for the entire franchise in my opinion, so if the new entries become unrecognizable, i'm good.
Re: Mad Max Dev Fires Back Following Furioso Director George Miller's Kojima Comments
miller simply said the game wasn't as good as he had hoped. as a developer, if you cannnot handle such a soft critique of your game, you should consider a new career. i don't think miller could have phrased that any more politely than he did. some people reek of insecurity.
Re: Rumour: New DOOM Game Reveal at Xbox Showcase, Coming to PS5
that means microsoft has had plans for a ps5 release for some time now... they were never "testing the waters" for future ps5 releases and that was all a lie just as predicted (xbox didn't want to come across as weak or desperate, so they put a PR spin on it of course). at some point, i have to imagine microsoft knew they were going to take this path when they realized games pass wasn't sustainable and their console sales were faltering. perhaps in 2022 they pivoted and we are now seeing the results.
as for the new doom. sounds like doom in the quake universe to me which can only be a good thing (gothic setting).
Re: Soapbox: Once a PS4 Console Exclusive, PS5 Players Are Missing a Visual Stunner in Hellblade 2
kind of sad that people are still picking on the order:1886 after all these years. some things never change, huh?
the order:1886 was a great game with loads of potential as a long running franchise has it been given a chance. let's not confuse the "value" of the game with the "game" itself. true, the game wasn't worth the full asking price, but very few games are. at $20-30, the order:1886 is absolutely worth the unique experience it offers.
so what are we arguing about really? sounds like we are debating the "value" of the game, not the game itself in many cases. the scathing hellblade reviews are repeating the same nonsense because people cannot accept that some games are designed to be shorter experiences.
the price is ridiculous at launch, but it might be worth picking up for $20-30 in the future if you are into narrative driven games. it is of very high quality for its genre. don't like the genre? that's fine, but to call it garbage is just immature and self entitled behaviour. let's just leave it at that.
it would be far more interesting to discuss the tiers of pricing in the gaming industry and how off base it is. that would actually be productive rather than bashing a game due to it being a short experience.
Re: PlayStation Mobile Job Listing Reveals New Insight into Sony's Smartphone Strategy
thankfully, over the next 4 years when playstation is in the red due to the mess jim ryan left behind (and after multiple GaaS cancellations and/or failures), the first thing to go will be the mobile division. nobody will care that it is gone and it will free up resources in the future for sony's core games. stick to your strengths and other publishers will stick to theirs. sony was not destined to be in the mobile space. they got into gaming in a very different era and clearly do not have the foresight nor the resources or curated talent to break through. at best, they could invest in some korean or chinese mobile studios perhaps. that would make a hell of a lot more sense than sony attempting and failing to develop mobile content on its own.
