Re: Sony Reveals Vision for the Metaverse

ThomasHL

The dotcom bubble was full of companies who imagined people would like to go to a 3D virtual shop to buy something. They all went bust, because that's so much less convenient than a list of items on a website.

We don't need a 3D world for virtual conferencing. That's more awkward than teams. Online concerts potentially have some appeal (I've heard Fortnites are fun) but you don't need to go to a virtual space before the concert starts, and it's will never be similar to the experience of an actual concert.

The 'metaverse' is better done by a bunch of separate things which already exist.

Re: PS Store Weekend Offer Cuts More PS5, PS4 Prices

ThomasHL

@mucc I believe Sony does control the discount price of third party games. To get a game on a sale on the PS store, a developer has to wait for Sony to invite them to take part in a sale, and then Sony offers them a maximum discount percentage and the developer can choose particular discount levels up to that maximum.

Re: PS Plus Premium Demo Requirement Puzzling Publishers, Devs

ThomasHL

@thefourfoldroot That would be true if demos are a good indicator of the quality of the game, but that's often not true.

I've played plenty of demos where the game seemed rubbish, only for it to turn out to be good at release. It can be hard to fit big complex games into a short demo. Either you make the demo a tutorial (which is boring) or you throw a pile of mechanics at the player which haven't been introduced.

This is especially true if it's just the first 2 hours! Imagine if you played the first two hours of Persona 5. You wouldn't even have reached a proper combat section!

Re: Sony's Cloud Streamed PS3 Games Are Causing a Storm on Social Media

ThomasHL

@DETfaninATL it's not currently possible to run PS3 games on a PS5. What the cloud streaming they're offering here does is run PS3 games on different hardware and then send you the image of the game.

The reason why Sony won't let you do that for PS3 games you own is it costs money to stream and they don't want to sign up to giving away money so people can play their own games.

The discussion is whether Sony could make it possible to play your PS3 games on PS hardware, but even if it is possible, it would take a lot of time before we could do that because the PS3 hardware was very weird. Xbox hardware has always been more standard which makes it easier for Microsoft.

From the PS4 onwards Sony has been more normal on it's hardware design, so I hope backwards compatibility won't be an issue in the future.

Re: PS Store Mega March Sale Cuts Prices of Many PS5, PS4 Games

ThomasHL

@God_of_War_ The PS store (and probably a lot of others) don't really do 'sales' anymore. They're just games where the price has fallen because it's old, but they pretend it's still worth full price for half the year.

If you look at sites like psprices, most major games receive a 'sale' every other month, normally for the same price each 'sale'.

The good news is it means you're safe to wait. You don't have to worry about missing this particular sale

Re: Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Takes the Most Trophies at DICE Awards 2022

ThomasHL

It Takes Two winning is a sign of what a weak year 2021 was. The gameplay, whilst hit and miss, is fantastic but the story is so bad the cutscenes continually drain all the fun from the game. I've been playing with a friend and we're pushing ourselves to the end just for the sake of it.

It's only February and there have already been at least 3 releases in 2022 that would blow any 2021 game out of the water.

Re: My Hero Academia Is a Free-to-Play PS4 Battle Royale Now

ThomasHL

@TowaHerschel7 the visuals don't need to be passed through the internet. The servers track position and action data for every character and that is what gets sent over the internet, the actual graphics are all processed on your console from the data stored on the console.

Re: Talking Point: What Do You Realistically Expect from PS5, PS4's Game Pass Inspired PS Plus Reboot?

ThomasHL

Microsoft isn't close to breaking even on Gamepass, and I personally doubt the business model works. Netflix are raising their prices again, and they still haven't reached the point where they make a profit.

Games are harder because they'll always be more niche, production costs are high, and losing a £60 purchase stings more than losing a £10 cinema ticket. And films still make the bulk of the revenue in cinemas before going to streaming.

Microsoft are hoping they can drive their competition out of business, and then jack their prices up and cut their content down.

Re: New Wonder Woman Game Will Use the Nemesis System

ThomasHL

I don't feel like the Mordor games ever put all the pieces together. The tone felt wrong for Tolkien, the gameplay was too repetitive, and the world felt like a gameplay level stuffed with enemies standing in groups rather than a real place. I'm excited to see if they can improve on it
