By now, it is clear that Sony has been decently incentivized to prioritize PC at our expense. So yes, @Col_McCafferty, keep expecting all the luscious enhancements of Sony’s games to be PC-exclusive while PS gets left behind. Not that PlayStation was ever going to end up with the best versions anyway once they started down this road.
It will become apparent soon enough. When we have to start waiting longer for Sony’s first party games because they’re devoting some of their manpower to PC ports, that’s the biggest way we’ll know. Maybe we could have been playing Horizon Forbidden West by now. Who’s to say that the two months Guerrilla missed 2021 by wasn’t the result of their spending several months fixing the PC version?
Sony cannot court other markets and still act like their commitment to PlayStation is the same as it ever was. I just don’t see how that’s possible.
I wonder which of Sony’s first-party devs will be roped into making mobile games. Because naturally, everything Sony is doing in their bid to chase after other markets is coming at the direct expense of the PS community. More resources that go into PC/mobile, the less resources that go into PlayStation.
Damn, why does it seem like Japanese companies in particular are jumping all over NFTs at the moment? Square Enix, Konami, now Sega. I swear, next is gonna be Nintendo.
Of course it will. Sony is going the way of Microsoft (except for giving us some benefit out of the deal), and every single exclusive they port over takes us that much closer to day-and-date releases. Every incentive they receive to do something against the interest of the PS community will only continue to result in Sony treating us like second class citizens while they chase after PC and mobile at our expense.
I’m fully expecting that the PS5 won’t have a single exclusive to speak of when all is said and done. The PS4 will at least keep the crappier ones or the ones Sony just don’t give a damn about (Knack 1 & 2, The Order: 1886, etc.)
For crying out loud, this is as dumb as Sony not allowing you to use PS4 controllers on the PS5 for PS5 games. It’s almost as if they want their hardware to be as inconvenient and excluding as possible. Sure would be nice to just be able to upgrade your VR headset and continue to have access to all your existing games. But nope!
How is this energy-efficient, exactly? Are they expecting us to just take their word for it? I mean, when has a massive multi-billion dollar corporation ever been dishonest, am I right?!
Seriously, good on Sony for terminating this guy immediately instead of making excuses for him. If he’s a VP, then I’m sure it means he’s been with the company for quite some time, and had quite a few friends among top PS executives. Letting him go was the right thing to do, even if it wasn’t the easiest for them.
Frankly, I’m not going to chastise Sony for not being unable to offer as good a deal as Gamepass. It’s a service only a company with endlessly deep pockets can provide, and that’s not Sony. But yeah, they need something better than what they’ve currently got going. Much better.
Not surprised, but Cogen: Sword of Rewind is not listed for January 2022, which is by far my most anticipated game right now. Despite the fact that it has a playable demo out right now and looks to be a very good game, literally no one is talking about it right now. And I just can’t understand it.
@Rob_230 Oh, I'm fully expecting that they are. Insomniac was hiring for one as well. Naughty Dog's been working on theirs for quite some time now, and who knows when we'll see anything else from them. In any case, turning away from the single-player experiences that have defined PlayStation for generations to chase after the failing and inconsistent GaaS model is ABSOLUTELY something I would expect from Jim Ryan in his ongoing quest to run PlayStation into the ground.
"we are certain that the GaaS approach will grow in importance as gaming becomes more service oriented."
Wow. This is the absolute opposite lesson you should have taken away from this. If anything, it shows that the GaaS approach is extremely difficult to sustain when it goes wrong, such as when your roadmap plans fall through and you're left trying to keep your playerbase enthusiastic about it. Also, the most successful GaaS games are free-to-play, so maybe that's a hint you ought to take as well?
Bottom line, Avengers should have been a damn single-player game like Guardians of the Galaxy. That was what Crystal Dynamics clearly had the formula for before the game was twisted sideways to fill the mold of a GaaS to its own detriment.
Well, it was far and away the best boss fight in the game just as it was, so that was definitely an excellent decision.
Frankly, it’s insane to me how Insomniac can avoid crunch and still manage to be the most productive of Sony’s first-party studios. Naughty Dog especially could learn from them, since their crunch culture is reportedly the worst.
@truerbluer You know, speaking of Jim Ryan’s lies, does anyone else remember the reason given behind why PS4 controllers cannot be used on the PS5 for PS5 games? Because the DualSense is just oh-so-innovative and because of that, they could not bear to afford us the convenience of using our old controllers with our new console?
Well, when those PS5 exclusives started making their way to PC, which is clearly going to happen as early as next year, why do I get the feeling that having a DualSense is suddenly not going to be a requirement to experience them as it is for us? Surely, if it was so important for us, it ought to be equally important for Sony’s other customers, right?! No..?
Just a little reminder of how Jim Ryan view the PS community in relation to the market that they want to chase after now.
Yet more evidence to show that the people who think "It's only a few exclusives, 2-3 years down the line" are being utterly delusional. Hell, GT7 and Horizon Forbidden West haven't even come out yet and were on the GeForce list, showing that they're already being primed for PC. Are we seriously still under the impression that Sony's not going to hit day-and-date at some point very soon?
Also, the frequency of these PC port announcements and rumors is truly getting remarkable at this point. In the span of a month we've had Uncharted 4 and God of War, now this, not to mention the GeForce leak. But what else should we expect now that PlayStation is no longer the apple of Jim Ryan's eye? He's after that PC and mobile money, and we the PS community just the inane sheep for him to charge out the ass.
Suppose I should be relieved to know that Santa Monica isn't being forced to devote manpower to this, thus potentially causing us to wait even longer for Ragnarok.
But honestly, this is what Sony bought Nixxes for, right? Or are their hands a little too full with porting GT7 to PC in less than a year?
As a massive defender of the first Assassin's Creed, I've long since accepted that I'm in the minority and people aren't usually going to rank it highly.
But for crying out loud, can people stop ranking it beneath Revelations already?! Revelations is hot garbage that I think only gets a pass for being part of the Ezio trilogy...the worst part by far, of course.
Are people really still under the delusion that this will only ever be older games? Have we all not seen the Nvidia leak which showed that even games that haven't come out on PS5 yet (GT7) are ALREADY being primed for a PC port?
The window of exclusivity will inevitably shrink. Sony's going the way of MS, just a matter of when.
Wow, Sony giving up the PS4’s literal highest-rated exclusive already. Well, just like with HFW, I have to wonder by how much Ragnarok was pushed back so that Santa Monica’s devs could work on this. It’s not like Nixxes is doing these port jobs all on their own.
But that’s okay, because we’re all perfectly fine with having to wait that much longer Sony’s first-party games because they want to chase after the PC market, aren’t we? I mean hell, at this point, I think Jim Ryan is just actively looking for ways not to benefit us PlayStation owners. ‘Cause it’s clear as day we aren’t the apple of Sony’s eye anymore. Nope. PC and soon mobile are, and we PS owners are just the chumps that Sony wants to mislead and charge out the ass.
In any case, give us day-and-date releases already and be done with it, Sony. We know now that we’re full steam ahead towards a future where PlayStation has no exclusives anymore, and we would appreciate you no longer letting us believe otherwise.
Should Mass Effect really be in the running for GOTY since it's still just a remaster? It definitely seems like Tales of Arise got shafted in favor of that.
So in other words, should Sony continue to allow Jim Ryan to run PlayStation into the ground, we can expect that Sony will move out of hardware and into a streaming exclusive future, with a possible PC launcher for good measure. And that's all that will be left of the brand as we know it.
How many times? How many times do you have to see what an utter disaster this man is for PlayStation before you become convinced? #FireJimRyan.
@Sebatrox It's a reference to The Lion King, The Jungle Book and the Genesis version of Aladdin being developed by Virgin Games. The SNES version of Aladdin was made by Capcom.
@Shepherd_Tallon Not sure how you have so much optimism, since it's become pretty damn clear that Ryan/Hulst do not have PlayStation's best interests at heart. It seems that as far as their existing userbase goes, all they want to do is pinch every last penny out of us, completely content to ignore the incredible value that Microsoft is offering to their own users on the Xbox side. That's why they actually had the gall to charge us $80 to upgrade the PS4 version of HFW. Oh, but they backtracked, though! Just like earlier this year when they backtracked on closing down the PS3/Vita's storefronts because they are two completely out-of-touch idiots who don't understand that games deserve preservation. I mean, I can only imagine how indistinguishable from EA/Activision they'll become once they start their shift towards live service games, which we know is right around the corner.
Meanwhile, they want to court not only the PC market, but the mobile one as well. So PlayStation is clearly not their only focus anymore, and that is happening only to our detriment. But of course, they don't want to court the PC folks so much that they leave us PS owners under the belief that the PS5 will no longer have exclusives. So what do they do? They mislead us. Because as Sony's existing and mostly loyal fanbase, they know their dishonesty won't be punished. This is what they're doing to us at the same time they're giving PC users the best versions of PlayStation games available.
If this is true, there's pretty much no reason to expect that the PS5 will have ANY exclusives whatsoever when all is said and done. I at least expect the PS4 to hold on to a few, namely the crappy ones that Sony wants to forget about like the Knack games. But if Sony is already planning to port PS5 exclusives not even a year into its lifespan.... then *****, that certainly seems to suggest that not only will they port over every first-party game, but the windows of time between PS5 and PC will only continue to shrink.
Also, Demon's Souls being listed once again reminds me of Sony pulling that trailer which said it was coming to PC. Seems like it was indeed a case of Sony being honest with us earlier than they intended. Because while they want to go the way of Microsoft and put everything on PC day and date, they also want to sell the PS5 on the notion that it will have exclusive games.
And of course, we the loyal PS owners will continue to get f*** all out of the deal. No benefit, only detriment. Horizon Forbidden West just missed a 2021 release by apparently two months, and yet there was a story from back in January that some of Guerilla's developers were still working on fixing the PC port of HZD, so they didn't have all of their manpower working on the game until just this year. Hmmm....
They should have left PS4 behind for HFW, GT7, and GoW:R. Sure, PS4 owners would miss out on them, but they also wouldn't have been held back by weaker hardware.
Not counting on it, just like there wasn't an upgrade path for Spider-Man Remastered. Sony evidently wants to make this its third generation of re-selling you games that you already bought.
inb4 a whole bunch a people piss and moan about Push Square crapping on Sony again, but honestly, it does indeed feel like the PS5 is losing steam. Really starting to wonder when we'll get some more new IPs.
Honestly, it's looking to me like the PS5 is losing steam. I was definitely expecting much more in the way of new IP or even just PS5 exclusives and I really don't think they delivered. There still not giving us any urgency to buy a PS5, imo. And hell, given how long they're apparently going to be supply-strained for, that might just be a good thing.
One thing is for sure, first-party wise, Insomniac is damn near carrying the PS5 on its own. I am utterly stunned that they just announced two more PS5 games after already releasing two in just the last year.
That said, I to roll my eyes at the Uncharted remaster. I figured Spider-Man wasn't going to be a one-off, so of course Sony isn't done selling us their old games again instead of providing free upgrades for them, but come the hell on. It just seems downright ridiculous at this point that they're going in on remasters once again, for pretty much the third generation in a row. Oh, and naturally they announced a PC version at an event for PlayStation...because OF COURSE they friggin did. Because Sony chasing after the PC market is evidently just as important to them as chasing after would-be PlayStation owners!
Insomniac, bruh, take a friggin' breath! You've already carried the PS5 pretty far on your own up to this point, and you're just making everyone else look bad now!
Gonna have to agree, Sony needs to kill it here. They need new announcements, too. If they just wanted to show off more Horizon Forbidden West, Kena, or Deathloop gameplay, they could have just done so with a State of Play.
And frankly, after the awful year they've had, Sony needs to give me a reason to be excited about being a PlayStation fan again.
Honestly, this is clearly an issue that will cease to exist once cross-gen stops being a thing. And I really hope it happens sooner rather than later. We need to stop getting games that are held back by the weaker hardware.
Well, that's that, I guess. Gee, sure wish Ryan would take a damn hint and stop pissing everyone off the first time, but...
In any case, I'd like to take this moment to thank all the defenders and Sony shills for telling us to shut up and get over it. Thank you for not being loud and influential enough that this backtrack might never have happened.
I think what I find so galling about this is that it ultimately just feels like a straight up punishment for those of us who want to play the game, but still don't own a PS5. Sony was the one who decided not to make HFW a PS5 exclusive in the first place so that PS4 owners wouldn't have to miss out on it, but that altruism has been completely undone by the fact that they're essentially forcing us to buy the game twice when the time eventually comes that we do get a PS5. And they undoubtedly know that people are going to pay the piper, because obviously, most PS4 owners will transition to the PS5 eventually and they don't want to be stuck with the lesser version forever.
I'm a longtime PlayStation fan of over twenty years, and the moves Sony has been making lately has caused me to lose so much faith in the brand in just 2021 alone. I swear, at the end of the year, there absolutely needs to be a review of how terrible the optics have been in 2021 for PlayStation under Jim Ryan's leadership. From the shuttering of Japan Studio and subsequent bleeding of Japanese talent, to the abrupt closure announcement of the PS3/PSP/Vita storefronts that pissed everyone off enough that they were forced to backtrack, to forcing PS owners to pay full price for MLB: The Show while Xbox owners got it on Gamepass day one....yeah, I've definitely been keeping the receipts.
I'm glad Layden is happy now, but his comment still reads like he's deliberately avoiding the nasty parts behind why he left.
Meanwhile, Jim Ryan is probably the worst head of PlayStation ever, and he is clearly not leading the brand down a positive path. Not to mention he's revealing himself as a bulls***er that we cannot trust in any way. He tells us he believes in generations, then lies to us about games having PS4 versions. He tells is that the Horizon Forbidden West upgrade will be free, then charges us for it.
I swear, Sony just absolutely does not care about how greedy and anti-consumer they're coming across in comparison to Microsoft this gen. I can understand not being able to compete with the insane value of Gamepass, but they're just going above and freaking beyond to show how much less value they're offering to their customers in comparison. They absolutely should not be charging for upgrades to their own first-party games.
This is why I still genuinely feel that MS deserved to kick their asses this gen. It is a damn shame that it's not happening, because Lord knows MS deserves to be rewarded for their pro-consumer moves, and Sony deserves another slice of humble pie of the sort they received during the PS3 era.
Ah, yes, the routine "Japan is still important to us" shtick from Sony that continues to mean virtually nothing. It's the same thing they were saying even before they shut down Japan Studio, which basically proved their words meaningless.

They should have left PS4 behind for HFW, GT7, and GoW:R. Sure, PS4 owners would miss out on them, but they also wouldn't have been held back by weaker hardware.
Re: Fans Ponder Whether There's an Upgrade Path for Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection on PS5
Not counting on it, just like there wasn't an upgrade path for Spider-Man Remastered. Sony evidently wants to make this its third generation of re-selling you games that you already bought.
Re: Reaction: PlayStation Showcase 2021 Was Good, But Not Good Enough
inb4 a whole bunch a people piss and moan about Push Square crapping on Sony again, but honestly, it does indeed feel like the PS5 is losing steam. Really starting to wonder when we'll get some more new IPs.
Re: Talking Point: Did PlayStation Showcase 2021 Deliver on the Hype?
Re: Spider-Man Dev Insomniac Is Making a Wolverine Game for PS5
Insomniac, bruh, take a friggin' breath! You've already carried the PS5 pretty far on your own up to this point, and you're just making everyone else look bad now!
Re: Soapbox: After a Year of Silence, Today's PlayStation Showcase Can't Afford Dead Air
Re: My Friend Peppa Pig Has a Gameplay Trailer to Share
Incredible graphics! You know we've come a long way in gaming technology when you can't tell a game from the show it's based on!
Re: There's a Dicey inFAMOUS PS5 Rumour Doing the Rounds
Eh, I'd much rather Sucker Punch return to Sly Cooper than Infamous.
Re: Soapbox: I Don't Know How to Feel About This PS4-to-PS5 Upgrade Uproar
Honestly, this is clearly an issue that will cease to exist once cross-gen stops being a thing. And I really hope it happens sooner rather than later. We need to stop getting games that are held back by the weaker hardware.
Re: Horizon Forbidden West Will Now Offer Free PS4 to PS5 Upgrade, Sony Confirms
Re: Fans Want Sony to Reconsider Horizon Forbidden West's PS4 to PS5 Upgrade
Re: Shawn Layden Reveals Why He Left Sony PlayStation
I'm glad Layden is happy now, but his comment still reads like he's deliberately avoiding the nasty parts behind why he left.
Meanwhile, Jim Ryan is probably the worst head of PlayStation ever, and he is clearly not leading the brand down a positive path. Not to mention he's revealing himself as a bulls***er that we cannot trust in any way. He tells us he believes in generations, then lies to us about games having PS4 versions. He tells is that the Horizon Forbidden West upgrade will be free, then charges us for it.
Re: Sony Will Make You Pay Extra to Upgrade Horizon Forbidden West from PS4 to PS5
Re: Don't Worry, Naughty Dog Will Continue Making Single Player, Story-Focused Games
Really hope they're doing a new IP. I have close to zero interest in another Last of Us sequel or remake.
Re: Horizon Forbidden West Release Date Set for February 2022 on PS5, PS4
Oh, how nice of Sony to wait for Gamescom to tell us something they could have commented on weeks ago, back when it was first rumored.
And here we thought they had nothing in the pipeline for us to look forward to!
Re: Sony Investing in External Japanese Development Group
Ah, yes, the routine "Japan is still important to us" shtick from Sony that continues to mean virtually nothing. It's the same thing they were saying even before they shut down Japan Studio, which basically proved their words meaningless.
