Re: PlayStation Showcase Finally Announced for 24th May

eshy76

@Green-Bandit That's great, but I am only interested in the high-end console platform that is more likely to consistently deliver great games, which Phil Spencer made clear is going to be PlayStation and not Xbox. For those of you who prefer or like games subscriptions over great games and value active users more, Xbox is a great platform, but not my thing alas.

Moreover, as you know, whatever the EU has decided, if the CMA decision is not overturned, the Activision deal will still be off, so I wouldn't count those chickens just yet.

I too hope both showcases are great!

Re: PlayStation Showcase Finally Announced for 24th May

eshy76

@cburg Hey there - that's a fair point. I would say even though I game mainly on PS, I don't want a knockout blow, but more that I feel like it could be, if that makes sense.

Agreed on all your comments about competition, but there was something in the way Phil Spencer was talking in his Redfall mea culpa that was unusually downbeat for him...a big blow from Sony in this showcase...who knows what can happen?

In an ideal world, Sony crushes it and MS replies in kind with their own showcase.

Re: PlayStation Showcase Finally Announced for 24th May

eshy76

After Redfall, the CMA and Phil Spencer's unfortunate comments, the competition is swaying like a defeated player at the end of a Mortal Kombat bout.

"FINISH HIM"

With PS5 selling like hotcakes, a good show could be a knockout blow, or at least will pile the pressure onto Xbox.

I hope to see a good set of PSVR2 titles, some more Spider-Man 2 and Naughty Dog's latest work...let's go!

Re: Poll: How Would You Rate The Last of Us Season One Finale?

eshy76

Brilliant brilliant brilliant. My memory of the game is a little fuzzy after some time, so I'm not sure what they took out of the episode, but for me I got all that back and more from the first scene...talk about expanding the lore!

They hit all the high points, but everything hinged on the very last scene...and Bella utterly nailed it. Chef's kiss, bravo!

Re: NieR: Automata's Producer Threatened to Leave Square Enix in Order to Get the Game Made

eshy76

I'm playing through Replicant, but Automata was such a treat after it clicked for me. One of those games that stay with you, even if you've only played it once. Great characters, memorable setting, mournful soundtrack, varied and surprising gameplay. The underlying story was bobbins though (IMO), but that was a small quibble when what I ended up caring about was the bond between 2B and 9S.

Re: PS5 Price Increase Confirmed for UK, Europe, Japan, Canada, and More

eshy76

@Widey85 I'm not sure we're in total agreement, but I would say I hope this is as far the price increases go. And let's not pretend Xbox are saints...didn't they try to increase the price of Gamepass last year and had to hastily backtrack? And online gaming on console used to be free until Xbox charged for LIVE...we need competition to be strong on all sides.

Re: PS5 Price Increase Confirmed for UK, Europe, Japan, Canada, and More

eshy76

@Widey85 Well no - this is how pricing works in a free market, competitive environment. Companies would always like to raise prices, but are constrained by competition. Sometimes they have to increase prices due to rising costs, but have to balance this against the impact on their competitive position.

In this case, yes, Sony is raising prices by more in markets where it has a stronger competitive position and by less where Xbox is more competitive (the UK and US). And especially the US.

But I think you would have more of a point about fleecing if Sony raised prices by, say, 20% when inflation is expected to be 10-15%, but the announced price increases are in-line with or below current and projected inflation rates in the coming 12 months.

Re: PS5 Price Increase Confirmed for UK, Europe, Japan, Canada, and More

eshy76

@Widey85 Why put up the cost of entry? The console costs money to make...their input costs have clearly gone up...on top of that, currencies have depreciated vs. the US dollar, so revenues from outside the US have fallen in dollar terms.

This is why the prices of everything are going up - input costs are increasing across the board and these are, unfortunately, being passed onto the end consumer via price inflation.

Don't get me wrong, any price increase is bad for the consumer - I wish they didn't do this. But putting my business hat on, I can see why they have - the losses they were probably already making on each PS5 console have been increasing, and they can't afford to take mounting losses on the chin. Sony does not have the cash machines that Microsoft has in terms of the Windows/Office ecosystem, or indeed their cash reserves.

Re: PS5 Price Increase Confirmed for UK, Europe, Japan, Canada, and More

eshy76

Horrible but understandable. For those who are angry at Sony, don't you think it would be odd if rising inflation didn't impact these companies? Especially as the components they need have been hit by shortages for some time. This won't help them sell more consoles for sure, but we live in difficult times.

Re: Gran Turismo 7 Update Adds Three Cars to PS5, PS4 Sim Next Week

eshy76

I'm still playing GT7 and am now 129 hours in. After initially getting gold medals for all the cafe events, I moved on to the other races, missions, circuit experiences and so on and I've completed most of that now. I'm loving my time with the game.

On track, in particular, the game has kept me coming back even when I'd thought I'd moved on to something else. I shied away from the longer races for a long time, but have now done all of that, with the dynamic weather and pit stops adding a layer of strategy to the action. Also, 129 hours in and not 1 penny paid on MTX.

I'm looking forward to the new content, hopefully some new events will be there too!

Re: Gran Turismo 7 (PS5) - The Real Driving Simulator Makes Its Grand Return

eshy76

I played this at 12.30am last night and had to rip myself away from it at 2.33am to be able to wake up for work! Gloriously polished and the driving is on point...definitely can feel the GT Sport underpinnings to the gameplay, but that is no bad thing in my books.

It is clearly huge and fully featured...I started getting into the GT Cafe-challenge game loop and it is properly compulsive. Got my first license also. It looks stunning in my eyes and is silky smooth with no loading times, which makes a huge difference.

Polyphony have also gone out of their way to make the driving accessible with all sorts of assists (I tried some and then turned most of them off).

Heck, I even enjoyed the Music Rally mode with the "Hooked by Classics" soundtrack...toe-tapping and all...more confirmation of my old age probably.

This has the old school GT feel (in a good way) - the swagger is back in a way I have not felt from this series since GT3 A-Spec. I can similarly see myself losing months to this, after I complete the sublime HFW.

Re: First Impressions: Gran Turismo 7 on PS5, PS4 Looks Like the Biggest and Best Yet

eshy76

Wow that just looked amazing. Yamauchi-san has clearly poured himself into this game. It's like he wants this to be the last word on racing games. It's a racing game, RPG, motoring encyclopedia, meteorological and photography simulator all rolled into one!

I'm also an amateur stargazer/astrophotographer so I'm completely made up by the accuracy of the night skies in the game...I'm totally going to be pausing and checking them out...a lot!

Re: Poll: What Is Your PS5, PS4 Game of the Year 2021?

eshy76

I "played" 5 of those, but only 4 to any great degree.

For me number 1 is very close between Ratchet and Clank and GOTG...maybe Ratchet just shades it.

3. Returnal
4. FFVII Remake Intergrade
5. Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut (hardly played this, will do soon!)

Two from last year I played through and enjoyed a lot this year are A Plague Tale: Innocence and Immortals: Fenyx Rising

Re: Video: Was 2011 the Best Year Ever for PlayStation?

eshy76

And let's not forget 2001 on the PS2...was quite a good year too...

Gran Theft Auto 3
Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Devil May Cry
SSX Tricky
Final Fantasy X
Klonoa 2
Twisted Metal: Black
ICO
Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy

Re: Video: Was 2011 the Best Year Ever for PlayStation?

eshy76

I just remember the PS4 going into beast mode in 2017 and 2018....I think I prefer 2017 - due to the number of PS exclusives! 2018 was pretty hot too....as any year with God of War and Spider-Man would be...

2017
Persona 5
Horizon Zero Dawn
NieR: Automata
Nex Machina
Nioh
Wipeout: Omega Collection
Pyre
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
Gran Turismo Sport
Gravity Rush 2
Middle-Earth: Shadow of War
Injustice 2
What Remains of Edith Finch
Sonic Mania
Yakuza 0

Assassin's Creed: Origins

2018
Shadow of the Colossus
Astro Bot: Rescue Mission
God of War
Tetris Effect
Marvel's Spider-Man

Moss
Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Detroit: Become Human
Monster Hunter World

Re: Round Up: Far Cry 6 Reviews Paint a Familiar Open World Picture

eshy76

Far Cry 3 was probably the best PS Plus "freebie" I've ever played as I knew nothing about it going into the game and was completely blown away by it.

I wanted Far Cry 4 to be more of the same but somewhere else and that's what we got...but to my surprise I found it a bit of a chore towards the end...formula fatigue...

...I bounced off FC5 after a handful of hours a couple of years ago, so it would seem I would struggle with FC6...I'm in no rush to pick this one up, but good luck to those who have not yet had enough of the formula.

Re: Reaction: PlayStation Showcase 2021 Was Good, But Not Good Enough

eshy76

I enjoyed the show - though it was solid rather than spectacular. I also would have liked to see more information about PS Studios games, but my take is a bit more positive than Sammy's.

The key thing is that I could see myself buying a lot of the games shown, which means a steady flow of gaming on my console. At this stage I'm very interested in:

Forspoken
Project Eve
Deathloop
GT7
Spider-Man 2
Wolverine
GOW: Ragnarok

I also don't really get the negativity in the comments around the God of War trailer...I personally was itching to get back into the impactful combat.

Re: Report: How PlayStation Is Failing Indie Developers

eshy76

What a brilliant report...bravo on a really important and informative piece!

Your move Sony...the Indie offering seemed so strong at the start of the PS4 era...things seem to have fallen away over the course of the last gen and into this one.

Re: Bethesda Apologises to PS5, PS4 Fans 'P*ssed' at Exclusivity

eshy76

@Shepherd_Tallon "the trick being to just play what you actually enjoy, and not whatever is in the top 10"

You have reached maximum wisdom - Platinum trophy unlocked! Exactly right...since I stopped fretting about my backlog and just played what I wanted, my gaming enjoyment has shot up! Just have to stop adding to said backlog...

And I hope you're right about Savage Starlight...In Dog We Trust!

Re: Bethesda Apologises to PS5, PS4 Fans 'P*ssed' at Exclusivity

eshy76

Just make Naughty Dog's next assignment a space RPG to shut this down - job done!

On the topic in hand, though, now that the dust has settled on the deal, it is clear this was a desperate move by Microsoft to try and bridge the quality exclusives gap to Sony and paid enough money for Zenimax to forgo Playstation as a platform. It made business sense to both parties from that perspective.

But, as argued by others above, it was an anti-consumer move by Xbox/MS, I don't see why anyone would deny that. There are two ways to increase a platform's exclusive slate and attract people to your platform: (1) Create your own high quality exclusives (2) Take established IP away from your competition.

MS did number (2). These games were all heading to Xbox anyway, so they didn't gain anything from buying Zenimax except for taking the games away from Playstation and, to a lesser extent, Nintendo gamers.

It is possible for a deal to make sense business-wise, but be bad consumer-wise and this is one of those.

Re: Soapbox: 69% of PlayStation's Revenue Is Driven by PS Store, But the Shopping Experience Sucks

eshy76

If 69% of PlayStation's revenue comes from the PS Store, then as well as making the shopping experience better (which I agree with), Sony need to also get the PS5 HDD expansion solution live ASAP.

The lack of dedicated PS5 storage (I'm not interested in parking my PS5 games on an external HDD) makes me think twice about buying PS5 games on the store, as my console storage is already full.

Re: Reaction: What Next for PlayStation?

eshy76

A seriously great article voicing the thoughts of a lot of PS gamers I'm sure, including myself.

Bethesda was a solid move by Microsoft, no doubt, bolstering Game Pass, but I'm not concerned about Sony's eventual response. I'm sure the company will respond and I think Jim Ryan alluded to a Sony response to Game Pass that is in the works recently.

Moreover, let's not forget in the run-up to the next gen launch, Xbox was making all the running until they stumbled with their game reveals...Sony countered late with that staggering Epic tech demo and surefooted reveals after that. So Sony will respond.

I do agree though, that PlayStation has become less open about its communication over the last couple of years. I thought that was due to being head down in PS5 plotting mode, but if that continues now PS5 has launched, well I'm not a fan of that approach either and would like them to be more energetic as you say.

Re: Fans Wonder if PS4 Pro Has Been Discontinued

eshy76

I wonder if this means that Sony will release a smaller and (gasp!) quieter hardware revision of the Pro to sell at a lower price point. Like others, I think the Pro should become the minimum spec for PS consoles sold....

Re: Site News: We Have a PS5

eshy76

Woohoo PushSquare!!! Time for next gen!

My question would be on storage management...what is the best combination of SSD/External/UHD disc management on a day-to-day basis? Though you might not be able to answer that until some months with the unit...still my greatest curiosity though...

Re: Poll: Will You Buy a PS5?

eshy76

Wonder if there'll be any launch pack in bundles...I remember for the PS4 my the option to convert my vanilla pre-order to the Killzone Shadow Fall bundle popped up nearer launch...

Re: Poll: Will You Buy a PS5?

eshy76

Pre-ordered this morning. Full steam ahead! With my PS4 backlog carrying over, I should be able to avoid buying too many £70 games on day one!
