Re: Skate PS5 Isn't Even Out Yet, But It Already Has Microtransactions

nessisonett

It’s a playtest so I do understand that all facets of the game need to be tested. But idk why they aren’t just using Monopoly money if they’re going to refund players anyway. Working theory is that any testing would be skewed if players know the money isn’t real, so this way they can accurately work out what would be popular enough to be bought with real money and real stakes, even if it’s getting refunded later on. Bit of an extreme testing environment but I can see the logic in that case

@LogicStrikesAgain What you’re failing to realise is that all of these human interactions with chat bots like this would be logged, recorded and used to train more models. It’ll end up an easy method to gather large datasets about entire demographics which obviously will be used for nefarious purposes. No matter how ‘cool’ talking to fake people is, the end result of mass data gathering is targeted advertising which directly leads into algorithmic manipulation of what you see at any given time. Twitter’s coming close to it already, the replacement of your timeline being people you follow turning into whatever the algorithm decides you’ll see being a prime factor. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re using the Grok data to tailor the timeline further into what they think you should be consuming, especially as more sophisticated AI start populating social media.

@LogicStrikesAgain As somebody who has actually worked in the AI field, this isn’t hyperbole at all. The world is on the brink of disaster. Democracy runs entirely on trust and the use of AI will obliterate that completely as the average voter will be unable to tell the difference between what’s real and what’s been generated.

@JustMyOpinion Everything inside a game as of this moment has been written by a writer. It has intent. Every line is designed to convey the writer’s message. If it’s generated instead then you don’t have a clear link between the intent and what’s been farted out by a neural network, you have a prompt which is fed into a process that the user cannot see, and then you have your output. Plus there’s no indication of what the network is trained on, it would have to be copyright-free writing that matched the tone and cantor of the specific game’s style otherwise it doesn’t fit the setting at all. So that would imply that writers would have to generate a heap of reference material to train with, which defeats the purpose of the chatbot anyway. It’s only cool to people that aren’t educated in the field.

Re: Sony's AI Leak Reveals a Creepy Sci-Fi Future PS5 Gamers Don’t Necessarily Want

nessisonett

Nope. Completely destroys any semblance of narrative intent. The control shifts from writers to a neural network trained on data that they haven’t disclosed. It’s an astoundingly terrible idea that saddo nerds will lap up because they don’t understand the implications. Unfortunately these saddo nerds essentially have control of the entire world so enjoy the Earth’s last few years.

Re: Classic LEGO Star Wars to Get Trophy Update on PS Plus Premium

Baffling that this is the PSP version when the PS2 version is right there but you could say that about loads of games on there. Another Lego platinum is downright evil though, I’m going to have to go for it now. Yes I’ve played this game a million times but not the PSP version. I’d only be missing Skywalker Saga, LotR, Hobbit, Incredibles, Movie 2 and the myriad of Ninjago platinums then. I even have the Lego Chima platinum and that game is pretty terrible.

Re: Activision Confirms Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 Won't Be Free Roam on PS5, PS4

nessisonett

@zhoont Pro Skater 4’s approach meant we got incredibly creative goals in every single level like competitions on a flotilla, races, helping prisoners escape Alcatraz, feeding seals, doing a slalom on the Kona Snake Run and so forth, none of which are possible in the 2 minute format. Not to mention that every Pro got their own challenge designed around their career like Bob Burnquist getting a loop with a giant upside down gap that you did tricks between or Bam Margera getting a shopping trolley challenge down the Alcatraz switchback. Heaps of imagination down the toilet in favour of collecting SKATE and getting 100k. Genuinely look up videos of the goals from 4 and you’ll see why it’s such a leap forwards for the series.

What an absolutely colossal sh*tshow. Just do 3 at that point and price it accordingly. This isn’t Pro Skater 4, this is 3 with bonus levels that aren’t designed for 2 minute runs at all. Super super disappointing, I was hyped for this at first, most exciting announcement of the year so far, but they’re trying as hard as possible to ruin that with some classic Activision hubris. Was killing VV worth it?

Re: Rumour: Far Cry Multiplayer Shooter Has Been 'Rebooted' as Ubisoft Turmoil Continues

nessisonett

I just finished New Dawn last night funnily enough. Primal’s probably my favourite one but they’ve all been at least good fun, although I’ve not heard great things about 6. It’s an odd one, the individual stories scattered around the maps following certain characters are leaps and bounds ahead of even first party games, some really great stuff being done there, but the main stories often feel a bit formulaic. I really like the more experimental take that the DLCs go for and so I’d be up for something like that. Just not an extraction shooter!

Re: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Fans Sceptical of Seismic Changes to Fourth Game on PS5, PS4

nessisonett

@get2sammyb New developers thinking they knew better than the original ones is how we ended up with Pro Skater HD. And Pro Skater 5. More info would definitely be nice but as it stands, the community really are not enthused by the messaging coming from the blurb, the trailer went over really well but then there was half a glimpse of College and no other footage from 4 actually in that trailer, it was all stuff from 3. This whole thing just sort of reiterates why VV releasing 3 as an expansion to 1+2 for half the price of the base game would have been the ideal scenario.

Re: Horizon Online Snaffles Bungie's Design Lead As Guerrilla Builds All-Star Team Around Live Service PS5 Game

nessisonett

I’d imagine an online Horizon would be endless chasing of increasing damage numbers with any tactical gameplay from the single-player games gutted in favour of a never-ending grind that just so happens to be sped up using real money. To be fair, you could just have any plot stuff outsourced to ChatGPT and it would be indistinguishable from the quality of the NPC interactions of the other games. I’m sure the chuds could make their sex doll protagonist of their dreams in a character creator even if the lack of any dialogue or emotion would only take it one shade of cardboard below Aloy as a protagonist.

@Lowdefal Bam was a skateboarder first but Jackass definitely made him more of a name than his skating did (although CKY was fairly big in its own right a year before). He’s hopefully doing better now but there’s no way he’ll be in these games any time soon.

I’d argue Tony Hawk would still have been the biggest skater in the world without the 900 or even his games, skating was at its peak when he was at his peak and the X Games were a commercially friendly output for an often alternative and underground lifestyle. He’d probably be the one skater brought to mind but wouldn’t be as much of a name that even your nan knows as he is thanks to the games. Bear in mind though that Pro Skater 1 came out in ‘99, you could argue that skating was past its cultural peak when Pro Skater revived it. I mean by that point, Spike Jonze had directed Being John Malkovich and Jason Lee was pivoting away from the skating too, a lot of the skater kids had ‘grown up’ by then.
