I like this a lot! Snappy and easy to remember, it'll (hopefully) quickly become associated with some very high quality 1st party exclusives that can all be referred to under this umbrella!
@Adol_Xin Thanks! I wouldn't worry about that if I were you - I'm pretty bad at video games all things considered, I've played them for most of my life but have never been very good at them! I found dark souls was very good at encouraging you to persevere though, and every victory against a boss fight feels unbelievably satisfying. You're constantly getting better at the game, and it is a much more manageable game than a lot of people would have you believe! It's very difficult, but you do always feel like you can overcome it. I would strongly recommend you give it a try!
I managed to finish Dark Souls last night! My first From Software game, and I loved everything about it, from the world design to the incredible combat. Am currently looking at potentially get another From Software game now, maybe Bloodborne or Sekiro, but haven't decided yet!
Apart from that, I'll be continuing my second playthrough of Fire Emblem Three Houses, which is still standing strong as my favourite strategy game
This score was kinda expected, but a small part of me was hoping it would surprise me and be a great game. Unfortunately it just looks like a collection of free to play flash games
I decided to get back to Dark Souls this weekend, since I took a break from it when I was writing my dissertation. I was in Anor Londo, and FINALLY got past those blasted archers, and everything was starting to look up. Unfortunately I'm now stuck on Ornstein and Smough as they perpetually rip my a new one. Every time I don't think the game could get any harder it finds a way to!
Switching between Link's Awakening and Steinsgate Elite - Steinsgate is a bit of a slog at the moment but I've been told it picks up so am persevering there, but Link's Awakening is brilliant! It's one of the few zelda games I've never played through before, and it's filled with tons of charm. Easily my favourite 2D zelda so far!
@crimsontadpoles It had lots of flaws but I could overlook all of them cause it was just a lot of fun, had a great story and I was so invested in every single character! I've heard that the second one is absolutely brilliant, potentially better than the first, although these comments are putting me off playing V3!
I'm playing Metroid Prime for the first time, and it's a great game. My only problems have been that it's frustratingly obtuse where to go at times, even more so than other metroidvanias I've played, and the lack of a fast travel system leads to some of the slowest backtracking ever. That said, I'm still really enjoying it!
I've also just started playing Steinsgate Elite, which I know next to nothing about, but it's been a while since I've played a visual novel so thought it might be worth a try
Automata is my favourite video game of all time, so this has me hyped beyond belief! I know very little about the first Nier besides that whilst the plot was meant to be good, the gameplay was on the iffy side, so if that gets touched up this should be fantastic!
I'll take anything Nier related quite frankly - I've only ever played Automata, but it's one of my favourite games of all time, if not my favourite, so both a remaster of the original or a third game in the franchise would be absolutely phenomenal for me!
Really great idea for a list! I don't have a ton of time to play games anymore, so I only play one long game per year now, and so playing more shorter games like these allows me to experience lots of different games as opposed to 100 hours of just one
I'm having a love hate relationship with Dark Souls. I've just got to the Capra Demon, and have loved parts of the game a lot. But some things, like checkpoints not being near bosses, are really starting to grate, and the game doesn't explain enough of its insanely complex mechanics for my liking. I'm also dying. A LOT. But I am making sure but steady progress!
I started playing Dark Souls for the first time a few days ago and people were not lying - this game is kicking my ass. I've just beaten the Taurus Demon and reached the Undead Parish after a good 7 hours, so at this rate I don't think I'm ever going to beat this game! I'm enjoying it when it's not insanely frustrating though!
Disappointed it's not another game, but nonetheless it's still great news! I'm really glad to see one of my favourite game developers hitting new heights!
Journey to the Savage Planet and Patapon 2 don't sound like anything special to me, but that Kentucky Route Zero track was excellent, and your talk about a scene fuelled almost entirely by music really intrigues me. I might have to pick that one up
I'm interested but cautious. I loved the original Persona 5, but its biggest issue is its pacing, particularly the build-up to and including the fifth palace. Unless that content is streamlined, I'll just find any of these new additions to bloat the game even more unnecessarily. But I'm happy to be proven wrong, I'm just going to wait for reviews first!
Darksiders has always slotted into the "that looks alright but I'll probably never play them" tier of games for me, and this one looks like no exception
@kyleforrester87 Just wondering why you hate Bayonetta so much? I understand the games aren't for everyone, but they've got some excellent combat, music, bosses and setpieces, what specifically don't you like about it?
I started Luigi's Mansion 3 this week, and it's a thoroughly enjoyable game, so I'll be continuing with that. Each floor in the mansion is brimming with originality, and whilst the game isn't especially difficult, it's just so much fun. I might play a bit more Baba is You as well, but I've been stuck on a puzzle for ages and it's driving me mad, and I refuse to look up the solution online!
Considering how much these entries are dividing people, is there any hope of an "honourable mentions" list to satiate the masses? I just want to see one of Shovel Knight, Hollow Knight or Nier: Automata on one of these lists!
I'm nearing the end of devil may cry v, so will aim to finish that this weekend! I knew I'd enjoy it since I loved both the bayonetta games, but it's even better than I was expecting - the combat is just so deep and exciting, I'm determined to master it!
@darkswabber Wouldn't you call Joker and Cloud Playstation representatives? I know they're not first party characters, but their games were/are only available on Playstation platforms
I really enjoyed Axiom Verge, but I unfortunately played it just before I played Hollow Knight, so I always completely forget it exists when compared to the best metroidvania I've ever played and one of my favourite games of all time. It's a shame though cause I did like it, and whilst it had a few problems in terms of its map design, I'm very much looking forward to this!
More games should definitely do this. Currently you're presented with easy, normal, hard and expert, and when you're loading up a game for the first time having never played it before, this may as well be meaningless! I really hope this approach becomes more standard across games
Despite a wide variety of new games I want to play, I accidentally started a new playthrough of Fire Emblem Three Houses and am once again completely addicted to it, so that's taking centre stage this weekend!
I finished both Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Spider-Man this week both of which were incredible, and I would be shocked if Fire Emblem isn't my game of the year by the end of 2019. But now I'm not particularly sure what to start playing, I might give Danganronpa a go since I love Ace Attorney so much and need to try some more visual novels!
Considering how scathing Push Square normally are of generic box art I'm quite surprised that they think the official one looks alright; it's just so boring! All four of those are wonderful!
@Ralizah @Kidfried Ahh brilliant, I've heard a bit about these series but now I've got some proper recommendations I'll put them at the top of the list to play next!
@get2sammyb Haha, despite my love of the Ace Attorney games I haven't actually played any other visual novel games. I was intending to branch out soon though, and this looks like the perfect first one to try!
I've never played a proper Borderlands game, but I played Tales from the Borderlands a couple of years ago and absolutely adored it; it's probably my favourite Telltale game. The return of some of the characters from that game may be enough to sway me, but I need to do more research into what the gameplay of the mainline games is
@Flaming_Kaiser Oh no Concrete Genie was by far the game that excited me the most, but I'm remaining cautiously optimistic for it - I want to see what reviews say first
Hmm, nothing in there that excites me at all, but then again the next one they do might be completely full of things that interest me, so I can't judge yet. It was shorter and had less "big news" than a Nintendo direct, but if Sony does these monthly, promoting smaller games, then I can see it working really well for them
@nessisonett Oh no, not sacrilegious at all, I really enjoy all of them! Apollo Justice is probably my least favourite, but that's just because the only "amazing" case for me is the very first one, which really raises the bar for the rest of the game too high. I'm a pretty big Dual Destinies supporter though - it has its flaws, and I feel like Spirit of Justice improves upon every single one of these criticisms, but it's still an incredibly fun game, and looking back I might even prefer it to the first game
@Ralizah Yeah I pretty much agree with all of that! I always felt like Apollo got a bit shafted in Dual Destinies to make way for Phoenix again, who didn't really need the spotlight, so I was so glad to see really take centre stage in Spirit of Justice. I haven't actually played the DLC case yet, and whilst I would say "it's DLC, it doesn't count as part of the main game", Dual Destinies' DLC is my second favourite case in that game and elevated it a lot for me. Spirit of Justice's fourth case doesn't actively offend me either, it's just a bit forgetful, which is fine considering it's so short.
I'm really hoping the next game puts Athena as the main protagonist, she is definitely lacking the most of the three main lawyers now
@Ralizah Sorry to cut in but I'm really glad to see another Spirit of Justice supporter - it's a very close second for me as best game in the franchise, since nothing's going to beat T&T, but it's a really strong argument for why this series shouldn't stop making games just yet

@ZeroOverOne Ahhh that's fair enough then! I'm definitely gonna play it, hopefully I'll enjoy it just as much as you do!
Re: NieR Replicant Coming to PS4 with 10 Year Anniversary Revival
@ZeroOverOne Coming from someone who adores Automata and has never played the first Nier, why do you love Replicant so much and dislike Automata?
Re: NieR Replicant Coming to PS4 with 10 Year Anniversary Revival
Automata is my favourite video game of all time, so this has me hyped beyond belief! I know very little about the first Nier besides that whilst the plot was meant to be good, the gameplay was on the iffy side, so if that gets touched up this should be fantastic!
