Never played a street fighter game before, but this seems like an excellent place to start! Quick question: it seems as if the modern controls are good, but do have some disadvantages to the classic ones. Would you recommend starting on modern and then switching to classic, or just start on classic and see if I can manage it?
Still not a huge fan of Elden Ring - I much prefer the more linear design and interconnected world of Bloodborne and dark souls. I'm very happy people loved this game, but I'd like for from software to develop both the open world style and the linear style games. The huge success of Elden Ring worries me, because I can see future souls-like games purely being open world, which would be such a shame!
I honestly have no idea why people have such a problem with squeeze gaps? Yes they're obviously a disguised loading screen, but they're still better than pulling you out of the game to watch a blank loading screen. Overall it really doesn't seem like something worth being upset about
Now that the console is available, and big proper PS5 exclusives seem to now be properly dropping, I'm planning on getting a PS5 within the next month or so. And I can't be alone in this mentality, it seems as if even Sony agrees with me considering their renewed marketing campaign. To get a new console and then for the pro to release just one year later would feel like a slap in the face to me and many other consumers. I'm hoping this rumour doesn't prove true, but I guess we'll see!
Got my final uni exams this week so I'll be playing very little video games unfortunately! When I've got a bit of time I might finish off Signalis, I think I'm close to the end of that, and I've had Fire Emblem Engage on my shelf for the past month or so but haven't had a chance to start it yet, so maybe I'll give that a go!
This is really interesting - online I seem to have noticed a growing narrative that Microsoft are nailing it a lot more than Sony this generation (not one I agree with, but it's definitely there). However, it seems like in terms of general popularity (the main metric that will matter in the eyes of Sony) playstation has never been more desirable. I wonder what it is that's grabbing more and more people to the PS5? It was easy to point to last generation, with the Xbox One's terrible launch, and once PS4 got a foothold in the market it was easy to convince friends etc. to jump on too. But this generation, I'm struggling to pinpoint exactly why Sony is still doing so much better than Microsoft
Now that this is nearly upon us, God of War Ragnarok got amazing reviews, and Spider-Man 2 is later this year, I think the time has very nearly arrived to purchase a PS5...
I've been desperate to play this game for YEARS. I love Platinum's library of games, but have never had the opportunity to play this, since I've only got a PS4, and my PC just isn't good enough for this. Praying that this is an announcement of a remaster!
£200 for any controller is frankly absurd in my book, but I'm definitely not the target audience for this particular item, so I'm fine on that. But I'd imagine if I was the type to get this controller then I'd probably be playing games in very long and intense sessions. 6 hours before charging is pretty ridiculous. I know this is far more advanced than a Switch Pro Controller, but that can last up to 40 hours - nearly seven times the length of this for under half the price. I feel like more should've been done here
Whilst it could avoid being terrible, it's coming across awfully similar to Marvel's Avengers to me. I'm going to keep a cautious eye on this one as the Batman Arkham games are great, but my hopes aren't high.
I bought tunic a few days ago and can't put it down - the manual mechanic is absolutely wonderful, and the exploration is unbelievably satisfying. Really enjoying my time with it!
It's lists like these that make me realise how I spend most the year playing retro games I wasn't alive to play, games last generation, random indie games released over the past couple of years, and then one big release (Elden Ring this year), making it impossible for me to vote! Enjoy the new voting style though, it's wonderful!
@TheArt That's very fair, and I'm really glad you had that experience! Unfortunately, it just didn't work that way for me. I never found the need to level up to beat any bloodborne or dark souls boss - I felt like I was at the right level after just exploring through the levels and fighting through them. However, Elden Ring really felt like it needed to me to explore to level up and be good enough (unless I'm one of those crazy people who beat it on a dance mat...), and I found the exploration mostly gave me summons I didn't want, weapons and spells I couldn't use, and a lot of mini dungeons with repeated layouts, enemies, and bosses. Bloodborne's chalices are rubbish and repetitive for sure, but I completely ignored them and it makes zero difference to the game, whereas Elden Ring really expects you to explore these dungeons, and they're just not good enough to do so in my opinion. It doesn't help that, in general, I just struggle with open world games, and prefer a tighter, more linear experience! So unfortunately this one was just not for me, but that's okay!
@Neither_scene Sekiro's combat is just so finely tuned, I'd kill for another game like that. Hopefully armoured core will scratch that itch of From Software's signature style without repeating the mechanics and combat of a souls game!
I wasn't a huge fan of Elden Ring despite loving Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Dark Souls - I felt that the open world was at odds with the idea of overcoming huge challenges, and that all the game wanted me to do was to explore in very samey dungeons and caves to level up and find spirits (that I didn't like using) to crush the boss. I appreciate the game is for a lot of people, but it just didn't work for me. I know this game is a far cry away from that style of gameplay, but I loved Sekiro's take on action-oriented combat, and I'm very willing to give Armoured Core VI a go to see if it's for me!
I love the Switch but the Pokemon situation makes me so sad. The only way there would be any real change is if the poor optimisation leads to poor sales, but if anything the opposite is happening! It's a real shame for a series that has the potential to be absolutely astounding, but always just aims for a barely passing grade.
@Colour I'm going to stay VERY sceptical on this front until the end of 2023. At the end of 2021, everyone was saying how meh 2021 was but how wonderful 2022 looks, and now we're at the end of 2022, people are repeating that cycle for next year.
Ideally getting a PS5 in June, when I graduate from medical school. I've also never played the witcher 3, despite it looking truly wonderful. I think I've chosen the first game I'm going to be playing on my brand new console next year...
@Korgon this was what put me off ever getting the first game in the first place, but they've said that the characters will interact and stories will intertwine a lot more in this one. Still going to wait for reviews to see just to what extent this happens, but I think things are looking quite promising!
I would never get this in a million years, but it's cool that they're finally doing an officially licensed Pro controller for those who want it! If I had a spare £200 lying around though it would definitely be saved towards PSVR2 instead of this, but that's just me
I'm so excited for this - unfortunately don't have a PS5 yet so will probably hold off playing this until I do, but as soon as I get one this is the first game I'm playing. I've just got no doubt it's gonna be a masterpiece!
It's just incredibly hard to justify this. No one plays Horizon Zero Dawn on their PS5 and thinks it needs any kind of remaster. This would be a poor release in the best of times, but this is a time when Sony's first party output is incredibly limited, and when some of the very few games they are releasing are just touched up versions of games that are very playable on the PS5 already, it just baffles me.
@Judal27 Obviously there are A LOT of Wii U ports on Switch, but I think they're far more justified than this. The Wii U sold shockingly, and a lot of excellent games were trapped on there, so it only makes sense to give them another go with a much larger install base. Also, the more obvious argument there is you can't actually play any Wii U games on the switch! Neither of these are the case here - the PS4 sold fantastically well, and you can play every PS4 very happily on PS5. Again, not saying Nintendo hasn't milked the Wii U dry for every penny it's worth, but this rumour would be the most egregious example of remastering and porting I can think of in the video game industry
I love E3 week, and despite the convention not being what it once was, and really hope it comes back in some form. A whole week of video game announcements was always so magical and exciting, and I love watching all the conferences, even the reallyyyy bad ones.
However, I just can't see Sony returning to this. It's not like Sony just do their announcements at a different time of year now, they basically NEVER do any announcements. It's been over a year since their last showcase, and even that wasn't anything huge to write home about. Sony are taking it slow and steady with their announcements, and the idea of one big blowout event seems to be the antithesis to their current way or working. I can't see them going back to E3 anytime soon.
Currently playing through Blasphemous to try and scratch more of my metroidvania itch. It's a largely enjoyable game, with pockets of deep frustration when you die and it simply isn't your fault. The world is awesome so far though, and I'm looking forward to getting thoroughly lost in it this weekend!
Me and my brother are also considering buying Monster Hunter Rise to play together online, but we've never played a Monster Hunter game before and it all looks quite intimidating! Think we might take the plunge though
I played this with my brother a year ago. We played about 3 worlds, and we just absolutely hated it. The game didn't do anything BADLY per se, but it's really slow, incredibly easy, and any charm the game had ran out very quickly. They just sort of plop you in quite big open spaces, with a limited movement system and very little of interest to collect. It was a shame because we were looking for a great coop experience, but this wasn't it for us. I'm glad some people above have clearly enjoyed it though!
Decided to download AM2R on a whim, and am really enjoying it so far. Has a good amount of the exploration element of metroid, which I found disappointingly lacking in Dread.
I may also buy stardew valley soon, as my life is incredibly chaotic at the moment and it sounds like gaming comfort food!
I've heard amazing things about this, but also heard its concepts thrive a bit better on PC, with some of the meta stuff. May be wrong though! I tried the demo and my laptop seemed to run it fine, so will probably go for it on there.
First one is absolutely my favourite PSVR game. It's great just as a normal video game - the characters and story are memorable, the survival-based gameplay loop is fun and addicting, but then the VR elements are just incredible. Creeping around an abandoned school gym with zombies hiding around every corner, jamming knives into their heads, desperately picking up glass bottles and smashing them to kill zombies, it's an incredible experience.
I haven't even got a PS5 yet as there's just not enough exclusive to it to justify a purchase, but when I do, PSVR2 is gonna be the next thing I save up for immediately
I'm at Leyndell in Elden Ring, about 50 hours in. Really loving it, although I have some big problems with it, and it's definitely worse than both Bloodborne and Sekiro in my book. Still, I'm adoring it, and hoping to make some good progress this weekend!
@darkswabber I'm not a big fates fan to be honest - all the characters are very one-note, and the birthright maps drag quite a lot for me. I would strongly recommended conquest, despite the nonsensical plot, its map design is some of the best out of the fire emblem games I've played!
I loved the first game in the reboot, but wasn't a big fan of rise - the open areas filled with fetch quests were boring, repetitive, and killed the pacing, and the plot was poor. I never played shadow as a result. I'll keep an eye on this though, maybe it'll bring me back on track to the series!
@Diamond_Dog I'm sure you'll get into it! Zelda is one of my favourite franchises but breath of the wild took me a while to get into. Once you're fully engrossed in the world though it's a genuinely magical game. Hopefully it clicks with you soon!
Elden Ring! I'm very busy at the moment but have managed to find time to play it here and there and I'm adoring it. Just got to Liurna of the Lakes, which seems like an alright area albeit less interesting than Limgrave. Still not entirely sold on the open world element of the game, but I adore from software games and their combat, so it does more than enough right for me!
@Diamond_Dog I honestly think, if you're struggling to get it to click with you, you should abandon Kakariko village and just explore. The Kakariko village questline is dreadfully dull, and whilst it's good to set up the main quest of the game, if you're not currently feeling the game and need more incentive to keep playing, I would just explore around and experiment for a bit, then come back to doing the main quest when you're more engrossed in the game!
Used to be a big Harry Potter fan, not so much anymore, but this has the potential to recapture my imagination and love of the series. Looking forward to this.
I think one is very much due. Spider-Man 2 (and I guess Wolverine but that's AGES off) are the only PS5 exclusive games on the horizon. Sony has yet to really convince me to get a PS5, and whilst I know it'll make games like Elden Ring and God of War: Ragnarok play a bit better, I don't think I can justify £500 on a slightly prettier game. I need exclusives to drive me to get that purchase, and all of those exclusives are still coming to PS4. If they have a great showcase soon promising lots more PS5 exclusive games coming though, then I'm much more tempted...
@LiamCroft Thanks for the review, look amazing and I'm very excited! Quick question - did you get the chance to try it out on base PS4 at all? I unfortunately still haven'tanaged to acquire a PS5, and was wondering if it runs acceptably on PS4. Thanks!
Definitely doesn't look like a masterpiece, but then again it isn't trying to. Think it'll be a lot of fun. I doubt I'll watch it in the cinema, particularly when there are lots of other phenomenal movies showing right now. I'll watch it when it comes to netflix I'm sure
I started Resident Evil Village last night and it's absolutely excellent, thoroughly enjoying it! I played Resident Evil 7 on VR a couple of years ago and I don't think anything will ever top what a terrifying experience that was, but I'm enjoying that this game is doing its own thing, it's a lot of fun.
I'm also playing UNSIGHTED, which is an indie game that seems to have gone under the radar for a lot of people, but I'd really recommend you pick it up! It's a top-down metroidvania, which some very satisfying combat, but the interesting part is that everyone in the game, shop-keepers, your assistant, and even yourself, has a time limit until they die. You can extend their time limit with a certain rare item you find throughout the world, but you're constantly having to choose who you're going to save, and at points inevitably having to give it to yourself, and it's a really cool mechanic that connects you to the characters and the world
This is going to be insanely hard for Playstation to come back from. As you mentioned, there is technically an optimistic side in the sense that Playstation are really going to have to bring their all and diversify their output of games if they want to stand a chance, but I'm quite cynical about them pulling this off successfully. Guess we'll see!
I don't play any of Activision's game anyway, they just don't appeal to me, but this trend towards monopolising all of the cross-platform games in the industry is really disturbing. I also don't understand how Phil Spencer can claim Playstation making their own exclusives is anti-consumer, only for the company to make acquisitions like this. Really not a fan of this, and it can only be bad for the industry
I love a good metroidvania, and have heard lots of good things about this. I think after I play metroid dread (might to take the plunge this weekend) I'll give this a go!
Bloodborne was the best game I played this year, and Sekiro was the best game I played last year. I don't need to see this gameplay showcase: I have confidence I'm going to absolutely love this game. All I need now is to play it!
@get2sammyb One of the games on PS4 that would benefit most from a PS5 port I feel, with 60fps and dramatically increased loading times, this game would be even better
I played Bloodborne just a few months ago, and absolutely adored it. The best game I've played this year, just beating Hades. The atmosphere, the bosses, the level design, I just loved it! This demaster looks pretty cool to be honest, but yes as soon as Sony has its eye on it it'll never see the light of day again
I'd probably want this to have absolutely nothing to do with the movies. That said, a single player experience, involving being quiet and manipulating sound around you, could be absolutely amazing in the right hands
@AFCC tbf she isn't obliged to copy the source material here. She can very much just read the script and put her own interpretation on Ellie without playing the game

@darkswabber I'm not a big fates fan to be honest - all the characters are very one-note, and the birthright maps drag quite a lot for me. I would strongly recommended conquest, despite the nonsensical plot, its map design is some of the best out of the fire emblem games I've played!
Re: New Tomb Raider Game Confirmed, Uses Unreal Engine 5
I loved the first game in the reboot, but wasn't a big fan of rise - the open areas filled with fetch quests were boring, repetitive, and killed the pacing, and the plot was poor. I never played shadow as a result. I'll keep an eye on this though, maybe it'll bring me back on track to the series!
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 418
@Diamond_Dog I'm sure you'll get into it! Zelda is one of my favourite franchises but breath of the wild took me a while to get into. Once you're fully engrossed in the world though it's a genuinely magical game. Hopefully it clicks with you soon!
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 418
Re: State of Play Showcase for Hogwarts Legacy Coming This Thursday
Used to be a big Harry Potter fan, not so much anymore, but this has the potential to recapture my imagination and love of the series. Looking forward to this.
Re: UK Sales Charts: Gran Turismo 7 Races Past Elden Ring for Number One Debut
@lolwhatno You can arguably add Resident Evil 7 to that list as well!
Re: PS5, PS4 Rumourmongers Reckon a Sony Showcase Is Coming in March
I think one is very much due. Spider-Man 2 (and I guess Wolverine but that's AGES off) are the only PS5 exclusive games on the horizon. Sony has yet to really convince me to get a PS5, and whilst I know it'll make games like Elden Ring and God of War: Ragnarok play a bit better, I don't think I can justify £500 on a slightly prettier game. I need exclusives to drive me to get that purchase, and all of those exclusives are still coming to PS4. If they have a great showcase soon promising lots more PS5 exclusive games coming though, then I'm much more tempted...
Re: Elden Ring (PS5) - Likely Another FromSoftware Great
@LiamCroft Thanks for the review, look amazing and I'm very excited! Quick question - did you get the chance to try it out on base PS4 at all? I unfortunately still haven'tanaged to acquire a PS5, and was wondering if it runs acceptably on PS4. Thanks!
Re: Uncharted Movie's Final Trailer Is Corny, Compelling
Definitely doesn't look like a masterpiece, but then again it isn't trying to. Think it'll be a lot of fun. I doubt I'll watch it in the cinema, particularly when there are lots of other phenomenal movies showing right now. I'll watch it when it comes to netflix I'm sure
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 410
You can extend their time limit with a certain rare item you find throughout the world, but you're constantly having to choose who you're going to save, and at points inevitably having to give it to yourself, and it's a really cool mechanic that connects you to the characters and the world
Re: Reaction: Activision Blizzard Buyout Is Devastating for PS5, PS4
This is going to be insanely hard for Playstation to come back from. As you mentioned, there is technically an optimistic side in the sense that Playstation are really going to have to bring their all and diversify their output of games if they want to stand a chance, but I'm quite cynical about them pulling this off successfully. Guess we'll see!
Re: Xbox Now Owns Legendary PlayStation Series Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon
Re: Final Free Blasphemous Update Out Now, Adds Lots of New Content
I love a good metroidvania, and have heard lots of good things about this. I think after I play metroid dread (might to take the plunge this weekend) I'll give this a go!
Re: Elden Ring Looks Awesome in 20 Minutes of Gameplay Action
Bloodborne was the best game I played this year, and Sekiro was the best game I played last year. I don't need to see this gameplay showcase: I have confidence I'm going to absolutely love this game. All I need now is to play it!
Re: Bloodborne PSX Is a Cease and Desist Disaster Waiting to Happen
@get2sammyb One of the games on PS4 that would benefit most from a PS5 port I feel, with 60fps and dramatically increased loading times, this game would be even better
Re: Bloodborne PSX Is a Cease and Desist Disaster Waiting to Happen
I played Bloodborne just a few months ago, and absolutely adored it. The best game I've played this year, just beating Hades. The atmosphere, the bosses, the level design, I just loved it! This demaster looks pretty cool to be honest, but yes as soon as Sony has its eye on it it'll never see the light of day again
Re: A Quiet Place Movie Getting a Single Player Horror Game Adaptation
I'd probably want this to have absolutely nothing to do with the movies. That said, a single player experience, involving being quiet and manipulating sound around you, could be absolutely amazing in the right hands
Re: The Last of Us TV Show Sets Like 'Walking into the Game'
@AFCC tbf she isn't obliged to copy the source material here. She can very much just read the script and put her own interpretation on Ellie without playing the game
