Most killer app games for Sony have a PS4 counterpart or an inevitable PC release to give them legs. Final Fantasy XVI is a rare true exclusive for PS5. Even if platform sales are up, games for it still cost an arm and a leg.
@Amnesiac if you interact with other players sitting at the Battle Hub arcade cabinets, it’ll tell you their rank before you have to commit to fighting them. Conveniently, the game will tag players who are close to your skill level as well when you view their profiles.
@Shepherd_Tallon as a casual fighting game fan who can win a few matches but gets cooked alive by anyone with skill, I think the game’s push for accessibility is a resounding success.
Modern controls take the pressure off memorising inputs and let you focus on the raw strategy. I use the classic controls personally but every player I fight using the modern controls still has to open me up first and put in the work for their wins. I think it’s a fine playing field leveller and not a crutch. Well done, Capcom, for their implementation.
The single player campaign is actually huge. It’s a pseudo-RPG so as you level up, you gradually unlock the fighting mechanics as though they were new abilities for you avatar. Smart tutorialising in my opinion. You can also mix and match moves from the main fighters on your avatars so you can sample the various playstyles and see what you like.
The Battle Hub is a great way to muck about with players of your own skill level too. If you’re doing competitive ranked matches online, you do 10 placement matches so the game can determine what skill tier you’d be most comfortable in. You can very much start at the bottom and work you’re way up if you’re so inclined instead of being forever stuck in a purgatory of pros kicking your ass.
@Uncharted2007 I can’t really think of a large legacy publisher that hasn’t pared back their portfolio to a few tentpole franchises. Nintendo, Sony, Sega, Ubisoft and Activision are all equally guilty of sitting on their IP. I think it’s the natural fallout of needing big sellers to cover the cost of triple A game dev these days.
I think Final Fantasy is one of the few series where the ever rising number for the mainline series is part of the brand. Personally, it makes me feel like I’m beholden to an extremely important legacy in gaming, foundational to its genre and still going strong. I like the anthology quality to the series as well, that each title constitutes its own world and stories, yet is still part of this incredible greater whole.
I’ve made a habit of palette cleansing after a big AAA release with a cool indie game. On the console front, Switch definitely seems to rule the roost when it comes to indies.
Even as the biggest Crash fan in the world, this is simply not doing it for me. I would prefer they continued to produce original platformer adventures.
Looking forward to platinuming Dead Space. It seems to be designed around the logic of multiple play throughs that develop your character’s stats and loadout as well as your own skill.
@extragood I would say you’re better off sticking with the PS4 version. The additions to the PS5 version seem mostly superfluous as far as I can see (new craftables and structures). I’m super invested in the loop of optimising my delivery routes but I can’t imagine myself being in a rush to replay it due to needing to go through the story to unlock everything again.
That’s some serious commitment from Capcom to their eSports community. If nothing else, it means they’re exceptionally confident in SF6 which bodes well. Meanwhile Nintendo’s out offering twenty quid eShop credit for Smash players.
Oh wow, I assumed it’d be solid but now my attention is piqued. The first game was uniquely suited to my need to kill 100 or so hours during the pandemic lockdowns. Looks like I need to make some room in my schedule somehow.
So very well deserved. I think a mainstream television audience will help vindicate a lot of the creative choices that toxic fans with rubbish media literacy trashed in Part 2.
@GreatAuk exactly my issue. Crash 4 was really good at keeping the focus on the platforming so I’m hoping a Toys For Bob helmed orignal Spyro would do the same.
Binged the Reignited Trilogy over Christmas and by the Year of the Dragon, I was begging it to end. This is coming from someone who loved Spyro way back when, but the over abundance of gimmicks and extras in that game was fatiguing. That being said, Toys For Bob are a phenomenal team.
Not a huge Last of Us fan but chuffed to see the show executed to a high standard. We’re in a golden age of adaptations. Castlevania, Cuphead, Arcane, Sonic, Mario and now the Last of Us.
I know Bloober is a pretty spotty when it comes to weaving sensitive subject matter in their horror titles but actively rooting for them to ***** up the remake is plain old cynical to me.
@The_Pixel_King you’re going to hit a wall with early boss Margit the Fell Omen but don’t be discouraged. That’s your cue to diverge from the story path, make your own adventures and level up as you please. Elden Ring is one of the rare open world game that doesn’t bombard you with objectives but allows the land to pique your curiosity. Don’t be afraid to summon other players co-op as well, that’s half the fun.
Took me 3 runs of Demons Souls to get the plat just now. Don’t mind it at all when the trophies nudge you towards experimenting and trying new things each go around.

@Shepherd_Tallon you’re welcome. For the first time in my life playing a fighting game, I feel like I’m learning and growing. It’s amazing.

Really enjoying my time with SF6
Re: There's Already Concern Over Crash Team Rumble's Future
As a die hard Crash fan, I have no intention of picking this up. I actually like the concept the actual end product gives me the ick.

***** off, Embracer
Re: Poll: Was Ubisoft Forward 2023 Princely or Just Pants?
Prince of Persia looks brilliant
Re: When Is Ubisoft Forward 2023?
Really, the Rayman expansion for Mario + Rabbids is the only thing I’m interested in

Rayman next, you cowards!

Re: Shocking: Hideo Kojima Not Involved in Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake
Not necessarily a red flag for me. My expectations are different, of course, since this is a remake of an existing Metal Gear and not a new one.
Re: Sony 'Not in Talks' with CD Projekt RED About an Acquisition
Surely the PC market is too important to CD Projekt Red for them to get in bed with a console manufacturer.

So yeah I like the numbers.
Re: PS5 Exclusivity Over Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake Appears Uncertain
Weird that Konami would deign to make Metal Gear multi-console but not Silent Hill.
Re: Horizon Forbidden West Has Become One of PS5's Best-Selling Games
Horizon was the game I got to be impressed by the PS5. Impressed I was. Now my girlfriend is playing it and is similarly enrapt by the world.
Re: Xbox Boss Admits Microsoft Can't 'Outconsole' PS5
The Wii U was a disaster and now the Switch is running rings around the competition. Brand loyalty is no substitute for a compelling product.
Re: Capcom Aiming for Street Fighter 6 to Be the Best-Selling Game in the Series
I can see it happening. Capcom games are good for going on sale which should help.
Re: Microsoft Dealt Major Blow as UK Blocks Activision Buyout

Re: Preview: Crash Team Rumble's Beta Delivers an Undercooked Helping of Wumpa on PS5, PS4
Well, the Crash revival was good while it lasted
Re: Capcom Just Can't Stop Winning as Stock Hits All-Time High
Capcom has delivered nothing but the goods since Resident Evil VII.
Re: Soapbox: Hold On, Is the PS3 a Retro Console?
The Wii introducing the Virtual Console back in 06 coloured my perception of what is “retro.” PSOne classics too.

Got Death Stranding in the Black Friday sale last year. €20 for over 100 hours of gameplay.
Re: Resident Evil 4, Street Fighter 6 the Big Winners from State of Play
Capcom’s been on a roll with non-stop bangers since 2017.

Actually took the plunge with Death Stranding Director’s Cut. Hopelessly addicted but I played a little Dead Space and it’s just chef’s kiss

Long live single player. Long love survival horror.

Betting it all on Dead Space

Picked it up on my Switch. It’s a lovely wee fusion of Zelda and Dark Souls. A bit too short for the price though.
