@MidnightDragonDX Yeah, that seems like an obvious choice for multiplat if MS is going to go this route. Not having ES 6 on PS5 would be leaving stupid $ on the table.
Sega is my favorite gaming company of all-time (never prevented me from also enjoying the Nintendo, PlayStation and Xbox brands as well, just to be clear) and I was in my later teen years when that company went from being a hardware manufacturer to third party so none of what's going on with Xbox is bothering me as much as it seems to some younger fans. My main take away here is that, as has been the case ever since the Don Mattrick days, MS is horrible at getting out in front of things and delivering a clear message.
@Porco I don't even have to play Stellar Blade to be able to tell you its gameplay will be far more polished than Wanted: Dead. And the latter, for all its jank, is one of my favorite PS5 games (can't help it, I'm old and still love games from that PS2/Xbox/GC era).
Apparently Gamestop in-store pre-orders aren't open yet but as soon as they are I'll pre-order a physical copy and hope to be able to buy the Deluxe Edition content separately from PSN similar to what I did with Tekken 8 on launch day.
@Neither_scene Yeah. I'm a PlayStation guy but I also like Xbox and MS dropping out of the console race will not be a good thing. As much as I like Nintendo, it doesn't compete in the high-end market, so basically there's only going to be one real option now. Hope I'm wrong but people are probably right that if there was no truth to the rumors, they would've been shut down by now.
@get2sammyb
I forgot about that article. But I know I saw it because I commented, concerned it would get censored (like I was concerned about Stellar Blade too before the recent re-reveal). Will be interesting to see what happens if Stellar Blade sells well and if the companies enjoyed working together, maybe that would lead to PS4 and 5 ports, even if the gameplay is very simplistic. There's probably more simple, worse games already available on PSN.
Hyped for the game, don't need to see a State of Play because already have a good enough idea what to expect and want to avoid spoilers. Going to have to buy one of those Western Digital SSDs so I have enough storage space on my PS5 when this hits.
@Zenos I saw the story floating around and it seems there was more to it than just her being feminist. Maybe I lack morals, but I don't let any of this change whether I purchase games or not. If I did, I wouldn't buy anywhere near as many games as I do, especially from the big 3, because almost all these do scummy stuff.
@get2sammyb That's good, glad they're confident and to be honest, I'm confident enough in what I've seen that I'll pre-order it as soon as Gamestop starts taking them.
Tekken 8 is such an awesome game, actually my favorite of the current gen, so I hope it has a strong hold. Last I looked on the PSN store, it was still among the top 10 in the U.S.
Eve looks awesome. The gameplay needs to be great, though. I'll be the first to admit I love some 'fanservice' but if the gameplay lacks substance, I tune out pretty quickly. It looks good in videos, so I'm hopeful, but can't judge until I get a chance to experience it myself.
Tekken 8 (PS5). That's going to be the game I play the most for quite a while, I enjoy it that much. If I get a chance, I'll also try to complete my first playthrough of Metroid Fusion on Nintendo Switch.
10/10, easily. My favorite Tekken since 5 and one of the best in the series. We'll see how it evolves over time, never know what can change in future updates but as long as Namco doesn't do anything crazy, this could be the best fighting game of the gen, even ahead of Street Fighter 6 which I also really like.
Just downloaded it, will play in the morning when I get home from work. Not really sure what to expect. Seen some good things written about it, seen some bad. It's free so whatever, hope I enjoy it, if not, oh well.
It was ok. Stellar Blade looks awesome (fortunately it doesn't appear Sony's had them censor much, if anything), Sonic x Shadow Generations and Judas were both cool and, though I'm not a fan of the type of game it is, Rise of the Ronin should be very good for people who do enjoy that genre. Everything else was pretty meh, most disappointingly, Silent Hill 2. It is early in development, to be fair, but it still looked rough and frankly, I don't trust Bloober Team at all after the way some people there have been talking.
Well deserved, Tekken 8 is absolutely phenomenal. I've always loved the series but this one is really special. Up there with my other favorite entries, 3 and 5.
Tekken 8 (PS5 version) will be my main focus and maybe some Like a Dragon Gaiden because I do want to get started on Infinite Wealth which I also bought recently. That said, I love Tekken 8's gameplay so much I don't see myself playing any other games during my day off today. It's an absolute blast and everything I wanted T7 to be on day one (became a great game over time but it wasn't very feature rich out of the gate).
'Don't ask me for sh*t!' 😂 On the real, though, while Tifa would be cool, Tekken 8 already has a great roster that's about to get better and the fact is they don't even really have to look outside the series to bring in more cool fighters.
Damn right I'm playing it, it was one of my most-anticipated PS5 games along with Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. From what I've played, lives up to my expectations. Great way to start 2024.
Great review. Got my copy today, had the day off work and spent a decent amount of time playing it. I don't want to be prisoner of the moment so I'll refrain from giving a definitive opinion on the game for now but as a fan of this series, it's delivering.
It's a great game and as somebody who mainly plays single player I enjoy that there are plenty of modes to enjoy and a very enjoyable 'RPG' mode. Only blemish, and unfortunately it's a major one, as I've mentioned before is the DLC practices. Just a terrible direction the fighting game genre as a whole is going.
Even if I believed this rumor and trusted Sony to not make some sweeping changes to certain aspects of the classic God of War games, I still wouldn't be on board. As much as I love those games, I'd rather just see re-releases through PS Plus Premium and the first party teams focus on making new IPs or, if they're going to bring back old ones, go deep into the catalog and revive Syphon Filter and Twisted Metal.
@guardianoftime Welcome to the club. If you haven't gotten around to it, definitely give Astro's Playroom a try. I've had a PS5 since day one and that game is still one of my favorites this gen. If you're a longtime PlayStation fan, I think you'll especially love it with all the cool little Easter Eggs it packs in.
Never would've expected to see Aliens: Dark Descent so high on a Game of the Year list, but that's what I like about all the ones I've seen from the staff here this year. Quite a few surprising placements and lots of variety. Making me think about going back and doing more research on some games that got lost in the shuffle throughout 2023.
@FullMetalWesker
The Fighter Pass is a bit annoying but I could deal with it. I'm more talking about how it's ridiculous that you're only given two costumes for the main characters and outfit 3 to buy for all of them costs about $100. It's beyond ridiculous. This is stuff that used to be, and still should be, unlockable by simply playing the game you paid full price for (more if you got the Deluxe Edition). Koei Tecmo gets criticized for this absolute garbage practice, and rightly so, but for some reason Capcom, Bandai Namco and NetherRealm all get a pass. It's especially annoying in this case because, as we've seen with RE DLC, Capcom does know to do this right, just chooses not to with SF. Still an awesome game, even worthy of being an overall Game of the Year winner, I just wish there wasn't scummy stuff that comes along with it that has to be called out.
SF 6 is an interest choice. As a game itself, it's awesome, really enjoy playing it but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Capcom's DLC practices with this release have been nothing short of putrid at best. How this company can get DLC right with the RE games and not SF is beyond me. I understand it's different teams but still, one respects the people who support the product, the other clearly does not.
Haven't played Baldur's Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2 but I'm not sure either would top Like a Dragon Gaiden for me. I did play FF XVI and Spider-Man 2 as well but didn't care for the story in those at all. LaDG has the typical over the top nonsense I expect from the series, even if this one is shorter, I still enjoyed it all the same.
Nice list, cool to see two Like a Dragon games in there. I have LaD Gaiden as my Game of the Year pick on PS5, and second overall to Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
@rpawlos15133 Releasing these on the PlayStation and Xbox storefronts would make sense. Unfortunately, business execs at Sega rarely do anything that makes sense.
I never owned it, but rented Virtua Fighter 3tb almost every weekend back in the day. One of my favorite Dreamcast games. I'll be spending plenty of time playing it in this.
Leaving out remasters/remakes (otherwise, Resident Evil 4 and Like a Dragon Ishin would definitely be in my top 5): 1. Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name 2. Street Fighter 6 3. Assassin's Creed Mirage 4. Final Fantasy XVI 5. Spider-Man 2
