Nobody who really matters in terms of working on the first game is involved with this and it'll probably be toned down to all heck because 'modern audiences.' It's an easy pass but very annoying to see studios wasting time on remakes/remasters. 2021 was a great year for this gen since then I feel like it's really slowed down. If it wasn't for Insomniac, not sure I'd have gotten a PS5 yet.
@Flaming_Kaiser Exactly. While it does get tiresome seeing so many remakes/remasters, it's at least understandable in the case of RE 2, RE 4, Metroid Prime 1, Dead Space... These are some of the best games of all-time, Lollipop Chainsaw is cool but it doesn't even stand out in its own genre and given the current climate, which is even more hypersensitive than the early-mid 90s were, the game can't even be itself. Seems a waste but whatever, I guess. In every entertainment industry right now, retreading old ground seems to be the 'in' thing.
@Tielo
Sadly I feel like we could say this about a lot of studios that used to have great turn around time on games. Sucker Punch and Rockstar have been putrid of late with their output. In the former's case it's especially disappointing because that's my favorite Sony studio. Like every Sucker Punch game I've played but it takes forever and a day to get a new release from SP since the PS4 era.
I won't hate because eventhough I disagree with a lot of stuff he's said and think he comes off as an arrogant a-hole, he has made a lot of games I really enjoy. Even TLoU II, while the main story was unoriginal, pretentious garbage, I loved exploring the world, the back stories that each building seemed to contain and the gameplay itself, particularly combat, was a huge step up from TLoU 1. It's possibly the best Naughty Dog has ever made just from a pure gameplay perspective. So, while the studio is far from my favorite these days, and I would have zero interest in TLoU 3, if it's a new IP, I'll be intrigued especially after some fairly recent comments Druckmann made. Seems like he could be entertaining stepping out of his comfort zone and that'd be a great thing. Naughty Dog has always been at its best when trying something new.
Terrible but not shocking.. I'll buy expansions that have work put into them or skins if they're reasonably priced but unfortunately a lot of my favorite games that I would consider getting the DLC for have asinine prices. SF 6 is my favorite game of the year so far, but I'm not buying this overpriced nonsense.
@tselliot Yeah, $50 for this or, if somebody has the option, less money for the Xbox 360 version that has One X enhancements and still features online. Seems like an easy choice.
I've always liked the GTA games so I'm interested in how 6 will turn out but given some of the people who've left and some of the idiocy that went on with the GTA trilogy and current gen ports of V, I'm not overly confident I'll enjoy 6 as much as previous games but we'll see.
I don't follow Evo much other than for the announcements of any new DLC or games. Was disappointed we didn't get an official release date yet for Tekken 8, which is easily one of my most anticipated games, but the new character reveals were cool. Also liked the SF 6 DLC announcements and a new Fatal Fury is very good news.
There's always that one game that, even if it has decent hype like this did, surpasses everybody's wildest expectations. It looks like Baldur's Gate 3 will be that release for 2023. And we'll see how this prediction holds up (may age like milk) but I think it will take home the majority of overall Game of the Year awards.
This is the correct perspective. Maybe at one time the term 'JRPG' was used in a mocking manner but that was way back in the early part of the 360 gen, and even then nobody took clowns who said it mockingly serious because most of them fit the 'dude bro' Madden, CoD and GTA only stereotype to a T.
@Khayl I didn't even realize it was turn-based so thanks for that bit of info. Outside of Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Lara Croft Go, I can't say there's too many turn-based games I enjoy, though I won't completely write anything off before learning a lot about it. Looking forward to seeing what you think of the PS5 version of Baldur's Gate 3.
I'm all about developers wilding out in any aspect of a game as long as its given the appropriate age rating and I'm glad that it doesn't seem Sony is interfering and forcing some form of censorship. That said, it also seems like all they're selling is the sex. Obviously that was a part of The Witcher and Cyberpunk, relationships a huge part of Bioware RPGs, so that's all cool. But as much as I enjoy over the top elements (the violence in MK or 360 era Gears of War, what seems like crazy relationship situations in this game), I need substance to back it all up and maybe I've just missed but it doesn't seem there's been much talk about BG 3's gameplay or anything else. Guess I'll have to wait for some reviews before deciding if this will be worth a full price purchase, or, if it's worth one at all.
Awesome, RE 2 is my favorite game of all-time and though I didn't love how they did the second scenarios, overall the remake was a great way to bring a classic back for old and new players. I do appreciate the ability to move and shoot, even back in the PS1/N64 era I didn't care for the tank controls. Great to see it's sold so well. What I'll be interested to see is if RE 4 remake can catch it. 4 is considered by many the best in the series and that remake is doing some great numbers as well.
I better see these games brought back, then. War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron are far, far too good not to be widely available especially this day and age with the tech that we have.
@get2sammyb With the tech available today, it'd be nice to give people options. We can turn off blood or battle damage in certain games, I get this is a smaller studio but surely there has to be a way to make this happen that wouldn't break the bank.
@Nyne11Tyme That, along with pricing, are my major issues with the push for all digital. If I could play the game offline like I could my Xbox 360 digital purchases, I'd be more accepting of this, even if I do prefer physical.
Many of the most successful people don't go much more than 10 or 15 years at one place. Dude more than put in his time. Hope enjoys a bit of time away from the industry with his wife and kids and if he ever does decide to return to gaming I'll be interested to see where he ends up.
Expected Final Fantasy XVI would take it by a considerable margin. And it's deserving, really enjoy what I've played, though there's a few games I'd still have ahead of it, including RE 4 remake.
Great review, answered any questions I would've had. Unfortunately can't justify buying one at that price point but it seems like an awesome piece of hardware.
Enough of the industry consolidation. If Sega was to ever go exclusive again (it won't), I'd rather it be because the company is re-entering the console market on its own.
MS only has itself to blame. It was making shrewd moves during the start of the 360 era and was competing at a very high level. Then it all went south. I can't say for sure it would've been able to do much better in Japan than it did, but should've kept signing exclusive deals with Japanese devs even if it meant having to pay a premium to make up for lost sales that could be gained on PS3. The focus on Kinect never should've happened and Rare and its IP should've been used a lot smarter. Then came Don Mattrick's baby, the Xbox One, no explanation needed after that, still haven't come close to recovering.
I'm a big fan of the Xbox brand, have owned one every generation and I think the more competition, the better, so I want to see Xbox be great again. Series X is a great piece of hardware but its potential is being wasted by incompetent 'leadership' and it's not just Phil Spencer alone, it's the people who could be in line to be his successor as well. Major problem.
Yes, already like it far better than the XIII trilogy and XV. My favorite FF games are the Crisis Core, the VII remake and XII. The last one has the best story but this one comes out of the gate really strong, the gameplay system will probably end up being my favorite, interested if once I get to the end I find the story to be as good as XII.
Downloaded it last night, will get around to playing it soon (want to get through the Syphon Filters first). My third favorite Killzone game after 2 and 3 and I'd have it in my top 20 on PSP, which isn't bad considering PSP had a killer library.
I signed up to the Premium tier in hopes of getting to replay some of my favorite PSP games with the bonus of trophy support on PS5. That has started happening recently with the Syphon Filters and now Killzone Liberation. Happy with that for sure and the Extra lineup has a couple games I didn't play that I may look into now.
Street Fighter 6 on both PS5 and Xbox Series X, once again. Hooked on the game to the point it's the only one I feel like playing right now, though I may try to work in some Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and RE 4 Remake.
Bought it. Figured for as much as I'm playing this game that I'd buy the Fighting Pass and see how the first run goes. Seems pretty cool and being able to earn the Fighter Coins back to roll into the next pass is a nice bonus.
Have to disagree. It was a solid showcase, better than the recent PS5 one, but nothing special and certainly didn't bring enough that Sony has to feel even a slight bit threatened so it can continue to cost along.
I'm really looking forward to this. Like Sonic Frontiers a lot but my favorite Sonic games were always the 2D entries. Hoping Sega is able to recapture that old magic with this release. Don't have to wait too long to find out.
10/10, making a serious run at being my favorite game on both PS5 and Xbox Series X (I double dipped). I mostly play single player and this one is much more packed with stuff to do out of the gate than V was. Enjoying the Arcade mode and extreme battle scenarios in Fighting Ground and World Tour is surprising fun as well. My only complaint would be the music. Some, like Ken's new theme, Kimberly's theme and Manon's are fun to listen to but I don't care for most of the rest, really miss Cammy's and Ryu's old songs. Still, that's a minor issue, it's a fantastic game overall.
