@guardianoftime Welcome to the club. If you haven't gotten around to it, definitely give Astro's Playroom a try. I've had a PS5 since day one and that game is still one of my favorites this gen. If you're a longtime PlayStation fan, I think you'll especially love it with all the cool little Easter Eggs it packs in.
Never would've expected to see Aliens: Dark Descent so high on a Game of the Year list, but that's what I like about all the ones I've seen from the staff here this year. Quite a few surprising placements and lots of variety. Making me think about going back and doing more research on some games that got lost in the shuffle throughout 2023.
@FullMetalWesker
The Fighter Pass is a bit annoying but I could deal with it. I'm more talking about how it's ridiculous that you're only given two costumes for the main characters and outfit 3 to buy for all of them costs about $100. It's beyond ridiculous. This is stuff that used to be, and still should be, unlockable by simply playing the game you paid full price for (more if you got the Deluxe Edition). Koei Tecmo gets criticized for this absolute garbage practice, and rightly so, but for some reason Capcom, Bandai Namco and NetherRealm all get a pass. It's especially annoying in this case because, as we've seen with RE DLC, Capcom does know to do this right, just chooses not to with SF. Still an awesome game, even worthy of being an overall Game of the Year winner, I just wish there wasn't scummy stuff that comes along with it that has to be called out.
SF 6 is an interest choice. As a game itself, it's awesome, really enjoy playing it but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Capcom's DLC practices with this release have been nothing short of putrid at best. How this company can get DLC right with the RE games and not SF is beyond me. I understand it's different teams but still, one respects the people who support the product, the other clearly does not.
Haven't played Baldur's Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2 but I'm not sure either would top Like a Dragon Gaiden for me. I did play FF XVI and Spider-Man 2 as well but didn't care for the story in those at all. LaDG has the typical over the top nonsense I expect from the series, even if this one is shorter, I still enjoyed it all the same.
Nice list, cool to see two Like a Dragon games in there. I have LaD Gaiden as my Game of the Year pick on PS5, and second overall to Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
@rpawlos15133 Releasing these on the PlayStation and Xbox storefronts would make sense. Unfortunately, business execs at Sega rarely do anything that makes sense.
I never owned it, but rented Virtua Fighter 3tb almost every weekend back in the day. One of my favorite Dreamcast games. I'll be spending plenty of time playing it in this.
Leaving out remasters/remakes (otherwise, Resident Evil 4 and Like a Dragon Ishin would definitely be in my top 5): 1. Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name 2. Street Fighter 6 3. Assassin's Creed Mirage 4. Final Fantasy XVI 5. Spider-Man 2
Code Veronica is the only one that needs to be remade (maybe 0, though it's not a necessity). If it's not that, I don't want to hear about more remakes. Focus on RE 9 and finally make Revelations 3.
@Jireland92
Not really much to censor but there could be some subtle tweaks. We'll see. Sony is a bit inconsistent with the stuff it does and doesn't allow. There's some stuff in Like a Dragon Gaiden that I wouldn't expect current Sony to allow on its console.
A few years into the generation, I'm not liking the PS5 as much as I had hoped but even with as disappointed as I am in the console and how critical I can be of Sony at times, only an idiot would say the PS5's success is luck. In the home console space, Sony's biggest 'failure' sold over 85 million units. All other companies that have ever made consoles wish they could've 'failed' like that.
A lot of people on social media were singing the game's praises so I'm not surprised it had Nacon's best ever launch. I was tempted to get it myself but knew it would take a backseat to Like a Dragon Gaiden and then Super Mario RPG so I'm waiting for a sale.
It's crazy that it's been 10 years already, still feels like yesterday when I picked up Killzone Shadow Fall, Assassin's Creed IV and Injustice Ultimate Edition along with my PS4 and set it up for a long night of gaming. Not my favorite PlayStation console but a close third behind 2 and 1 in that order. It was a slow burn but when Ratchet & Clank hit in 2016 it was the start of a nice run until the end of the generation.
My favorite games: 1. Resident Evil 2 remake 2. Yakuza 0 3. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard 4. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided 5. Devil May Cry 5 6. Streets of Rage 4 7. God of War 8. Spider-Man 9. Ratchet & Clank 10. Gravity Rush 2 11. inFamous: Second Son 12. Tekken 7 13. Yakuza 6 14. Horizon Zero Dawn 15. Ghost of Tsushima 16. Resident Evil Revelations 2 17. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy 18. Onee Chanbara Origin 19. Crash Bandicoot 4 20. Soul Calibur 6
When I score games I have in my collection, I just go off fun factor and for me, this one has been a 10/10. It's everything I love about the Like a Dragon series.
Yup. Started it up as soon as I got home from work. Right from the rip, I can tell this game is going to be pretty damn good, but that's not a surprise, this is series is one of the best.
Still annoyed there's no physical version but since this is clearly considered more of a side story and Sega is distributing LaD: Infinite Wealth on disc in the West when it launches next year, I decided to go ahead and pre-order this. I've liked every game in the series and have a few of them among my all-time favorites, expecting good stuff once again.
@Nepp67 I'd trust Capcom more than Konami/Bloober but that's more indictment on the other two than anything else. Capcom does a good job with remakes of its own IPs (even if RE 3 was a bit lazy and rushed) but I wouldn't want to see it bother with other company's games.
Basically 'we saw the reaction and told the devs to take this part out of the game.' The more I learn about this remake, the less I wish it was happening, especially with 'progressive' Western devs, who have zero respect for Japanese games, at the helm.
Already played MGS 4 and Peace Walker on PS3 and PSP but would love to buy them again for PS5 with updated graphics and, possibly, better controls. Those two upgrades with all other content intact, those ports would be sure day-one buys from me.
Just got my copy along with Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Installing the game now. Pretty soon, get to find out for myself if it lives up to the hype. I'm a big fan of 1 and Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
All the acquisitions MS has made since 2018 and the standings are the same. PlayStation and Nintendo vying for the top spot, Xbox in third and I don't even dislike Xbox, in fact I've gamed on Series X about the same as PS5 just calling it as I see it. Sony probably is under some pressure to make a purchase, but I'd rather not see it happen. Bad enough MS plucked Bethesda and Activision.
One of the lower review scores, going by what I've seen on Metacritic. It's never about the number though, I read the reviews here, NL and PX because they're generally fair and give me an idea what to expect. That said, I want to go into this game with as few spoilers as possible so I won't be reading this review now and instead will come back after I complete my first playthrough of Spider-Man 2.
@LightningLeader Completely agree. Whenever I hear remake or, especially, reboot, I get concerned. Saints Row is a prime example of how to do things wrong.
@HeeHo Nothing deep about this game or the characters at all. It's just good, over the top fun with some fan service, and nobody should have a problem with that. Somebody doesn't like it? There's 1 billion other games to play.
Picking it up on Xbox Series X. Reviews are mixed, but they were also mixed for Generations back in 2011 and that's one of my favorite Sonic games ever.
For me it's a 9. Love the return to the old AC gameplay. Story was meh in parts but overall I liked it. Not the best graphics but the gameplay offset that. For a budget release, really well done. Ubisoft is one of the few companies that still does these so hopefully it'll be rewarded with good sales numbers and convince the company to try another AC like this in the future.
