Re: Google Stadia Brings PS Now's First Real Competitor on 19th November

JohnnyBastos

@FullbringIchigo I’m not singling you out (I wouldn’t mess with Tuvok!), but you have laid out the position of a lot people here quite well, so I’d like to address this point: “i just don't like the idea of publishers being in charge of when and how we play our games we are already seeing games and DLC we have paid for getting delisted and losing access to them, that's a product we paid for and as such we should be allowed to use it when we want to not when some soulless, faceless company says we can”.

I would say the ‘product’ we buy these days is a different to the product being sold in the past, and we have to get used to that. We are buying temporary access yes, but there is a reasonable expectation that the access will last for as long as we want it. For sure there is a risk that my ‘paid access’ to a game ends and I don’t have it anymore, but there was also always a risk that my CD-ROM got scratched or a cartridge fell in a cup of tea (it happens!). I think about this a lot in regard to Spotify, as I have a huge physical music collection that I would never want to be cut off from and I find myself buying less these days, but then Spotify also gives me access to music I would never be able to afford. I just now accept that with Spotify I’m buying the opportunity to hear stuff that wasn’t possible before, and if I really do value something for the repeat value then it’s up to me to determine how much I value it and thus what effort I will make to secure its’ future availability.

I dunno, I’m rambling a bit, but I think my TL;DR is that it isn’t a direct comparison between products for streaming and physical media.

So I'm interested to see where Stadia goes. I thought Netflix wasn't for me when it launched, but I was wrong...

Re: E3 2019: Borderlands 3 Gunplay Is Supposed to Be Massively Improved

@Shigurui Shhhhhh, don't question the language moderation. You're absolutely right, but there is zero room for discussion or debate on the matter in the comments. The anti-swearing police have been going overboard for years, treating us like the little children they think they are protecting. Just take the chastisement and move on, you can't win.

Re: EA: 'We're Fully Committed to Making More Star Wars Games'

JohnnyBastos

Oh, I'm sure that statement will really settle investor's minds. Basically just confirmed the article's contents!

When people write "committed to" it's usually because they can't or won't say "will" or "going to". I do it fairly often in my job. It sounds convincing, but leaves a ton of wiggle room.

Re: Japanese Developer Sheds More Light on Sony Censorship Scenario

JohnnyBastos

Total non-issue, you're all getting wound up and righteous about nothing. Censorship? Meh, it's just business. You don't have a right to the artists original creation; the publisher or distributor is deciding what product will be sold, not the studio. Sony don't want to sell pervy crap anymore, get over it.

I should add that I'm a big fan of pervy crap btw. But I don't think Sony's choice over what goes into games it sells is an erosion of anyone's free speech or right to information.

Re: Rockstar Releasing Companion App for Red Dead Redemption 2

JohnnyBastos

I've yet to see a companion app really add value to a game, but I don't mind R* trying and I'll give it a go.

I'm not precious about my HUD though. Immersion is great and all that, but I'm not counting my bullets to know how many are left in the mag, or trying to guess when my dead-eye meter will run out. It is still a game to be enjoyed.

Re: Looks Like Borderlands 2 VR Won't Ship with DLC

JohnnyBastos

Maybe not a bad thing. I tried working through the Handsome Jack Collection (having played BF2 once through before) and couldn't finish it. Was just sick of the gameplay by the time I got to the prequel and the skybox on the Moon was just depressing. The Tiny Tina DLC was awesome though, and Mr Torgue made me chuckle, but the rest was a bit repetitive.

Re: Talking Point: What's the Background Behind Your PSN Username?

JohnnyBastos

Quite an illuminating thread. The readership of PSQ sounds a bit older than I tend to assume.

My name isn't Johnny (it's Dave), but it sounded better as an avatar when combined with Bastos. Bastos is an old French cigarette brand that became an obsession for me and a friend when we lived in Vietnam 15 years ago. They were a cheap cigarette which we didn't smoke, but we liked to think of them as an uber Marlboro Red (any (ex) smokers will get the reference). We kept trying to imagine the most masculine character we could think of and what he would do, when not smoking Bastos cigarettes, or how he would react to whatever situation was in front of us at the time. Bastos has been part of my online monickers ever since.

I spent a lot of time in bars in Vietnam in the OOs.

Re: Red Dead Redemption 2 Characters Will Provide Directions if You Disable Your Mini Map

JohnnyBastos

I'm tempted to switch it off, but if the main map takes more than 1 second to load up (what is it with slow loading maps in games these days??!) then i dunno. I only have a couple of hours a day with the game, I don't want to spend half of that time riding south when I should be heading north. If people want "immersion" (IMO, meh, it's a game, I'm never THAT immersed) then I hope we have to pull out a compass or check the position of the sun.

It all depends how it's implemented I guess. By the sounds of it, R* have thought hard about it. I guess I'll start with it switched off and see how it goes.

Re: Camilla Luddington Unsure If She'll Return as Lara Croft

JohnnyBastos

On topic though, I thought the writing and voice acting was pretty rubbish in the recent games to be honest. She is constantly panting or whining. I'm playing it thinking "will you just shut up for one minute and get on with it stabbing people in the neck". Nothing against the actress, her voice sounded right, but the writing and direction just irritated me throughout.

Re: New Just Cause 4 Trailer Is a Whistle-Stop Tour of Solis

JohnnyBastos

@Kidfried That's a good summation of the games. Worryingly all the promotional material is focusing specially on those individual parts it did so well, whilst not really mentioning the bigger overall experience. Physics engines and graphics only keep me entertained for so long. JC3 was great fun at first (even with the performance issues) but it got boring. Hard to see how JC4 can overcome that. Not sure adding dramatic weather and balloons is going to cut it.

Re: Treyarch Scrapped Single Player Campaign to Focus on 'Social Gameplay Experiences' for Black Ops 4

JohnnyBastos

Focus on "social gameplay experiences" - what a lot of old guff. It's just a focus on making a bigger profit.

And that is absolutely FINE. Go for your lives Activision. It's a private company, not a service provider or an artist. They don't owe us jack. As I was reading in another article on PSQ, there is simply more investment and less return on campaign content than on multiplayer. I accept that.

There is no "spirit of the series" that they must stick with. It's a brand name applied to a game. They happen to have released almost the same game each time previously which built up our expectation, but it's their name to do what they want with. This year they're doubling down on the multiplayer dollars and trying to expand the appeal of that.

I won't be buying this game though, and I bought the previous three. Such is life. I didn't but the first Titanfall, but I did get the second one.
