Two things;
1. They said going in that there wasn't going to be nearly as much combat as the game in order to make the show much more believable before the first episode even aired. We can suspend our disbelief that Joel and Ellie can massacre dozens and dozens of enemies unscathed in a video game but in a tv show with a very grounded tone most people can't suspend their disbelief to that same level.
2. This season is covering the whole first game. I think they can make it work.

HBO's weekly episode model has always been better for them, many of their shows including: Game of Thrones, Westworld, Boardwalk Empire, Euphoria, House of the Dragon, etc. have all remained in the public conscious because of it keeping people talking about them for months on end. Countless streaming shows by comparison have been hurt or even cancelled because everyone watches the whole thing at once and then immediately forget about it for a year or two until the next season drops so they then talk about it for maybe a couple days, rinse and repeat.

Alot of people have quoted how long to beat but I have never found their estimates to be the least bit accurate. They have a tendency to overestimate things. I stick to what the average of people beating games on youtube as the much more accurate estimate and on average most are finishing at around 9-12 hours. Left Behind takes about 90 minutes.

Joel would have still gone through all the trouble because:
1. At the start of the journey he saw Ellie as nothing more than a job.
2. They bonded over the journey to the point Joel couldn't have the heart to tell her it's all likely fruitless since Ellie wanted to attempt a cure (plus maybe he wanted to believe there is a cure deep down despite knowing or at least believing it's all BS)
3. Figured they were just going to do some tests, find nothing worthwhile then release her back to him until learning the operation would kill Ellie.
Plus even if scientists are still desperately trying to find a cure the rest of society could still just know deep down inside that there couldn't be a cure. Not to mention only a few people know of Ellie being immune, so survivors at large wouldn't even have that modicum of hope. Joel taking Ellie away would have been the official final nail in the coffin of any cure, so yes Joel would have figured there is an element of truth to that lie. Therefore I deduce either he knew there's no cure or at the very least was a firm believer there isn't one. But hey that's just a theory. A game theory.

Re: Round Up: The Last of Us TV Reviews Praise a Great Adaptation

The Star Wars films are two and a half hour movies and they still cost at least twice as much as even the most expensive of TV shows. Game of Thrones isn't actually all that CGI intensive other than when dragons are on screen and maybe the White Walkers, even then those shots are used sparingly. West World wasn't that CG heavy either other than the odd scene here and there. It was mostly dialogue heavy human actor interactions especially in the first two seasons. Horizon not only would basically every shot have to be CG to properly convey the world because practical would be logistically impossible, you would also very frequently have several if not in some cases dozens of the things on screen at any one time. It's like doing Rick and Morty in live action, it's a fools errand so just stick to animation. I know people that work as CG animators, CGI is NOT cheap.

@Octane
The amount of post apocalyptic detail and fauna, the scale of everything, the amount of CG required to do that many convincing machines, etc.
It just would be way too expensive to do in live action, especially with regards to TV show length so the only practical way would be animated, which is what the Netflix adaptation will be.

Re: Round Up: The Last of Us TV Reviews Praise a Great Adaptation

@Anthony_Daniels
Last of Us in live action is one thing but doing Horizon in a live action series would just be straight up impossible so it would have to be animated and HBO rarely if ever does animated shows. I think the last notable animated series they did was the Spawn series and that was all the way back in the 90s. So they probably had no choice but to go with Netflix.

As an American who has Hbomax and can luckily watch it in 4K, it really pisses me off that Europeans are just inherently getting an inferior streaming experience just because of where you live. Is it not possible to just access it via VPN?
