Alas,no Captain Haddock or Professor Calculus etc.,then! Tintin games have been few & far between...a rather average 8bit/16bit home computer game & a far better looking but super hard Snes/MD adaptions that were PAL/EU only from what I'd seen on YouTube. Guess time will tell how this turns out.๐ค
If there's areas the PSN Store could be improved it'd be having a Steam style refund system & gifting friends games etc. With no more ps plus cards being sold in bricks & mortar stores it sadly seems like PS Plus sales will only be via online too. For all that,I'm having difficulty seeing how a case exists here...are they saying Sony's 30% cut somehow belongs to consumers? If anyone would have a gripe to sue, wouldn't be the publishers/devs?๐ค (Ala Epic vs Apple?)
Whilst Joymasher's Blazing Chrome certainly didn't take any prisoners as far as emulating the difficulty as well as the visuals of Contra, will certainly be keeping a watch for this too! ๐
The most ridiculous aspect of this "Sony pays to keep games off gamepass!",as pointed out is XB & Nintendo are both as guilty as Sony. Noone batted an eyelid when in between the squabbling over the new Monkey Island visuals is it being a timed Switch exclusive! Octopath Traveller has seen a Switch, then PC/XB gamepass release but despite rumours even on this very site has yet to see a PS port! Likewise Xbox's initial purchase of Zenimax got accolades from XB & certain gaming sites despite the fact that multiformat releases from Bethesda are becoming a thing of the past as various deals & contracts finish up. Nevermind that XB/Microsoft are spending $70 billion for Activision Blizzard & clearly playing the same "we love all gamers" line to convince antitrust authorities but will do the same. Phil "Gamer" Spencer can keep trotting out Minecraft but one merely has to look at more recent actions to see their intent. Heck even Psychonauts 2 was supposedly held back for "additional polish",but also magically saw a Series S/X version get funded after Double Fine's purchase but PS owners got told too bad it wasn't part of the original crowd funding campaign! Yes,XB know how to pull off consumer friendly moves...but this is also the same M$ that likes to force Windows 10/11 users into setting up a Microsoft account just to install & use their OS on pc,(& enable a bunch of snooping by default).
@WCB Must admit, hadn't been aware of his passing...kind of explains why things appear to be a bit more open slather & at the whims of the licensees if enough $$ are thrown around.๐ค @Rob_230 Quite true,Embracer/THQ could have quite the IP arsenal if they chose to go down the streaming path...albeit to date we haven't seen an absolute blockbuster remake/reboot out of all their buy ups to date. Still as others have said,it's not console exclusive nor someone like Tencent...not ideal, but could be worse. Whilst not always a great fan of the Limited Run Games,(& especially Strictly Limited Games, different company,I know),business model, I wonder how it'll affect the indie games scene still getting releases? That said, still remain annoyed at retro games like Night Trap Anniversary (an LRG release),& Wonderboy Anniversary Collection (SLG), not getting wider digital releases!๐
Unfortunately, the PS Deluxe/Premium tier feels like another ps classic mini effort with the minimal amount of resources thrown at it. We can only speculate any in-house Sony team doing conversion work is a small one as there's been zero communication on what games are being worked on or what classic ps1/ps2/psp titles we'd like to see. ๐ค The Jak & Daxter title was rehashed from the defunct PS2 Classics program without any changes,so we're still to see any new ps2 content since that time despite God of War,Ratchet & Clank series, much less the 3rd party games if they created a good emulation. Likewise there's a sizeable amount of ps1 (& psp) games both first party & 3rd party but there doesn't seem to be any particular legacy manager/content managers assigned to it. As a Deluxe Territory the lack of titles on show is disappointing but it makes more sense that the Premium tier was created mostly for a rehashed PS Now streaming service, much like the repurposed ps2 classics. Its a great shame as Sony did offer select legacy games for purchase,(sadly not Tekken 2 or Res Evil unless you got the latter on ps3),unlike Nintendo but it just seems like under Jim Ryan legacy game emulation on ps4/5 is regarded as non profitable so its tossed in the too hard basket & dismissed. ๐
A glance shows most of the ones I'd been interested in are mostly ones I'd already purchased. From a nostalgia perspective I'm curious how the Steve Jackson's Sorcery game is,(loved the books),but can wait for a decent discount. Most of my other wishlisted games are newer releases,or others like some arcade archives ones that have yet to get a discount.
The most frustrating aspect for one of the big seling features the Deluxe/Premium,(Deluxe Territory here),tier "classic games library" promise has been the zero communication/promotion of it. Given the lack of in-house published titles, there doesn't feel like there's a large PS team assigned to converting titles, nor chasing up 3rd party content. There's zero interaction of "Remember these? What ones would you like to see of these ones?" They have resources for a full priced TLOU2 remake, but didn't have time to polish up the Jak & Daxter titles from its original ps4 classics release?๐ค There hasn't been any additional ps2 titles added since the discontinued ps2 classics on ps4 releases, just a rehashed Jak that was already available. No Ratchet,no God of War,nevermind the 3rd parties. And ps1 candidates (like those on the legacy ps3 store),have sadly been few & far between. Not to mention the muted response to a choice of PAL/NTSC versions & not much said since. It just sadly feels like it was thrown together at the last minute without actually adding the development resources to work on producing the quality emulation results & output matching the "Deluxe/Premium" price tag.๐
Xbox: "Sony paying blocking fees to prevent games going to gamepass!"๐ฑ Also Xbox: Has various indies ala Death's Door, Carrion & others that pop up as timed exclusives. Still yet to see a PS Octopath Traveller,(despite Switch, then PC/XB releases),we recent saw Persona 4 remaster have a XBSX version but silence on a ps5 specific version. Not to mention the minor matter of buying up Zenimax & games like Starfield & Elder Scrolls going exclusive the moment the ink dried & deals finalised? (Remember when Bethesda were singing the praises of Dualsense & what they might do with it?). Yes,Sony do engage in 3rd party timed exclusives, but hypocrites much? Or are we getting a ps5 Psychonauts 2,or Hellblade 2?๐ I don't buy their "Activision Blizzard will remain multiplatform",for a second. You don't spend $70 billion & remain as is,no strings attached.
@get2sammyb Not to mention their sister company SLG paywalling extra games content behind their physical edition & locking out everyone else!๐๐คจ Only stumbled across last few days Turrican Anthology Volume 1 & Volume 2 have finally been released on psn. No upgrade path from Turrican Flashback,no surprise-about $48AU each.
Whether the same ever happens with their Wonderboy Anniversary Collection, lord knows!๐
Imagine taking the positive feedback from the pirate/sailing aspect of AC4,(wasn't it crossgen on ps3/ps4 too?),then rather than making a narrative pirate adventure & perhaps include some online bits to supplement the main game, they just saw the $$ of live services like GTA Online instead!๐ But this is also the same Ubisoft that abandoned the original Beyond Good & Evil 2 on ps3/360 continuing the search for Pey'j in favour of an MMO type thing! For all the GTA VI rumours,I'll be surprised if there's still an offline single player adventure given Take Two's live service greed! Its sad how most AAA publishers have abandoned single player by & large in the pursuit of live service plunder instead!
@Would_you_kindly Much like how God of War 1 & 2,Ratchet & Clank ps2 series, Sly Raccoon ps2 games or Twisted Metal ps1 games would've been obvious in-house options to add to PS Deluxe/Premium,nevermind 3rd party games!
@get2sammyb Weird thing about the entire "Classics" program thus far is the lack of hype &/or any communication about it. There's no point of contact like "what games would you like to see?". Really doesn't help the perception the program was more an afterthought for Deluxe territories that didn't have access to ps now streaming & justify charging for a 3rd tier.๐ค
Like most announcements out of the current Playstation HQ,the idea sounds promising but like eg: PS Plus Deluxe/Premium having a "library of classic psp/ps1/ps2 classic games",or the ps4 to ps5 first party game upgrades fee,it'll be the devil in the details.๐ค Everyone sees "free psn credits",but I can't see that being easily given away unless its directed towards say grinding away in Destiny 2,Fortnite,GTA Online or Last of Us Factions,(or whatever the online game ND are doing is called),rather than a smaller scale single player indie title.๐ค Like a casino, they want you to keep playing & paying, like any business. Anyway its somewhat different,so let's just see how it unfolds.
In my neck of the woods where PS Deluxe is $155 vs $80 for Essential, the promised legacy psp/ps1/ps2 titles are proving to be few & far between thus far.๐ค Yes,it does take time to add features like rewind etc., but it does feel like the "classic titles" feature was thrown together at the last minute esp.for territories that don't have access to ps now streaming. That they haven't really added to the ps2 games is a great disappointment, whilst 3rd parties like the Maximo series,Splinter Cell trilogy, Beyond Good & evil would be great,or NFS Underground 2, the SSX series,Burnout,Midnight Club,Gta LCS/VCS if they could pay the licenses...but to not add in-house efforts like the Ratchet and Clank ps2 series or Sly Raccoon is baffling!๐ Likewise the suikoden ps1 games, early FF games, Breath of Fire series ,Alundra, Tomba, Adventures of Lomax,Colony Wars,Rayman & more just makes it feel like a cheap ps1 classic type effort deja vu! Easy for Mr Ryan to claim retro titles aren't popular when you don't put the effort in to support it. Where's the communication "what retro games would you like to see?"
Seems sad despite advertising supposedly having a library of psp/ps1/ps2 classics available for PS Deluxe/Premium, they seemed determined to not use the ps2 emulation. Given ps now still has limited territories & ps2 emulation would allow local download over streaming,it's disappointing how few classics they've added to date vs streaming (unavailable to ps deluxe territories).๐
There better be trophies for seat-stealing the moment you get up &/or jumping on your stomach to wake your hooman assistant up if they're asleep & unresponsive to initial demands for food!!๐ฑ๐๐ผ
@Grimwood Been a while since I last fired up Until Dawn,(have Man of Medan & Little Hope on my backlog, will likely look at House of Ashes if/when it hits 50%off on a psn sale),bit agree the quick time events used there,(& Quantic Dreams with Heavy Rain,Detroit etc.),could throw up extra scenarios. Eg: Mike taking a few missteps affecting Jessica in Until Dawn,or Emily in her escape from down below etc. Hadn't gotten The Quarry yet,so that's disappointing to hear if that sort of random element has been removed, but guess I'll pick it up when the bills allow for it.
A disturbing development but not entirely without precedent regarding the gaming side of things. Didn't Konami effectively have PT yanked off the psn so if anyone that'd played it but deleted it couldn't redownload it?๐ค
Also think Take-two/Rockstar snuck out a patch for ps3 GTA IV which removed several songs from the play list even if you'd owned it on disc after they didn't bother renewing musical licenses?
Reminds me of the visuals of the original Suikoden that enchanted me on ps1 & yet combine them with some of the spectacular mega boss battles of FF7 like Ruby,Emerald Weapons etc.,where you'd think how the fudge am I supposed to beat,THAT?! Let's hope the gameplay matches the gorgeous looking visuals!๐ค๐
@Rob_230 Yep,that was the one! Also a lovely surprise a week or so from launch finding out the PAL/EU models went from full hardware ps2 compatibility to a hybrid software/hw one! ๐คฏCan laugh now,but ended being a day 1 ps3 slim owner...still working & my last working link for the PS3 RDR/Undead Nightmare,God of War 1 & 2 HD, Suikoden 1 & 2,Blood Omen Legacy of Kain & others! ๐ Agreed, feel like you need to read the fine print when it comes to a lot of the announcements these days. Current management seem to be taking a very Nintendo like attitude & expecting the hardcore will buy regardless....there's definite room for improvement. ๐ค
@Rob_230 That's pretty stiff/rotten luck...reminds me of when my launch model ps3,($1000 down under),packed it in after 14/15 months & didn't have the consumer protection laws we have down under now!). With my old pc being a bit iffy, had to sink $$ towards a new one rather than a ps5 Even putting aside the availability issues, given Jim Ryan's penny pinching upgrades, lacklustre attitude towards legacy games access,& focus on eg $125 Last of Us ps5 remaster & more live service games vs mid range price points during the ps4 era like for the ps4 Last of Us remaster,& ps4 Ratchet & Clank etc.,his leadership at a time when competition is a lot tighter comes across as increasingly tone deaf & reactive rather than proactive.๐ค
@sanderson72 As I mentioned in my original post, no ps now/ps3 streaming in my neck of the woods so we only have the relatively small catalogue of ps1/psp/ps2 titles they're slowly,(& randomly, agreed!),adding. Would've thought the original ps2 Ratchet & Clank games had been a certainty! (Not saying the ps3 ones weren't good too,but just having that option of a local download & play). Used to play Pacific Rift on a buddy's ps3, good times. Not to mention its the only means as a PS Owner to properly own/play RDR/Undead Nightmare without it being a short term streaming rental! I'll be sad the day my ps3 no longer works, just like my PS2,where I can enjoy the Maximo games & all the old GTA games with their full soundtracks unlike the gimped "classic" ones or the cheap effort "definitive edition remaster".
Curious they didn't port the psp version then! As far as I recall this never came out on the original short lived ps2 classics on ps4 range! If so,this stealth release of it onto PS Deluxe,(no premium in my region),would be the first "new" ps2 classic port that wasn't part of the original ps4 line-up. ๐ค My biggest annoyance is just how random/quiet Sony is being about future retro releases! Sly Raccoon series,Ratchet & Clank,GOW 1 & 2, Capcom's Maximo series, much less some of EA PS2 back catalogue like the SSX games,or other 3rd parties like GTA LCS/VCS, Midnight Club,NFS, Splinter Cell Trilogy etc....nevermind ps1 classics ala Suikoden 1 & 2 & many more! I'm almost surprised Sony aren't selling them in a PSN Brown paper bag!๐
There was nothing wrong with doing remasters of GYA IV & RDR,(& RDR Nightmare too). The problem with GTA "Definitive Edition",was Take-Two offloading it to the decidedly amateur hour Grove Street Games & demanding a rush job & being too tight fisted on renewing the music licenses....after that embarrasing effort they need to rename themselves "the Ballers did it again" crew!๐ Could've been a great opportunity for Sony to have engaged Bluepoint Games & secure a new gen remaster of RDR/Undead Nightmare as a PS5/PC timed exclusive given XB already has a playable version available to its users. It sucks that PS owners are locked out of both games with streaming the only option in select territories. Unfortunately splashing the exclusives cash on GTA Online & RDR Online items (& maybe GTA 6 for all we know),was far too tempting to chase the live services $$!๐
@Kang81 Think it mightโve been Tim Sweeney himself that confirmed though the footage/code is real, it was never intended as a full Gears of War release. At the time with the 360 sales outstripping PS3's slow start, most 3rd party games led development on XB 360 with PS3 getting so-so ports. In the case of Gears of War,the Unreal Engine had been optimised for XB 360,& Epic simply used Gears of War as a technical demo to get the engine running on ps3 apparently. Obviously these days with Sony's "strategic" minor shares in Epic they've made sure the Unreal engine is running the likes of Fortnite etc.,a lot more smoothly on current gens.
Given Sony haven't adapted any "new" titles to the ps2 emulator for PS Deluxe/Premium,eg: Sly Raccoon,Ratchet & Clank series,GOW 1 & 2,it would seem a stretch they'd be recompiling ps3 games to make them playable on ps5.๐ค As it is there's been only a handful of ps1 games adapted too,& they haven't very forthcoming on further ones to come! Don't get me wrong,I'd love to see more of an effort to access the vast back catalogue...but given Mr Ryan's priorities seem to be directed towards live service games expansion,I just can't see them doing so sadly.๐
Serms like my opinion re Nightdive's "enhanced edition" Blade Runner port ruffled some feathers!๐ณ
Time will tell shortly if this revamped XIII is any good ,agreed. Has Microids response been speedy? Not exactly....but if they've built a "new" port from the ground up,then it'll hopefully live up to things.
As for Nightdive Studios...they rode in on the back of work of PC modders painstakingly getting the original Blade Runner playable under ScummVM (& GOG getting the rights to sell it),with promises of an enhanced edition also available on consoles.
Their version had been heavily delayed with the admission of what the modders already found namely no Westwood source code/assets appear to exist. Furthermore with ScummVM being an open sourced project it would mean a console port being a non-starter.
In using their own in-house engine, they've produced a buggier version than was already available & forced that version to be removed from sale. Rather than delay their console ports, they still put this buggy version out anyway.
That their only acknowledgement to date has been to bunker down in silence & bundle (on PC), the ScummVM modded version which they had nothing to do with & had removed for their "enhanced edition" & still keeping the buggy console ports on sale says it all what a shambolic effort its been.
@Balosi Would love to see Alundra make a return though it quietly delisted without warning off the EU/AU psn sometime ago ahead of the aborted closure of the legacy psn stores. There's other in-house ps1 titles like Adventures of Lomax,& the Colony Wars,& Twisted Metal series you would think Sony could/should be able to add, but sadly they're just operating on radio silence rather than show a commitment to a true classics library. I agree,I'd love to see Suikoden, but second guessing Konami is tricky at the best of times...they'd be more likely to release NFT's of them than the games!๐
@LiamCroft Now if only Nightdive Studios were taking notes & bother addressing their mess of a Blade Runner "Enhanced Edition" that has more bugs than the ScummVM version that PC modders painstakingly restored & was on GOG 'til Nightdive unleashed their mess of a conversion! (And somehow went from an M Rated game when released back in the day to being banned/Refused Classification here in Australia courtesy of Nightdive's PS4/XB versions!)
@KidBoruto Understandable! I'm far removed from being a PC Master race gamer vs Sony as you'd get! But use mine mostly for the classics,(using ScummVM),& some of the oldies that pop up on GOG,& emulation of other oldies & the odd indie that doesn't come to PS or ever gets a sale on psn. Does sadden me that Sony's ps1/ps2 emulation efforts have gotten progressively more lacklustre even with the revamped ps plus...they just don't want to put in more than a minimal effort as its not deemed profitable vs live services.
@KidBoruto The Monkey Island 1 & 2 Special Editions were never ported to later gen ps4/XB/SW. Given Disney shuttered Lucasfilm as a developer, not sure if any 3rd party publishers would see enough profit porting them & paying Disney the licensing fees more's the pity!๐ They show up on sale on GOG & Steam from time to time & old PC'S like I had until recently ran it fine so probably a cheaper bet vs streaming it.
Wish Suikoden 1 & 2 would be a part of the ps1 classics coming over to ps4/5...though at this point we don't even know if they're extending the range given the only additional title since launch has been RE Director's Cut,& psp Super Stardust?๐ค There's so many jrpg's alone that'd be worthwhile additions much less other ps1/ps2 games. But again,Sony have been so uncommunicative we just don't know if their "classics" range will just remain ps3/now streaming titles not accessible to most countries!
Unfortunately the developer has form for this as Thimbleweed Park was also a timed exclusive, (Xbone in that case)....but had hoped this being Monkey Island & Devolver Digital publishing it'd be multformat day 1! Sigh! ๐
@JamieO Great (extra),summing up & much as I suspected....Ratalaika aren't a diabolically bad dev as far as these retro conversions go...but compared to others mentioned they just do perfunctory ones rather than giving options that dazzle.๐ค I would say normally I'd wait for a sale (esp.as Wonderboy was only ever available on Japan's Arcade Archives or the horrid Wonderboy Returns). But I really don't want to support their selling a gimped version when they could sell the Anniversary version down the line if they bother listening to the feedback!
In itself not a great surprise nor any different to when you'd be locked out of ps plus freebies if you let your subscription lspse. Albeit more recent PS Plus releases give you a plus version & a separate sku to buy on psn if you liked/ preferred to buy it outright.
@JamieO Must admit haven't seen many reviews even mentioning the rewind/gameplay features given the whole saga of the limited retail/ digital version differences! I'm no Sega expert but screenshots of Wonderboy & Wonderboy in Monster Land on Master system (& I think Game Gear for Wonderboy?),looked pretty good for the era. ๐ Just find it sad that rather than listen to the feedback & do something about making Anniversary collection available to all they've just buried their heads & hope all the bad will they've created get forgotten about!
@JamieO Yep,gets even messier down the rabbit hole of the Adventure Island rehashes on Nintendo & PC Engine! But agree the SLG compilation is by far more comprehensive...& that's minus the excellent Lizardcube WB Dragon's Trap & Game Atelier's Monster Boy Cursed Kingdom! Just never seen such a paywalled effort of denying content to push a "limited physical" version. (Might sound anti physical & that's far from true.)
As pretty as the RE 1 Remake was, never liked the Crimson zombie concept nor it missing the ability to "clear" areas like you could in classic vanilla Resident Evil with the extra ammo of the easier game mode. The static backdrops & not knowing what was around the corner really hit home the tension!๐ Just a pity the only way to buy it on ps4/5 outside of Deluxe/Premium is paying $23AU for the triple pack on ps3 but currently have no access to RE2/RE3 Classic games!๐
Although obviously not a ps1 ported game, its easy to forget the ps1 had some gorgeous 2d games that'd be right at home on PS Classics in the retro range of PS Deluxe if Sony could be bothered. Suikoden 1 & 2,Alundra, In the Hunt, Blood Omen Legacy of Kain, Adventures of Lomax, Discworld, Broken Sword 1 & 2 & others! Like has been noted, some extra control schemes are a definite miss here, but I suspect this will be a must have/wishlisted item if not necessarily a day 1.๐
Oh,& another example of what Jamie mentioned, the Digital Eclipse TMNT Cowabunga Collection. They were at great pains to say there'll be no difference in physical/Digital content...heck when they were able to gain the rights to Jungle Book & Snes Aladdin they were able to add a dlc upgrade option to those buyers of the Aladdin/Lion King compilation! And they added Lost Vikings 2 for Free in the Blizzard retro Collection! That's how you look after your customers,SLG!
Another spot on retro review from Jamie O'Neil!๐
Here I thought when my mates would laugh at my Wonder Boy arcade misfortune when they could cruise thru on the skateboard!๐๐ฑ
Like G'n'G the cartoon visuals had me hooked even down to the dreaded Grim Reaper!
That said,I was bitterly divided the moment I heard about the Wonderboy Anniversary Collection vs the digital ININ Collection sold here.
Did I want the extra games of the Anniversary SLG Collection, absolutely! But did I want to pay the "rest of the world" postage charges SLG (Or Limited Run Games),charge for international postage? (And wait months),no.
Moreso,do I want to support the dodgy practices of SLG that paywall extra games behind their limited 2000 copies & no other ps4/5 owners can play? No. It's just a pathetic excuse to justify their so called price gouging physical "preservation" of games.
We've yet to see the light of day Turrican Anthology Volume 2's extra games,(& just a vague promise of "something" for PSN buyers when Factor 5 finally finish that).
Asha in Monster World Remastered SLG version actually included this Megadrive ported game now retooled into the Anniversary/ININ Wonderboy Collections!
@get2sammyb might be worth privately chatting to some indie devs & seeing what certification requires as it seems bizarre SLG have no compulsion to release their Collection digitally later long after the physical one has sold out? You think they'd want the extra sales!๐ค๐
Only seems to benefit the scalpers as it stands.
@__jamiie Thought I recalled of something along those lines...it's a P.R. friendly way to get your customers excited about the classics program & feel part of it...sadly a concept that falls on deaf ears with the current management!
If you're one of the formerly ps now territories with access to ps3 streamed games, great. IF you're part of the Deluxe regions with no streaming, that retro games list is substantially less for the $75 extra in my region!๐ค Still not sure if we'll see much of a boost to the ps1/psp & super disappointing number of ps2 titles that are on offer thus far....those ps3 server blades aren't going to last forever!
A step in the right direction.๐ Still wonder how we'll get on with future releases. If they're open to more ntsc releases we might get some of the U.S. only jrpg releases. Just wish there was somewhere PS owners could vote on some nominations or something as far as games go!
Given ex-Stardew publisher Chucklefish's recent disdain towards Playstation owners means there'll ever be a PS Witchbrook alongside undoubted Switch/other consoles, this might be the closest there'll be to getting a similar game.
Can see Resident Evil dual shock & Tekken 2 as PSN AU new releases but like the U.S. roll-out only available by ps plus deluxe subscription. Looking at mostly $15 pricing for the other ps1/psp games...I'm assuming the Jak & Daxter series have retained their ps4 classic price point.๐ค Whilst Deluxe might look a good price on paper, the lack of a big non streaming catalogue of classics thus far really isn't an advertisement to upgrade! Since the initial Asian launch what has been added? RE Dual shock,& Super Stardust? No Konami games like Suikoden 1 & 2? No Dino Crisis 1 & 2,no Alundra, Legend of Dragoon,,FF1,2,4-6 Breath of Fire or other JRPG's? Adventure of Lomax, Tomba series? No Maximo's or indeed ANY ps2 titles beyond Jak & Daxter? There's just been silence rather than hyping up what they might be bringing,no "we're working on ntsc/ pal choices if you want them"....it just feels like another low budget Jim Ryan effort that reads promising until you see the fine print/actual results.
Feels like a lifetime ago when finally confirming the upper tiers & the possibilities when confirming retro game support from ps1/ps2/psp eras being especially interesting given the lack of ps3/now streaming down under. Unfortunately since the initial Asian launch all we've seen is what,Resident Evil PS1 get added?๐ค Rather than the promise of hundreds of titles, we've seen a literal handful from the ps1 classics from the ps3 store,& certainly zero "new" classics that never got a digital release. On PS2 games, its feels worse...they've seemingly not only repurposed the so-so ps2 classics on ps4 emulation, but seemingly haven't made any compatibility improvements so they've only dared offered the Jak Collection for ps4/5 owners & well short of what was a short list on ps4 already!๐ค It just felt like a rushed idea, chucked in at the last minute & much like the ps1 classic console, if it "fails to get enough engagement",will be used by Jim Ryan to justify his stance. The reality is,if you want to push a premium product don't rehash older failed ideas,& resource a dedicated in-house retro team, but why do that when live service games are in the offing & a full price remaster on TLOU ps5,right Jim?
Given for years one could be fairly confident,(& pickup),some discounted PS Plus subscriptions during previous Days of Play/Black Friday sales from Bricks & Mortar retailers to potentially being forced to solely buy them via the store psn would suck bigtime. ๐ค Used to circumvent the need for having a credit card attached to the account as it would want otherwise & you were "stacking". That they didn't foresee or decide on a definitive stacking restriction prior to the reveal of the new tiers suggests a management that doesn't use their own products! ๐ค Much like despite the tease of a large library of retro games for the Permium/Deluxe tier,it feels like most are tied into the streaming only former ps now & those of us in Deluxe regions are getting only a token few "classic" ps1/ps2/psp titles, that make older abandoned efforts like the ps2 on ps4 range seem coordinated in comparison!๐
Stumbled onto this via my YouTube feed, but easily the most asked question was about bugs/ improvements. ๐ Saw handful of replies there & on twitter it has,but didn't get a huge amount of reviews much less follow up...the most prominent one on PS being PS Universe. Apparently the "assist" mode is a big positive to the distinct lack of directions in the original game's quests....this all ahead of an intended physical release so can't be planning many more patches if so. Though looks like a leap of faith & liking Zelda like action,so bit of a leap of faith.๐ค
This is the same Bitmap Bureau that made the rather nice Smash TV style Xeno Crisis,(& chipped in with programming duties on Battle Axe),so happy enough with a team that knows their niche & audience & keeps to their strengths.๐ Good time if you're a horizontal scroller beat-em-up fan,if painful on the wallet!

Re: Sony Sued ยฃ5 Billion for 'Ripping Off' PS5, PS4 Players
If there's areas the PSN Store could be improved it'd be having a Steam style refund system & gifting friends games etc.
With no more ps plus cards being sold in bricks & mortar stores it sadly seems like PS Plus sales will only be via online too.
For all that,I'm having difficulty seeing how a case exists here...are they saying Sony's 30% cut somehow belongs to consumers? If anyone would have a gripe to sue, wouldn't be the publishers/devs?๐ค (Ala Epic vs Apple?)

Re: Devolver Debunks Ludicrous Rumour Claiming Sony Paid to Keep Cult of the Lamb Off Xbox Game Pass
Re: Embracer Group Buys The Lord of the Rings IP, Maneater Dev, Limited Run, and More
@WCB Must admit, hadn't been aware of his passing...kind of explains why things appear to be a bit more open slather & at the whims of the licensees if enough $$ are thrown around.๐ค
@Rob_230 Quite true,Embracer/THQ could have quite the IP arsenal if they chose to go down the streaming path...albeit to date we haven't seen an absolute blockbuster remake/reboot out of all their buy ups to date.
Re: Poll: Is PS Plus Premium Good Enough?
Unfortunately, the PS Deluxe/Premium tier feels like another ps classic mini effort with the minimal amount of resources thrown at it.
We can only speculate any in-house Sony team doing conversion work is a small one as there's been zero communication on what games are being worked on or what classic ps1/ps2/psp titles we'd like to see. ๐ค
The Jak & Daxter title was rehashed from the defunct PS2 Classics program without any changes,so we're still to see any new ps2 content since that time despite God of War,Ratchet & Clank series, much less the 3rd party games if they created a good emulation.
Re: 400+ PS5, PS4 Games Going Cheap in New PS Store Sale
A glance shows most of the ones I'd been interested in are mostly ones I'd already purchased.
From a nostalgia perspective I'm curious how the Steve Jackson's Sorcery game is,(loved the books),but can wait for a decent discount.
Most of my other wishlisted games are newer releases,or others like some arcade archives ones that have yet to get a discount.
Re: PS Plus Premium, Deluxe Officially Adds No New Games in August
The most frustrating aspect for one of the big seling features the Deluxe/Premium,(Deluxe Territory here),tier "classic games library" promise has been the zero communication/promotion of it.
Given the lack of in-house published titles, there doesn't feel like there's a large PS team assigned to converting titles, nor chasing up 3rd party content.
There's zero interaction of "Remember these? What ones would you like to see of these ones?"
They have resources for a full priced TLOU2 remake, but didn't have time to polish up the Jak & Daxter titles from its original ps4 classics release?๐ค
There hasn't been any additional ps2 titles added since the discontinued ps2 classics on ps4 releases, just a rehashed Jak that was already available.
Re: Microsoft Accuses Sony of Paying to Block Games from Xbox Game Pass
Xbox: "Sony paying blocking fees to prevent games going to gamepass!"๐ฑ
Also Xbox: Has various indies ala Death's Door, Carrion & others that pop up as timed exclusives.
Or are we getting a ps5 Psychonauts 2,or Hellblade 2?๐
I don't buy their "Activision Blizzard will remain multiplatform",for a second. You don't spend $70 billion & remain as is,no strings attached.
Re: TAITO Titans Blasting Overseas in Ray'z Arcade Chronology for PS4
@get2sammyb Not to mention their sister company SLG paywalling extra games content behind their physical edition & locking out everyone else!๐๐คจ
Only stumbled across last few days Turrican Anthology Volume 1 & Volume 2 have finally been released on psn. No upgrade path from Turrican Flashback,no surprise-about $48AU each.
Whether the same ever happens with their Wonderboy Anniversary Collection, lord knows!๐
Re: Swashbuckling Pirate Sim Skull & Bones Is 'Not a Narrative-Driven Game'
Imagine taking the positive feedback from the pirate/sailing aspect of AC4,(wasn't it crossgen on ps3/ps4 too?),then rather than making a narrative pirate adventure & perhaps include some online bits to supplement the main game, they just saw the $$ of live services like GTA Online instead!๐
But this is also the same Ubisoft that abandoned the original Beyond Good & Evil 2 on ps3/360 continuing the search for Pey'j in favour of an MMO type thing!
For all the GTA VI rumours,I'll be surprised if there's still an offline single player adventure given Take Two's live service greed! Its sad how most AAA publishers have abandoned single player by & large in the pursuit of live service plunder instead!
Re: Bonus PSP Game Added to PS Plus Premium Lineup for July 2022
Re: Poll: What PS Stars Rewards Do You Want?
Like most announcements out of the current Playstation HQ,the idea sounds promising but like eg: PS Plus Deluxe/Premium having a "library of classic psp/ps1/ps2 classic games",or the ps4 to ps5 first party game upgrades fee,it'll be the devil in the details.๐ค
Everyone sees "free psn credits",but I can't see that being easily given away unless its directed towards say grinding away in Destiny 2,Fortnite,GTA Online or Last of Us Factions,(or whatever the online game ND are doing is called),rather than a smaller scale single player indie title.๐ค Like a casino, they want you to keep playing & paying, like any business.
Anyway its somewhat different,so let's just see how it unfolds.
Re: Reaction: We Need to Talk About PS Plus Premium
In my neck of the woods where PS Deluxe is $155 vs $80 for Essential, the promised legacy psp/ps1/ps2 titles are proving to be few & far between thus far.๐ค
Yes,it does take time to add features like rewind etc., but it does feel like the "classic titles" feature was thrown together at the last minute esp.for territories that don't have access to ps now streaming.
That they haven't really added to the ps2 games is a great disappointment, whilst 3rd parties like the Maximo series,Splinter Cell trilogy, Beyond Good & evil would be great,or NFS Underground 2, the SSX series,Burnout,Midnight Club,Gta LCS/VCS if they could pay the licenses...but to not add in-house efforts like the Ratchet and Clank ps2 series or Sly Raccoon is baffling!๐
Likewise the suikoden ps1 games, early FF games, Breath of Fire series ,Alundra, Tomba, Adventures of Lomax,Colony Wars,Rayman & more just makes it feel like a cheap ps1 classic type effort deja vu!
Easy for Mr Ryan to claim retro titles aren't popular when you don't put the effort in to support it.
Where's the communication "what retro games would you like to see?"
Re: Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 Seemingly Return to PS Store Soon
Seems sad despite advertising supposedly having a library of psp/ps1/ps2 classics available for PS Deluxe/Premium, they seemed determined to not use the ps2 emulation. Given ps now still has limited territories & ps2 emulation would allow local download over streaming,it's disappointing how few classics they've added to date vs streaming (unavailable to ps deluxe territories).๐

Re: The Devil in Me Is Classic Hotel Horror, Out for PS5, PS4 This Year
@Grimwood Been a while since I last fired up Until Dawn,(have Man of Medan & Little Hope on my backlog, will likely look at House of Ashes if/when it hits 50%off on a psn sale),bit agree the quick time events used there,(& Quantic Dreams with Heavy Rain,Detroit etc.),could throw up extra scenarios.
Re: Sony Removing Some Purchased Films, Movies from Users' Accounts
A disturbing development but not entirely without precedent regarding the gaming side of things. Didn't Konami effectively have PT yanked off the psn so if anyone that'd played it but deleted it couldn't redownload it?๐ค
Also think Take-two/Rockstar snuck out a patch for ps3 GTA IV which removed several songs from the play list even if you'd owned it on disc after they didn't bother renewing musical licenses?
Re: Retro RPG Sea of Stars Officially Confirmed for PS5, PS4
Reminds me of the visuals of the original Suikoden that enchanted me on ps1 & yet combine them with some of the spectacular mega boss battles of FF7 like Ruby,Emerald Weapons etc.,where you'd think how the fudge am I supposed to beat,THAT?!
Let's hope the gameplay matches the gorgeous looking visuals!๐ค๐
Re: Gaming Spend Will Continue to Decline in US as Living Costs Increase, Says NPD Report
Agreed, feel like you need to read the fine print when it comes to a lot of the announcements these days. Current management seem to be taking a very Nintendo like attitude & expecting the hardcore will buy regardless....there's definite room for improvement. ๐ค
Re: Gaming Spend Will Continue to Decline in US as Living Costs Increase, Says NPD Report
@Rob_230 That's pretty stiff/rotten luck...reminds me of when my launch model ps3,($1000 down under),packed it in after 14/15 months & didn't have the consumer protection laws we have down under now!). With my old pc being a bit iffy, had to sink $$ towards a new one rather than a ps5
Even putting aside the availability issues, given Jim Ryan's penny pinching upgrades, lacklustre attitude towards legacy games access,& focus on eg $125 Last of Us ps5 remaster & more live service games vs mid range price points during the ps4 era like for the ps4 Last of Us remaster,& ps4 Ratchet & Clank etc.,his leadership at a time when competition is a lot tighter comes across as increasingly tone deaf & reactive rather than proactive.๐ค
Re: Hot Shots Tennis (PS2) - Bare Bones and Bettered By Its PSP Successor
Re: Hot Shots Tennis (PS2) - Bare Bones and Bettered By Its PSP Successor
Curious they didn't port the psp version then! As far as I recall this never came out on the original short lived ps2 classics on ps4 range! If so,this stealth release of it onto PS Deluxe,(no premium in my region),would be the first "new" ps2 classic port that wasn't part of the original ps4 line-up. ๐ค
My biggest annoyance is just how random/quiet Sony is being about future retro releases!
Re: GTA 6 Is Rockstar's Focus as Red Dead Redemption, GTA 4 Remasters Reportedly Shelved
There was nothing wrong with doing remasters of GYA IV & RDR,(& RDR Nightmare too). The problem with GTA "Definitive Edition",was Take-Two offloading it to the decidedly amateur hour Grove Street Games & demanding a rush job & being too tight fisted on renewing the music licenses....after that embarrasing effort they need to rename themselves "the Ballers did it again" crew!๐
Could've been a great opportunity for Sony to have engaged Bluepoint Games & secure a new gen remaster of RDR/Undead Nightmare as a PS5/PC timed exclusive given XB already has a playable version available to its users. It sucks that PS owners are locked out of both games with streaming the only option in select territories.
Unfortunately splashing the exclusives cash on GTA Online & RDR Online items (& maybe GTA 6 for all we know),was far too tempting to chase the live services $$!๐
Re: This Is the Closest You'll Ever Get to a PS3 Devkit
Re: Sony Appears to be Interested in Adapting Previous-Gen Peripherals for Modern Consoles, According to Patent
Given Sony haven't adapted any "new" titles to the ps2 emulator for PS Deluxe/Premium,eg: Sly Raccoon,Ratchet & Clank series,GOW 1 & 2,it would seem a stretch they'd be recompiling ps3 games to make them playable on ps5.๐ค
As it is there's been only a handful of ps1 games adapted too,& they haven't very forthcoming on further ones to come!
Don't get me wrong,I'd love to see more of an effort to access the vast back catalogue...but given Mr Ryan's priorities seem to be directed towards live service games expansion,I just can't see them doing so sadly.๐
Re: The Abysmal XIII Remake Gets a Huge Overhaul in September
Re: Wild Arms (PS1) - Distinctly 90s JRPG Still Sparks the Spirit of Adventure
Re: The Abysmal XIII Remake Gets a Huge Overhaul in September
@LiamCroft Now if only Nightdive Studios were taking notes & bother addressing their mess of a Blade Runner "Enhanced Edition" that has more bugs than the ScummVM version that PC modders painstakingly restored & was on GOG 'til Nightdive unleashed their mess of a conversion! (And somehow went from an M Rated game when released back in the day to being banned/Refused Classification here in Australia courtesy of Nightdive's PS4/XB versions!)
Re: Return to Monkey Island with a New Look, But Not on PS5, PS4 Just Yet
@KidBoruto Understandable! I'm far removed from being a PC Master race gamer vs Sony as you'd get! But use mine mostly for the classics,(using ScummVM),& some of the oldies that pop up on GOG,& emulation of other oldies & the odd indie that doesn't come to PS or ever gets a sale on psn.
Does sadden me that Sony's ps1/ps2 emulation efforts have gotten progressively more lacklustre even with the revamped ps plus...they just don't want to put in more than a minimal effort as its not deemed profitable vs live services.
Re: Return to Monkey Island with a New Look, But Not on PS5, PS4 Just Yet
@KidBoruto The Monkey Island 1 & 2 Special Editions were never ported to later gen ps4/XB/SW. Given Disney shuttered Lucasfilm as a developer, not sure if any 3rd party publishers would see enough profit porting them & paying Disney the licensing fees more's the pity!๐
They show up on sale on GOG & Steam from time to time & old PC'S like I had until recently ran it fine so probably a cheaper bet vs streaming it.
Re: Wild Arms (PS1) - Distinctly 90s JRPG Still Sparks the Spirit of Adventure
Wish Suikoden 1 & 2 would be a part of the ps1 classics coming over to ps4/5...though at this point we don't even know if they're extending the range given the only additional title since launch has been RE Director's Cut,& psp Super Stardust?๐ค
There's so many jrpg's alone that'd be worthwhile additions much less other ps1/ps2 games. But again,Sony have been so uncommunicative we just don't know if their "classics" range will just remain ps3/now streaming titles not accessible to most countries!
Re: Return to Monkey Island with a New Look, But Not on PS5, PS4 Just Yet
Unfortunately the developer has form for this as Thimbleweed Park was also a timed exclusive, (Xbone in that case)....but had hoped this being Monkey Island & Devolver Digital publishing it'd be multformat day 1! Sigh! ๐
Re: Mini Review: Wonder Boy Collection (PS4) - Two Arcade and Two Mega Drive Games, But Questionable Value
@JamieO Great (extra),summing up & much as I suspected....Ratalaika aren't a diabolically bad dev as far as these retro conversions go...but compared to others mentioned they just do perfunctory ones rather than giving options that dazzle.๐ค
I would say normally I'd wait for a sale (esp.as Wonderboy was only ever available on Japan's Arcade Archives or the horrid Wonderboy Returns).
But I really don't want to support their selling a gimped version when they could sell the Anniversary version down the line if they bother listening to the feedback!
Re: PSA: PS Plus Extra, Premium Games Removed from the Service Aren't Yours to Keep
In itself not a great surprise nor any different to when you'd be locked out of ps plus freebies if you let your subscription lspse.
Albeit more recent PS Plus releases give you a plus version & a separate sku to buy on psn if you liked/ preferred to buy it outright.
Re: Mini Review: Wonder Boy Collection (PS4) - Two Arcade and Two Mega Drive Games, But Questionable Value
Just find it sad that rather than listen to the feedback & do something about making Anniversary collection available to all they've just buried their heads & hope all the bad will they've created get forgotten about!
Re: Mini Review: Wonder Boy Collection (PS4) - Two Arcade and Two Mega Drive Games, But Questionable Value
Re: Resident Evil: Director's Cut (PS1) - Iconic Survival Horror
As pretty as the RE 1 Remake was, never liked the Crimson zombie concept nor it missing the ability to "clear" areas like you could in classic vanilla Resident Evil with the extra ammo of the easier game mode.
The static backdrops & not knowing what was around the corner really hit home the tension!๐
Just a pity the only way to buy it on ps4/5 outside of Deluxe/Premium is paying $23AU for the triple pack on ps3 but currently have no access to RE2/RE3 Classic games!๐
Re: Pocky & Rocky Reshrined (PS4) - Retro Revival Is More Reimagining Than Remake
Like has been noted, some extra control schemes are a definite miss here, but I suspect this will be a must have/wishlisted item if not necessarily a day 1.๐
Re: Mini Review: Wonder Boy Collection (PS4) - Two Arcade and Two Mega Drive Games, But Questionable Value
Re: Mini Review: Wonder Boy Collection (PS4) - Two Arcade and Two Mega Drive Games, But Questionable Value
Re: Sony Will Roll Out Superior 60Hz NTSC Options for Majority of PS Plus Classics
@__jamiie Thought I recalled of something along those lines...it's a P.R. friendly way to get your customers excited about the classics program & feel part of it...sadly a concept that falls on deaf ears with the current management!
Re: Sony Exceeds PS Plus Promise with Over 800 Games Across New Tiers
If you're one of the formerly ps now territories with access to ps3 streamed games, great. IF you're part of the Deluxe regions with no streaming, that retro games list is substantially less for the $75 extra in my region!๐ค
Still not sure if we'll see much of a boost to the ps1/psp & super disappointing number of ps2 titles that are on offer thus far....those ps3 server blades aren't going to last forever!
Re: Sony Will Roll Out Superior 60Hz NTSC Options for Majority of PS Plus Classics
A step in the right direction.๐
Still wonder how we'll get on with future releases. If they're open to more ntsc releases we might get some of the U.S. only jrpg releases.
Just wish there was somewhere PS owners could vote on some nominations or something as far as games go!
Re: Potion Permit Is Stardew Valley But with Alchemy, Coming to PS5, PS4 on September 22nd
Given ex-Stardew publisher Chucklefish's recent disdain towards Playstation owners means there'll ever be a PS Witchbrook alongside undoubted Switch/other consoles, this might be the closest there'll be to getting a similar game.
Re: PS Plus Extra, Premium Now Live in Europe, Australia and New Zealand
Can see Resident Evil dual shock & Tekken 2 as PSN AU new releases but like the U.S. roll-out only available by ps plus deluxe subscription.
Looking at mostly $15 pricing for the other ps1/psp games...I'm assuming the Jak & Daxter series have retained their ps4 classic price point.๐ค
Whilst Deluxe might look a good price on paper, the lack of a big non streaming catalogue of classics thus far really isn't an advertisement to upgrade!
Re: Reminder: PS Plus Extra, Premium Roll Out Across Europe Tomorrow
Feels like a lifetime ago when finally confirming the upper tiers & the possibilities when confirming retro game support from ps1/ps2/psp eras being especially interesting given the lack of ps3/now streaming down under.
Unfortunately since the initial Asian launch all we've seen is what,Resident Evil PS1 get added?๐ค
Rather than the promise of hundreds of titles, we've seen a literal handful from the ps1 classics from the ps3 store,& certainly zero "new" classics that never got a digital release.
On PS2 games, its feels worse...they've seemingly not only repurposed the so-so ps2 classics on ps4 emulation, but seemingly haven't made any compatibility improvements so they've only dared offered the Jak Collection for ps4/5 owners & well short of what was a short list on ps4 already!๐ค
It just felt like a rushed idea, chucked in at the last minute & much like the ps1 classic console, if it "fails to get enough engagement",will be used by Jim Ryan to justify his stance.
The reality is,if you want to push a premium product don't rehash older failed ideas,& resource a dedicated in-house retro team, but why do that when live service games are in the offing & a full price remaster on TLOU ps5,right Jim?
Re: PS Plus Retail Cards Could Potentially Be Discontinued
Given for years one could be fairly confident,(& pickup),some discounted PS Plus subscriptions during previous Days of Play/Black Friday sales from Bricks & Mortar retailers to potentially being forced to solely buy them via the store psn would suck bigtime. ๐ค
Used to circumvent the need for having a credit card attached to the account as it would want otherwise & you were "stacking".
That they didn't foresee or decide on a definitive stacking restriction prior to the reveal of the new tiers suggests a management that doesn't use their own products! ๐ค
Much like despite the tease of a large library of retro games for the Permium/Deluxe tier,it feels like most are tied into the streaming only former ps now & those of us in Deluxe regions are getting only a token few "classic" ps1/ps2/psp titles, that make older abandoned efforts like the ps2 on ps4 range seem coordinated in comparison!๐
Re: Baldo: The Guardian Owls Gets a Ton of Free Content in The Three Fairies Update
Re: Mini Review: Final Vendetta (PS5) - Brutal Beat-'Em-Up Will Kick Your Ass
This is the same Bitmap Bureau that made the rather nice Smash TV style Xeno Crisis,(& chipped in with programming duties on Battle Axe),so happy enough with a team that knows their niche & audience & keeps to their strengths.๐
Good time if you're a horizontal scroller beat-em-up fan,if painful on the wallet!
