Re: Horizon Hatred Simmers Once More As Sony Announces Movie Adaptation

Tchunga

"We’re not even convinced Sony is “pushing the IP down our throats”, like is so often insinuated. Four games in eight years does not seem entirely unreasonable to us, especially when two of them are spin-offs."

I guess we're not counting the Horizon Zero Dawn remaster then? If you include that then it's 5 games in 8 years. And if you start counting from 2022 onward then its 4 games in 2 years. Yeah. With this framing in mind you can clearly see the oversaturation of this IP. Even if it doesn't bother you personally or even if Horizon is your literal favorite franchise ever, its still disingenuous to imply Sony isn't milking Horizon in some way shape or form. It should be fairly obvious to anyone at this point, regardless if you're a fan or not

Re: PS5's Astro Bot Now the Most Decorated Platformer Ever with Over 100 GOTY Awards

Tchunga

I love Astro Bot and it is absolutely the best game that released in 2024 but I would still hate to see it become overrated. Don't get me wrong it's a great 3D platformer, probably the best one to release in the last 10 years, but it is no where near the same level as the best 3D Mario games. It is specifically lacking in movement options and techncial skill that makes those games so infinitely replayable. Astro Bot while great, it is kind of a one and done type of game. Maybe you 100% it and go for the platinum but that's it. There's nothing to master or go back to

Re: Game of the Year: #4 - Stellar Blade

Tchunga

I actually really enjoyed my time with Stellar Blade but #4 of the year? Really? I know these lists are entirely subjective but still I probably wouldn't even include Stellar Blade in my top 10 games of the year let alone in the top 5. I mean its a pretty-good-but-not-great action game but thats about it. It had a phenomenal OST but other than that there isn't all that much to write home about

The combat is worse than Sekiro or Lies of P. The story isn't as good as a Nier Automata. And for a character action game it isnt as over the top or ridiculous as Bayonetta or Metal Gear Rising. Stellar Blade takes inspiration from a lot of different games but it doesn't bring anything new of its own to the table. I fear this game my be somewhat overhyped for what it is

Re: Game of the Year: #7 - Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Tchunga

Going off of the comments you might actually be gaslit into thinking that Rebirth has a fanbase, lol. This and Wukong are my two biggest disappointments of the year. Not once during my playthrough of FF7 part 1 did I think "you know what would make this game better? A million incredibly boring mini games, a bloated ubisoft open world, and story that doesnt get going until the last 5 to 10 hours". Rebirth is a game that blatantly does not respect your time and so I don't respect it. Hopefully FF7 part 3 is better

Re: Game of the Year: #8 - Dragon's Dogma 2

Tchunga

It should be higher on the list...rigged! RIGGED! Jk, jk. I do think it should be higher but Im glad that DD2 got included at all. Seeing as this game seems to be very controversial in certain corners of the internet. Good to see it at least getting some love.

DD2 still has the best combat and exploration out of any game that I played in 2024. It's a fantastic open world RPG and its up there with Astro Bot as one of my favorite games of the year. A well deserved #8 spot

Re: Game of the Year: Best PS5 Action Game of 2024

Tchunga

@Majin_Deicide That's interesting I feel like combat is the one category that DD2 absolutely clears either Stellar Blade or Black Myth in (Stellar Blade maybe less so). The sheer variety of options available from each of the vocations almost guarantees that no two combat encounters will ever play out the same. On the other hand Stellar Blade and especially Wukong become very one note by the end with their limited combos and abilities

Re: Game of the Year: Best PS5 Action Game of 2024

Tchunga

@SterlingEyes Personally I'd consider DD2 to be an "Action RPG". So realistically it could be lumped in with either best action or best RPG. Depending on who you ask

With that being said though, I do find genre definitions in general to be somewhat pointless and dumb. Seeing as no one can ever seem to agree on what anything is

Re: Game of the Year: Best PS5 Action Game of 2024

Tchunga

Glad to see Dragon's Dogma 2 actually get some of the recognition it deserves. This game SHOULD have been nominated for GOTY but I digress. The write up really hit the nail on the head though. Whatever other problems DD2 may have had, they all kind of fade into the background. Because what you come to Dragon's Dogma for is the combat and the combat is top notch

Re: Black Myth: Wukong Deserved Astro Bot's Game of the Year Award, Says Game Science CEO

Tchunga

The fact that Wukong even got a GOTY nomination at all still confounds me. Let alone the idea of it actually winning. This may be a hot take but I think going forward only games that score an 80 on metacrtitic or higher can be eligible for game of the year. It shouldn't matter how many people voted for it if its a 79 or below. Its been proven time and time again that there are far too many people with horrendus taste for pure democracy alone to be the be-all and end-all

Re: Black Myth: Wukong Declared Ultimate Game of the Year at the Golden Joystick Awards 2024

Tchunga

Well congrats to Game Science but I gotta say that this is pretty undeserved. Black Myth Wukong isn't a BAD game by any means but it is an incredibly mid one.

Floaty combat, basic level design, nonexistant pacing, wildly inconsistent difficulty, and invisible walls galore. I mean the list goes on and on. A game with only half the problems of Wukong probably wouldn't be worthy of GOTY, but gamers seem to love it for whatever the reason. Like Alan Wake 2, I guess I'll just have to chalk this one up to being "not for me"

Re: Vast Majority of Gamers Say Elden Ring DLC Should Never Have Been Nominated for Game of the Year

Tchunga

@Nf157 My point wasnt really that DD2 should have been nominated over SOTE. It was that it COULD have been nominated over it. There are plenty of other games that are deserving of that slot over SOTE. Silent Hill 2, Stellar Blade, Animal Well, Space Marine 2, ect. This year isn't exactly short on high quality releases to pick from

SOTE didn't release 2 years ago but Elden Ring did, which is needed to play SOTE. You see the problem? If SOTE had been a standalone game I'd be completely on board with what you're saying. But an extension of a pre existing game isn't a game in and of itself

Re: Vast Majority of Gamers Say Elden Ring DLC Should Never Have Been Nominated for Game of the Year

Tchunga

The worst part about SOTE being nominated for GOTY isn't even the nomination itself, but more so the fact that its taking up a slot that an actual new game could of potentially had in its stead.

Personally I would have liked to see Dragon's Dogma 2 get that sixth slot. But now its relegated to the best RPG category where its up against, what do you know, SHADOW OF THE ERDTREE. What a surprise.

Such a shame that actual 2024 releases are getting snubbed by games that came out 2 years ago

Re: The Game Awards Will Confirm 2024 Nominees on Monday

Tchunga

@Matroska That's a bit of an oversimplification. Its not like it's just one or two people making all of the decisions. There are multiple different reviewers and outlets that all cast their votes. Its not as if some complete and utter trash like Life of Black Tiger could make into the running. If something gets nominated then it's usually of some sort of baseline quality. Usually.

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Astro Bot?

Tchunga

I'm fairly picky when it comes to 3D platformers. I tend to like the 3D platformers that strike a good balance between open exploration and actual platforming challenges. I feel like many platformers dont get this balance quite right

For instance, Crash Bandicoot leans far too heavily into the platforming aspect and almost feels on rails. But on the other hand games like Mario Odyssey focus almost soley on the exploration and often foregos platforming in favor of gimmicks and prolonged scavenger hunts.

I believe games like Mario Galaxy perfectly strike the balance between exploration and actual designed platforming challenges. And Astro Bot lands successfully in this camp in my opinion. It's my ideal 3D platformer and is easily the best one that I've played since Mario Galaxy 2. 9/10. (I'd give it a 10 but it loses a point for splashing sprint)

Re: PS5 Pro Reveal Is Already Sony's Most Disliked Console Announcement

Tchunga

@twitchtvpat Just because there are paypigs out there that are willing to pay exorbitant prices for products that aren't at all worth it does not mean the PS5 Pro is somehow a good value. Of course its going to sell out at launch, even the Wii U sold out at launch if you remember. And it was generally hard to find for the first 6 months it was on the market. That's just how it always goes with new tech, the enthusiasts show up on day one, no matter what, and the rest of the market is TBD. It's not a one-to-one sign of either popularity or value. Yes, there are some people interested in this machine. But there are far more people that are disinterested in it as well

Re: Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree Patch 1.14 Makes the Final Boss Easier

Tchunga

I assume the usual suspects will likely mald at hearing this but putting that aside this is a great move. Consort Radahn, like many Elden Ring bosses, was just complete BS. Not being able to see what move the boss is even doing because of some nauseating partical effect lightshow isnt a fun or interesting form of challenge.

Now waiting nearly 3 months after the fact to fix this is far from ideal but at least it didn't take them 2 years to fix the fight like it did with Elden Beast

Re: Astro Bot PS5 Is the Best Game of the Year So Far

Tchunga

It's weird that Sony of all companies is the one keeping 3D platformers alive. While we haven't gotten a mainline 3D Mario title since 2017, Sony has put out Sackboy A Big Adventure, Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart, and now Astro Bot. And they're all of a fairly high quality too, you love to see it

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Black Myth: Wukong?

Tchunga

@DennisReynolds Currently on Chapter 4 and its literally just repeating the same exact light attack combo over and over again while waiting for your cooldowns to finish. And then just spamming your abilities until the boss is dead. In terms of 3D action combat, it doesn't get much simpler or basic than this

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Black Myth: Wukong?

Tchunga

@DennisReynolds Maybe if you haven't played too many action games in the last 10 or so years I could see how Wukong's combat might be somewhat decent but there are much better offerings today. Bloodborne, Monster Hunter, and the new God of War games just to name a few. Even the recent Lies of P gave you more options both in terms of offense and defense

Re: Visions of Mana (PS5) - Classic RPG Series Returns with Good But Flawed Intentions

Tchunga

I was really looking forward to this one until I played the demo and was so thoroughly put off. But it sounds like the final product might be slightly better though? Still, hard to justify dropping $60 for a pretty-good-but-not-great game during such a busy release period. Its a shame too, I feel like Visions could have been the next big JRPG but I guess the Mana series is just forever doomed to live in FF's shadow
