@tselliot Glad to know I'm not the only one. I studied abroad for a year about 14 years ago and was away from my PS3, so I fell behind in terms of playing new releases (I did have my PSP though). I was never able to catch up. In fact, I've since fell even further behind due to not having as much time to play; currently, the games I play are around 5 years old or older. On average I pay $15 per game. I don't remember the last game that I paid more than $20 for. I even have a few PS5 games already. Patience definitely does pay off.
But there are many PS4 games that I have that I'm really eager to play, but I'm holding off to play on PS5 where they run at 60fps and with other enhancements, so that's why I'm probably just going to buy one hopefully later this year.
I've held out this long on buying a PS5 due to my massive backlog and was planning to finally get one when the rumored redesigned model launches in Q4. I don't think we will see a Pro model released this gen, but if they do release one after I get mine, I'll definitely feel the sting. I would likely sell it and upgrade to the Pro.
@dschons Patches are applied to all versions of a game, whether it be digital, disc, or PS+; they're all the same game. That's just how it works. No need to worry.
This article contains an error. It states "wireless DualSense support", but the PS blog post states "DualSense controller support through a wired connection". That caught my eye because all PC games with DualSense support to date are wired only, as pathetic as that is.
Sony should really release another wireless adapter for PC, but a good one this time. The Dualshock 4 one was too big and its functionality was limited. The updated Xbox adapter is excellent.
This is great news. One less reason to keep my PS4 Pro hooked up after I get a PS5. While I'm certainly grateful and satisfied, I can't help but wonder how hard it would've been for them to add an uncapped frame rate option while they were working on the patch.
@Ken_Kaniff That's not entirely true. Sony does have a PS2 emulator built, but it isn't very good and doesn't run well on PS5 (see Ape Escape 2 for example). It seems they have abandoned it, unfortunately. They're really lagging far behind their competitors as far as backward compatibility/classics library is concerned.
I loved Dark Mirror and Logan's Shadow back on the PSP, but I wish Sony would release the PS2 versions instead, which likely feature superior graphics and performance compared to the PSP versions.
I didn't believe it at first, but I checked Target and, lo and behold, there are 6 units in stock at my local store. And those are the base console for $500, which is even more surprising since the bundles are usually the only ones available. This was the first time since launch that I've seen them in stock at a major retailer with the Add to a Cart button.
However, at this point I'm just going to wait for the revised model expected to release in Q4. I have more than enough unplayed games to tie me over until then.
They should mention all of the PS4 games of those 4000 that "exhibit errors" on PS5 and how after 2+ years they still haven't improved their backwards compatibility support at all even though they said they would. Even their own beloved Shadow of the Colossus has texture issues. Super Stardust Ultra too. Not to mention major 3rd party titles such as Assassin's Creed Syndicate and Batman Arkham City. And don't get me started on the issues with the PS2 catalog. It's appreciated that the individual teams patched some of their titles, but many never received a patch. For example, The Last Guardian can run locked at 60 fps if played from the disc and patches are deleted. They can't be troubled to patch the game with official support for unlocking the frame rate—a feature that was present at the game's launch and was subsequently removed. They simply don't care about their legacy catalog, unfortunately. Xbox is way ahead in this department.
While this is good news and as a non Extra or Premium subscriber I especially appreciate that PlayStation allowed me to claim the game for free since I had already purchased it on PSP many years ago, I can't help but feel the work done on this was kind of wasted considering how this is essentially a lower quality version of Super Stardust Ultra, which is already available on PS4 and PS5. Although Ultra is one of the games that has the "may exhibit errors" on PS5 disclaimer. I would've preferred they put the time into patching that instead. Aside for trophies, why would someone want to play a PSP version of a game when there's a PS4 version available?
For me, the writing was on the wall with this one. This title's commercial failure will have a major impact on Square and as a result I suspect we'll be hearing big news from them in the not too distant future. Just my prediction..
This would definitely be a step in the right direction imo. I always found it much more satisfying to utilize the games' physics and mechanics to gain speed. There's a certain rush experienced when rolling downhill. Similar to skating down a ramp in a Tony Hawk game, riding down a mountain in a snowboarding game, or even swinging in Spiderman. Play Spiderman 2 or the Insomniac titles, then play The Amazing Spider-Man 2 movie game and you'll immediately notice something is off. It's because the speed resets with each swing; all momentum is lost. Not fun.
I still don't have a PS5. Was planning on buying one when they released the first major revision, so this will likely be the one I get. I'm just concerned they will price it without the disc drive at the same price as the current disc version and the attachment will cost extra; essentially, the price to get a PS5 with a disc drive would be higher than it is now. This would be unprecedented, however, since I don't believe a console's price has ever been increased with a hardware revision of equivalent specs.
I definitely want the disc drive because my current library is mostly disc-based. I even have some PS5 discs already.
How coincidental; I just played Shadow of the Colossus and was wondering when we will see what Ueda has been up to.
His games are truly special, including The Last Guardian. I thought it was a worthy successor and was underrated/appreciated. Sure, the button layout was dated, but it didn't take long for me to adjust to it. I just wish Sony would patch it to run at 60fps on PS5. The fact that it already can when installed from the disc without patches makes it all the more frustrating. Shadow could also use a PS5 patch. It actually runs worse on PS5 as there are graphical glitches. It would also be great if it could run at 60fps in the quality mode. This is one area where PlayStation repeatedly disappoints. Their approach to backwards compatibility is really inadequate, to the point that they're unwilling to update their own games to play better on PS5 unless there is a direct financial incentive.
@Denni5m You missed my point. I understand that PC supports the same PCIe 4.0 SSDs as PS5 does. But the vast majority of PC gamers don't have one of those in their rigs. Developers try to target a wide range of hardware when developing for PC. Otherwise they would be limiting their potential sales numbers. If they were to put out a game that required an SSD that matched or exceeded the PS5's in terms of speed, their customer base would be extremely small. This would not be feasible financially. Therefore this may be why the Returnal port requires so much more RAM compared to most games; it could be the solution the devs chose to solve this problem since 16GB+ RAM is more common and upgrading RAM is cheaper and much easier than upgrading storage.
@Shstrick My thoughts exactly. I've been thinking about this for a while: how are PS5 games going to be ported to PC when they were originally designed for a system that has a much faster storage drive than the average gaming PC? That was my only concern about Sony bringing all PS5 games to PC; would they require their dev studios to limit SSD speed utilization in their games in order to ensure compatibility with PCs? I hope this Returnal port indicates that they are not going down that route.
@Kidfried I stay away from Twitter so I wouldn't know, but I don't think the outrage mob ever deserves a reaction or even an acknowledgement. Better left ignored.
So unnecessary... Why can't Twitter posts simply be ignored? Why do companies always need to put out public statements addressing something as if they are representing the sentiment of every individual team member, when in reality they only represent the people in the positions of power? When an individual makes a statement, we know that person is speaking for his/herself. It's even more obvious in this case since John is no longer with the company.
While my perception was that the game scored the way it did due to the overall game design, it is interesting to see it pointed out that the PC version scored better despite that aspect remaining unchanged. I would also be upset seeing that after I lost my job due to the game's critical reception. But nothing good ever comes from Twitter. John and Jeff are talented developers with a great track record and I look forward to their next games. No need to demonize him for venting his frustrations, even if he may be a bit off-point.
@awp69 It doesn't look like there is a game called "Inertial Drift: Twilight Rivals Edition" on the PS Store. All I see are the PS4 and PS5 versions of the base game; each priced $20. Then under add-ons there's the Twilight Rivals pack labeled as an "Episode" and priced $10. But this is only available if the PS5 version is selected, otherwise it shows "No add-ons available" if the PS4 version is selected. So I'm not sure why Push Square is referring to this as a sort of complete edition for PS5.
At the 10 sec mark when he fully opens his hands, how are the controllers being supported? Is it just gravity holding the grips against his palms? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe PS VR2 has hand straps like the Valve Index.
@nomither6 So I won't use the word "fan" to describe myself if it makes you feel better. I enjoy the original gameplay, character designs, story approach, etc. I didn't like most of the subsequent games despite playing nearly all of them. I generally liked the Advance titles, Sonic 4, and Generations despite each of them being very different. It's not nostalgia or bias if I don't find a game to be fun to play, or if I find the dialogue to be childish and irritating, or the writing to be excessive. As I said, I don't have anything against Sega making a game like that, but they should not have turned an already established success into this different entity. In fact, I don't mind if they continue making these new-era sonic games. I just think they should also try adapting the original design into 3D because it has been proven to work well and there's nothing else like it.
To further clarify, when I was a kid there was a soup I really liked. Around the mid-2000s, the company that made the soup was bought out and the new company changed the recipe. I didn't like the new taste, so I stopped eating it. Many others share my experience. True story. It's not nostalgia; what I once liked was changed into something drastically different and I subjectively perceive it as worse. It might have the same name and a similar appearance, but it's just too different in essence. See Theseus' paradox. In contrast, I love the OG God of War games and I think the 2018 title is excellent as well despite being very different. We don't always have to divide into teams (tribes) regarding our opinions.
I would say I'm a huge OG Sonic fan, but not so much anything Sega has done with the property since it made the jump to 3D, with the exception of Generations and Mania. I don't see what many love about the Adventure titles. I recognize there is some appeal to the boost gameplay when executed well, but I maintain that the original momentum-based gameplay is far superior. I don't understand why Sega won't even attempt to adapt that formula for 3D. Fan games have proved it works and is a blast to play. I don't like the tonal and character direction of the post-OG games either. It's just not Sonic; it's too different. Sega should have made it its own distinct property while they continued iterating on the successful original games. Although, that other IP would probably have been retired shortly thereafter since those games could never have survived if not for the Sonic branding.
I'll definitely give Frontiers a try eventually since I think the open zone concept is a step in the right direction. If only they would take a cue from Sonic Utopia...
I'm still holding out to play this game at 60fps. My backlog is big enough so I'm in no rush. If not via a patch or a native PS5 version, then on PC when I eventually build one. If Ubisoft can patch AC Origins, Odyssey and The Crew 2, and Sony can patch all of their titles from the late PS4 gen, and Techland can patch Dying Light from 2015, then there's no good reason Rockstar couldn't do the same for RDR2 which sold better than any of the aforementioned titles. The same can be said for Activision and their Crash and Spyro titles, especially CTR Nitro-Fueled.
@IonMagi Microsoft did not patch those games; Origins and Odyssey were patched by Ubisoft (same on PS5). If you're referring to the other enhanced AC titles, those were achieved via Xbox's fps boost feature. From Digital Foundry: "...adjust frame-rate caps at the Direct3D level, increasing performance within the system, without any changes at all to the original code". See these articles from Eurogamer for more info on how fps boost works: https://www.eurogamer.net/digitalfoundry-2021-fps-boost-brilliant-for-xbox-gamers-but-we-hope-to-see-more-from-series-x
Pacific Rift is my favorite racing game; I still play it and Apocalypse every once in a while. For PS3 games, I would honestly prefer remastered collections on PS5 over emulation, like Sony did for PS2 on PS3. Resistance, Killzone, Motorstorm, Ratchet, and Infamous—that's all I want from PS first party. And if they would bring over those PS2 collections and RDR, GTA4, MGS4 from 3rd-party, my wishlist would be fulfilled.
@Uncharted2007 Yeah, that comment about respecting other's opinions was definitely Ryan's most heinous act of pure evil. Good thing we have great journalists to keep reminding everyone of that reprehensible utterance. Never forget
@Uncharted2007 It actually makes more sense because going forward they will only have to manufacture one hardware model; the disc drive will be a separate product. They will then sell one SKU with the standalone console and another with the 2 bundled together. Additionally, they will only need 1 mold for the faceplates compared to the 2 different molds they currently require. There are further advantages to unifying the design, such as marketing and iconography.
I always expected this would be the route console manufacturers would eventually take as physical media becomes less popular. I didn't think it would happen until next gen though.
I have been waiting for the first major redesign to get a PS5, but I also still buy physical games, so I would keep the drive attached. I really hope this detachable design doesn't mean we will lose a USB port compared to the original models. If that's the case, I might try to pick up an original design model instead, provided the other improvements aren't that significant.
Great to hear this news. Unity parkour was excellent; it just needed a little more polish. I still go back to that game every so often. Mirage is looking very promising.
@Ken_Kaniff You're right. I thought it had already been released, but what I was thinking of were the reports that it had been rated in Korea. Thanks for setting the record straight. Hopefully it will have trophy support and will be available to those who already purchased it in the past.
@Milktastrophe True. I was thinking from the perspective of From/Bandai doing it as a gesture of goodwill to their customers who supported their game despite its performance issues. But you're right. Who am I kidding...
You would think with such success the devs would release a patch to fix the frame rate issues, especially on current gen consoles. But 6 months have passed and still nothing...
I managed to get all online trophies in Mercenary except for 1 - Aces High. It was one of the most bs trophies I've ever come across. If I had known about it beforehand I wouldn't even have attempted. I'm not even a hunter, but ever since Killzone 2, I always wanted to platinum a KZ game and this one looked doable. Boy was I wrong. The game is excellent however. One of the best KZ games imo. And possibly my favorite Vita game.
I'm not sure why so many people are down on Shadow Fall. I remember really enjoying both the single player and MP. The narrative was nothing special, but that's true for all the KZ titles. The lore is what's really appealing about them, along with the gameplay and visuals.
I doubt they will raise the price. It's more likely they just won't do the traditional 3rd year price drop. So we may see a slimmer, rev 2 PS5 that's cheaper to manufacture, but the savings won't get passed on to us consumers, which is understandable.
I was able to buy a PS5 around a year ago from PS Direct via invite, but I sold it to a neighbor who was more desperate for one and anyway I was still playing through my PS4, PS3 and Vita backlog. I figured I would get another one in a few months when they were more readily available. Boy was I wrong. I refuse to subscribe to those memberships that are required to purchase one from the big retailers and I've had no luck with Amazon. I'm no longer eligible to get one via PS Direct invite since it's limited one per household (I guess I could try with another PSN account and ship to a different address). I'm also not interested in hunting one down online using stock alerts and competing with bots.
I think at this point I'm just going to hold off until they release a new model—either a Slim or Pro if they do that again. My backlog is still massive and I've been enjoying playing some PS3 and Vita games I've been wanting to get to for years. I can hold out another year or so.
@thedevilsjester I think PlayStation is still competing for mainstream market share even if their device is technologically more on par with the high-end PC headsets. They've always struck a good balance between mainstream and enthusiast appeal. And even with all the advanced tech built into PS VR2, I maintain that the cost savings of not having to include an SoC—processor, memory, storage, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, etc.—plus a battery, will allow them to hit the $399 price point. But you might be right. We'll just have to wait and see.
@thedevilsjester We also have to consider the fact that even at $499 PS VR was the least expensive of the of the major VR headsets back when it launched. The PS4's price was also slashed to $299 at the same time, so even with the price of the console included, it offered the lowest cost to entry. Now, with Quest 2 on the market that's no longer the case. $399 flat, no other hardware needed, no wires, has a lot of content/dev support, and has most of hit games. Plus the tracking is great and it can optionally be connected to a PC for the enhanced experience. I would say PS faces some stiff competition and knows that they need to price it competitively, even if it means selling them at a loss, just like they have always done with their hardware and like they are currently doing with PS5 Digital Edition.
$400 USD is the right price. It's important to note that the Quest has the processing hardware, storage and memory built in, while PS VR does not. This should allow them to match the Quest's price easily.

Re: Poll: Did You Buy Sonic Frontiers?
Re: Ben Stiller Is Kratos in God of War Ragnarok Ad with John Travolta, LeBron James
I couldn't even make it through half the ad. Very cringe.
Re: Red Dead Redemption 2 Fans Still Hoping for a PS5 Patch
Re: Elden Ring Update 1.07 Buffs Magic and Abilities, Rebalances PvP Damage, More
Have the frame rate issues on the PS5 version still not been fixed? Is the PS4 version on PS5 still the best way to get a smooth frame rate?
Re: Trio of PS Plus Assassin's Creed Games Won't Be Playable on PS5
@IonMagi Microsoft did not patch those games; Origins and Odyssey were patched by Ubisoft (same on PS5). If you're referring to the other enhanced AC titles, those were achieved via Xbox's fps boost feature. From Digital Foundry: "...adjust frame-rate caps at the Direct3D level, increasing performance within the system, without any changes at all to the original code". See these articles from Eurogamer for more info on how fps boost works:

Re: PS3 Classic MotorStorm Pacific Rift Looks Sensational in 4K, 60fps on PC
Pacific Rift is my favorite racing game; I still play it and Apocalypse every once in a while. For PS3 games, I would honestly prefer remastered collections on PS5 over emulation, like Sony did for PS2 on PS3. Resistance, Killzone, Motorstorm, Ratchet, and Infamous—that's all I want from PS first party. And if they would bring over those PS2 collections and RDR, GTA4, MGS4 from 3rd-party, my wishlist would be fulfilled.
Re: PlayStation Boss Jim Ryan Demanded Firm Reinvigorate Interest in Indies
@Uncharted2007 Yeah, that comment about respecting other's opinions was definitely Ryan's most heinous act of pure evil. Good thing we have great journalists to keep reminding everyone of that reprehensible utterance. Never forget
Re: Rumour: PS5 Redesign to Feature Detachable Disc Drive
@Uncharted2007 It actually makes more sense because going forward they will only have to manufacture one hardware model; the disc drive will be a separate product. They will then sell one SKU with the standalone console and another with the 2 bundled together. Additionally, they will only need 1 mold for the faceplates compared to the 2 different molds they currently require. There are further advantages to unifying the design, such as marketing and iconography.
Re: Rumour: PS5 Redesign to Feature Detachable Disc Drive
I always expected this would be the route console manufacturers would eventually take as physical media becomes less popular. I didn't think it would happen until next gen though.
I have been waiting for the first major redesign to get a PS5, but I also still buy physical games, so I would keep the drive attached. I really hope this detachable design doesn't mean we will lose a USB port compared to the original models. If that's the case, I might try to pick up an original design model instead, provided the other improvements aren't that significant.
Re: Assassin's Creed Mirage Will Try to Bring Unity's Highly Praised Parkour System Back
Great to hear this news. Unity parkour was excellent; it just needed a little more polish. I still go back to that game every so often. Mirage is looking very promising.
Re: Trophies Confirmed for Incoming PS1 Classic Syphon Filter 2
@Ken_Kaniff You're right. I thought it had already been released, but what I was thinking of were the reports that it had been rated in Korea. Thanks for setting the record straight. Hopefully it will have trophy support and will be available to those who already purchased it in the past.
Re: Trophies Confirmed for Incoming PS1 Classic Syphon Filter 2
I wonder why they didn't add trophies to Resistance Retribution. Are PSP games not able to get trophy support?
Re: Ooh La La! SEGA Plotting Space Channel 5, Comix Zone Movies
@nessisonett It's worse than the first. All it has going for it are a few good action scenes
Re: Elden Ring Sells 16.6 Million Copies in Just Four Months
@Milktastrophe True. I was thinking from the perspective of From/Bandai doing it as a gesture of goodwill to their customers who supported their game despite its performance issues. But you're right. Who am I kidding...
Re: Elden Ring Sells 16.6 Million Copies in Just Four Months
You would think with such success the devs would release a patch to fix the frame rate issues, especially on current gen consoles. But 6 months have passed and still nothing...
Re: Killzone Shadow Fall, Other Guerrilla Games Now Stripped of Online Play
Re: Sony Coy on Potential PS5 Price Increase
I doubt they will raise the price. It's more likely they just won't do the traditional 3rd year price drop. So we may see a slimmer, rev 2 PS5 that's cheaper to manufacture, but the savings won't get passed on to us consumers, which is understandable.
Re: The PS5 Stock Situation Finally Seems to Be Improving
Re: Reaction: Meta Quest 2's Price Hike Will Have PSVR2 Relieved or Rubbing Its Hands
@thedevilsjester
I think PlayStation is still competing for mainstream market share even if their device is technologically more on par with the high-end PC headsets.
Re: Reaction: Meta Quest 2's Price Hike Will Have PSVR2 Relieved or Rubbing Its Hands
@thedevilsjester
We also have to consider the fact that even at $499 PS VR was the least expensive of the of the major VR headsets back when it launched.
Re: Reaction: Meta Quest 2's Price Hike Will Have PSVR2 Relieved or Rubbing Its Hands
$400 USD is the right price.
It's important to note that the Quest has the processing hardware, storage and memory built in, while PS VR does not. This should allow them to match the Quest's price easily.
