Re: As the PS Plus Debate Rages, Sony Registers Record Subscribers

Hengist

@get2sammyb 'but outside of hardcore circles like this site I wonder how much it'll actually move the needle for people.'

I've never considered myself as part of a hardcore circle (nor would I ever want to be labelled with such a tag), but if MS are going to start offering online for free, then I know which way my needle will move. The ONLY reason I have ever subscribed to PS+, is for the ability to play online. For me, the service offers nothing else that I want.

Re: Poll: What New PS5 Games Are You Most Excited About?

Hengist

@LiamCroft My apologies Liam. I thought that it stated select three. I've participated in other PS polls, in the past, that have required three selections, so this time I mustn't have read correctly/just assumed that it was the same.

P.S. I now wish that I could go back and change it/correct MY mistake (if it was possible), but I've already forgotten which other two randoms I chose.

Re: Poll: What New PS5 Games Are You Most Excited About?

Hengist

As per usual with these PS polls, there was only one title on the list which sparked any interest from me. So as per usual, I selected the one that interests me, along with two others, selected at random which I have no clue about.
Why do we have to select three? In my case, it just provides false results for the poll.

Re: Sounds Like Bloodborne Will Release on PC

Hengist

@Col_McCafferty
"And you dislike the majority of PlayStation exclusives? How do you know if you haven't played them?"

I never mentioned that I'd never played them. That was your incorrect assumption.

There are many software titles which I've bought over the last 40 years of video gaming, that I have thought were terrible. A proportion of Playstation exclusives are included within that number.

_______________

"Christ another PC weirdo."

It's not big or clever to use derogatory remarks, if you can't conduct an intellectual conversation.

Re: Sounds Like Bloodborne Will Release on PC

Hengist

@Col_McCafferty "Wait, so you've never bought a console and never will.so.wtf are you on here then?"

I've never bought a Space rocket, but I watched one take off last week. Was I wrong in showing an interest?
I really dislike the majority of Playstation exclusives, but I like to visit this site and read about them.
In summary, I can understand the reasons why BRUTALSAM may visit this site, without himself ever having purchased a console.

Re: Talking Point: Will You Be Buying The Last of Us 2?

Hengist

@Royalblues No need to apologise to me, and for what it's worth, your original comments didn't come across as you being a jerk, when I read them. Instead, it came across as someone who knows their own mind, and is not afraid to politely state it (even when in a potentially hostile environment). Those are character qualities which I admire in a person.

Re: Talking Point: Will You Be Buying The Last of Us 2?

Hengist

@Royalblues Same here. A mate of mine kept raving on about how brilliant the first one was, and that I had to buy it. I struggled to finish it, due to also finding it really boring.

I notice that you mention that you haven't liked any of Sony's cinematic titles, this gen'. I can go one better; I haven't liked the majority of Sony's exclusive offerings this gen'. God of War was more God of Bore for me, and I never finished it. The same goes for that one where you play as a girl killing dinosaur robots (I can't even remember what it's called, it made such an insignificant impact). However, I did enjoy their previous Killzone game at launch.

When I read people defending the PS5's slower spec', when compared to the competition, by stating "It's all about the games", "Sony exclusives are the best thing since sliced bread", etc, etc, it has zero effect on my purchase decision making.

Re: PS5's Price Could Be Undercut by Xbox Series X, Analysts Suggest

Hengist

@Belekai
That's a well written response, which I appreciate. I acknowledge that I cannot present 'speculation as fact' (i.e. the cooling system), and it wasn't my intention to do so. I was basing my observations purely on what Mr Cerney had said. The only reason, at this stage, for this unique approach to cooling that I can think of (and this is just my opinion), must be related to financial considerations and keeping the target price of the unit competitive.

Again, on a personal level, I'd much sooner have those extra CPU cycles available (for just in-case scenarios), than artificially capped at a lower rate. As for energy consumption. I know that it's not politically correct, but to be honest that's never been a factor for me to consider (I even leave the tap running when brushing my teeth).

Re: PS5's Price Could Be Undercut by Xbox Series X, Analysts Suggest

Hengist

@Neolit 'don't go changing the subject with cross-platform games then'

I didn't change the subject? I was referring to cross-platform titles and I acknowledged in a reply, to Fuzzymonkeyfunk, that first party titles would see the benefits of the PS5's SSD.

There was no changing of my subject.

Re: PS5's Price Could Be Undercut by Xbox Series X, Analysts Suggest

Hengist

@Belekai ' There is a reason why Mark Cerney spent so much time on it in the deep dive'

Yup, and that reason was because there wasn't really anything else good to say about the system. I imagine that his reveal script was written/edited, in-conjunction with the marketing department before he went on stage.

My favourite was the subject of overheating. Instead of a utilising a robust cooling solution (which would raise the price), they instead decided to just slow the system down when it gets too hot. The marketing department must have loved that one.

Re: PS5's Price Could Be Undercut by Xbox Series X, Analysts Suggest

Hengist

@Fuzzymonkeyfunk 'all cross platform games will have to be coded to the slowest part of both next gen consoles'

They will be coded, initially on PC architecture, with all inherent data transfer timings originating from that benchmark. Then they will be adjusted to fit the architecture of the console platforms.

___________

'but first party games on both should shine on each respective strength'

I totally agree with you on this. First party games is where any opportunity to use the new PS5's SSD will shine.

Re: PS5's Price Could Be Undercut by Xbox Series X, Analysts Suggest

Hengist

@Neolit ' but if you spend an afternoon reading about PC architecture and understand what it means to have data storage that doesn't lag behind your RAM and CPU, you will see what I mean.'

Thanks for the reply. I have two degrees in Software Engineering and have been involved in the video game industry (my name can even be seen in certain end-game credits), so I think that I do understand what you mean. However, if people think that the SSD on the new PS5 is going to make cross-platform games perform better (actual, not technical) on that system, when compared to the new Xbox's SSD, then I still remain smiling.

Re: PS5's Price Could Be Undercut by Xbox Series X, Analysts Suggest

Hengist

@Mince 'Ooooh the speed of its SSD haha, sorry but I'm continuously reading this and it just makes me laugh...'

I agree. It too brings a smile to my face when I see this 'feature' continuously mentioned. However, if it also 'currently' provides a reason to keep the PS fans happy, then I guess that everyone is smiling... Which is nice.

Re: Talking Point: What New Trophy Features Do You Want on PS5?

Hengist

@GamingFan4Lyf 'I actually don't like what Trophies/Achievements have done to game design. I feel like there should be more interesting ways to pad a game with content rather than what get's used for Trophies/Achievements.'

I 100% agree with you. It's a pity that the poll didn't have the option: Remove them.

Re: SnowRunner - Glacial Haulage Sim Is Snow Joke

Hengist

Thanks for the review/article.

I note that in the summary you mention 'cumbersome controls', but for a review concerning a driving title, I didn't see any mention of wheel support (or lack off) in the main body of the article.

So I'll ask. Does it feature wheel support?

Re: Talking Point: Can PS5 Make Sony the King of Indie Games Again?

Hengist

Q. Can PS5 Make Sony the King of Indie Games Again?

A. I hope not. Indie games (with not much else), during the first year of PS4, nearly made me sell the console. If PS5 is aiming to be another Indie crap flagship, then it's gonna be one more reason to only buy the new Xbox, instead of my current plan of buying both new consoles.

Re: Reaction: DualSense Reveals Sony's Unrivalled Ambition for PS5

Hengist

@JJ2 My third controller, that I previously mentioned to replace the DS4 which came with the Pro, has also developed a fault. The right trigger no longer has any analogue pull on it. It's either on or off, it's a digital trigger now (Disclaimer: No cats were involved in the development of this fault).

I guess that I'm just unlucky with DS4's, as my old 360 controller is still going strong on my PC.

*Edit: P.S. As for the original DS4 which came with the base model (the one that now has the rubber grips on the thumbsticks), the right trigger has an issue on that, as well. The return spring on the trigger, no longer fully returns.

Re: Reaction: DualSense Reveals Sony's Unrivalled Ambition for PS5

Hengist

@JJ2 'one more reason to use grips.'

Seriously, for a moment. My first DS4 which I got with my base model PS4, had the rubber coating on the sticks disintegrate within 12 months. I also got some grip/covers to remedy the situation.

The DS4 that I got with my Pro, didn't have that issue. However, it did develop a fault where whenever I held down the left trigger, the up movement on the left thumbstick would also activate. I had to buy a new controller to solve that one.

Re: Reaction: DualSense Reveals Sony's Unrivalled Ambition for PS5

Hengist

'DualSense Reveals Sony's Unrivalled Ambition for PS5'

I totally agree with the latter half of the quote above. Sony's ambition for PS5 is 'unrivalled', as nobody else is making the PS5. As for the former part of the quote and the DualSense being responsible for revealing that ambition, I'd disagree with that.

Re: PS5 Is Attracting an Obscene Amount of FUD Right Now

Hengist

@Jaz007 ' Consoles are the majority market, not PCs.'

I'm afraid that I'll have to disagree with you here.

__________

'and devs have every same reason to not use Xbox’s “extra power” as Sony’s “extra power” so that argument doesn’t make a lot of sense.'

I don't want to appear as rude, but the above didn't make any sense to me. It's not a case of using the 'extra power' of one machine or the other, in the context of cross-platform development. Most CP devs will use unique specific features of a system when it's easier, or there's a problem with performance which means they have to spend extra time in utilising that resource to get it up to par with the other platforms.

Re: PS5 Is Attracting an Obscene Amount of FUD Right Now

Hengist

@jdv95 'if more raw power was more important that how come we see not a single dev or non biased gaming media saying how much of an advantage the new xbox has over the "weak" ps5? '

Because they don't have to. Everyone already knows that it's going to be the more powerful of the two machines.

______________

'none because they realise that the SSD is the more important upgrade next gen. which the ps5 has the better one.'

Which won't matter one tiny bit when it comes to cross-platform developers who aim for the majority market which still contains mechanical hard drives, or CP titles where a PC SSD is used as the benchmark for data transfer streaming timings.
