@Americansamurai1 Very true. The 360 had a whole year headstart which made it easier for developers to quickly cash in with a "Next-Gen" 360 port. A lot ppl bought the 360 out of desperation for the next best thing or out of frustration from Sony's fumbling at the time. It's very interesting how many echo chambers exist that trash Sony yet it still is one of the top best selling consoles alongside Nintendo.
@Americansamurai1 @Elthesensai That theory on it selling so much because of it being a DVD player was true but only for the first two years. By 2004, you could buy a portable DVD player for around $50. Then the tech boom where you could watch DVDs on your PC and elsewhere. Can't forget how massive PS2 was talked about and advertised after the PS1's success. I recall in 2001 the demand for PS2 being so high, it was being sold for $1,000 on ebay. Sounds familiar right? Once the price dropped for PS2, it was easier to have multiple PS2s in one household like the Nintendo Switch. Plus that game library is quite massive with underrated gems still being talked about today.
@Ken_Kaniff You're right, from my memory I recall the article at launch only mentioned a portion of new PS1 titles. But now that you mention it I do remember now how the PS2 & PS3 titles were simply moved from PS Now service as part of the "additional games". Didn't help that they used the wording "Up to 340". And now I see we have around 435 in total in the store, 117 under classic section (PS1, PS2, PSP) and over 300 are PS3 steaming.
I rescind my previous statement then, and only hope they continue adding games that include the rare titles stuck on PS3/Vita store before they shut the servers down.
@Cashews With the exception of FFVII Remake previously being free on PS+, I agree with you. My main point was if Square's titles from PS1 & 2 gen were apart of the Premium tier, it'd bring in more subscribers to that tier. Not expecting them to do that at all though without Sony writing a big enough check for that.
@Ken_Kaniff Yeah, it would probably help ease concerns if they plan to go further than their projected 350 or so limit that they first announced with the service. I personally am itching for Dino Crisis from that one Italian Sony blog list that had to remove it within a few hours way back. I agree that it's improved and there's more reason to look forward to what they add next.
@Ken_Kaniff To be fair, when comparing Premium to the digital games still only on PS3's PSN service, the Premium tier is not one I'd recommend at the moment. But it is much better now than previously. There's decent games on there but it still needs more. I understand why it's like this which is due to the sad side effect of no longer supporting the Cell processor where that entire PS3 classic list is held that I'm not going to whine over it, but understand the backlash. So developers are remastering to get them back on current platforms now with a nice addition to save states + rewinding feature.
The main complaint I would have is it's still missing other big hit sellers and household names. The games that really define the PS1 & PS2 era are lacking. Classic Crash, Spyro, Dino Crisis, Square games to name a few. They're getting there, but it's via drip feeding comparable to Switch's service. It did take backlash for them to make it a priority now.
@Ravix Nah, bud. It's easy to note this as a "you problem" when looking from the other side. This is more of a cultural thing. Just as us North Americans have terms that are used negatively over on the other side that we're encouraged to be mindful of before using. He already explained how scheme is generally used here.
"Color Schemes" over here is only talked about during an optional elective class during youth no more than a couple years if not involved in the art field. "Nifty little loyalty scheme" at first glance even with your full example reads as a "nifty little loyalty scam" to my North American upbringing. Personally, I've been in enough European central internet spaces to be aware that if something sounds off, I better double check before responding. This just a simple thing the brain does with going through the most used connotation over the few exceptions.
Just don't be surprised to see any complaints in the future from it. Best to not kick anyone for not being aware, especially when the site catered to North Americans before with certain articles. Just kindly mention it and move on. 😄
It's cool to see more third party tech become backwards compatible. I use a nice blue retro fighters controller for my PS2 but could use this as a backup for my PS1 in the other room.
@SillyBoyJudas This is one of those UK/US slang term issues. Over here "scheme" is a derogatory term meaning "plan with deception/evil intents" but in the UK region "scheme" is just a regular term of description without any negative connotation. I'm with you on them using a different term (since they've previously catered to outside regions with other terms), I don't expect them to change it since it's been addressed multiple times by now.
@NotSoCryptic Dunno, Horizon has the potential for an enjoyable multiplayer experience just on the scale of the land itself and bombastic boss fights with teammates. Plus the racing sequences as well could fill in the variety of modes. Guerilla also has experience from the Killzone franchise with an addictive multiplayer experience. So long as there's variety and it blends with what the game considers canon.
The problem with Uncharted's multiplayer inactivity happened from a combination of poor maintenance and as you mentioned UC4 had missing modes that kept it replayable. UC2 towards the end of its cycle became flooded with people taking advantage of the glitches rendering certain maps unplayable experiences. The 2011 PSN hack, unfortunately, clashed with their final planned patch / double exp date for its swan song. So when the service returned, it was left in an unfixed state and no patch added leaving most moving over to UC3. Then you got the PS3/PS4 crossover and incompatibility of PS3 games, plus UC4 lacking the same variety of modes as UC2 & 3 had. So overtime people moved onto other games if they didn't want to go back to PS3 to enjoy UC3 again until their servers finally closed after. I would play UC2 & 3 with my buddies almost daily from 2010-2016. UC4 however, we played for a few months before moving on to other games.
If anything, Uncharted missed out on having a co-op multiplayer experience with its story campaign considering Drake had AI partners along the way.
@LiamCroft Something else to add to this brilliant guide. Metal Gear 1 debuted on MSX and is the definitive version that's available via MGS3. The NES version came after MSX for the western release but with a number of revisions in order to fit inside the NES cartridge (cut levels and infamously the change in the final boss).
I believe the NES version is also going to be included separately? If so, has enough differences to be in its own category and would tie in with Snake's Revenge as an alt storyline. But, this tibit of info is up to your discretion. It's nice to read an article that doesn't neglect the games prior to Metal Gear Solid.
It's not the first and certainly won't be the last instance of fan fiction, art, the like from a Final Fantasy title. Or any game with conventionally attractive characters.
@pharos_haven MG1 refers to the first Metal Gear game, which came out in 1987 before MGS1. MGS1 Is the first Metal Gear Solid game that released on PlayStation in 1998, it's the 3rd canon game released in the series.
Nice. I had this digitally downloaded on my PS3 (through PS+) but without a PSP it just sat pretty for years until I got to transfer it to my Vita. Hopefully, I can just download it without paying extra on PS5 since I already own the license.
Such a shame. While SCV had a very disappointing single player experience, and lack of modes that were in previous entries the character creation and multiplayer is one of the best. I would even rate the creation and design to be even better than SCVI. If only the online playerbase was still active, I'd be jumping back in again with my creations.
Best thing about these type of articles, it really brings out people's ignorance in comments (as hard as they try to blanket it). Anyway, from seeing the locs, I knew there'd be backlash. Looks fine to me as much as Prince's design did in Warrior Within. But I don't usually play modern 2d side scrollers so that was my main turn off from this title.
FFIX was the first FF I beat without a guide assistance as a kid and still enjoy replaying it every now and then. I'm curious with how they'd treat the remake before getting fully excited for it. I'd prefer if they don't do the whole plot dementors of FF7R if any major changes were to be done.
Honestly, when judging Naughty Dog's track record into multiplayer. Factions was great, and so was Uncharted 2 & 3's multiplayer.. But Uncharted 4's multiplayer being their most recent was lacking in content compared to their previous multiplayers. That was 7 years ago and perhaps their vision of multiplayer experience was outdated from today's standards and they realized they need to rework things and add more.
Also noting their fiasco with Part 1's PC port. They don't want another underwhelming look. I'd say this was a good move if they want to keep that quality standard to let it cook more or just scrap it.
@Snake_V5 He's probably under an NDA and so far hasn't denied it. Konami did state the game will feature the original voice characters so its a safe bet he'll be in it.
@Keyblade-Dan It's a good thing you mentioned Shadow of the Colossus for an example since the 2018 remaster fully expanded the world to PS4 scale while retaining it's feel and improving all camera and controls. I wonder how if the forests will be scaled as massive as well.
Eh, I need to see actual gameplay before fully judging. All I see is just some young adults sneaking in to prove a point by taking back. Lots of games do this concept but is this gonna be an FPS or third person? Need more info.
@Stealthieone Considering the demograph here, you're not going to find many here who see or even want to understand your point. Heck, even in a past article when the actress said she doesn't pay attention to the racist comments that happen to be directed towards her, somehow people twisted it as if she was the sensitive one. You can only laugh at the ignorance.
@thefourfoldroot1 There's been renewed hope with Konami recently opening a new studio. Especially with the new Silent Hill games, the upcoming Suikoden remaster and of course, their "promise" for an update on the Metal Gear licenses. Question is when, but every "insider" wants to be the first one correct on calling it.
@Vil You're not wrong to believe that. Technically, PS5 has the "better" backwards compatibility in sheer library size alone with the amount of PS4 titles alone eclipsing the amount available for Xbox.
Xbox tends to get credited with "full backwards compatibility" when it's mainly a portion of original Xbox, Xbox 360, & all Xbox One titles. By that logic, PS should keep the crown since they expanded to a portion PS1, PSP, and PS2 titles digitally. Without crediting the previous PS3's native compatibility.
But, what Xbox does deserve credit for in this department as you mentioned was being able to download previous compatible Xbox titles off the disc and it upscaling for superior visual and framerate. Only a portion of PS4 titles get that 60 frame unlock like Final Fantasy XV on PS5. It sure would've been nice to stick my PlayStation discs from before PS4 era in the PS5 and have them playable without rebuying it again.
@kyleforrester87 Depending on the time of day, there's a decent active amount of players since the new version came out. I haven't had to wait as long now before starting a match.
The PS1 was my first PS console and I never wanted to leave the ecosystem since. The exclusives and strong library of unique third-person action-adventure games have always kept me around. Like Nintendo's consoles each one has a special era attached when looking at their best sellers.
@B-I-G-DEVIL They definitely would've garnered positive reception if the entire Classics section store on PS3 was ported over to PS4 & 5. To think back then the PS2 digital library on there felt miniscule. But since that store has security issues and the PS4 isn't capable of handling PS3 compatibility they're in this crunch with following the Nintendo Switch format of redoing them from the ground up and releasing them piece by piece overtime since they want to deliver Premium titles on PS4 & PS5 platforms day one.
Seeing how Square Enix realized that they needed to remaster all their ps1 classics with Chrono Cross and Konami with the upcoming Suikoden series.. I'm expecting Dino Crisis from Capcom someday.
@DrGonzo Unless there was an edit, I only see "PS4" listed in this article, unless you mean the PS5 is where they reviewed it? The plus is that the original FFIII finally got a console release after 33 years outside Japan and they added something new for the younger gamers to join in with these versions. Everything FF on PS has been stuck on the PS3 thanks to the lack of backwards compatibility. As for this version it's just a shame that they refuse to restock anymore physical PS4 copies since that would really bring in more sales.
Cool. The way I see it, it's 2023. The whole "gay forcing things agenda" was such a 2004 argument. Also find it weird to just assume a lady character that doesn't reciprocate any of her immediate male comrads' affection or flirting automatically means she prefers to be eternally single and "strong". She just happened to not find the right person yet.
Aloy literally was ostracized from birth from her appearance and then was immediately worshiped as soon as she proved herself against all odds like a flipped switch. Then in FW after going off she formed a wall that her allies were patient enough to show her that she doesn't have to be alone. So it's a natural progression that she would open up to someone now. Also, she was cloned from Elizabeth who was in a relationship with a woman so I guess the preference was also cloned.
I expect in the sequel those who didn't play the DLC will have the same reactions to Aloy's preference. Just like those who had a problem with Ellie's in TLOU2 despite Left Behind DLC already confirming it since PS4 owners can't play this until they get a PS5.
Easily one of the most overlooked in the series. IV & VI get talked more over this one. I've played this one before when it was ported to the PS1 with FF Anthology as a kid. Now thanks to the boosts I have enough time to grind up all the jobs and still get the challenge from boss fights.
@get2sammyb Yet, not surprising. Can only pity those that have a problem with this character's look and/or have twisted how positively they're described.
Those who say "Just don't buy them" and are able to ignore these microtransactions should also have no problem with ignoring those who are vocal about their dislike of them. I'm good without paying for these.
FFXIII wasn't as bad as many made it out to be, but it was quite stripped down from having to fit on DVDs for the Xbox port back then. XIII-2 was surprisingly fun, but that story was just too wild to take serious on many points. Lightning Returns I never finished. It didn't help that as serious of a character Lightning was, the two spin-offs followed with marketing ads of her as a fashion model. That's quite a choice, overall.
I wouldn't mind revisiting the trilogy should they ever get it remastered. Chances are it will be in the future, since SE approved Chrono Cross to finally get remastered today because of the lack of backwards compatibility.
@Meehanuk_1987 I concur with others on FF6, but FF4 & 5 are also great entertaining ones.
It's a confusing history, so buckle up. What happened was FF1 came out in the US in 1990, 3 years after it did in Japan (1987). Between 1987 and 1990, FF2 and 3 were already released in Japan. I would assume for marketing purposes it was "better" seen at the time to just release FF4 as "FF2" in the States in 1991, the same year as in Japan as the SNES came out then. You would think FF5 would then release as FF3 right? Nope, that was skipped over for FF6 as FF3.
It wouldn't be until the PS1 when they released the original FF1 & 2 as FF Origins in the States with new FMV intros. FF4 was bundled with Chrono Trigger as FF Chronicles. FF Anthology had FF5 & 6 in the States while in PAL regions, Anthology has FF4 & FF6. Still leaving FF3 out until the Nintendo DS remake. So technically, this is the very first time the original FF3 will be available physical overseas.
I just wished they still had another batch of PS4 physical copies to sell. I can't help but wonder if these titles down the line will be offered on the "PS+ Premium Classic" tier since most were ported to the PS1 (albeit, after FF7 & 8).
Yeah, it's retro by years alone. But I'm more akin to the "classic" label since I can boot up a PS3 game without having the initial "oof, this looks rough". thought.
Graphics used to age as fast as milk back then. It was easier to see the PS1 and PS2 as an "old console" after 5 years. Not to mention the previous transition from 2D to 3D within 5 years. Now we have people labeling God of War Ragnarok a "PS4 game upscaled on PS5" and it still looks damn good on a 10 year old console. It's just a little irony that the PS4 has longer loading times than PS1 did.
That's the problem when Platinums become a focus on earning straight away when the game comes out. It's only been a month since release. It's no more of a pain than Ghost of Tsushima's where both games encourage you to "clear the fog" to uncover the secrets and a like to earn the trophies.
The Folio Reveal pages were the most tedious and annoying for me to collect, with searching high and low in the Hogwarts castle to see which ones I missed for the 150 spamming Revelio every step I went let alone the rest of the world. I'd take Merlin Trials over the Revelio pages since they at least pop up on the map if you wander nearby and are easy to complete each.
The game does well with spelling out how many collectibles you currently earned and how many are possible for each section of the map if you zoom out all the way on the world map. With only the landing platforms and popping balloons being something I needed to look up for their precise locations.
Cool, now they just have to fix that blasted missing moth by the Sphinx bug and the world map counter incorrectly displaying 149/150 field guide pages (the flying page by Greenhouse somehow isn't counted). The Sphinx Moth bug at least has a workaround that can take multiple attempts before its fixed.
Surprised at there not being a separate article about their "PlayStation Playmakers" initiative and it's only being casually mentioned in here... then again, looking at some comments maybe this is for the best. For some reason celebrities aren't welcome in the gamer space.
As for the design, the PS Faceplates feels very tacked on with the placement of the logo.
I have two PS3s still plugged in. The original 60GB from launch is in my bedroom and the 120gb first slim edition is plugged in the monitor next to my PS5. I don't boot them up very often but I have no reason to part from them, especially with the modding community extending the life of some PS3 online titles like Killzone 2. Plus, there are some PS3 gems I never experienced that I've been collecting while they're still on the "cheap" side.
I'm willing to guess these updates will still come as long as they're running the PS3 servers for streaming games.
@zupertramp I don't see the problem with Joel having PTSD or showing gratitude for once. That's just another trait to his complexity, since they still kept the core of him having poor communication issues, being stubborn, and bottling up emotions. I get more dad energy from this version of Joel versus the video game.
The problem likely factors with the pace of the show, at times it feels slow or sped up. Joel opens up when there's downtime, there's been more downtime compared to the videogame where there is consistent action and being on your toes. Naturally, Joel in the game masks as a psychopathic superhero when in action which happened to be majority of the game. In the show, because there hasn't been as much action so he's far more approachable because there's less of a threat to lower his guard. But he's still stubborn in his decision making when presented with a problem.
We just didn't see that until TLOU2 with all the good times he shares with Ellie after the events of TLOU, he does in fact have a vulnerable and emotional side. He was "blubbering and crying" in the beginning of TLOU so I don't have a hard time believing him capable of having emotion offscreen in the game version of TLOU. This show basically is serving as a redemption arc for Joel's exterior and will no doubt give more fuel to dislike Abby when it gets to that point.
It's too bad not enough remakes do this with including the original game inside. The only game I could think of is MediEvil where it unlocks the PAL version of the original game when you collect all the souls as a reward.
Their case of bringing up the TV show is weird.. saying because Sony's generating a lot of money from TLOU TV show it can totally overcompensate the lack of CoD, and thus the deal should go through. If anything, Sony could strike back and say how Microsoft has majority of PC gamers on their side with their computer division and implementing Gamepass in electronics generating way more revenue than Sony's TV, movie and electronics put together.
Actually, what was most odd was them tweeting while watching their show as commentary. Like one of those 'in the shower' ideas, not thoughtfully considered. But hey, free advertisement to Sony. I can't wait till this mess is over.
I too was expecting same sort of reveal of Bill to Ellie/Joel. Thinking maybe this was why Bill turns even more bitter with having to live on alone. Especially with how in the game both Frank and Bill grew to detest each other and separate bitterly. But then I saw how calm Bill was with the wine. Maybe he switched the vials and gave Frank pure sugar so he could live on? But no way could Frank live on longer in his condition. Then it made sense this change, Bill already served his purpose in the series and didn't make a return in Part 2 where he may have likely met his end alone in between that time. This was a better wrap up for him, albeit tragic all the same but at least it ended happier for him. What a beautiful episode.
One take away that sort of hit me later was Frank's request for a wedding to Bill. Massachusetts the state this took place was the first out of all 50 to legalize same-sex marriage in 2004 and all this ish went down in 2003 where it wasn't fully legal in all states until 2015 and was seen as a laughable concept then.

@Petto They'll have to remaster Tekken 3 from the ground up without Gon for this to happen. There's a rights issue with that character.

Nice. I had this digitally downloaded on my PS3 (through PS+) but without a PSP it just sat pretty for years until I got to transfer it to my Vita. Hopefully, I can just download it without paying extra on PS5 since I already own the license.
Re: SoulCalibur 5 Will Be Axed from the PS Store's Stage of History Next Week
Such a shame. While SCV had a very disappointing single player experience, and lack of modes that were in previous entries the character creation and multiplayer is one of the best. I would even rate the creation and design to be even better than SCVI. If only the online playerbase was still active, I'd be jumping back in again with my creations.
Re: Apparently Some People Hate the New PS5, PS4 Prince of Persia Game
Best thing about these type of articles, it really brings out people's ignorance in comments (as hard as they try to blanket it). Anyway, from seeing the locs, I knew there'd be backlash. Looks fine to me as much as Prince's design did in Warrior Within. But I don't usually play modern 2d side scrollers so that was my main turn off from this title.
Re: After a Year of Silence, the Final Fantasy 9 Remake Rumours Have Re-Emerged
FFIX was the first FF I beat without a guide assistance as a kid and still enjoy replaying it every now and then. I'm curious with how they'd treat the remake before getting fully excited for it. I'd prefer if they don't do the whole plot dementors of FF7R if any major changes were to be done.
Re: Metal Gear Solid's PS5 Master Collection Adds Two More Titles
It'd be grand if this has a physical release, just to add to my current Metal Gear collection.
Re: Rumour: Naughty Dog's Troubled The Last of Us Multiplayer PS5 Project Was Sniped by Bungie
Re: Virtuos Assisting Konami on Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake Development
@Snake_V5 He's probably under an NDA and so far hasn't denied it. Konami did state the game will feature the original voice characters so its a safe bet he'll be in it.
@Keyblade-Dan It's a good thing you mentioned Shadow of the Colossus for an example since the 2018 remaster fully expanded the world to PS4 scale while retaining it's feel and improving all camera and controls. I wonder how if the forests will be scaled as massive as well.
Re: Fairgame$ May Be Sony's Most Tone Deaf PS5, PC Title to Date
Eh, I need to see actual gameplay before fully judging. All I see is just some young adults sneaking in to prove a point by taking back. Lots of games do this concept but is this gonna be an FPS or third person? Need more info.
Re: Now May Be the Best Time to Play Forspoken on PS5
@Stealthieone Considering the demograph here, you're not going to find many here who see or even want to understand your point. Heck, even in a past article when the actress said she doesn't pay attention to the racist comments that happen to be directed towards her, somehow people twisted it as if she was the sensitive one. You can only laugh at the ignorance.
Re: Rumours About PS5 Exclusive Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, and Castlevania Send the Web Potty
Re: PS5 Firmware Update Has Fixed an Overlooked PS4 Backwards Compatibility Issue
Re: Fall Guys Finally Gets Level Editor on 10th May as Part of Season 4
@kyleforrester87 Depending on the time of day, there's a decent active amount of players since the new version came out. I haven't had to wait as long now before starting a match.
Re: PlayStation Beats Nintendo, Xbox to Another Sales Milestone
The PS1 was my first PS console and I never wanted to leave the ecosystem since. The exclusives and strong library of unique third-person action-adventure games have always kept me around. Like Nintendo's consoles each one has a special era attached when looking at their best sellers.
Re: Sony's PS Plus Subscriber Count Is on the Rise Once Again
Re: Mini Review: Final Fantasy V Pixel Remaster (PS4) - Oft Forgotten RPG Deserves Another Chance
Re: Everyone's Talking About the End of Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores on PS5
Re: Mini Review: Final Fantasy V Pixel Remaster (PS4) - Oft Forgotten RPG Deserves Another Chance
Easily one of the most overlooked in the series. IV & VI get talked more over this one. I've played this one before when it was ported to the PS1 with FF Anthology as a kid. Now thanks to the boosts I have enough time to grind up all the jobs and still get the challenge from boss fights.
Re: Meet the Actress Behind Aloy's New Ally in Horizon Forbidden West's PS5 DLC
@get2sammyb Yet, not surprising. Can only pity those that have a problem with this character's look and/or have twisted how positively they're described.
Re: Resident Evil 4 Fans Aren't Exactly Thrilled with Microtransactions on PS5, PS4
Those who say "Just don't buy them" and are able to ignore these microtransactions should also have no problem with ignoring those who are vocal about their dislike of them. I'm good without paying for these.
Re: Almost Every Mainline Final Fantasy Game Will Soon Be Playable on Current PlayStation Consoles
Re: Next-Gen Shooter Neo Berlin 2087 Is Baffling PS5 Owners
Hot concept, but needs more time in the oven
Re: Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Brings 1 Through 6 to PS4 on 19th April
Re: Soapbox: Hold On, Is the PS3 a Retro Console?
Re: Hogwarts Legacy's PS5 Platinum Is a Pain in the Ass
Re: Hogwarts Legacy PS5 Patch 1.05 Has Gameplay, Performance Improvements, Fixes Quest Bugs
Re: Sony and LeBron James Join Forces with Limited Edition PS5 Accessories
Surprised at there not being a separate article about their "PlayStation Playmakers" initiative and it's only being casually mentioned in here... then again, looking at some comments maybe this is for the best. For some reason celebrities aren't welcome in the gamer space.
As for the design, the PS Faceplates feels very tacked on with the placement of the logo.
Re: What Year Is It? There's a New PS3 Firmware Update Out Now
I have two PS3s still plugged in.
Re: New PS1 Classics Can Be Bought Off the PS Store
@BlaizeV meanwhile Ps5 version has it at 6-7GB, I can't imagine how it'd balloon that high even if it is from stretching the games' original ratio.
Re: TV Show Review: The Last of Us (HBO) Episode 6 - Brothers Bond as Pace Quickens
Re: Atelier Marie PS5, PS4 Remake to Include PS1 Original in Digital Deluxe Edition
It's too bad not enough remakes do this with including the original game inside. The only game I could think of is MediEvil where it unlocks the PAL version of the original game when you collect all the souls as a reward.
Re: Activision Blizzard Exec Says Last of Us HBO Proves Microsoft Acquisition Should Go Ahead
Re: TV Show Review: The Last Of Us (HBO) Episode 3 - Television At Its Finest
