Re: PS4's Price Will Drop to $199 in 2017, Predicts Pachter

JaxonH

Well, why don't you share your thoughts on this @rjejr I know how big a fan of price cuts you are

@XCWarrior
Well let's pray that doesn't happen then, since as gamers we only lose when a console launch gets "killed" Great for these companies lining their pockets, not so great for gamers looking to diversify

Re: Valkyria Revolution Invades the West on PS4, Vita Next Year

JaxonH

@WanderingBullet

I mean, the core game hasn't changed. Valkyria Revolution isn't the core game.

It's like releasing Hyule Warriors and complaining they changed the Zelda formula. No, they never touched the core Zelda formula- the core Zelda formula is the same as its always been. Hytule Warriors isn't a core Zelda game. Valkyria Revolution isn't a core Valkyria Chronicles game.

You wouldn't accuse Square Enix of changing the Final Fantasy formula when they released Dissidia, right? Or accuse Atlus of changing the Persona formula when they released Persona 4 Dancing All Night? So why would you accuse Sega of changing the formula for their spinoff?

Re: Valkyria Revolution Invades the West on PS4, Vita Next Year

JaxonH

@Cowboysfan-22 @AFCC @Wazeddie22 @NoxAeturnus @Furtin

As I understand it, Valkyria Revolution is meant to be a spinoff entry of sorts. They're not changing the strategy of the main series, they're just making a different type of Valkyria game (who knows why, there's so many reasons developers do spinoffs- my guess is to draw more people into the fold with the action).

But ya, no worries. The core game hasn't changed, this just isn't part of the main line of Valkyria Chronicles games.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 147

@BranJ0
Well it's not as good as the ones you've played, but, you have to understand its a remake of the very first FE on NES. So for people who've played that one, ito a real treat. When that same original soundtrack from the first game kicks in, revamped from the 8-bit chiptune track, it's impossible not to grin from ear to ear.

And, it's still a great game. The battles are still 2D sprites so it's not like Awakening or Fates, and it's a tad basic at that, but it's the original story of Marth, and that holds a special place in FE canon.

The real winner though is the other DS entry that only released in Japan, Fire Emblem New Mystery of the Emblem: Heroes of Light and Shadow (FE12 for short). It's a remake of the 1st SNES Fire Emblem (3rd entry in the series) which itself was actually also a remake of the 1st entry on NES. But in FE12, they added an all new Part 2 to the game and reworked the script, so the first part is still different than Shadow Dragon and the second part is brand new. It's also the first game to add a casual mode (no permadeath), even though Awakening is often mistakenly credited for bringing the option to the series.

I think it's still a fantastic game, particularly if you plan to play Fire Emblem 12 afterward (which can be played on its own but I think it's appreciated more after experiencing the original events of Shadow Dragon). And if you do want to play FE12 it's 100% translated to English. I play it on my 3DS and it's a real gem.

But ya, if you're gonna play Shadow Dragon, it's good on DS/3DS but I like it on Wii U in dual screen mode. It works perfectly because it's a DS game and was designed with the maps on the bottom screen, which translates to the GamePad. The TV displays the personal stats page of whichever unit you hover over or alternatively the overall map with blue/red dots for units, states victory condition and number of units on each side, and summarizes the unit you hover over in the corner so you can still see which weapon they have equipped.

All FE games are must owns for any Fire Emblem fan... I own them all and there's really no exception- all of them are worth owning and playing. Especially for $10

Re: Poll: Does The Last Guardian Dazzle After a Decade?

JaxonH

The game is gorgeous. Plain and simple. The art style makes it even more beautiful. I really dislike the notion of realism being the only way to impress. Man I get sick of realism all the time... realism realism realism realism realism... it's all anyone ever seems to want anymore.

Anyways, I do have one major gripe. The camera. It is absolutely HORRID. And not just some of the time either... it's horrid ALL the time. It's just crap camera controls, plain and simple. If it would just control like a normal video game it would be perfection... seriously, this game is a masterpiece but it's a flawed masterpiece. It's hard to enjoy its brilliance when you're constantly fighting with the camera.

Re: Dragon Quest Heroes II Brings More Monster Mashing to PS4 Next Year

JaxonH

Oh I am SO getting this day one.

@rjejr
Oh man, the Wii U gamepad battery life was horrid out the box. I bought the gig capacity extended battery from the online store... best money I ever spent. I get 5-8 hours on my Gamepad now, which is basically what a Dualshock 4 gives you.

I'm used to 7 hour battery life. Between my gamepad and DS4 both around 7 hrs on average, it's not a big deal. I do keep a spare controller docked though, so if one runs low I just dock it and grab the other. Easy peasy.

Re: Sony's Shuhei Yoshida Expects Nintendo Switch to 'Cover a New Market'

JaxonH

@get2sammyb
Ya, but Vita wasn't really up to scratch for console quality games. The games graphics were good for a handheld, but just couldn't compare with actual consoles. The analogs sucked and didn't click in, there were only 2 shoulder buttons, and the screen was too small for actual console games. Toss in the hanky framerates and pop in most console ports had, and of course touch screen controls mapped for buttons, and it all combined to make a very suboptimal experience,

And I think when you have an underwhelming experience like that, its easy to think that you don't really want those games on the go. When in reality, you just don't want a significantly subpar experience. If the screen was larger, if the unit wasn't missing any buttons or clickable analogs, if the graphics were at least moderately comparable to current gen consoles, if the performance was acceptable, if it had far better games than just Borderlands 2 and a knockoff Uncharted from a 3rd party studio- if it had actual, current generation games that are highly rated like Final Fantasy XV or Dark Souls 3 or the Skyrim Remaster...

I think a person might realize that the games on the go was never the issue, it was the quality of the experience.

That aside, having console games on the go is just an added bonus anyways. The great thing about Switch is that it will still provide all the exclusive games you would normally get on a Nintendo console- playable on a TV. It'll basically offer everything a normal Nintendo console would, plus everything a normal Nintendo handheld would offer. No matter who you are or how you like to play your games, Switch has something to offer everyone (of course those who enjoy playing games on TV and handheld will get insane mileage out of the device)

Redemption...

I was worried the game wouldn't be good. I'm so glad to see all this positive feedback. Shadow of the Colossus is by far my favorite PS2 game ever made, and I will definitely be slotting this in for New Years after I beat Final Fantasy XV (and before Jan 20th when Dragon Quest VIII releases)

Re: Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash Sounds a Lot Like Sexy Splatoon

JaxonH

Eh, this is more like Call of Duty with anime girls than it is Splatoon.

Splatoon was never about targeting opposing players (although kills are an important part of strategy, since eliminating an opponent prevents them from painting turf for a good 10-15 seconds). The game is about painting territory, not about getting the most kills.

@PlaytendoGuy
F-Zero has always been it for me. Nothing else feels right. It's the cylindrical tracks and super responsive steering. All the other games make you skid when you turn, and I never liked that.

That said, in the absence of F-Zero these last 10-15 years ever since the pinnacle of the series dropped with GX, I've grown to enjoy Wipeout, loose turning and all.

I'll be buying this for sure.

@Fight_Teza_Fight
Ori is truly a masterpiece, but the Halo games are great too, and what's nice is you have access to all of them- all 5 main entries plus Reach and OSTD, not to mention Halo Wars and soon, Halo Wars 2. Gears is also a masterpiece, particularly Gears of War 4, and it's great that you can play all 4 main entries plus Judgement. And Forza Horizon (which is brilliant)- all 3 games are accessible.

I also think X1 has a number of other worthy exclusives, particularly when you account for the 360 games you can play such as Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon, or the wide span of 7th gen games like Elder Scrolls Oblivion or the Mass Effect trilogy.

I think with Switch, it could actually provide more time to game because you don't have to be at home to play it. Or maybe play in another room while someone else is watching TV. You'll never have enough time to play every game, even on just PS4. But I don't think it's about plugging gaps in your gaming schedule, I think it's about expanding your selection so that you can cherry pick the absolute best the industry has to offer. You're not expanding the quantity of games you play, you're increasing the quality. So instead of playing these 2 masterpieces from PS4 and 2 good games from PS4 in a given time frame, you can play 4 masterpieces- 2 from PS4 and 2 from Switch.

@rjejr
How are you liking Final Fantasy XV? I think it's a masterpiece, truly right up there with Xenoblade Chronicles X, maybe even better (though not as awe-inspiring exploring the world, that's one thing Xenoblade X can't be topped in).

Re: PSX 2016: Sony Boasts That the Best Games Are on PS4

@get2sammyb
"but PlayStation has — and always will — speak to me the most"

Everyone has a favorite. Even multiconsole gamers tend to gravitate toward one more than the others. And right now, I'm gravitating most toward PS4. That hasn't always been the case- for a while there it was Xbox One and before that, the 3DS and before that, the Wii U. It comes and goes in cycles- depending on which games are releasing for which systems.

I just wish gamers would, despite having favorites, also appreciate everything else on offer rather than clinging to one and marginalizing the rest. Because when a person only plays games on one platform, it's really easy to believe that platform is the best. And maybe it is, but it's hard to know that for sure without a frame of reference. A lot of games Sony fans think are good, Nintendo fans would call mediocre (Wipeout, Parappa, Knack). And a lot of games Nintendo fans think are good (Lego City Undercover, ZombiU, Hyrule Warriors) Sony fans would call mediocre. It takes a person who plays both to have a balanced perspective.

In the end, it doesn't matter which console has the best library of games. I think what matters is squeezing as much enjoyment out of each platform as you can. And if it's 90% Sony and 10% Nintendo/Microsoft, so be it. And if it's 90% Nintendo and 10% Sony/Microsoft, so be it. Everyone is different and everyone is going to have a different opinion on which platforms offer the most. Which is fine. As long as people understand that no single platform has everything to offer. #multiconsolegamermasterrace4life 😃

Re: Reaction: Sony Puts on a Perfectly Paced PSX 2016 Presser Packed with PlayStation Goodness

JaxonH

It wasn't mind-blowing or anything, but it was definitely a good little presser. Wipeout is a day one, The Last of Us pt II was the highlight of the show, and a decent Uncharted expansion too, and some other goodies like Marvel vs Capcom.

Wipeout should have been in VR though. What were they thinking? Are they planning any more support for VR or is it relegated to Vita-land already after just a month?

Re: PSX 2016: You'll Play As Ellie in The Last of Us: Part II on PS4

JaxonH

I really really liked The Last of Us. Never understood all the excitement over Uncharted- it's a good series and all, it just... it's the gameplay. The freaking gameplay. But The Last of Us? It worked perfectly. Their style of gameplay didn't work so well for an adventure traversal game but for survival horror it was immaculate. Puts Resident Evil to shame!

And I am most definitely excited for this. I imagine this is what most other people felt for Uncharted 4. This is my Uncharted 4 then.
