Re: Oh Dear, The Last Guardian Delayed into December on PS4

JaxonH

@adf86
It's not delaying the game to fix bugs that people are criticizing, it's the consistent lack of foresight when announcing release dates the first time around.

This is beyond ridiculous. If even we, the fans, fan predict that just about every game is going to get delayed 3-12 months, it's high time the developers start predicting it too, and factor that in to their schedule. And if it's far away enough they can't say for sure, then it's too early to be announcing a release date to begin with.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend - Issue 134

@kyleforrester87
Also, looking at that chart it may seem there's no rush to jump from yellow to green sharpness, but what the chart doesn't tell you is yellow actually only does 1.0X damage when your hit lands in the center of the blade. If the tip or base of your weapon connects, it's 0.75 damage and it wears down the sharpness like you did 2 hits, so you'll wear down to orange twice as quickly. That's why the jump to green ASAP is crucial, and later on the jump to blue ASAP is also crucial.

There will be other things you'll want to keep in your item pouch down the line but, here's the basics that you'll want right now. A guide on what you should be aiming to take with you on every quest.

things to keep in your item pouch on every quest

  • BBQ Spit (to cook raw meat into Well Done Steaks)
  • Mega Potions x10 (or just Potions for now if it's all you can get)
  • Antidote x10 (for curing Poison status)
  • Well Done Steak x10 (for stamina)
  • Whetstone x20 (for sharpening)
  • Pickaxe x5 (for mining ore)
  • Bug Net x5 (for catching bugs)
  • Dung Bomb x10 (for driving off monsters when fighting 2 at once)
  • Shock Trap x1 (for trapping monsters)
  • Pitfall Trap x1 (for trapping monsters)
  • Tranq Bombs x8 (for capturing trapped monsters)

I also recommend choosing the "Adept" hunting style. It allows you to do this crazy bushido barrel roll dodge when timed perfectly. It basically gives you the equivalent of Evasion +2 skill, which is one of the most envied and coveted end-game skills there is, and you get it right out the gate with Adept. It's even better than Evasion skill because the Evasion +2 skill just gives you 0.4 seconds of invincibility, whereas the Adept dodge gives you 0.4 seconds invincibility to execute the bushido dodge and then total invincibility for the duration of the animation. It's crazy good, and I see no reason to ever use any other Hunting Style, though aerial style does have some good benefits also. Just practice rolling, all the time rolling. Attack, attack, roll. Etc. you'll probably inadvertently pull off the adept dodge just by rolling through attacks, and once you get the timing down you become insanely dangerous.

The name of the game is "don't get hit". A lot of new players just wanna go on a rampage attacking, rather than looking for openings, getting a few attacks in and rolling away. I'd really recommend watching a few videos of veteran hunters to get a feel for proper hunting techniques.

Also, skills play a huge part of the game. Usually +10 points in a given skill activates it, and -10 points in a skill activates the negative skill. There are also tiers sometimes- like with Tetsucabra, a full armor set grants 10 points in health which activates the skill "Health +20". If you can then increase your points to 15 you'll activate the 2nd tier of the skill called "Health +50" which completely maxes your health bar. You can do this by crafting decorations at the smithy (like a +2 Health gem, 3 of which will take you from 10 points to 16, therefore activating the second tier of the skill). You need an open slot on your weapon, armor or talisman to equip a gem. More slots the better because more slots = more gems = more skill points = more skills/better skills. Likewise, if you have -10 points with a negative skill activates, just craft a +1 gem and equip it to take the points from -10 to -9, so the negative skill no longer activates. You'll want to craft full armor sets because each of the 5 pieces adds a few points in the same skills. Mix and match and you won't reach 10 points in anything and therefore won't have any activated skills.

Also, always eat before each quest. Always always always. It can increase your health bar, grant temporary skills (like more defense or insurance in case you cart- carting means dying by the way- referring to the "kitty cart" that carries you back to base- you're allowed 3 carts per hunt).

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend - Issue 134

JaxonH

@kyleforrester87
Absolutely. So, the 1 star quests are just kind of there to teach you here's how to gather, here's how to carve, here's how to do this, do that. For each level of starred quests (1 star, 2 star, 3 star, etc) there are certain "Key Quests" required to do to unlock the Urgent Quest which is how you graduate to the next level. So basically, you don't have to do all the quests. Just the keys, which can be found here http://monsterhunter.wikia.com/wiki/MHGen:_Village_Key_Quests

Once you unlock the Urgent to fight the Great Maccao, you get your first taste of a real monster hunt. Granted it's easy and obviously not anywhere close to the insane monsters you'll be fighting in higher ranked quests. So, you'll want to find a weapon that suits your playstyle, and then learn it like the back of your hand. There are tutorial quests for each weapon, which let you fight a Great Maccao in the arena with that weapon so you can test out different ones. I recommend something easy to learn at first, probably nothing ranged or slow (ranged weapons require "gunner armor" which has half the defense as the normal armor counterparts).

Maybe Long Sword or Dual Blades- those are noob friendly. Switch Axe and Charge blade have dual forms, you use the lesser blade to charge up and then switch to a powerful axe, so those are fun too but a little trickier to learn. And Insect Glaive is great but you're constantly having to shoot out this insect at the monster to get buffs, which can be aggravating and frustrating for a new player. Ranged weapons are usually for more experienced hunters, and slow weapons aren't usually the best choice right away. Hammer and Hunting Horn are fantastic but, you've got to deal with slower animations and smaller window of timing to land hits as a result.

You'll want to farm an armor set right away. Pro Tip- don't ever buy armor sets- they suck. Same goes for weapons. You want to craft- everything you do you need to craft. So I recommend farming the Tetsucabra armor set. Tetsucabra is relatively easy to farm, and his armor set is perfect for low rank because it grants a skill which maxes your health bar (also grants tremor resistance). You'll hunt Tetsu as your 2-star Urgent into 3-Star rank. So just run through the 1 and 2 star Key quests, get to Tetsu and then farm him for his armor. Also be a good time to craft a new weapon as well.

So, download the DLC packs asap- talk to the housekeeper in your room or do it from main menu. Lots of potions and stuff for free. You'll wanna learn how to craft certain items- like potions (potion = blue mushroom + green herb) and you make it a Mega Potion by then combining honey (Mega Potion = Potion + Honey). You'll also want to carve raw meat from the big herbivore dinosaurs roaming the areas. Buy a BBQ Spit and keep it in your item pouch for quests. Then, once you have some raw meat carved, you use the BBQ Spit to cook it to well done steaks, which replenish your stamina. This is absolutely crucial to learn. Should be a quest that teaches you this.

Watch your weapon sharpness. It goes red > orange > yellow > green > blue > white. Right now you'll want to get a weapon with green sharpness ASAP. Probably won't happen til at least Tetsucabra but still, make it a priority. In the meantime, keep your yellow sharpness at all times. You see it drop to orange you should sharpen right away. Use whetstones to sharpen. You can gather whetstones out on quests, and they're a necessity to have.

Untitledimage hosting 10mb limit

I'd recommend watching Gaijin Hunter videos to learn whatever you need. Especially how to use whatever weapon you choose. Here's his YouTube videos for each weapon. Most every veteran hunter uses Gaijin Hunter as a vital information resource.

https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDR3ta7VqKryXOcFwWv6Di8PmJqtYocI3

And Polygon put a nice guide together for new hunters, it's a little overload with information but, you can find some good info in there.

Re: Will PS4 Pro Improve Games on Traditional 1080p HDTVs?

JaxonH

I'm sure there's some level of benefits but, unless you wanna go full 4K setup there's really not enough to warrant a full console purchase again. If I had a 4K tv, then, maybe, it would appeal to me a little more.

I'm still waiting to hear if this Pro will have room for 15mm HDD instead of just 9.5. If that was the case I'd seriously reconsider.

Dude....

We gotta discuss these preconceived notions and predisposed bias that is absolutely wrecking your gaming life (and you don't even know it).

Open up your mind... like you did at Woodstock in the 60's. I can't imagine Link in a high school but that's because Link's story is set elsewhere. This one is set here, and that's the appeal. It connects to your long-lost and forgotten youthful teenaged self.

I used to have the same kind of bias myself- anythjng turn based, anything Japanese... wasn't interested. Alls it took was one game to start a domino effect of shattering my preconceptions. Let this game tip the first domino for you. I give you Jaxon's Blessing.

I do not and will not buy a game with any of the above on the case. My gaming collection is 100% marketing-free original cases. Now, I don't mind Game of the Year editions provided they're not "Platinum Hits" or whatever else also.

Re: PS4 Pro Is a Bargain and Will Sell Very Well This Christmas, Analysts Agree

JaxonH

I totally agree it's a great deal. The diehards will upgrade regardless but for anyone who doesn't own a PS4 yet, there's really no reason not to get the Pro for $100 more.

I may consider one next year at Christmas after I have PSVR and NX, but then again Scorpio will be coming out then and if PS4 still doesn't allow externals, I know which upgrade I'll be investing in (the one that can install the most games).

Re: Japanese Ad Combines PS4 Slim and Persona 5, the Result Is Mental

JaxonH

Persona 5, the Game of the Generation for PS4.

@rjejr
You hyped for Persona 5? Did you even buy Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE? As big a FE fan as I am and as much as I loved that game, P5 is gonna be better. Heck, even Persona 4: Dancing All Night is the greatest rhythm game I've ever played and the best Vita game all year.

Anything with Persona in the name is pure gold. I hope you're ready by Valentines Day.

Re: Poll: Will You Be Buying a PS4 Pro?

JaxonH

Don't get me wrong- I have nothing against the PS4 Pro. I rather like it.

But my priorities go like this:

1 New platforms with new games I can't currently play without it
2 Revisions of existing platforms with zero new games

So PSVR is where my first $400 is going, and NX is where my second $400 is going. Once I own all the new platforms that bring new games that I wouldn't otherwise have access to, then I'll look at revisions for existing platforms.

Re: Mass Effect: Andromeda Gameplay Is Finally Here, Running on PS4 Pro

JaxonH

@rjejr
Negative.

PSVR $500
NX $400
Switching game collection to X1 $650

Even Daddy Warbucks is saying enough is enough.

"Bigger HDD"
Haha good one, that 1TB will be a huge upgrade from my maxed out 2TB drive We need 4-6TB models and they come with 1TB, as if that's some kind of solution to the issue. I maxed 1TB in my first 12 months.

I'm a relatively easy going gamer, don't really complain about much. But one pet peeve of mine is limited storage capacity. I'm literally begging to buy more PS4 and Vita games and they won't accommodate me. I own all 3 consoles and both handhelds and the only 2 I have this issue with is... PS4 and Vita. I gave up, I did. I bought a 4TB external for X1, and I'm selling off 30 of my PS4 multiplat games to help fund purchasing those games on Xbox and clear space on my PS4. From now on, instead of PS4 being my "go-to" console, it'll be X1. PS4 will be for exclusives only, just like Wii U. But with VR coming and patches for all the games to be "PS Pro compatible" I wouldn't be shocked if I still run out again before then gen is over.

But it's a great option if you don't own one yet. Xbox One S is too, which I also chose to skip. I did order a custom controller though. Just shipped.

Re: Reaction: Shrewd Sony Looks to Continue Market Domination with PS4 Pro

JaxonH

@Kirk
Wow, I'm a little surprised to hear you say that.

I'll say this- I'm excited for NX. Of course. I mean, it's new games to play, and new way to play them. And I love Nintendo games. But PS4/X1 are really great consoles to have all the same.

And as odd as this may be to say, it's the smaller games that are the reason for that. Ori & the Blind Forest is one of the greatest games I've played this generation. Bastion, Transistor, Hyper Light Drifter... Those kinds of games. There's good retail games too- just, not a whole lot I'm super hyped about. Dragon Age Inquisition was excellent though. And Valkyria Chronicles is still the best game on PS4.

I've always favored PS4 over X1 simply due to exclusives and UI. But once I maxed out my upgraded 2TB internal HDD, after just 2.5 years, I decided to switch all my games over to X1. Bought a 4TB external and bam, good to go. When Scorpio releases, just plug it in the back and games are transfered.

And, I won't say I'm hyped for PSVR, but I am cautiously optimistic. It could be great. Find out soon enough.

Re: PS4 Pro Confirmed, Launches November 2016 for $399

JaxonH

This is great for non-PS4 owners, but if I spend $400 on a console it's gonna be one that I don't own already, one that actually offers new games I can't play. PSVR has new games, it'll get my money, NX has new games, it'll get my money. This offers me nothing I can't already play, and the upgrades seem marginal at best.

Re: Store Update: 6th September 2016 (North America)

JaxonH

Got Trails of Cold Steel yesterday, and realized Y's I & II was remastered on PSP and flipped out cause I've been wanting those games forever yet 3DS can't run them cause the TG16 VC is non-disc games only.

And went ahead and bout the other 2 Y's games on PSP. And realized I never installed Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 so I played some of that...

When is Transistor releasing on Vita already? And Hyper Light Drifter? And all these other awesome indies that just fell off the Vita radar

@Ralizah
Watch the Ace Attorney Honest video. Ace Attorny: Monster Hunter is all I'm gonna say

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 133

JaxonH

@AFCC
To be frank, no, it's not. Nothing can compete with Monster Hunter. The animation frames are just so perfect and the monsters look like living breathing animals that could feasibly exist, and everything is just so perfect I don't think we'll ever see a game that tops MH. Especially with the forward progress they've made with MH4U and Generations.

That said, I think God Eater is a fun game and probably the best you're gonna get without actually playing MH. I couldn't stand Freedom Wars, and Toukiden didn't really do it for me either, but God Eater has piqued my interest. Only MH type game to ever do so that's not actually MH.

Id buy MH4U or Generations over God Eater any day of the week if I had to choose, it's not even up for debate. But if that's not an option for you, or if like me, you just like diversifying, then ya, it's a solid game. I like the anime art style and the story, which definitely help it stand out.

Re: Hands On: PlayStation VR Continues to Impress in Epic Preview Session

JaxonH

@get2sammyb
RIGS I'm happy about. Battlezone Im not sure on. But yes these are model examples. I forgot about Druveclub, but is that actually going to be available at launch? I didn't buy it on PS4 but maybe for VR.

Thing is, those are all "quick match" type games. I'm waiting for an actual campaign, know what I mean? It doesn't have to be 60 hours, but you can't deny the overwhelming supply of shorter tech demos. And not that I'm inherently against those, because I'm not, but they can't be the majority of what VR will offer.

The Order. There's a perfect game that could have been used. Despised on consoles and yet it has that cinematic appeal, it's relatively short.... it's perfect. You get what I'm saying? It doesn't need to be 60 hours to be an actual full game with campaign.

Re: Hands On: PlayStation VR Continues to Impress in Epic Preview Session

JaxonH

@adf86
I don't see wearing the headset as being an issue. Either it's comfortable to wear or it's not. And if it's not then we've got bigger problems.

If they expect people to use it in cinema mode and watch 2 1/2 hour movies wearing the headset, then there's no reason you can't play extended sessions of games wearing the headset too, right?

To me it just comes across as a new technology that they have 50% faith in and it nobody is willing to fully back as of launch. A bunch of developers will dip their toes in with a demo game, but nobody is really willing to put the full brunt of their support behind VR. Not yet anyways.

It's different for sure, but I don't see why it should be treated any differently as a consumer product. It's a device that can play games- if you're going to spend $400 base price on a device that can play games you sure hope that it comes with some serious games worth playing.

I like the idea of some of these smaller games like Batman, but why not a full Arkham game built for VR? There's really no reason not to have full games- so why don't we? I mean I know why- I think it's them not really knowing if it's going to succeed so they want to mitigate their losses if it doesn't.

Re: Hands On: PlayStation VR Continues to Impress in Epic Preview Session

JaxonH

@BranJ0
Exactly! If this were any other console launch, it would be doomed from the start having a line up like this. Why is it that they think it's totally fine to launch with nothing but tech demos?

If we can't even get one single fully robust $60 VR game now at launch, and not some port of a PS4 game either- I'm talking built ground up for virtual reality- what makes us think that will ever see one in the future?

And that is my biggest fear- it launches with nothing but tech demos and that's all we ever see for the duration of its lifespan. As a result nobody buys it, and those that do buy it such as myself will grow bored of it, and then they quit making games for it.

We need full games exclusive to the platform, just like any other console out there would need. Where are these games!

@Ralizah
Aw man I loved the tennis racket! Come on, that was fun

Re: Review: God Eater 2: Rage Burst (PS4)

JaxonH

This will never replace Monster Hunter for me. I'm playing MH Generations right now and man, it's gotta be the greatest game ever made!

That said, I'm digging God Eater all the same. I bought this on PS4 which came with Resurrection, and I'm buying both on Vita, and the physical copy on Vita from UK which I'm importing. So sick of digital releases here in NA.

And that's just how this genre goes. Takes time to learn. Best played with an iPad in lap with multiple wikis open.

Re: Review: Madden NFL 17 (PS4)

JaxonH

Will never buy a sports game if it's

1) annual
2) has real rosters (because then it's outdated in a year)

Give me something classic, or fantasy, that's not so realistic and "seasonal"

Re: Video: Release Your Rage Burst with God Eater 2 PS4 Gameplay

JaxonH

What???

EU gets physical Vita copy but not NA?? Do they not comprehend that our 64gb memory cards ran out of space three years ago???

Ok, if I import the PAL version from the US, can I play online with other people in the US who have the NA version? And will my cross save functionality still work with an NA version of the game on PS4?

Re: Battlezone Demonstrates Yet Again Why It's a PlayStation VR Must Own

JaxonH

Procedural generation? Really?

I am so sick and tired of this lazy cop out developers use to avoid actually having to design something intelligently. "Eh, why design a well constructed environment or enemy placement? Just write some code that makes it all appear randomly. They'll never know the difference"

PG is a plague of modern gaming- a cancer slowly eating away at masterfully crafted levels and environments and hindering game potential.
