So let me get this straight. You're saying because some impatient fans couldn't wait for an official English PS4 release, NISA is more-or-less just applying that translation patch and calling it a day. Meanwhile on other platforms where that translation patch can't be applied, they're actually porting and enhancing the game. So if they hadn't released a fansub, the PS4 version would've gone through the same localization enhancements? I guess that'll show those fans to like something so much?
@stvevan because that's how salaried positions work, there's nothing to whistleblow. They are not protected by overtime labor laws so the company is not legally required to temporarily grant pay raises during crunch.
As of 2019, only 8% of game devs have reported receiving extra pay for crunch. What they don't mention is how many of those are actually contractors, who would be hourly and thus legally required to receive overtime pay (in the US), nor do they do a breakdown of which of those devs receiving compensation are in Europe, which I suspect has some better working condition laws than the US.
Regardless, these devs being based in the US, it's pretty safe to say there's about a 92% chance they aren't being compensated, which should be overwhelmingly enough to conclude they aren't, unless someone comes out and says they are.
@themcnoisy why should scheduling a massive paycut make it ok? That's the thing with crunch, they're not paid hourly so they don't get any extra compensation. At best it's a massive paycut, at worst it's unpaid work, depending on how you want to combine it with normal working hours.
I appreciate the PS5 only indication. Let's me know I can go ahead and play the PS4 version without worrying about having to come back to it later after DLC. Then I can wait for all DLC to release before playing the PS5 version.
@JJ2 he apologized for tweeting about it, not that he exploited people's desire to keep their jobs to get ultra cheap labor or any of the physical or mental fatigue he caused his employees making them work 100 hour weeks.
I want to see a Last of Us x Uncharted. In the first act Drake steals a priceless artifact from some indigenous people. When he returns home it turns out that unleashed a curse that caused the clicker fungus infection. I guess the ending will be Joel and Drake randomly meet up and Joel kills Drake (for a reason wholly unrelated to killing the world).
Wow, insane that so many gamers have so little respect for the people who actually make games that they think devs should be paid less and work 100 hour weeks.
@KaijuKaiser how about people should care because they're not getting paid for it? Or rather, by participating in crunch, the employees are effectively slashing their own salaries and worth to pieces.
Let's say they're paid $80K a year to work 40 hours a week. Well at 100 hours a week they're still just getting $80K a year. They're showing the company that they only value their own time at like $15/hour instead of $38/hour. Why should the company even consider a raise, clearly they're vastly overpaying what the employee values themselves at. Why should other companies consider hiring them at their current salary either, apparently they're fine working for peanuts, so $40K a year without crunch should be fine, right?
If they're really willing to work 100 hour weeks, maybe they should consider a job at like Starbucks or something instead. They'll be making more.
Crunch simply doesn't work. Years ago we did it at my job to make deadlines. Everyone agreed it was awful, so the thinking shifted to realizing that if a deadline slips a week or two, it's not the end of the world, next time you'll have more experience to plan better how long it'll take. Now nobody is crunching and productivity is way higher.
@tenthAvatar check out Genshin Impact. Especially in Inazuma, the PS4 version runs at like 5fps while the PS5 version is 60fps. The PS4 version is practically unplayable with so many dropped frames and lost inputs.
@torne that seems kinda scummy on the publisher's part. "We'll fund you, but only if you raise $1M on your own because we don't want to fund you that much."
Because he knows so many people will complain if he reveals they're planning for the DLC. A lot of people just don't understand how management of this sort of project works and think it's sacrilegious to even think about DLC before release day.
@Pete_Stooge doesn't seem like it's that hard anymore. Cross-gen games have consistently seen much higher player counts on the PS5 version than PS4 for a long long time now.
@SerJosh97 so it's ok for people to say the best value for MS games is getting them on subscription but you're not allowed to say the same thing about Ubisoft games?
Besides, arguably the best way to own a game is on disc, yet one of the top reasons for that is so you can sell it. 10% of people never finish a game, even less will replay it, making ownership pointless. It really seems like ownership is not very important to the average gamer.
@Dr_Luigi that also doesn't mean a native PS version. That's your interpretation. In fact, very rarely do people use the term "same version" to refer to two different versions (Xbox version and PS version). It would've been much more natural to say "it will release on PS" if they meant there'll be a native PS version. They even say it'll be "available" not that'll it'll release or launch...
Statements like these are always very carefully worded so that they're not technically lying.
@Dr_Luigi because it's so big is exactly why they'd want it exclusive to GamePass. To drive subscriber numbers.
Minecraft is different in that it's not a new game every year, so that wouldn't be worth the bad PR of removing it from other platforms. But COD won't be removed, just the new games will be on GamePass.
we are committed to making the same version of Call of Duty available on PlayStation on the same day the game launches elsewhere
Means: "we're totally willing to let GamePass onto PlayStation so those gamers can stream COD. So, Sony, do you also want COD to be playable through a PlayStation?"
@SerJosh97 War Theatre Blood of Winter originally required DLC for the plat (for one of the game modes), but was later patched. まもるクンは呪われてしまった! ~冥界活劇ワイド版~, Eye of Judgment, and The Hungry Horde all require DLC for some of the base game trophies. With Hungry Horde you can downgrade to the 1.0 version not to require the DLC anymore though. So it does happen, and it isn't always fixed.
@SerJosh97 I already said it, so I guess I'll say it again. I get PS+ for the monthly games, not for playing online. If they stop giving out the games then I'll stop subscribing. So yeah, the games are what I'm paying for. I don't need online to play my single player games.
@get2sammyb true, but these are the high level numbers people are going to see if they go back to the older reviews to try to compare to decide which version to get (unless you're planning to do an updated review by today's standards, not sure how often if ever push square does that).
Phantasy Star IV is one of my all time favorite games, so I'm interested to get back into the Phantasy Star universe. Somehow I feel like this won't live up to my expectations though.
To be honest, this game looks like it's pretty big, so probably won't get around to it any time soon. Too many other games to play.
@SerJosh97 I'm paying for the games. Playing online can suck an egg. $1.67 (actually $0.83 since I bought on discount) for a random game is a pretty good deal, even when some aren't that great.
I'm disappointed in you Push Square community. Where's all the hate like when Tencent was taking a similar stake in Ubisoft? I thought you guys couldn't stand it when a Chinese company invests in the betterment of a game dev. Guess the rules are different when it's your favorite dev, huh, then it's all ok.
@Justin113 woke has nothing to do with politics (ok, disregarding that a many politics and laws are discriminatory, as it would be used with a video game isn't political). It means awareness of discrimination, especially with regards to race. If you're woke then you're against discrimination. There's nothing political about being a decent human being.
The people that use woke derogatorily use it to simply mean diversity, as if that was a bad thing. The existence of non-white people is not a political agenda, it's simply a fact of life.
@Sakisa some digital checklists are better than others apparently. Other people do like doing everything a game has to offer and don't consider it a waste of time. I'd say not taking advantage of it all is just a waste of money, so everyone to each their own.
@Mythologue you can't claim 100% completion without getting all the trophies, as that requires doing everything in the game and trophies are a part of the game. The fact that there's an integration with the console OS doesn't make it suddenly not part of the game.
@Sakisa have you not played many games in the past couple decades? They're all just checklists in fancy skins. Even just beat level 1, beat level 2, ... look at that, a checklist.

For comparison, Push Square (Sammy every time) scored it:
PS3: 10/10
PS4: 10/10
PS5: 8/10
So it would seem PS4 is actually the best version (unless you need new features like accessibility).
