@themightyant Your mistake is that you think only third person shooters are influenced by GTA. The large scale switch from regular corridor games to open worlds began with GTA.
The Xbox series S part is the scariest part. That console (from a GPU/RAM point of view) is slightly more powerful than PS4 Pro, which essentially means any game targeting that console could be released on a last gen console with minimal sacrifices (unless it requires fast data fetches or high CPU load). I hope Microsoft lets the series x and s launch parity abomination die.
@Panic_Attache Actually no. The total number of consoles and PCs has remained largely the same, and the average attach rate (number of games per consoles sold) is largely the same. Even then, current spendings are mostly in a few titles (FIFA, Fortnite, etc) and not distributed over a large number of titles.
I was just thinking to myself, back in PS2 days, longest games like GTA San Andreas took around 30 hours to complete and 70 hours to 100%. A game like God of War took around 5-8 hours to complete. Not to mention that due to hardware limitations, artists and game developers didn't have to spend much time on details as the hardware was incapable of rendering them.
How much did games cost back then? $40
Adjusted to inflation that's around $70.63 today.
Nowadays games are much much larger, a linear game like The Last of Us Part 2 easily takes around 30-40 hours just to get to the ending and the game studios are in an arms race to add the most breathtaking details to their games, bloating the development time and money exponentially.
How much games cost today? $70, i.e similar to how games were priced back in early 2000' adjusted to inflation.
Unfortunately games development runs on money and money comes from investors. Investors see the numbers I just mentioned (stuff like return on investment, how long it takes to even out, risk factors, etc) and it's obvious why we see such stuff to happen.
The industry needs the AA saviours more than anything else right now.
The fact that Sony has almost no current gen only games 5 years into PS5 gen compared to previous generations is a reflection of this point, as game development times have bloated so hard and the risks are too much that games are either cancelled or take ages to come out. And at the end the of the day, we see more of the tried and tested games like the 98th installment of COD, 245th installment of FIFA, new ridiculous skins for Fortnite and the like.
What we really need IMO is smaller games like Helldivers 2, Returnal and the like.
Edit: typos.
BF2042 started as a steaming pile of trash, but boy did they turned it around. As a really long time BF fan (played every single title since BF2), I can fairly say that IMO no BF can match the gunplay of BF2042. But the redemption came too late. Hoping for a proper BF to be announced.
Gears of War is amazing! Actually one of the last games that allow for proper split screen play (great for a gathering), with the split screen working in all modes (PVE, PVP, campaign). I have some of the beat gaming memories of my life playing Gears of War. The original trilogy is one of the highest rated trilogies of all time, don't sleep on this absolute gem.
@TheFakulty They never said that. They said that starting from Jan. 2026, new additions will focus on PS5 and PS4 games will appear with less frequency. That's it
I've built a PC just to play Gears of War again (and retro games), but I'll be more than happy to but the series for the 3rd time and play through them with my PS friends where I play the most. Love the series, you would really play it if you haven't already (especially the original trilogy).
46% percent down despite the 30% increase on PS5... I think gamepass has to experience at least a 40% surge in users to recover the losses here (assuming that the profit margin is almost twice the game, or the userbase is almost twice the COD userbase which I highly doubt).
I have a fairly serviceable PC (RTX 4070 SUPER), yet I have ZERO problems playing 30 FPS games. Hell, I've played through Gears of War trilogy last month and had a blast (the framerate is a mess). A good game is a good game. Really don't understand the gamers that can't play a game due to 30 FPS cap.
One of the basics of a product debut is: make sure the product is good and delivers, then spend twice the development cost on marketing. It might sound a bit dumb at first, but the more you think about the logic behind it, the clearer it gets.
@kappasig390 You're in for a great ride. It's a story driven, linear game with great combat and a fascinating story. The graphics were really good for its time (UE3 game, for better or worse) and the futuristic environments are lovely.
Despite what the comments might have made you think (Forza Horizon and Starfield). Gears of War easily ranks as one of the best game series one ever played. I haven't played the last two entries, but the trilogy man... It was PERFECT. The sound of shotgun kills and headshots... Perfection.
I'm glad, despite what the vocal minority might make you think, Gears of War (at least so far) is a distant first. The Gears of War (especially the original trilogy) is one of the best game series of all time.
Not sure if it's me being nostalgic, or if it's by chance that this game clicked with me, but it makes me wonder: why on Earth nobody's talking about Gears of War?! I haven't played the last two entry, but to me the original trilogy is easily one of the best trilogies in the history of videogames.
Actually so good that I would happily buy a gamepass just to play them or buy them separately at full price on Ps5. Hopefully the Gears of War trilogy remake proves to be true and we get a remade (or remaked?!) trilogy on PS5.
@thefourfoldroot1 I'm sorry but: 1- The topic is about software, not hardware 2- Yes, first party releases might be a small fraction of total releases, but they rank among the best selling and most played games. Not just that, having first party games is like having salt in chips. Salt might comprise just 0.001% of the total weight of chips, but remove it and most people wouldn't enjoy having chips. Just like that.
@saffeqwe You simply boil down the pricing to the number of games, disregarding all else. It's like buying 7 wrecked 1987 Toyotas for 200,000 pounds and calling it a great deal.
@RainbowGazelle it's due to higher sensitivity to minor changes in electrical currents in controllers which allows more precise and responsive controls. The downside is that it's also more sensitive to faults.
So many people got disappointed then. PlayStation showcase is supposed to show stuff that wouldn't be shown otherwise in any other showcase. But it was a third-party and multiplatform showcase, and MOSTLY in CG.
The I've thing that cannot be excused or justified AT ALL is the state of communications or marketing. I can fairly say that this is by far the most horrible PR policy I've ever seen from PlayStation. To be honest even worse from 2005-2007 era. At least they communicated whatever the hell was going on. It's like things happening in random nowadays, or we need to rely on rumors or low level gossip to get any idea what's going on.
In my opinion they should pass a law, or whatever that mandates companies to release the resources necessary to host the game servers on any PC by players, then shut down the servers.
@Richnj Yeah I believe they should be this way as well! I take broken personal opinion rather than a single digit summarizing the whole experience. That's why we have split community around some games like Death Stranding.
Remember back in the day scores were split into different categories?
Graphics, Story, Gameplay, Controls, etc?! I firmly believe that system was far far superior to the single score we (unfortunately) use today. That way each game should have a Progress/Unlocks/Grind or something like that and leave the decision to the players based on their own priorities.
@get2sammyb
I believe they would not interfere work any of the BUNGIE's games. But they can offload Sony owned games to them. For example Bungie creating a new Resistance. This way, no Bungie game is exclusive, but they've developed exclusively for PlayStation. Anyway the income alone is worth it.
