Re: Talking Point: As PS5 Turns 3, How Are You Feeling About It?

Ryu_Niiyama

I’m mostly using it to play PS4 games as I skipped the Pro and only have like 7 PS5 games. Overall it’s been underwhelming but that isn’t a bad thing. Lets me focus on the backlog or picking up old games I didn’t realize I was missing. This is probably my last PlayStation for a while. As my PS5 library looks like it will be really small (if I hit 40 games I will be surprised… I have never had such an issue getting to 10 games before this gen) so not a good ROI.

Switch has more games I want to play, gamepass gets me a huge library to cover whatever doesn’t end up on Switch (or demo if it does), so PS is mostly exclusives or if a game got ported so badly to switch (and not on xbox) that I throw up my hands and buy it there. Still a functional console so while indifferent I don’t dislike the console. Also lovely 4k blu ray player.

Re: Insomniac Confirms Primary Marvel's Spider-Man Moving Forward

Wow you can tell how many people only read comics as children or did their absolute best to ignore the entire spiderverse. Pete hasn’t been the only Spider for DECADES. And Miles (originally from a universe where Pete is dead as a doornail mind you) has been Spiderman for over a decade. Honestly this is a long time coming. Games used to embrace comics and all their different characters. Instead of forcing the same retread a million times. Read the comics, you will be surprised how much has changed in 60 years.

Yes!!!! Love Miles! Also need Pete and MJ to get to work on Mayday Parker so by the time the 5th game rolls it will be Spiderwoman. Do it do it do it! Gotta say I am looking forward to seeing Miles as an adult as the series progresses. I hope he juggles young adulthood better than Pete does.

Pete has several games, time to start catching up with the comics. There are so many Spider people, and we have seen Pete’s story a million times with a million interpretations. I could use a Jessica Drew game or even Julia Carpenter pre Madame Web. Really glad to see non ensemble games finally really pulling from comics. That was why I loved games like x-men legends and MUA.

Re: The Sims 4's Newest PS4 Expansion Sounds Kinda Grim

@HeeHo because they are a necessary evil. Decades ago the goal was rent being about a third or a fourth of what you earned (for some it was even that much off their take home pay which is amazing) which meant if you were fiscally responsible you could still save and live decently. Now for many it is half or more even if they live in poor quality housing/areas.

But between corporations lowering housing inventory by making them expensive rentals, house sellers holding out for high over payments because housing is overvalued right now due to constrained inventory (among other things), much of the housing inventory being in poor shape for what you are paying (why take care of a building when you will get tenants no matter what), interest rates being high, homelessness being a crime in many places which forces people into making often dangerous decisions, builders are either building rentals mostly (because that’s where the money is) or just making building new inventory insanely expensive it is harder than ever to live somewhere let alone buy a place. Most zoning laws and high build price also keeps house supply low. The nice/fair landlords have to spike prices to stay in business due to high property taxes so even if they mean well they are adding to the problem. Since inflation is having a party and wages are stagnant, people can’t keep up. But you gotta live somewhere so you have no choice but to take it. So you slowly drown.

Many of the first time buyer programs aren’t enough because you get out bid by people with cash (not mad at the people that have money, but corporate investors can go to outer space with no suit) or the only thing you can afford is in an unsafe area. Most can’t move and afford to keep their jobs and those that do drive up home prices as they bring their cash to the area (not mad at them) and sellers smell the money and raise their prices. I do find that funny though because that was a quip people used to say: “move somewhere cheaper then”, knowing that many couldn’t and keep their jobs. But remote work tested that and many people with high paying jobs that lived in high cost of living areas moved to low cost of living areas and could live like royalty.

Re: The Finals Opted for AI Voices Because 'It Gets Us Far Enough in Terms of Quality'

Ryu_Niiyama

For small devs this could be the make or break point. Especially since Voice acting is considered standard/basic. The devs provided the other sounds almost like oldschool devs in the late 90’s early ‘00’s did for games. So to me it seems like they couldn’t afford voice acting. If it means more devs can see their games see the light of day…well I am not mad. Also this could mean that games made by devs that can’t afford localization can use AI to both translate and voice their games. Lots of great potential here. I would like to see this explored further.

Re: Former PlayStation Boss Shawn Layden Says It's 'Criminal' Industry Isn't Properly Preserving Games

Ryu_Niiyama

I semi disagree. At least with older games. In the 80’s and 90’s (and technically the 70’s) a lot of games were made with the idea that these items wouldn’t last beyond their source console (or arcade).

Licensing (and theft), companies going under, poor source code retention, floaty IP ownership puts retro gaming (and sometimes modern gaming) in a sticky situation. Most things can be resolved by money of course (and companies can legally use roms of their IPs)but it is a two part problem. If companies spend the money to not only preserve games but make them available to modern consumers (and imo these are two different things) then the cost of that work has to go somewhere. The consumer market that “loves” old games on modern systems has already stated that it hates to pay for old games, usually balking at price, licensing changes that have to be made or release schedules (I love watching folks that complained during the VC era with Nintendo now complain that Nintendo went subscription and collections for the switch). Also how long does that last? Many collections are locked on a then modern/now defunct system. Are companies expected to rerelease the same games every gen? Sales numbers make that a waste of money for all but super popular franchises. Does this include indie games who may not last a gen or two? Should they sell their games to large publishers to allow them to be “preserved”?

Most companies that have remained in good standing own a prime/unopened copy of their games or code; that is preservation to me. Many libraries have games as well. Most companies do what they can to provide access to games that they believe consumers will purchase or subscribe to. Licensing issues aren’t going away ever, so honestly given that nobody had a crystal ball in the 80’s I think existing companies are doing ok given the situation. If you want to individually “preserve” gaming, the second hand market (and buying what you can now) is where it’s at. Most consumer products aren’t truly designed for consumption decades later (look at the movies and tv industry. So many things lost forever). As much as I have nostalgia for things, I don’t entirely think that is bad. Buy (and experience) what you can access in your life but don’t hoard or demand a company to provide for some future generation.

Re: Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (PS5) - A Familiar But Fantastic Superhero Sequel

Ryu_Niiyama

Glad it reviewed well. I'm gonna wait for the complete edition (if there is DLC) or a price drop, as I still have to finish the first two games, (and I am still working on Horizon FW so that will be a while) but I'm happy that much of the free play allows you to play as the spider of your choice as I will be MM for most of my game.

I do hope they do a SpiderVerse game eventually so that we can play as other spiders in general. Comics have so outpaced Movies and Games, that it is hard to get hyped for the games anymore.

Re: Fairgame$ May Be Sony's Most Tone Deaf PS5, PC Title to Date

Ryu_Niiyama

Shrugs. A number of my younger cousins are curious about it so for now I think the game knows who its demographic is. People gotta accept that target demographics shift. And sometimes you fall out of them. And if you can’t make a game because inflation and supply chain issues exist, you might as well as shut down all game studios. That is like saying you can’t ever make a war game because there are active wars in the world (I do think you should be sensitive about where you release it though).

Re: Sony Won't Back Down on PC Ports, But PS5 Is the Priority

Ryu_Niiyama

I hope they maintain this momentum but improve the quality of the ports. I’m going back to PC next gen. At this point for me there is no reason to own all three consoles and PS was always my exclusives box. And many of the exclusives I would buy a PS system for are either on other systems or dead franchises. But this at least means I can still play any 1st party games.
