It's the temporary nature of these all you can eat subscriptions that put me off. I can just about get on board with the ps+ essential/games with gold, because at least you are guaranteed to have them in your library if you keep paying. Movie/TV streaming has a similar problem nowadays, difficult keeping up with what TV show is on what service. I really don't like being on a timer to use something.
Live service games seem to be a complete dice roll, there's no predicting what is the next big thing. Even having a solid franchise behind them doesn't seem to help. Problem is they need to be a success from the start, it seems to be very difficult to recover. People are attracted to games that other people are playing as far as multiplayer ones are concerned. Noone playing in the first place means noone probably ever will.
Hack and slash action, sigh. Why are RPG franchises always so desperate to leave their original fans behind and search for new ones? It doesn't seem to happen with any other genre.
I remember wow getting extremely toxic when DPS counters started becoming a thing, every group you joined would start arguing because at least one player was more interested in the DPS counter than the game.
I thought it was great from the start, complaints that it's slow seem odd to me. Yes it slowly opens up new locations and stuff, but you expect that from an RPG, introducing new things along the way to stop it getting too repetitive.
It seems a successful live service game needs to come out of the gate running, has there been one that had a slow start but succeeded later on? Every one I can think of, fall guys, rocket league, Fortnite etc were a success from day one.
Edit : hmm, maybe fallout 76, though that had a very dedicated fanbase because of the franchise
It needs a stronger library I think. Vr1 did very well at launch because vr in general was a new and exciting concept to everyone. Now we take it for granted. Of all the games I've seen, only horizon is the one I'm excited to try. Beat saber sure that's important too, but I have that already. One suggestion, one of the best vr games out there, Asgard's wrath is shamefully in sitting in relative obscurity on the oculus store. Maybe see if meta would want to port that over, it's an ideal system seller with some promotion and meta might be happy to finally make some money from it. And half life Alex too of course. Big showboat titles like these would convince me to buy.
@nessisonett perhaps ms have a subscription exclusivity deal? That Epic games case last year showed that they happen. Though obviously it's a bit odd that ms would have one for a Sony produced game. Still possible with MLB involved.
@Fight_Teza_Fight it's so cool when you get into one. A level uppers paradise. Does tend to get a bit glass cannon at the higher levels though, everyone just one shotting each other.
Bought one piece odyssey, it's pretty fun, but yeah the battles are so easy so far. Loads of interesting mechanics but there's no need to use any of them. Really needs a hard, or even normal mode patch.
I liked the first octopath, some of the boss battles went on forever though, and that's coming from someone who loves turn based games. I doubt not playing the first will have any impact on the 2nd, it'll likely be more like final fantasy, a completely different set of characters and story.
@Digit2021 some games are very active, that's Def something to be wary of in a busy house. I've personally knocked out a light bulb and punched a wall in the past (the wall was fine fortunately).
@Ralizah the writing in persona q is pretty rough all round to be honest. I remember Kanji in particular had a really tough time in that. He started quite well, giving a big speech about finally accepting who he was, but spent the rest of the game being mocked by everyone. Great music and gameplay though, I really love those ds make your own map games.
I've played 4 again very recently on the vita, but I'll prob buy it one day. 3 I'll probably buy quite soon, though I'm put off a little by the choice of port. The psp version had cutbacks to compensate for the memory size, I wish they'd gone a bit further and took the best of both versions.
@Dezzy70 the move was pretty good for that. Probably the closest I've felt to the old arcades. Though it's hard to compare cause I haven't played an arcade one for a quarter of a century lol. Second hand move controllers have taken a drop in price lately, so it's probably a good time for shooter enthusiasts to grab a PS3 and a pair, the games are all pretty cheap too. The gun attachments are pretty pricey though, especially official ones.
It's a downside of social media I guess, the spoilers for everything. I still clearly remember the day I was staring at my TV, horrified as sephiroth did his thing in ff7, I doubt we'll ever get a moment like that again. Last of us 2 could potentially have been one in a non social media world.
@MB81 you think it's kids keeping physical alive? I assumed the opposite, the older holdouts such as myself refusing to let it die. Though in switches case there's a variety of reasons. Games hold their resale value, it's a cartridge which makes it feel like a tangible product, and general distrust of Nintendo's legacy console interest.
@Korgon I've tried playing dreams again recently, and was really surprised by the high quality of the user content on there. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony have found a few promising potential game designers through that.
@GreatAuk The 'joel doomed mankind' thing is more open ended I think. It's never clarified that the fireflies killing Ellie would actually have found a cure, and the whole plan sounds a bit desperate to be honest.
Edit : And when you finally meet them in the final act, they hardly rolled out the red carpet for Joel and Ellie, they treated the situation terribly.
@RainbowGazelle I really liked the gameplay in 1, limited resources to keep it exciting but never enough to be frustrating. I remember clearing out entire human areas just figuring out patterns and stealth killing everyone, not needing to fire a bullet. Not very realistic but I certainly enjoyed it.
I like his videos, seems happy to rate the game on what he actually thinks, rather than public opinion. I'm unaware of any of the accusations here, I've never seen them in his videos.
Retro picks for me, final fantasy 1-6, p3p and suikoden. Sea of stars, diablo 4 and octopath 2 runners up. I'd love final fantasy xvi on my list, but from what I've seen so far, I'm not even sure if it's going to be an RPG.
@ItsBritneyB_tch the souls supposed difficulty has always been it's main selling point, take that away and I suspect it prob just be a series of little interest to most people.
@Rafie Seems unlikely that they plan so far ahead regarding ps+ to be honest. Fallout 76 has a subscription plan and microtransactions for people who really get into it, games like that they want to get out to as many people as possible.
@Milktastrophe there's a couple trophies for the original, the twins fight as said, and a special persona I think that you only get quite far into a second run.
Edit : and that's not even mentioning that following a step by step guide really isn't the best way to play it first time round. Though I guess that's just opinion, maybe some people enjoy it.
4 golden and the original V needed two playthroughs too. Or 1 and a 1/2 at least in Vs case. Royal was significantly easier, perhaps a nod to people who've already played v to death.
@Deljo the RPG category seems to expand ever outward. It's bloated a long way since the original days of simply meaning a computer game attempt at d&d. Other genres take elements traditionally associated with RPGs, which puts their own category into question, while traditional RPGs strive to lose the same elements, in the name of simplicity!
If a games got enough people to rate it as a top ten game, then it's a top ten game. Sure, it probably wouldn't be here if it wasn't Sonic, but he's a beloved character who has proven to be really hard to make decent 3d games for. I guess it's a big achievement they've made something the fans are happy with.
munches tobacco back in my day a platinum meant something. I still remember getting my first final fantasy 13, took me ages, and even that was considered to be one of the easier ones at the time.
Edit : I remember someone on the official playstation forum (rip) talking about having 50 platinums. They were met with both awe and a discussion about whether they had a life or not.
@Unlucky13 I use it mostly when I want to use headphones, plugged into the controller. I know, it's all about the wireless nowadays but I'm a bit behind in that area.
@funkyflounder83 beat saber sells tons of music packs, a large proportion (myself included) buys every single one, there's a good chance meta will want it on any popular vr I think. Also it's unclear how concerned meta are about hardware sales, they seem to be more interested in the vr 'space' or how to put it.
@sanderson72 it's an odd one, as far as I know Sony have never clarified that the drive is literally incapable of reading them. Not that it really matters I guess.
@CWill97 1 and 2 are very old school, worth a look if you are really into RPGs and/or the shin megami series, but most people probably won't be interested.
@sanderson72 Did it ever get confirmed that the ps4/5 disc drives are physically incapable of reading CDs? I've always assumed it's just that the drivers etc aren't there. To this day the thought of a drive that is literally unable to read a cd (but dvds and blu rays) seems odd to me. I'm not that knowledgeable on the subject though.
@thefourfoldroot1 the save system in p4 golden isn't that bad anyway really. The dungeons are floor based (like mementos in p5) and each floor is quite short. If you need to save then just use a gohom to get back to the start, and can re-enter at the floor you left. If you die, you get the option to resume at the start of the floor you are on. So usually not much progress is lost. My biggest setback was accidently fusing my main persona without updating it in the registry sometimes. That was irritating, I guess an autosave feature would've saved me from that maybe.
Probably mostly aimed at people hoping that it'll go up in value even further in the future. Which, it has a good chance of doing. The collectors edition market is an odd one.
@LifeGirl there were rumours a few years ago of a ff13 trilogy remaster coming out, never amounted to anything though. I'm sure it'll happen one day, square enix have done it to many other less high profile titles.
