This is why a new studio needs to start with small or AA project and why Sony needs to embrace small-mid budget games again for their 1st party studio.
AAA games comes with a very big risk where a flop means lay-off or the studio got closed down. But with AA, the risk is smaller and can be minimized if the game didn't sold that well. Not to mention AA games usually has shorter development cycle than AAA.
And just like Bungie, i personally think Firewalk and Haven Studio is an unnecessary acquisition.
Anyway...
Astro Bot: 60 bucks, AA budget, 3 years devs cycle with 60 people, GotY contender, and sold well.
VS
Concord: 40 bucks, AAA budget, 8 years devs cycle with 170 people, a catastrophic failure and became an internet joke & punching bag.
"Then thereβs the small matter of many of these products having non-gaming projects in the works"
Can you explain why there's no Twisted Metal remaster when the TV show released? A remaster of PS3 reboot or TM Black would be nice. And now with the TV show start shooting for season 2 but what we'll get is Horizon Remaster.
"Naughty Dog noted, when it made The Last of Us: Part 1, this was a great opportunity for it to blood new talent and get it comfortable with PS5 development."
I don't mind 1 remake / remaster as long the studio released new games. But ND did 3 remaster with Uncharted 4, Lost Legacy, and TloU Part 2 but so far no new games.
Meanwhile Insomniac only did 1 remaster (Spiderman) for PS5 and already released 3 new games (Miles Morales, Spiderman 2, R&C Rift Apart) and working on Wolverine and Venom.
Heck. Sony Santa Monica, Polyphony, Team Asobi, and Housemarque doesn't even do remaster. They just straight making GOW Ragnarok, GT 7, Astro Playroom & Astro Bot, and Returnal for PS5. So this 'remaster is for new blood to adapt with PS5 development' excuse sounds like a load of bollocks.
I personally don't mind remaster but it should be for games from PS1-3, PSP, or Vita era and not from PS4 who still looks great and can be played on PS5.
Games like Puppeteer, Tokyo Jungle, Folklore, Heavenly Sword, Forbidden Siren, The Getaway, Rogue Galaxy, Wild Arms, Soul Sacrifice, or Dark Cloud could get a second chance if they get a remaster. Heck, make a live action TV show or maybe anime which is less expensive than live action if Sony thinks their games needs non-gaming projects to make them successful. I would love a Wild Arms anime or Forbidden Siren TV show.
This is kinda reminds me of Capcom who sued Koei-Tecmo because they used gameplay mechanics or DLC expansions for Dynasty Warrior & Hyrule Warrior that looks similar from Capcom games. iirc KT lost the lawsuit and must pay Capcom like a million USD or something.
Possibly Pocketpair would lose since Nintendo has big influence in Japan.
"More like Apex, live service extraction shooter, and 40 bucks"
Ok. So nothing in this report that makes me say i want to play Marathon nor it makes the impression that Marathon will not end up like Concord.
But eh good luck for Bungie i guess, especially if they aim for 2025 release date. I mean, next year will have high profile games like GTA 6, MH Wilds, Wolverine / Venom, Death Stranding 2, new RE, and Doom: Dark Ages which people will prefer to spend their money for those games over a 40 bucks live service extraction shooter.
Heck, i'm not surprise if 2XKO will have more players than Marathon since it will be free to play.
@AdamNovice I would love Medievil 2 remake. I really enjoyed the PS4 remake and expect that Sony would continue with the second game. But from Insomniac leaks, the remake only sold around 500-600K copies which probably the reason why Sony didn't greenlight the second game remake :/
Some people doesn't understand how sequel works π . That's like saying RE 2 isn't a classic just because it still largely played the same like RE 1. Or Tomb Raider 2, Yakuza 2, Metroid 2, Shenmue 2, or Batman Arkham City isn't a classic because they still pretty much played the same as the first game.
@Flaming_Kaiser I wish Housemarque still making 2D side scrolling games like Matterfall or top down twin stick shooter again. I'm not against their decision to focus on AAA games but devs like them really shine when they made AA games that focus on gameplay than graphic or story.
@Yousef- Despite some flaws, i really enjoyed The Getaway. It's like GTA but took place in UK and also reminds me a bit of Guy Ritchie's movie called Snatch.
I'm still sad that Sony cancelled The Getaway 3 and Eight Days
I would double dip. But does SIE president even know if they have an IP called Soul Sacrifice? π
@tameshiyaku No it's not.
The only similarity between MH and Soul Sacrifice is they hunt monsters and that's it. Outside that, both games are quite different from artstyle, settings, story, gameplay, music, and even the type of monsters.
Sony have the resources to remaster Wild Arms, Syphon Filter, Infamous, Resistance, Heavenly Sword, Freedom Wars, Soul Sacrifice, Folklore, Forbidden Siren, Puppeteer, Rule of Rose, The Getaway, Killzone or any of their games from PS1-PS3, PSP, and Vita era that not yet have a remaster. Heck, they can contact 3rd party like Capcom and funded remaster of Onimusha 2/3, Breath of Fire, Viewtiful Joe, Dino Crisis, or whatever.
But no. They or my big guess is Hermen Hulst, decided to remaster Horizon: Zero Dawn, a 7 years old PS4 game that still looks great and can be played on PS5! Doesn't makes any fking senseπ
I'm definitely not gonna get this remaster since i already own HZD steelcase edition which i bought it on day 1. And then Sony gave Greatest Hits that include Frozen Wild for free with Play At Home initiative.
@Tevor This has nothing to do with God Eater or any game universe. It's a stand alone.
@TheTraditional Some people said his statement was towards anime or movie which i could agreed. But he also included Playstation which doesn't makes any sense at all since Sony themself has created tons of original IP's since PS1 era but they abandon many of them.
This is why i worried that we got another Jim Ryan but from Japan lol.
This is a big surprise but a missed opportunity for Sony to make it exclusives since they lend the license to Dimp. Just show Sony higher ups doesn't give a finger with Japan Studio IP, especially when SIE president himself said Sony lacking original IP :/
But hey, at least more people playing this fun game. I bought Vita version on day 1 and really like it. Maybe i will double dip with this remaster...
@GymratAmarillo "Sony already lost the money anyway so the only thing left to do is to make money and save Bungie in the process"
Save Bungie huh despite losing tons of money. If only they did this with Japan Studio, London Studio, Evolution Studio, Studio Liverpool, Zipper, and Pixelopus...

@nedbvai These are some new IP published / advertised by Sony. Go buy them:
@naruball I've seen some gamers mocked games with simple 2D pixelated graphic like this. But yes, the situation isn't as widespread as 3D games with AA budget that looks like a PS3 games.
I dislike MTX but i don't mind publisher put MTX in their games as long as they make a great game and don't forced that MTX on players.
Example. DMC 5 is a great game and it has MTX where you can buy 100K Red Orbs with just $1 (iirc). But there's no need to spend $1 when you can farm Red Orbs by just replaying the mission or used Dante Dr.Faust that can generate plenty of Red Orbs easily.
And honestly, i don't think single player games needs MTX at all. But gamers brought this situation to themself when they bought Oblivion horse armor DLC...
Why game reviewers should be skilled players or at least can play video games pretty well? Because many times, good games got undeserved bad scores from gaming reviewers who doesn't know jacks**t how the game works. Just look at IGN who gave 3/10 for God Hand or 5/10 for Alien Isolation. Or look at how game journalist like Dean Takahashi who doesn't know how to complete Cuphead tutorial and can't aimed for **** in Doom.
Don't let me start with games reviewers who used "diversity" to review a game. If a game doesn't have certain group then they will give it a bad score. Just google that site that gave 6/10 for Black Myth Wukong just because "lack of diversity".
But sadly the majority of gamers let themself got dictated by plenty of clueless game reviewers / journalist about what games they must or musn't play. Game reviewers also made a big influence that made "7" feels like a bad score, to the point a lot of gamers always think games that scored below 8 is a bad game or not worth to play.
And what's more sad, publishers / developers also still used metacritic and gaming site like IGN as a standard.
What makes me really annoyed with game reviewers nowadays is they didn't finish the game they review and put "linear design" as a con. Not every games needs to be open world or has big level design with plenty of daily checklist to do. Action games like DMC, Bayonetta, Vanquish, Space Marine, or Gungrave are fits perfectly with linear design because combat is the meat and bone of the game.
I'm just glad i don't put review score as the priority to play a game. I can't imagine myself not playing fun games like God Hand, Folklore, Gungrave G.O.R.E, Shadow of the Damned, Asura's Wrath, or Haunting Ground just because game reviewers gave it a 5 or 6.
@twitchtvpat It's damned if you do, damned if you don't for some people. Meanwhile there's plenty of new games coming out every week that people decided to ignored them including Astro Bot which is an original game from Sony.
I bet a lot of commenters in PushSquare who asked for original games still not yet play Kunitsu Gami, Unicorn Overlord, or Shadow of the Ninja Reborn.
I really don't get the mentality "this game is for kids" as if it's a traversty for adult who play and enjoyed it. The rating even showed "E" for Everyone.
It's reminds me with people who said adults can't play Lego, collect action figures, play video games, or watch anime. These people has problem with their parents who teached them when they became adults, they can't have a hobby or having fun anymore. It should be work, work, family, and more work.
No wonder a lot of people looks more stressful these days.
@Northern_munkey While PS5 Pro isn't for me but yeah, there's no way building a gaming rig with the same specs like PS5 Pro will be cheaper than 700 bucks. A high end GPU that equivalent to PS5 Pro alone will cost 500-600 bucks or more. We're not even talking the CPU, RAM, SSD, power supply, and a good case. It could cost 1000+ bucks to build a gaming rig that as good if not better than PS5 Pro.
Nishino's right. Console still have the advantage when comes to convenience of plug and play.
Back in 2009, I used to own a gaming rig that can run Crysis 1 and The Witcher 2 at mid setting. Building the rig wasn't that hard for me but definitely not as cheap as buying a console.
What put me off with PC gaming was the amount of times where the VGA driver doesn't work or not compatible with older games.
Not to mention the constant upgrade like every 3-4 years if you want to keep up with the tech. A new RAM, CPU, and VGA possibly not working with your 3-4 years old motherboard because they have different slot. So that means you need to buy a new motherboard if you want a new RAM, CPU, & VGA. And the new motherboard or VGA could not fit with your old case which means you need to buy a new case too. It's so annoying and requires a lot of money and time just to build the rig.
Of course there's a fullset PC that you can buy without spending the time to build it. But they some time more expensives than build your own.
Oh and yeah PC doesn't have physical copy anymore and i always prefer physical over digital. That's why i abandoned PC gaming since 2013/14 and used my PC for work or browsing only.
But looking ahead, if PS6 is fully digital then i'm done with Sony. Might jump to Nintendo if Switch 2 still used cartridge or any physical media.
I just tried Reynatis demo and it gave me Kingdom Hearts vibe with the music which turns out it's composed by Yoko Shimomura.
Graphics looks pretty mid budget though which is expected from FuRyu but the artstyle looks nice. And the story & setting looks interesting along with a pretty fast pace and fun combat.
I reccomend to try the demo for anyone who wants a mid-budget JRPG that offers something different.
@Czar_Khastik It's fun, like arcade games or mid-budget PS2 / PS3 era fun.
There's some difficulty spike at some stages especially at last stage where they thrown enemies that has pretty high damage attack and feels a bit spongy. But they still beatable.
@cragis0001 "Sony purchased Psygnosis back in 1993 which was one of the biggest European publishers at the time."
Psygnosis wasn't the biggest European publisher back in 1993, not even as big as ABK or Bethesda. Psygnosis only had 50-70 employee back then and Sony "only" spent Β£20 million to acquired them, which was a far cry compare to Billions of $$$$$ that MS spent to acquired Bethesda and ABK.
"They dominated the EU/US market in 1996 with Psygnosis titles."
In the US, Sony dominated the market with Capcom, Namco, and EA games. Capcom with RE 1, Namco with Tekken 2, and EA with Madden NFL 1997.
And in EU, there was only two Psygnosis games in the best selling chart; Formula 1 and Destruction Derby. The rest are from Capcom, EA, Crystal Dynamic, Namco, and Naughty Dog.
"Microsoft bought Bethesda to stop Sony bagging Starfield & other titles as timed exclusives after Deathloop & Ghostwire Tokyo. As for ABK that was for mobile & PC market gains."
I can't believe someone still eat Phil Spencer lies π
"Peter Moore said when he was head of Sega that Sony would revoke stock if PlayStation didn't get more floor space than the competition."
What "floor" are you talking about, the dance floor? Lol. But Peter Moore is as slimy as Phil Spinners. Best to take his words with a grain of salt.
I played Trine: Enchanted Edition which i bought from PSN sales. The game kinda short, i think i finished it around 3-4 hours? But i love it. The graphics looks nice, the characters are quite charming, and the puzzles & platforming are pretty good that maximize all three characters skills.
Also, i'm replaying Gungrave G.O.R.E and Tengai for Platinum trophy. Tengai only need 1 more trophy; finish the game without continue under very hard difficulty which is effing hard. And Gungrave needs 6 more trophies with multiple repeats.
@Ralizah "Which is more frustrating considering how many potential live service blunders they have in the making, and how few original PS5 games they've released overall this generation"
Can you blame Sony for making less original games when the majority of PS fans never show up to support those original games?
See what happened to Gravity Rush, Freedom Wars, Soul Sacrifice, Jeanne D'Arc, Sackboy, Returnal, Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, and many more. Even the latest Astro Bot only sold 12K in Japan which is a fking tragedy π
It's the sad reality that PS5 sold 60 million units but only less than 0.5-1% from those numbers who cares about "original games".
@Ralizah People will still complain even if Sony take the middle ground.
And i'm sure PS5 will have enough games for next year or two. Sony already showed Death Stranding 2, Wolverine, Fairgames, Lost Soul Aside, Phantom Blade Zero, MH Wilds, MGS 3 remake, etc. Insomniac leaks also showed Venom, Spidey 3, an X-Men game, a new Ratchet, and a new IP until 2032.
People needs to relax and enjoyed what's already out. Let devs do their job.
@Khwarezm89 Because back then people was whining like an entitled babies, asking Sony to announced their games close to release date. And now when Sony did it, people are crying and complaining why no communication from Sony, Sony is lazy, Sony is arrogant, etc etc.
@StrickenBiged Ikr. There's so many games that already out and i want to play them but can't because of limited money and time. And when i bought one or two games from my wishlist, they already announced plenty of new interesting games that will come out soon.
I'm not yet own Unicorn Overlord, Ace Attorney 4-6 and Investigation collection, Kunitsu Gami, Shadow of the Ninja Reborn, Space Marine 2, Astro, etc etc.
So i feel quite envy every time i see some people who's complaining and ask for more games as if they already played and finished all games that just came out. Must be nice to be rich and have a lot of free time. sigh π
For the rest of this year and possibly half of 2025, I personally already locked in with some games that already out but i don't have the time / money to play / buy them. So I don't expect anything from this SOP outside Death Stranding 2.
Don't havy any expectation is better. That way, you wouldn't feel dissapoint if the show doesn't have nothing that you want.
I found one sad truth from Astro Bot sales in Japan: Japan market is a lost cause for Sony. The majority of Japanese just doesn't care anymore with Sony / Playstation.
The last Sony 1st party game that sold really well in Japan in the 1st week was Ghost of Tsushima back in 2020 that sold 200K copies (and 3 years later it sold 1 million copies). After Ghost, all Sony 1st party games sold less and less copies in the 1st week like GT 7 sold 130K, Horizon FW sold 91K, GoW Ragnarok sold 40K, and Spidey 2 sold 30K copies.
So let's say Sony doesn't closed Japan Studio and they put a lot of resources for Japan market including greenlight games that the Japanese will enjoy like Wild Arms, Ape Escape, Alundra, Legaia, Dark Cloud, Freedom Wars, Soul Sacrifice etc. I bet those games will end up just like Astro Bots with 10-12K copies in the first week no matter how good the game is.
And looking at 3rd party exclusives like Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin, they only sold 10K and 60K in the 1st week in Japan. Heck, big exclusives games like FF XVI and VII Rebirth only sold 330K and 310K copies where they usually sold at least 1 million copies in the 1st week.
This is the reason why Sony didn't go big anymore with Japan market and spread their wings at other market. That's the reason why we had China Hero Project, India Hero Project, Middle East Hero Project, collabs with Korean devs, and all those gacha games from Mihoyo. Those devs had a lot of potentials and some of their games sold really well at international market. But working with them doesn't need tons of money compare to Japan or western devs.
I'm not surprised if we see Sony do more and more collaboration / exclusives games with Korean, Chinese, and non-Japanese devs for the rest of PS5 life cycle.
@TheTony316 Yeah i just saw the report. Hopefully Astro sold well in the US.
@gollumb82 VC 1 on PS3 actually sold well one year later after price cut and anime adaptation released. PS3 ver alone sold 1 million copies worldwide and the series wasn't on hiatus since SEGA made VC 2 and 3 for PSP back in 2010 & 2011 (they should remaster these games especially VC 3) and VC D for mobile in 2012.
I myself bought 2 copies of PS3 version and when PS4 remaster came out i bought the steelcase edition on day 1. Sadly VC 4 probably the last game in the series despite it sold 1 million copies all PS, Switch, Xbox, Stadia, and PC ver combine...
So physical sales are below Rift Apart but overall sales is 21% above. Well, i guess there's some hope. Now let's see how it sell in the land of freedom...

Re: Mini Review: Mister Mosquito (PS2) - Sony Classic Sucks in All the Right Ways
This game is a 10/10 from unique idea alone. Playing as a mosquito and sucking blood from annoying human? Brilliant!
And the flaws are tolerable. I mean, it's from early PS2 era. But the core gameplay is still fun.

Re: State of Play Rumoured for This Month As Sony Looks Set to Skip PS Showcase in 2024
@twitchtvpat It's damned if you do, damned if you don't for some people.
Re: Test Your PlayStation General Knowledge - Issue 27
Got 8/10
Only wrong with Pac-Man and DA Inquisition (i didn't played both games).
Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Astro Bot?
I really don't get the mentality "this game is for kids" as if it's a traversty for adult who play and enjoyed it. The rating even showed "E" for Everyone.
It's reminds me with people who said adults can't play Lego, collect action figures, play video games, or watch anime. These people has problem with their parents who teached them when they became adults, they can't have a hobby or having fun anymore. It should be work, work, family, and more work.
No wonder a lot of people looks more stressful these days.
Re: Sony Boss Says 'PCs Are Difficult to Set Up', Firm Will Focus on PS5
@Northern_munkey While PS5 Pro isn't for me but yeah, there's no way building a gaming rig with the same specs like PS5 Pro will be cheaper than 700 bucks. A high end GPU that equivalent to PS5 Pro alone will cost 500-600 bucks or more. We're not even talking the CPU, RAM, SSD, power supply, and a good case. It could cost 1000+ bucks to build a gaming rig that as good if not better than PS5 Pro.
Re: Sony Boss Says 'PCs Are Difficult to Set Up', Firm Will Focus on PS5
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 546
@Czar_Khastik Hey i'm glad i can help fam π€
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 546
@Czar_Khastik It's fun, like arcade games or mid-budget PS2 / PS3 era fun.
There's some difficulty spike at some stages especially at last stage where they thrown enemies that has pretty high damage attack and feels a bit spongy. But they still beatable.
Re: Bungie Accused of Overselling Itself to Sony, Promising Success It Couldn't Deliver
Here's the top 10 best-selling home console games in 1996
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1996_in_video_games
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 546
Oh and Tales of Vesperia remastered at 3rd Arc.
Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Astro Bot?
I would give it a 10/10 but the score doesn't matter when the majority of PS fans doesn't support this game :/
Re: State of Play Rumoured for This Month As Sony Looks Set to Skip PS Showcase in 2024
@Ralizah "Which is more frustrating considering how many potential live service blunders they have in the making, and how few original PS5 games they've released overall this generation"
Re: State of Play Rumoured for This Month As Sony Looks Set to Skip PS Showcase in 2024
@Ralizah People will still complain even if Sony take the middle ground.
Re: Don't Sleep on PS2 Secret Gem Sky Gunner, Coming to PS5, PS4 Next Week
Never had the chance to played this game on PS2. I just watched some video and the gameplay looks pretty interesting with cell shading graphics that still looks beautiful.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0QclbuZlIic&pp=ygUNc2t5Z3VubmVyIHBzMg%3D%3D
I love Ace Combat and this game looks fit on my alley. So, another one for my wishlist :3
Re: Filming on Ubisoft's Watch Dogs Movie Has Wrapped
I enjoyed PoP movie. I mean, Gemma Arterton is an eye candy and Jake Gyllenhaal + Ben Kingsley did a nice job as the protags & villain.
I also kinda enjoyed AssCreed movie but because i'm a fans of Michael Fassbender works.
So, maybe i'll watch this is if it based on the second game which i really enjoyed.
Re: State of Play Rumoured for This Month As Sony Looks Set to Skip PS Showcase in 2024
@Khwarezm89 Because back then people was whining like an entitled babies, asking Sony to announced their games close to release date. And now when Sony did it, people are crying and complaining why no communication from Sony, Sony is lazy, Sony is arrogant, etc etc.
@HRdepartment I'll take remaster of:
Heck, i don't mind ICO or Medievil 2 remake.
Re: State of Play Rumoured for This Month As Sony Looks Set to Skip PS Showcase in 2024
@StrickenBiged Ikr.
Must be nice to be rich and have a lot of free time. sigh π
Re: State of Play Rumoured for This Month As Sony Looks Set to Skip PS Showcase in 2024
For the rest of this year and possibly half of 2025, I personally already locked in with some games that already out but i don't have the time / money to play / buy them. So I don't expect anything from this SOP outside Death Stranding 2.
Don't havy any expectation is better. That way, you wouldn't feel dissapoint if the show doesn't have nothing that you want.
Re: Japan Sales Charts: Astro Bot Barely Registers at Retail, PS5 Numbers Plummet After Price Hike
I found one sad truth from Astro Bot sales in Japan:
Japan market is a lost cause for Sony.
Re: Assassin's Creed Shadows' Japan Looks Stunning in New Open World Showcase
This game is in very bad position after Outlaws and XDefiant bad results and the whole Ubisoft shareholder wants Yves to get out from the company.
Re: Japan Sales Charts: Astro Bot Barely Registers at Retail, PS5 Numbers Plummet After Price Hike
Re: Astro Bot PS5 Sales Trending Ahead of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart in the UK
So physical sales are below Rift Apart but overall sales is 21% above. Well, i guess there's some hope. Now let's see how it sell in the land of freedom...
@J-Dubs Ratchet Rift Apart sold well at 4 million copies
