Re: Poll: Are You Happy with Your PS Plus Extra, Premium Games for November 2022?

Totheteeth

Firstly - I’m really never sure why the fact that people own some/a lot/all of the games is relevant to whether it’s a good update or not.

Secondly - is anyone else a bit sick of hearing about how terrible people think premium is? What is it? £20 a year or something extra? I gotta be honest - we might be living in hard times n’all but that barely buys you a round of drinks in your local pub. Debate whether it’s what you want(ed) etc but HONESTLY - it matters little what financial bracket one falls into when it comes the sum of money we are dealing with here. Ok - I get it - you think premium is bs - cool - don’t subscribe/unsubscribe - go spend your £20 on a joint of beef - roast is next Sunday - go the extra mile and have some Tesco finest mustard to go with it - fall asleep a happy person in the late afternoon - done - end of. Cos that’s literally the context of the expenditure which is causing people to bang on and on, using language like ‘scam’ and the rest!

Despite the customary rage at the top tier getting very little, there are some good games here!

I wanted to try the latest Kingdom Hearts and What Remains… but i would almost certainly never buy either. Ultimately, a few games id like to try - I think that’s pretty good going.

Re: Soapbox: God of War Ragnarok Is a Real Game of the Year Rival to Elden Ring

Totheteeth

I’m interested in the Eurogamer review, which takes issue with it trying to cram in huge numbers or characters and force the plot through a near constant stream of narrative arcs so each one can feel fleshed out.

Listen - I don’t know - I haven’t played it. I will do. Possibly not immediately. I liked and appreciated the last one but it’s not something I go insane for.

Just across the spectrum it feels like there are a few more critics taking issue with some of GOW’s design choices than there were ER.

(I don’t get a personal opinion on the matter cos I have to admit I haven’t got round to playing that either…)

Re: PS Plus Extra, Premium Lose Five PS4 Games on 15th November

Totheteeth

That’s such a nuisance. I played the first one last month and kinda wanted the other two there for when I want to go back to them. There are hundreds of games the service could lose without me being at all interested. They pick two of the ones I’ve never played and had on my back burner…

Re: Hideo Kojima Says Next Project Will Transcend Video Games, 'It's Almost Like a New Medium'

Totheteeth

It wasn’t so much the tedium of the traversal based gameplay which killed DS so quick for me. I wasn’t a great fan of it but at the same time I loved how the dual sense was used and I LOVED it the first time I got out into the open, the camera panned back and that incredibly well chosen soundtrack kicked in.

What I actually hated was the ‘I’m Kojima - this is my vision - you WILL bare witness as I eek it out painfully slowly and oh so dramatically while you marvel at how transcendentally artistic I am’ business.

Cmon - it’s a video game. I’m all for artistry and production value and new concepts and merging the intellectual with playability. But this wasn’t really any of those things tbh. It was the work of someone who is too close to the output of his own vision, and who therefore cannot take nearly enough perspective to consider the experience other people are getting of that output. Basic philosophy of all artistic creation isn’t it? You don’t own the experience of the audience; you need to put that first. He didn’t.

Re: The Witcher 3 PS5 Version News Coming 'Soon', Says a Cheeky CDPR

Totheteeth

Yknow - I finally completed this game on about my FOURTH play through. I just fell off the first 3 time. Not because I didn’t like it. More because it sucked me in so hard I burned myself out with it. I finally managed it during the first lockdown!

I then didn’t progress onto the dlc cos I was burnt out with it (again). I might actually go back to this to play the DLC on ps5 and that will do me for seeing it upgraded to next gen. I DEFINITELY couldn’t even contemplate playing the whole game again! I loved it but Jesus - enough for one lifetime!

Re: Dragon Age: Dreadwolf Now Playable from Start to Finish

Totheteeth

Probably an unpopular opinion but I was a huge fan of Dragon Age 2 and found Inquisition to be pretty vacuous.

It was the characters and narrative of DA2 which simply weren’t there in the sequel.

I was actually also a solid fan of the condensed, non/semi open world design. (Not sure which one it counts as). I imagine, the trend being that everything must be OW, that that’s what people didn’t like about 2. Worked for me; carried the characters and their inter-woven journeys really well.

Other things going for it involved the protagonist’s lines being sometimes hilarious, and I also got a sex scene with the hot, sulky elf. Most of the party members (Varric aside) in Inquisition were very tedious and frankly none of them deserved to sleep with my main man!

I hope they can re-find some of that and not create an over-inflated game full of relatively directionless tedium, which would be my lasting view of DAI. Seem to remember I still completed the bloody thing though …

Re: Console Players Will Need to Learn How to Shoot as Overwatch 2 Disables Aim Assist in Crossplay

Totheteeth

Overwatch 2 not being that popular is probably because they seem to have removed all charm from the original game, turned it into a game which is totally dps dominated so it lacks the inclusivity and tactics of the original … AND made practically zero effort to hide the fact it’s a blatant cash grab to squeeze as much profit out of the IP as they possibly can for a few more years.

Might well not have worked cos it does really feel like they’ve alienated a very considerable proportion of the original game’s loyal player base. I’m definitely mourning the loss of my go-to online game…

Re: Yes, You Can Turn the Effects Off in Need for Speed Unbound

Totheteeth

I miss bonkers arcadey racing and karting games. Back in the day there were loads and they were so playable. Unlockables right left and centre. A game having a visual identity like this is at least a step in the right direction. Sometimes feels like all track games have to be SO serious now. Bring back the wacky arcadey stuff. Oh and the cool vehicular combat games. Always remember a Star Wars one which probably for critically panned but I loved it.

Re: HBO's The Last of Us Ellie 'Encouraged Not' to Play the Games

Totheteeth

@tallythwack - kinda what I’m saying though isn’t it? Of course they rely on that pre-existing fan base to get off the ground. But to rely on fans of the game to make it a success? Seems very doubtful numbers wise. The aim surely is to dramatically widen the number of people (audience) who henceforth acknowledge that brand/title as a thing. Reality is a lot of them wouldn’t have done otherwise.

Re: HBO's The Last of Us Ellie 'Encouraged Not' to Play the Games

Totheteeth

Controversially, I’m not actually convinced tv adaptations are designed to target people who played the games and therefore want to see the game performed by actors.

That contingent are important for creating a marketing hype and drawing a wider audience in but I actually think that’s a narrow part of the whole target audience, the hope being that more people who aren’t avid gamers are drawn into the ecosystem surrounding the game. Correct me if I’m wrong - I just think these things aren’t made primarily as a fan service to fans of the games.

Re: EA Scores Own Goal as FIFA 23 Hero Pack Snafu Wipes Millions of Coins Off Virtual Market

Totheteeth

Yeh … and you’d been thinking the arguments about micro transactions and what kids are being exposed to weren’t serious.

Good article (I think it was actually the review) on Eurogamer which likened FUT to a casino, only a casino in which you can never, ever cash out.

Sadly FIFA (which I used to love for its career mode) is now a very grim example of what gaming can become if allowed to.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 447

Totheteeth

I’m in mourning. I’m a long term Overwatch addict. Mostly an off tank player. Not only does OW2 basically negate the nuanced tactics which made the original game so different, it has also essentially rendered off tanks unplayable. Sadly … I see this as the death of a game I probably won’t know what to do without…

Re: Rumour: Of Course Disney Wants to Release a New Star Wars Game Every Six Months

Totheteeth

In gaming I don’t think there’s any Star Wars fatigue at all tbh. Historically Star Wars games have been dog.

I’m an old fashioned Star Wars fan and as a kid I dreamt of great Star Wars games and basically never really got them.

Until such a time as there is an actually an established trend of genuinely good Star Wars games, I’m still very much hungry.

Having said that I also miss arcadey games with loads of unlockables, governed by simplicity and hunger for Star Wars games a bit like the old vehicle combat arena one I can remember. I also remember loving masters of Teras Kasai as a kid even though it got panned. I didn’t care- it was a Star Wars beat em up which let you unlock a new character every time you beat it. The days of games like that seem long gone and I often bemoan the new era of gamers who are DISGUSTED by having to actually play tk unlock characters and stuff. To me - that was what I wanted to play for.

I digress a bit. But either way, I’m very hungry for a range of new Star Wars games and kinda want them like right now! Both big new AAA adventure games and smaller arcade based games. I don’t even especially want them to be original. In a way I want the nostalgia of my youth rendered with modern graphics and games engines. I’m even slighy turned off when I hear that it won’t REALLY be Star Wars cos it’ll just be some bugger inventing a whole load of non-canon characters and claiming it’s Star Wars.

The conclusion of the (intolerably excessive) rant might actually just be that I’m kinda old now. I’ll get my coat.

Re: Prepare to Play Through PS5's Gotham Knights a Fair Few Times

Totheteeth

Hate to say it but it sounds like they’re being very careful to avoid falsely claiming there are branching narratives. The character saying a slightly different thing in reaction to the exact same cut scene you saw last time is what seems to be inferred. I’m not bothered tbh - I struggle with Marvel/DC games anyway. I’ll try it if people rave about it but would be highly unlikely to end up replaying it to see this ‘subtly altered’ perspective on the story lolz

Re: Embracer CEO Doesn't Expect a Great Return on Investment from Saints Row

Totheteeth

I just don’t see how you can claim a title is an next gen ‘reboot’ and turn out what is supposed to be a AAA title which looks like it’s from a previous generation.

It’s as though no clear decision was made one way or the other. People (ie me) would happily accept a game which isn’t graphics driven on the basis it’s a bonkers and non-pc as previous entries; they were hugely enjoyable. I might also have given it a go if it wanted to take a more serious tone and be a more serious game … if it looked and felt like it. A game which is basically neither of these things and caught in an uncomfortable no-mans-land in the middle? Not so much…

Re: Clown Around with Harley Quinn in Gotham Knights Boss Fight

Totheteeth

I’m sure many have said this before - but so much about this echoes of being very out of date, no? Graphically it is quite a long way from impressive and the way she very sporadically spams bad cut and paste voice notes… I feel like I want to be into this but find it really hard to see how it isn’t going to get panned …

Re: Poll: Is PS Plus Premium Good Enough?

Totheteeth

I personally think a HUGE amount of noise is being made over what is really quite a negligible price difference. At the most expensive price point (paying monthly) it’s about £2 more than extra isn’t it? What does that buy you exactly!?
