@colonelkilgore I think that’s fair. Polls like this are often just a gut reaction. They’re going to show extreme feelings, not measured takes.
I bet a lot of people are still upset by the price hike. Others don’t want Sony pursuing live service games or anything multiplayer and are going to ding Sony just for giving them a multiplayer game. Etc etc.
I like the concept of physical but I hate how licensing makes them worse to use because the disc has to be in and the noise from disc spinning. My PS5 is loud enough.
I totally get people who own these games not being happy about this month but I don’t know what you would expect to be better. If every month was like this I would expect most people would be happy.
Jan: Fallen Order Feb: OlliOlli World Apr: Sackboy Jun: Jurassic World Evolution 2 Jul: Alan Wake Remastered Jul: Endling Aug: Death’s Door Dec: Powerwash Simulator
I’m hoping Sony had another surprise in store for later this month but not holding my breath.
I can imagine using something like chatgpt (eg llama2) or ai voice synthesis to change some of the interaction models.
1. You say your name to the computer at start and then all characters could use it in-game. 2. Minor characters could use llama2 to generate non-repeating dialogue with voice synthesis and allow for more dynamic responses with players. That said, I’m not convinced this is desirable for main characters.
I am excited by Powerwash and interested in Sable. I can see a lot of people who don’t want games like this. Even more so for end of the year this seems like a weaker selection. People are going to hope for a AAA title or something similar.
That said, if every month was like this I would be delighted.
Potential Advantages of adding a successful mobile strategy:
increased revenue
larger customer base
diversified portfolio to deal with changing consumer demands
new types of gaming experiences not dependent on your own hardware releases. Some developers may prefer to work on these projects so perhaps better recruiting and retention.
Advantages of NOT pursuing mobile:
increased focus on satisfying existing customer base
focus on core studio products and brands including maximizing value of Playstation hardware.
If by do I want mobile you mean do I want to play games on-the-go hell yes. BUT if by do I want mobile games you mean do I want a zero-cost-of entry but ultimately hundreds of dollars game that has no ending, no. No I don’t want that. I play games with endings so I can have my closure and move on to the next game.
I’m glad at least some of the commenters are willing to explore other possibilities than censorship such as it was a bug fix or an internal QA update.
My cheap opinion is that this might just be pure capitalism at work. I bet a lot of people would be less interested, grossed out, or embarrassed to play around friends/family with v1. Might want to consider they just made the change to make more money.
I think Atlus could do better with anime distribution but you’ll never get a live action that can match the style of Persona. As Scott McCloud says: “WHEN YOU LOOK AT A PHOTO OR REALISTIC DRAWING OF A FACE-- YOU SEE IT AS THE FACE OF ANOTHER. BUT WHEN YOU ENTER THE WORLD OF THE CARTOON-- YOU SEE YOURSELF.”
I don’t think Twitter is a stable business partner to warrant integrations. If I were Sony I would focus on integrations with larger, more relevant, more stable social networks and sharing platforms.
Metaphor is the next Atlus release I am excited about. I’m watching P3R but playing Trails games cause they make and release new JRPGs almost every year.
1. With Sony, Atlus, and others going multiplat I feel like my PS5 is less needed than I did when I got it at launch.
2. My new Steam Deck has really taken some value from my PS5 as well. It can’t do ultra high quality AAA visuals but it still can run most games at a lower price to buy and with a better digital ownership model including free cloud saves.
3. The direction of live service/multiplayer, higher prices, and fewer weird titles causes me concerns.
Edit: 4. This is my first PlayStation and I experienced many PS4 games on my Ps5. I imagine I would rate it lower if I had already played them.
This is a great hardware platform for them to build towards full cloud gaming. I hope they will keep pushing this new platform (just like I hope to see more PSVR2).
I love so much that they continue to regularly push out these titles. I wish more devs would take note. I don’t need massive improvements in graphics, quest logs, and world size in every game.
Weird choices for awards. I haven’t play BG3 yet. It’s probably stellar. That said, it was a stellar year for gamers. Maybe the best ever. I would expect more slots for all the other excellent games.
I don’t see how you make a platform locked live service game.
Fortnite, Genshin, all those mobile games I can’t name— the reason these titles make bank is (1) they run on everything so they have a huge potential audience and (2) that audience can constantly engage and spend money.
I just don’t see how Sony gains that level of success especially from their customer base — which based on Spiderman’s success wants epic AAA single player titles.
@Dirk_Diggler i find it amazing they raised the price and didn’t work to ensure the selection immediately after the price raise was enticing. Really bad messaging.
Quirky/weird/fun: Bugsnax Sackboy Heavenly Bodies Toem Tony Hawk Overcooked Maquette Concrete Genie Olli Olli World Yakuza Like a Dragon
Single player Action: Plague Tale Control Superhot Jedi Fallen Order Little Nightmares Mass Effect Remastered Death’s Door Endling Minecraft Dungeons Alan Wake Shadow of Tomb Raider
If it was $50 for both plus all DLC and PH3 did it then… maybe.
For now I am using my Steam Deck for most new 3rd party games. I would make exceptions for particularly excellent releases, graphically intense games, or games many family members want to play (couch coop etc).
From my perspective on PS the digital experience is better. I don’t have to listen to the disk drive or get up to switch games. I am concerned about preservation though.
@Fyz306903 excellent question on power consumption and I want to know that too. MS has done a good job reducing the XSX power consumption over time. A smaller, cooler model that uses less electricity would be more compelling.
@Max_the_German sure, but being able to run Ue5 does not mean it’s as performant as Ps5 anymore than being able to run Witcher 3 meant Switch had the same performance as Ps4. That’s the crucial context all the gaming sites left out. Moores Law just doesn’t work like that. A 2022 computer isn’t going to be as fast as a 2020 computer with 1/20th the electricity.
There are people who are desperate to believe that their game/system of choice is going to demonstrably the best choice in every category. And that’s a fools errand. And we should build a gaming community that celebrates games for different reasons.
I am so glad the board gaming community doesn’t demand the best packaging and design and rules and everything else they go toxic on social media.
@Beerheadgamer82 yep! some of the press reported it was running Matrix UE5 demo and people extrapolated from that. It’s frustrating bc the gaming press has little-to-no incentive to inform people.
@Beerheadgamer82 Switch 2 will be somewhere around the power of a Steam Deck, nowhere near PS5 or XSX — so don’t let gaming sites mislead you. It’s simply power — a 10 watt computer can’t beat a 200 watt computer. Yet.
HDR will matter on the inevitable OLED mode and it would be a win for a lot of people with nice tvs.
Nope. I have ToCS 1-4 on my PS5 but I am switching new Trails purchases (Reverie, Kuro no Kiseki) to the Steam PH3 releases on my Steam Deck. My new PS5 purchases will primarily be for first party games, couch multiplayer, Ps+ offerings and Trails games are pretty ideal for portable mode.
I got a Steam Deck and with Playstation games moving to PC after one year and most of the Atlus/Falcom stuff going PC and/or multiplatform makes me less interested in the Playstation ecosystem. That said, I reup’d my Ps+ before the price hike and we’ll see how it goes. Over the past year I think I did quite well with PS+ (even with this terrible month) and I will hope for that to continue.

Sometimes I think gaming is like spaghetti sauce https://www.ted.com/talks/malcolm_gladwell_choice_happiness_and_spaghetti_sauce — someone might do well to offer different subs based on types of games. I would want jrpgs and indies almost exclusively. /shrug
Re: Soapbox: This Is Why Physical Games Are Still Important to Me

For Switch we do physical if at all possible.

Re: Poll: Which Persona Game Has the Best Opening?
Golden makes me the happiest, 5 original fits the narrative the best.
Aside: I ❤️ 5 Royal and it’s my fav way to play but the extra semester imo detracts from a perfect P5 ending.
Re: Poll: Was 2023 One of the Best Ever Years for New Game Releases?
@ChrisDeku the past always seems shinier. This was an amazing year in gaming!
Re: Poll: Was 2023 One of the Best Ever Years for New Game Releases?
I wish gaming news sites did the work for us.
Did more 2023 games review score higher on average than previous years? (Were the games just better across a similar # of titles?)
Did we see significantly more games that also were quality games this year? (Eg was it a boom year?)
Was it the best year for certain platforms? (Eg maybe this was the best Nintendo year since 2017)
If we compare the top games between years which year would win?
My instinct is that yes absolutely 2023 was a banger. Best ever tho? Err… you specify the criteria for that and we can discuss.

Best month in a long time. Family wants to play Nobody Saves the World. And I want Plague Tale!
Re: Metaphor: ReFantazio Combat Is a Mix of Action and Turn-Based

Just make UE5 make sense and integrate well. It doesn’t have to have all the features. Make the controls snappy and responsive. 40fps+ please.

Re: Poll: What Will Win Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2023?
BG3 came out after ToTK so it has the advantage. I need to finish ToTK and play BG3. What a fantastic year for gaming!
Re: Poll: Did You Buy a PS Portal?
I’m not getting a Portal in 2023-2024 but if Sony can get PS5 cloud streaming on it then it could become a lower cost portable PS5.
Right now Switch 2.0 and the Steam Deck have my interest/money.

Anime Persona yes, live action no interest.
