Re: Rumour: Unannounced Splinter Cell Game Will Be Open World

JB_Whiting

Don't expect anything in the ball park of Chaos Theory, or even Black List - that Ubisoft ship sailed long ago.

Do expect a shoddy, half-broken mess with graphics 10 years out of date. I think I'm right in saying we'd all rather have a remaster of the original three.

On the optimistic side, if they can edge it closer to The Division than say.... Breakpoint (barf) then maybe it has a chance.

Re: Back 4 Blood Is Still Harder Than Intended, Developer Working On It

JB_Whiting

@KilloWertz I shared your thoughts after the beta myself, but I was completely turned around with the full release, it really is SO much fun.

The card system is fantastic, and adds a much needed depth to what L4D had, which as wonderful as that game is, seems quaint, and overly simple today. There's a layer of strategy and team synergy that wasn't there before. Having trouble on a level? Why not try mixing up your decks instead of banging your head against a wall over and over again in hopes of getting through it.

But these constant updates, nerfs, buffs, tweaks to difficulty, is going to get annoying.

Re: GTA Trilogy's Rain Is Giving Fans a Headache

JB_Whiting

So let me get this straight - R* hired these Grove Street Games to oversee this Definitiv release of their classics? And these guys I've heard, aren't exactly the bastion of remaster development, to put it mildly.

Someone get Bluepoint on the phone... oh wait, that would cost Take Two too much money.

Re: Elden Ring Closed Beta: Dates, Times, and What's Included

JB_Whiting

@The_Pixel_King I'm surprised an impressions video swayed you; the Souls series really isn't something that can lull you in by watching other people play it. You have to dive head first in yourself; you'll soon discover if you love or hate it.

Also, you own the DS remake and have yet to taste its brilliance? What are you waiting for!

Re: Round Up: Call of Duty: Vanguard Reviews Praise Fun WWII FPS

JB_Whiting

Game Informer once again handing out 9s like it's candy. It's disheartening to see CoD games consistently sit in the 80s on Metacritic and Opencritic, encouraging Acti to not really take any risks or evolve the series in any meaningful way.

I still think Infinite Warfare had the best campaign in a while.

Re: Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City Trailer Is All Prosthetics and Strawberry Jam

JB_Whiting

@Zuljaras Hypothetically speaking, let's say, if Leon was cast "accurately", aka a white guy, but wasn't in his RPD uniform, maybe he was in civilian clothes, would you immediately recognise him then?

My point is, I think the costumes do a lot of heavy lifting in terms of mirroring their game counterparts. Many, many, many characters from fictional sources have had race and gender variations in film, this is no different. I honestly don't see a problem here.

Re: Elden Ring Looks Awesome in 20 Minutes of Gameplay Action

JB_Whiting

@_seneka I get where you're coming from. While I don't agree it looks worse than BB - remember that has awful frame pacing, causing unwanted stuttering, and this will run at 4K/60fps on current gen - I think the problem is getting it to work across old hardware; I mean I understand why, Souls series is a cash cow for Bandai Namco, makes business sense. Lets just thank From for giving us such lush art direction to distract from the creaky engine!

Re: UK Sales Charts: Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Dances Into the Bestsellers

JB_Whiting

Guardians is a solid game (about half way through), but I don't quite share the showering of praise it's receiving. 90% of the game is walking, talking, occasionally squeezing through cracks in walls, and sliding down slopes. Of the six or so hours I've put into it, I reckon about 20 minutes of that was actual combat.

Also the PS5 optimisation is a mess, 1080p in performance mode, I mean c'mon!

Re: The Uncharted Movie Trailer Is Finally Here

JB_Whiting

The wider problem is that Sony is clearly NOT targeting this at the Uncharted core fans, but at the casual audience; hence why we have Tom and not say, Nathan Fillion. As much as studios bang on about being "for the fans", it's predominately the non fans that will drive its success.

That and it just looks wishy washy. It doesn't help that everything looks too "clean" and digital. Overuse of CGI in these adventure films are really starting to wear me down.

Re: Review: Back 4 Blood (PS5) - Raising a Co-Op Classic from the Dead

JB_Whiting

@nessisonett The card system appeared to be pointless, at least at first glance (in the beta), but a few hours into the campaign and you start to make some really interesting decks that work as fun modifiers for a run. Think of it as a bit like a roguelite: you start out kinda weak with a few basic cards, then as you acquire (or purchase) more powerful ones, you start to build a wildly fun deck where you have full control of how you want your character's build to be. Even failure in a run still grants you points and cards that carry over. The card aspect has ended being the most fun and engaging aspect of the game for me!

Re: Battlefield 2042 Hazard Zone Reveal Coming This Thursday

JB_Whiting

Reality came crashing down on me after about 10 minutes with the beta. EVERYTHING felt off - like someone other than DICE having a crack at BF and fumbling. The movement (too fast and frantic), shooting (lack of weight and impact), HUD (messy and confusing) and sound just didn't click, and lacked that BF feel.

In my experience with betas, the final game is only marginally different. They're going to have to do some major overhaul to the game's core mechanics in the next few weeks to get this to a place where I can call it a worthy BF sequel.

Re: Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City Looks Like a Total Cheese Fest

JB_Whiting

Yeessh. That was, something. Don't know whether to laugh or cry. I mean the song choice is super weird - just the cutting in general actually - such a sloppy trailer.

I'm worried that covering RE 1 & 2 in like 90 minutes means there's not a lot of room for tension building. Still, grab a few beers and mates and this could be so bad it's good entertainment.

Re: Round Up: Far Cry 6 Reviews Paint a Familiar Open World Picture

JB_Whiting

@tatsumi As someone who's played all instalments since the PC original, I'm burnt out by Far Cry just being "Far Cry"; I'm expecting - more hoping - that the series would involve into something interesting. After the first reveal teaser for 6 I thought, hmm maybe they're going in a different, more narratively engaging direction. But nope it's more tonal inconsistencies and a truck load of filler activities, so I might pass on this one. Each to their own though!

Re: Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin Dated for 18th March

JB_Whiting

Dipped into the new demo and while it's pretty much the same as the one released earlier, i'm still having a ton of fun with it.

For those hoping for any visual improvements, you won't find them here - I'm playing it on PS5 in "Performance" mode and there are frame drops GALORE, it can barely hold onto 60fps, coupled that with the 360/PS3 era graphics and really does hurt the eyes. I do get serious double-A vibes with this one, which is a shame as it has a £60 price tag.

Having said that the gameplay is super absorbing and addicting; the combat is fun and intense and the Job system is deep and rewarding. Fans of Nioh and Souls games in general will have a blast. I can't wait to grab it.
