@Rich33 you summed it up perfectly. PSSR is in it's infancy it's going to have teething issues. As a third party dev unless it's going to drive up sales don't rush that shizz out - wait.
It'll be refined smooth out next year in time for the big hitters (GTA etc) which was probably the end goal anyway. Rockstar will have a whole year+ with it.
@Major_Player have you got a source saying it's definitely the issue
Pop us a link over if you do I am curious.
I think it could be partially to do with it but also the hardware being rushed to market so Devs maybe haven't had as much time to work with it as they would like
There are cases where it has worked and worked well (FFVII Rebirth is one example) and some of Sony's own titles.
I don't think PSSR is solely the issue as much as it is the short amount of time Devs have had to make it work. That's the problem imo. It was rushed out to sell to people in time for the holidays.
@Markatron84 Given the sheer amount of comments here and a whole article being dedicated to it. As much as it pains me to say it unfortunately it appears a lot do take notice of metacritic user review scores.
My view they are about as useful as Rotten Tomato ratings are to Movies and TV shows.
@themightyant It's not even just politically charged bs anymore. It's influencers and celebrities creating division too.
I don't know if you are from the UK so may need to Google the example names here, but people should have freedoms to do and pick what they want. Trouble is you have for example Katie Hopkins at one end and Sam Smith at the other who go to such extremes and have such massive followings the division is almost created on social media alone outside of politics.
Now said division has come into the gaming space and it's sad really. People should just be able to enjoy a game. If you don't like it simply don't buy it. Review bombing it does nothing but cause harm to the morale of the developers, QA testers, support staff etc that work so hard to create it in the first place.
Can only imagine the chaos if GTA VI goes in a similar direction.
I think the fact it was announced at short notice in the first place told me not to expect megaton after megaton.
So with that going into it I was quite pleased. And albeit just a trailer great to see initial glimpse at a first party game for next year. I am sure there will be a few more to follow over the coming months.
Can't help but think the timing is not a coincidence. Close to getting a PS5 release. A console that is decidedly more popular in Nintys back yard than Xbox where it's been out ages and they pick now to kick off?
@Neither_scene AAA (I hate the term personally) imo shouldn't be defined by budget should be by quality. Call me old school but a good game is a good game budget irrelevant to me.
If we go by quality from what I've seen so far at least definitely Triple A and we need more like it.
Voted the free time option. Back in the day I didn't care but as responsibilities have increased I tend to shy away from games where I can't tone the difficulty down. Similarly get selective about what open world games I'll take on too.
@Medic_alert I have beaten FFVII Rebirth twice and even with chapter select and stats carrying over on the second play through I was still randomly selecting upgrades.
Games beatable only using a few abilities rest are literally pointless.
@Medic_alert Yep the one game I nearly canned off for that and I'm glad I didn't was Red Dead Redemption 2. I would have missed out on an epic but the prologue and tutorial I was so close to giving up.
@NEStalgia @Medic_alert Oh I agree with this so much and it really hit home quite recently. Got a new game had worked a 60 hour week so far thought I'll get some downtime before the next day and try this out. Got maybe 75% through a tutorial section and it was time to hit the sack ready to do it all again tomorrow.
It's sticking to a basic overused formula and relying on the brand to sell it.
I think Eurogamer are being slightly harsh singling this out for it as I am sure we could name countless other games that do that.
I think it's simply going to be one of those games that if you love Star Wars you will have a blast and if you don't you might not find much to enjoy about it.
Sony have shied away recently from showing any games that are a while out from release as they did in previous years. Astro Bot has only been recently revealed and it's out in a few months.
I think it's the right move but it's backfiring on them because of lack of communication in general. Xbox in contrast are being very vocal right now.
They are lacking a mouthpiece is the problem. Shu is in a different role now and they never really outright replaced Shawn Layden or Adam Boyes.
They need someone in place who can be out there being vocal with fans.
@BlaizeV Because as sad as it is to say it. None of them would probably sell enough numbers to the mainstream to warrant it. Which seems to be what they all aim for these days, outside of Nintendo at least.
@__Seraph Bloobers games have always felt like old school horror games but all in, good but including the bad bits awkward control schemes etc.
Ironically having a go at remaking an old school horror in that sense probably suits them. If they can recreate that old school horror atmosphere the game had the controls etc don't need to be perfect for that. So I am looking forward to this.
Let's be realistic. Without them coming out and saying it we know they have restructured to put less emphasis on the live service stuff and have more of an even split. They have been clear how their studios are set up now but doesn't take a genius to know this will now delay output from Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch and the like.
We have seen the issue before on PS and now seeing it on Xbox too Fable for example. I would much rather see the games revealed when they are close to ready ie months from release.
Secondly they have also shied away from showing CGI trailers of games that are a way off. All of the first party in this SOP due out this year but that also creates the caveat of then not showing what the key studios are working on as it's not ready.
I think we will just have to take it on the chin and temper expectations this year. I think 2025 will be a bit stronger.
I personally would rather not see logos, trailers etc for games that are miles from release.
Good news this though even though I would suspect future games are a way off it's good to know their brightest studios known for single player have been moved back to what they do best.
I think from a first party point of view particularly with the live service side that I think will have mostly been canned off now it's going to be a quiet 2024.
But with recent dev comments today and all the rumours I think Playstation is in for a big 2025 so it's important they show what's coming and a showcase right now would be just the right time to do it so I hope it's inbound.
I'll catch some backchat for this but in the case of GTA 5 Rockstar got the balance right. Quality single player experience which had replay value. Lost count of the amount of times I replayed it. Then an online they could tap into and make all of that cash the others were milking.
As long as they don't dilute the single player side of GTA 6 or worse integrate the two. I'd be happy with that.
Always going to be divisive. I think there is a habit to review this as a "game" whereas it's more just an interactive experience. Probably why it's also free.
Not tried it yet but I'll probably still give it a bash.
Looking forward to Rollerdrome. Didn't pick it up on Game Pass as I prefer Playstation Pads for anything with skating/blading involved so might give this a crack now.
@Sakai it will increase competition but it may also accelerate industry consolidation which ultimately is bad for the consumer.
No one knows which way it will go until the deal goes through so its fear of the unknown at this point but if it does, it will hurt the consumers you support.
@HonestHick Agree. It was always going to go through and despite any posturing from Sony they have ultimately done what is best for business anyway. Whole load of drama for nothing.
Regardless of what happens next any consolidation worries aside. I doubt either the FTC or CMA will get involved anymore now so any other deals on this scale will probably get far less scrutiny.

Re: Gamers Are Reportedly More Interested in Watching Games Than Actually Playing Them
@DanteDevilHunter Depends. I've been known to watch game vids or walkthroughs if it's something on a console I don't own that I am curious about.
The data isn't isolated to games someone may have already purchased so could be 101 reasons for the viewing.
For me it's the above plus the odd puzzle hint and review. I wouldn't say I watch them more than I play them though.

Re: PS5's Lack of Tentpole Exclusives Isn't Hurting Engagement, Says Sony
They were upfront about a lack of first party this year though not necessarily about the reasons why. Bound to be budget and other factors.
All of the main first party devs have all but confirmed they are well underway on new stuff so hopefully we see and hear more about that next year.
Re: UK Video Game Retailer GAME Will Reportedly Stop Stocking Video Games
@Saucymonk Yep. Hence it would be sad when they become the only physical high street retailer.
Re: UK Video Game Retailer GAME Will Reportedly Stop Stocking Video Games
@Sakai He is invested in keeping the UK high street going ill give him that even if he is a money grabbing goat.
Re: UK Video Game Retailer GAME Will Reportedly Stop Stocking Video Games
There will come a point where the only place to get physical copies of games will be supermarkets or selected online retailers and that will be sad.

I don't mind the linear approach here if the gameplay backs it up. The first 3 Mass Effects had the balance right.

Sounds very familiar either way.
Re: Dragon Age: The Veilguard Reveal Has Utterly Torn Fan Opinion as Trailer Gets Slaughtered
I think the fact no gameplay has been shown and it's out this year does not bode well at all.
Even if EA planned to show it themselves at their own thing this teaser doesn't create a very great first impression.

Re: Assassin's Creed Shadows Reveal Trailer Is Already the Most Disliked in Series History
Very odd seems to be around the lead being White.
To those people I'd say check out the Shogun Series on Disney+ with the Anajin. A white key character can fit in a Japanese setting.
Or go further back and watch The Samurai film with Tom Cruise.
I agree with other posters it's probably the algorithm misleading but if not the hate is rather over the top tbh.
Can't win here.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 528
Just got to Gongaga on FFVII Rebirth so probably dive back in to that with some travelling back to take on some unlocked Queens Blood opponents.
Outside of that might dip back in to Stellar Blade in between making the most of the sunny weather.
Enjoy the weekend!

@michaelf on the UK one now? I'd stopped checking a bit ago sound lad thanks for the heads up there.
I'm the same up in 5 hours so will have to wait until probably after the football tomorrow.

@awp69 said shortly after the state of play airs. So probably not completely immediate. I keep looking every 5 mins lol reckon it'll be an hour or so.
