Re: Just 70MB of Data Contained on the Modern Warfare 2 Disc

Vil

Well, that's what I've been saying for years now ...Actual physical video games are slowly becoming a thing of the past at this point (except maybe on Switch).

Buying a disc is essentially a glorified license key you have to insert every time you want to play, even if the entire game may be on there. And I'm all for physical media, always have been (though they could use some more environmentally friendly packaging).

It's very sad, but almost every single game needs an avalanche of updates and patches before they're even finished now anyway, so what can you do?

This, though, is on a whole other level and a complete waste of resources. Just make it a paper disc with a download code at that point, or better yet, a simple voucher. Unbelievable.

Re: God of War Ragnarok on PS5 Runs at Up to 120fps, Four Graphics Modes

Vil

40 FPS mode, nice! It was fantastic in Ratchet and Clank and felt great to play, and is probably the best compromise if you want the best of both worlds (like me). Could barely tell a difference from 60 in a living room setting, so I loved it. If you have access to a HDMI 2.1 port, I highly recommend it.

Re: Return to Silent Hill with a New Movie from Cristophe Gans

Vil

Great news! Loved the first movie personally, very atmospheric and very nice direction throughout with no obvious reliance on cheap jumpscares anywhere, unlike most mainstream modern horror trash. I have high hopes. At least it can't possibly get worse than the second movie.

Also, (insert Sean Bean reference here).

Re: As Energy Prices Soar, Consider an Alternative to Video Streaming on PS5, PS4

Vil

I only use my streaming services (and YouTube) through my Apple TV 4K. That was the only reason I got it, besides AirPlay with my MacBook, which is absolutely rad.

I'd say as long as you're not using an RTX 3090 or 4090 for video streaming, it's not a huge dealbreaker, though. I've heard some horror stories about those.

Edit: I just looked up the power consumption for my good old Wii U I've been using over the weekend, and it's amazing how efficient it is for such old PowerPC- based hardware. Makes me feel much better about diving into more Pikmin goodness this coming week.

Re: PS Plus Premium's Logic Doesn't Even Make Sense to Sony

Vil

They should ditch it and stick with Extra as the highest tier IMO, or just mash them together to simplify their confusing mess. Retro games should have been a separate cheap subscription with some actual effort put behind it, but that will probably never happen as long as Jim Ryan calls the shots.

Re: Need for Speed Unbound Is Unlike Any Arcade Racer You've Seen Before

Vil

That looks amazing! Haven't seen this much style in 'realistic' AAA games since the early 2000's ...Hoping it becomes a trend! Not everything has to strive for hyper realism, especially when things that are heavily stylised age so much better. Just look at Wind Waker for instance ...Very divisive at first but aged like fine wine compared to any realistic graphics from that era.

Re: PlayStation Bigwigs Won't Shut Up About PC, Smartphones

Vil

At this point, I'll probably just get a PC for the next generation ...The PS5 ain't worth it for just Ratchet & Clank and Demon's Souls, both of which will probably also show up on PC eventually. What's left after that? The SSD, sure ...and the convenience ...but you still have to pay to play online ...and you're locked into the ecosystem ...The bad is just starting to outweigh the good now ...At least with Nintendo, you can't play any of their games officially anywhere else.

Re: Talking Point: We Need to Discuss This Horizon Zero Dawn PS5 Remaster

Vil

I don't want to discuss this ...I've at least learned that much at this point when it comes to modern PlayStation. I like Nintendo, so I know just how bad it could get, be it overly zealous fans or tone deaf, creatively bankrupt corporate greed ...so I choose to avoid any further hot takes for my own mental health. All I want to say about it is ...I hate it. Cut it out, please.

I also hate blasting others ...I want to discuss the actual joy of playing games, which is probably why I'm increasingly gravitating towards purely retro stuff, as all these modern controversies are really starting to wear me out.

That is all. Thank you.

Re: Embracer CEO Doesn't Expect a Great Return on Investment from Saints Row

Vil

So happy to see the game fail. It was truly pathetic. Hope they've learnt something from this and put some actual quality effort into making something that isn't decades behind and that people actually want to play next time.

Also, I can't even remember the last time I've seen a video game with such god awful writing. As a writer myself, it really, really fires me up, and is probably one of the biggest reasons I am celebrating this game's failure. I absolutely hate it.

Re: Resident Evil 4 Remake Is Now Coming to PS4 as Well

Vil

PS4 is the new PS2. It's fine, though ...In this economy and with the massive price increases everywhere and on everything (especially on the PS5 itself even), I've slightly changed my opinion on this. While the PS5 does really need those big technology showcases to justify it, I do get that for millions upon millions who want to play these latest games but can't, won't or don't have any means to upgrade (which I totally get), these ports are necessary at the moment. The world is going through hell right now, so anything to make more people's lives just the slightest bit brighter with some fun new games coming to their platform, I'm all for.

Re: Reaction: Publishers Are Getting Worse at Nintendo Direct-Style Livestreams

Vil

I still remember Nintendo's Wii U- themed direct in January 2013, just two months after release, and how shockingly transparent it was. You could instantly tell that they didn't sell as many consoles as they expected, and so they made an entire presentation just for upcoming releases, some that would't even see the light of day until half a decade later. Don't forget, it was that very presentation where Breath of the Wild was first announced.

Almost all they had were basic Power Point slides, text and a few very early beta images of a remake of Wind Waker and a Yoshi game that didn't even have a name. It may not have been reassuring back then, especially for me with a brand new console and no new games for months. Despite this, however, I will never forget that Direct in particular, just because of how shockingly transparent and down to Earth it felt for such a massive company. They had almost nothing, but wanted so desperately to show that the Wii U would get games ...eventually.

I hope you're doing well, Iwata- san ...wherever you are.

Re: Reaction: Publishers Are Getting Worse at Nintendo Direct-Style Livestreams

Vil

Oh, yeah, definitely. Though, I'd argue, while the average Nintendo Direct has way better pacing and gets to the point in a much more 'direct' way (pun intended), they are just rapid fire commercials at the end of the day with the same overly cheerful voiceover every single time. During the Iwata days, they actually felt very real and personal. Kind of reflects the whole company nowadays though, to be fair ...but sure, they are still doing it much better than everyone else.

I think it's mostly because everyone else tries to make E3 showcases spread out across the entire year. Nobody wants that. E3 was only bearable because everyone was doing it at the same time over the course of a single week, so you could treat it as a yearly tradition, laughing at the massive corporations embarrassing themselves while also getting all the good stuff you want. When it's spread out like this, people just won't care as much anymore, and thus, the corporation behind it that obviously doesn't care about anything except your money is all that remains for most, pretty much.

E3 was so fun and exciting every year because it was so concentrated, and the live shows weren't pre- recorded fluff pieces, but live shows with a stage where things could go wrong, which gave it a certain "so bad it's good"- esque charm. Now, all that remains is the advertisement.

Re: Ubisoft Joins $70 Game Train, Skull and Bones the First

Vil

Charging a $70 (or an outrageous €80) premium for a single game should come with a guarantee that it will have zero microtransactions and be a full, complete, uncompromising experience from beginning to end (something that most people today sadly don't even remember was in fact the universal norm just a decade or two ago). Anything less than that, you're just jumping on it for the increased profits. It's so very sad and nasty, but this was inevitably going to happen. Almost all AAA games today are really just glorified casinos anyway, so this is really just a price increase for the entry ticket.

Thanks again, Sony. You may make a lot of games that are worth that premium, but most others sure are not, nor will they ever. Most should at best be free to play with how outrageously greedy and absolutely shameless this industry has become.

Re: Assassin's Creed Mirage Sneaks to PS5, PS4 in 2023, Priced at $50

Vil

They can charge less when it's packed with delicious microtransactions that'll make up the difference. I sure won't be touching it ...I try to avoid all these games to not support the practice.

Sorry, just me. I just can't get excited for any game with Ubisoft's logo on it, even if it's going back to basics this time.
