Re: The Game Awards Is Getting Ripped for Urging Award Winners to Wrap It Up

johncalmc

It was really bad. Watching him blast through three or four awards at a time without any celebration just so he could get to the next ad was grim. And even when winners did get a chance to speak they were so rushed they barely had a chance to say anything of substance or actually be celebrated for their achievements. It was actually pretty sad.

Re: Poll: Was The Game Awards 2023 Worth Watching?

johncalmc

As an awards show it was terrible, with more time given to a guy explaining how he hurt his ankle playing basketball than most of the actual awards. Dreadful stuff.

As an E3 Winter Edition it was okay. Some alright announcements and nice trailers, but the pacing was all over the shop because they had to keep interrupting the trailers to pretend it was an awards show and talk to puppets.

Basically, I think Geoff either needs to do a Christmas E3 or an awards show. This is both but not good at either.

Re: Final Five Games Battle It Out for The Game Awards Players' Choice

If games that weren't even released this year can get into this vote, then we should organise an amusing trolling of the game awards for next year by getting loads of people to vote for like Treasure Island Dizzy or something and see if we can get it to win a game award. It'll be like that time Rage Against The Machine got the Christmas number one, but loads better because Treasure Island Dizzy is involved.

Re: Talking Point: Is Bungie Really the Right Developer to Aid Sony's Live-Service Push?

johncalmc

The second this acquisition was announced I said it was the pointless acquisition of all time. Bungie is a totally overvalued developer that somehow continues to fail upwards, presumably because a lot of people got Halo for christmas when they were kids and the rose-tinted glasses are fully engaged.

Even if you like Destiny, divorce yourself from that for a second and think about it as objectively as you can. Destiny was mediocre on launch, middling reviews, and it got better over time. Destiny 2 learned nothing from that, also launched mediocre, made many mistakes, and then it improved over time.

But the fanbase for the franchise never seems happy. From the outside looking in - I played Destiny but haven't played 2 - it seems like everyone who likes the games likes them in spite of themselves. All people do is complain about it. This weapon sucks now, everything costs too much, not enough story, pointless pvp, whatever.

Maybe I'm unlucky and only see the people moaning but it seems like Bungie constantly gets it wrong with Destiny, and then couple that with the cratering revenues, the lay-offs...

Sony bought a dud with Bungie. Total waste of money. And they shouldn't be letting Bungie dictate what other teams making live service games are doing, because from my perspective, the only reason their live service game is a success is because of brand loyalty.

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Like a Dragon Gaiden?

johncalmc

I actually rate this game a lot. A lot a lot. I like the side content being more woven into the main story. I think it's got fun villains. I love how it actually makes 6 and 7 better games by filling in the gaps. And I think the last hour or so is one of my favourite parts of any Yakuza game. I was grinning from ear to ear during that final confrontation.

Re: Poll: Spider-Man 2 PS5 Bugs are Apparently a Real Problem, But Have You Had Any?

johncalmc

I had mountains of bugs. It was bugland. Probably the least polished first party game I can remember from PlayStation. None were game breakers. I only had one actual crash. But I couldn't go an hour without a pedestrian floating by, or coffees hovering in mid-air because the table didn't load, or Peter Parker's hair randomly disappearing etc.

I didn't really care. It was still great.
