@Eadgar Unfortunately it seems that the PS5 and PS4 versions of the game will have worse input delay at least until Sony remembers that they promised VRR support for PS5. With that Vsync can be turned off (if your monitor supports VRR of course) and input delay can be reduced by about 3 frames.
At least that's from my limited understanding of what's going on.
@Nepp67 Actually the Japanese site does not refer to Testament as male: third person pronouns are ungendered in Japanese and thus the default translation is "him," the English pronoun often used when gender is unknown (the manga "Land of the Lustrous" has had similar issues related to this). Using Google translate on the site simply uses this default gendering, making it seem the site is saying "he" in relation to Testament.
What we do know, however, is that first-person pronouns are largely gendered: in the Japanese trailer Testament uses a first-person pronoun - either "watashi" or "atashi." Both of these are feminine, which when combined with the way the English site describes Testament seems to make them much more likely to be non-binary than male.
Sadly won't be getting it. I think it's actually a great time to rerelease as Part 6 of the anime is probably wrapping up this year, which is the last part the game actually gives any real significance to (parts 7 is sped through and Part 8 is nearly untouched). Got a (Star) Platinum on the original PS3 game.
@CthulhuFhtagn oooh boy gonna have to disagree about Nier being lifeless. Boring is more subjective imo, so I'll let that go, but lifeless is not a way I'd describe either Nier game.
I will be fair and say that Nier: Replicant may feel lifeless if you're comparing it to recent games, but don't forget it was a PS3/Xbox 360 game released in 2010. For perspective, Infamous was a new game at the time.
@GymratAmarillo It absolutely is enough to affect Evo, unfortunately. Using 2019 Evo as the last in-person Evo: Smash Ultimate had about 3500 entrants with the second-place game, SFV, having about 1900. Total attendance was about 14,300, putting smash at about 25% of total entrants alone. It was also both the game with the most viewers and had the highest number of hours watched, though not by as an extreme margin.
This hurts Evo in a big way, and is generally bad for the Smash community as a whole. If by "not affect" you mean "It won't shut down Evo," you're correct, but it does reduce it's profitability and heavily reduces engagement. Losing potentially a full quarter of your attendance and 33% of your viewership is not what you want to see.
@anoyonmus It's a whole circuit, not just a single tournament. It's like the Capcom Pro Your in a way, which has no issues allowing their game in Evo and still holding their circuit. There was no logistical reason to not have Smash at Evo as players would have flown out for both as they do for most other tourneys. They still seemingly allow Summit, Genesis, CEO, and just about all other tourneys but Evo, despite having their own Circuit.
I think there's a good chance Nintendo just doesn't want to have Smash at a Sony event. That's very in line with how they tend to do business anyways. Either that or it's another attempt at controlling the Smash scene with an iron fist.
Of course, it's their volition to disallow it, but as a member of the competitive Smash community I really hate how Nintendo tries to heavily moderate, monopolize, and often destroy, the competitive Smash community. They have a long history of specifically targeting Smash in a tournament setting.
@anoyonmus Smash Ultimate and Melee (usually at least a side-event).
Incredibly unfortunate for Evo though. Smash has always been one of the most, if not the most, entered and watched entry at Evo. It's actually a pretty big blow to lose it.
It's going to be... interesting with the 3d, but I'm glad I didn't buy it on Switch. I'm playing SMTV which is honestly not running the best either, but my hopes for that one on PS4/5 would have been a lot less realistic.
Just finished Va-11 Hall-A a short while ago and honestly it did leave a cyberpunk-bartender-sized hole in me. Literally would probably not have thought twice about this game otherwise but now I'm intrigued 😂
@HeeHo I don't see anything wrong with the title - it's a PlayStation-centric website using a punchy headline when writing about a game traditionally associated with PS coming back from it's vacation on the Switch. Especially since the game is known for having persistent performance problems on the popular portable platform that is the Switch.
Don't get me wrong, there have been strange/off headlines, but I don't feel this is one of them.
@UltimateOtaku91 Honestly FF9 holds up incredibly well graphically because of its aesthetic decisions. Gameplay-wise it's nearly the staple of turn-based combat so it's not all that rough to give the original a go.
As much as I'm over acquisitions of independent developers at this point, considering it already happened I just hope Destiny goes back to being a really fun experience. Something about Destiny 2 left me with so little hope for the franchise.
@Uncharted2007 Arcades we're still big for both having gaming communities and providing the type of games you can't play as easily from home (games with weird gimmick controls and crane games for example). In fact crane games were still really popular there when I went a couple years back.
By FAR the biggest problem with PS Now is the lack of DLC available for Asura's Wrath. Everything else pales in comparison to not being able to finish that anime disguised as a game because the ending is locked behind DLC.
I'm only being half sarcastic. Would love to be able to play it through again w/o buying a PS3.
@UltimateOtaku91 Bethesda gets memed on to death for their handling of Skyrim and its re-releases. But ultimately both have their problems. If you somehow think people don't find Bethesda's practice of just re-releasing Skyrim annoying/scummy, then you've not been on the internet long. At least most of the time they "add more content," even if it's still not worth full price with it.
@dasd2 Yeah, there's absolutely no reason to buy a PlayStation anymore if a previously exclusive game may, potentially, eventually also go to PC 3 years after launch.
@TheRantingNinja It doesn't really need it. MHW frame rate is unlocked with a cap at 60 fps. It also has a framerate, resolution, and graphics priority modes in the settings as well as HDR. Setting the game to Resolution mode is the best option for PS5 because that allows 4k, and because of the extra power it stays at 60 fps anyways even without being in framerate mode.
So 4k 60fps with HDR is what it currently can do on PS5. The only "improvement" I could see is bumping it up even more to 120 fps, and honestly I feel the PS5 would have difficulty with all the stuff on screen during hunts at that framerate.
It really is "licensing priced." I felt Sword Art's second arc was so bad that I really lost interest in the rest of the series. No real interest in this DLC either, despite liking Tales of Arise.
Would have been Nickelodeon All Stars but I'll probably be playing it on Switch for the Smash-like controls. Honestly some good picks here but nothing really I'll be buying. Story of Seasons runs incredibly poorly on Switch when it really shouldn't, so idk if it'll be much better on PS4.
@Matroska I was pointing that Symphonia was a massive hit since I felt your comment implied that it somehow sold poorly. To be fair as well, Arise has sold 1mil copies across 5 platforms, so I feel just using the initial GameCube version for Symphonia is a bit inaccurate to say the least. About the equivalent of only counting Arise's PS4 sales I'd say.
Nonetheless I can just be overly pedantic. Arise is a MASSIVE win for the Tales franchise, and I hope they don't let that momentum dwindle. An anime series could be good, but I'd have to wait until I beat the game to see if I'd want a spinoff or sequel. I also can't stop imagining playing a Tales of Destiny remake on this engine, but that's a pipe dream lol
@Matroska Actually, when looking at sales, Symphonia is the best selling Tales game. Despite being released on GameCube, PS2 (Japan only), PS4, and PC, it still sold the most units on Gamecube. Then again, Nintendo actively marketed the game heavily. I think the real kicker here is "If you make a great game, also make sure people know it's coming out."
@nomither6 Florida (particularly Central), the tri-state area, and west coast (I believe specifically south Cali) are the the USA's strongest Smash regions if memory serves me.
Honestly you can probably find some scene for big games like Smash unless you live outside of cities in the mid-west or some equivalent. Alternatively, you can join a discord or community for your game to find people in your region, or play a game with good online like Guilty Gear.
Just type the name of your game + your state into Google and you might be surprised. I just looked up what the Smash scene in Iowa looks like for example, and there's a few players - even professional ones.
As someone who used to frequent Smash tournaments and keeps up with the competitive scene, the amount of specific call-outs to how they've built on remixed, and deviated from mechanics found in the franchise is insane.
Wavedashing is basically the crux of movement options from Smash Melee, canceling dash attacks into other moves seems like a remix of a (kinda) exploit from Smash Brawl, and many of the movement options seemed to be direct expansions to Smash's movement options. The casual party gamer probably doesn't care too much about throwing out retreating aerial attacks, but in Smash it can be difficult to consistently do it and it makes a big difference for neutral and defensive play to be able to pull it off without killing your momentum.
I don't even know if I'm gonna play this game, but I am absolutely blown away by the amount of competitive detail going into it. Living in a region that lives and breathes Super Smash Bros, it'll be hilarious if a scene develops for this game around here.
@mazz Honestly not the most massive complaint, but the Trance system of FF9 seemed, imo, to be the worst "limit break/overdrive" system of any Final Fantasy I played - particularly since it plays a decently sized role in the story. It's "alright" for a few characters and just plain bad/redundant for others, and rarely felt special outside of the scripted fights. For example, Steiner gets 3x damage, largely making his trance a time to just spam Attack. Zidane gets 1.5x damage, so unless you need his multi-target Dyne attacks then you'll once again just spam Attack in the late-game. Quina gets to eat enemies a bit earlier, otherwise just 1.5x damage boost. Because of the 9999 damage cap, the boost Trance gives you often just becomes about using Attack (particularly for the 3 mentioned, Amarant, and Freya, unless you need jump for multiple enemies/tough encounters).
Tack on the fact the state cannot be saved for when it's most beneficial, and you don't even really get to feel too strategic for when you do get to use it. The whole system just seems poorly implemented.
I understand you may consider this somewhat nitpicky, but take into account how much more often people interact with the trance system over the card game.
The game itself also feels generally too easy, but that's for another time.
@MFTWrecks Funny thing is that though this is a 2D fighter for all practical purposes, the models are all 3D. Arc System Works has cracked the code on how to make them look both hyper-stylized and great.
@nomither6 The primary complaint about the lobby was not the design but specifically the clunky combination of teleporting to random spots, unintuitive menus, and lack of rematch options. Literally all of those were addressed or fixed.
The style is more of an aesthetic thing anyways - one that you also don't really have to interact with considering online training mode.
Super late recommendation, I know, but MAKE SURE to level up the Prayer materia. Whole-party healing without any MP usage is incredibly useful once you hit hard mode.
I'm actually surprised that I-No was the choice for final character. I would have expected a slightly more straightforward character (in terms of movement in particular). Still hyped for her even if I won't play her though.
@LiterallyDoNotCare Gamepass is a fantastic perk for people who want to play a wide variety of games but not shell out for each one. I don't have an Xbox but I do have PS Now and honestly I'm surprised at how good it is as a foundation for a service.
That being said, the fact that it doesn't affect the price of Gamepass Ultimate simply makes it more appealing for people who may get an Xbox in the future as an option instead of just getting Xbox Live Gold - as the article did point out.
Considering the anticipation that this year might ramp up production of the next-gen consoles, I can see the reasoning to doing this ahead of what they might anticipate to be a year full of console sales.
@KidBoruto @Darth_Stofi The game also came out at a time when the largest (I think?) video game market in the world could really resonate with the messages in the game. In a nation where people felt that corruption is subtly (or not so subtly to some) eating away at their government, people in power are exploiting it with relatively little repercussions, and a powerlessness to do much about it was felt by many in the populace, a game comes out that allows you to fight back against the unfairness and really do something about it - at least in a fictional world.
I'm not specifically speaking from experience either, it was a general sentiment you got from many people who really got into the game at the time of its release. Even when Royal came out, I kept hearing people talk about how its core themes had become even more relevant to them.
@zupertramp Yeah, I agree a game can definitely be well-received without an emphasis on story. I just know FF7R in particular is a very divisive example on either side because people had very strong opinions on the ways it was different from the original.
The original guy saying that great gameplay is panned without a good story is just objectively wrong. Doom Eternal is a good example. Rocket League also has a 9/10 on this site but it's not exactly a Cold War era political drama focused on nuclear weapons and the space race.
@zupertramp "their number 2 game is Final Fantasy whatever. Are people praising that for its quality storytelling?"
Honestly imo FF7 Remake had fantastic storytelling without the whole "whispers" bs (which just just them making a very ballsy point anyways). People saying the storytelling in the game was bad overall are probably conflating not liking the game with it being bad.
There's spmething about this game I can't quite shake - like it just looks like a phone game for some reason. Like it's one of those "pc quality graphics!" kind of phone game that tries to show off a product it's not really selling. Having seen more I'm ever so slowly warming up to it in concept, but something about it feels almost fake.
I'm almost positive it's nearly 100% due to that awful trailer they had during the PS5 reveal. Having not heard much of the game beforehand and then being hit with that "totally epic gamers unite" - style trailer made me immediately write the game off.
@Porco 12's main problem for me was its lack of a more mature protagonist. Vaan doesn't even really belong in the story, and you can see by how little effect he has and how few lines he's given that he was an afterthought (and Penelo for that matter - both of them being the last characters added to the game development-wise). Balthier or Basch as the protagonist would have made the game a good notch better, but Vaan appealed more to the young crowd.
My mini-rant being over, though, I am rather excited for this FF - regardless of T or M rating it feels like it'll be something new-ish.
I was saddened somewhat by this until I remembered that all these games will get released on PC (and probably gamepass) as well so as long as I have a half-decent internet connection I'll likely be fine ¯(ツ)/¯ yeah the visuals will suffer a bit but I won't
I feel it is a missed opportunity for some free good press, but I'm almost positive it's just out of a desire to not have a potential avenue for people to mod it. The PS5 could run ps1 and ps2 games with just some code (after all, computers have been easily able to emulate these for years). PS3 makes the most sense as it has incredibly unique hardware, though.
Or it could be they just want to resell us the games. After all, any ps1 & 2 games would have to be used at this point, which means Sony sees no money from their sale.
I honestly do believe there's a balance to be had in all of this. For example, if a game will simply not work with older hardware, then they should not have to worry about the older hardware holding them back. But if the game would work by just scaling back some parts graphically, I see no real reason a company should limit itself to only the newest hardware at launch. That's not to say we should be releasing TLOU2 on PS3 this late in the game or some obvious extreme like that, but many of the games coming out will not take full advantage of the new hardware for a while. In that time, if they wouldn't play or look too much different on PS4, then it makes sense to support both.
Obviously this guy is just running some marketing talk to support their own business model - it's not "counter to what gaming is all about", it's simply a marketing decision.
@Wazeddie22 The game is (or at least was) 100% doable solo. The gameplay mechanics are slightly different though: Solo you get a moogle to carry your chalice for you and can combine magic into more powerful versions through the menu (i.e. blizzard + blizzard = blizzara), but in multiplayer you have to cart the chalice around w/o a moogle and can't combine magic on your own. You have to cast magic in the same spot as a teammate in order to use higher level spells, with your timing + number of party members determining the strength [i.e you and up to 3 friends both cast blizzard on the same spot. 2 users normal timing = blizzara, perfect timing = blizzaga / 3 users normal timing = blizzaga, perfect timing = blizzaja (strongest version iirc)].
Some of those spells can only be used in multiplayer, but are not needed to beat the game.
Also I'm pretty sure having a phoenix down in your loadout revives you in solo play, but in multiplayer one has to be used on you by a party member.
@drd7of14 Well I meant specifically the ability to run PS1/ps2 discs. I know they have licensing issues when it comes to digital content, but I can't see how you'd need to get licencing rights for every individual game discs just to support the physical format - and at this point including it would be at practically no cost to Sony.
The only reason I see them not doing it is for security reasons. Emulators may open up new avenues for "modding" the PS5 and Sony's probably not exactly thrilled at the prospect.
Personally I don't see much reason for a lack of backwards compatibility for PS1 + 2 games considering any computer can load them up no problem with an emulator. PS3 obviously would not be too feasible considering the Cell architecture.

@MFTWrecks Funny thing is that though this is a 2D fighter for all practical purposes, the models are all 3D. Arc System Works has cracked the code on how to make them look both hyper-stylized and great.

Re: Guilty Gear Strive Second Open Beta Out Now on PS5, PS4
@nomither6 The primary complaint about the lobby was not the design but specifically the clunky combination of teleporting to random spots, unintuitive menus, and lack of rematch options. Literally all of those were addressed or fixed.
The style is more of an aesthetic thing anyways - one that you also don't really have to interact with considering online training mode.
Re: Final Fantasy VII Remake All Weapons: Character Builds and Best Materia
Super late recommendation, I know, but MAKE SURE to level up the Prayer materia. Whole-party healing without any MP usage is incredibly useful once you hit hard mode.
Re: Guilty Gear Strive's Final Launch Character Is I-No, and Her Redesign Rocks
I'm actually surprised that I-No was the choice for final character. I would have expected a slightly more straightforward character (in terms of movement in particular). Still hyped for her even if I won't play her though.
Re: Poll: What Other First-Party PS4 Game Needs a PS5 Update?
I found HZD pretty boring so Bloodborne would be the obvious choice for me. If it wasn't limited to 1st party then it would be Monster Hunter World.
Re: PS Plus Looks Like a Steal When Compared to New Xbox Live Gold Prices
Re: Persona 5 Royal Was the Highest Rated Game of 2020 on Metacritic
Re: Game of the Year: #1 - The Last of Us: Part II
@zupertramp Yeah, I agree a game can definitely be well-received without an emphasis on story. I just know FF7R in particular is a very divisive example on either side because people had very strong opinions on the ways it was different from the original.
The original guy saying that great gameplay is panned without a good story is just objectively wrong. Doom Eternal is a good example. Rocket League also has a 9/10 on this site but it's not exactly a Cold War era political drama focused on nuclear weapons and the space race.
Re: Game of the Year: #1 - The Last of Us: Part II
@zupertramp "their number 2 game is Final Fantasy whatever. Are people praising that for its quality storytelling?"
Honestly imo FF7 Remake had fantastic storytelling without the whole "whispers" bs (which just just them making a very ballsy point anyways). People saying the storytelling in the game was bad overall are probably conflating not liking the game with it being bad.
Re: All PS5 Apps
Glad Crunchyroll is on but I wonder why VRV hasn't been confirmed when it's literally the same company
Re: PlayStation Signs Strategic Partnership with Spanish Football Team Real Madrid
@ShaiHulud A British word that Americans also adopted 😉
Re: Godfall's Cinematic Opening Is Way More Hype Than We Expected
There's spmething about this game I can't quite shake - like it just looks like a phone game for some reason. Like it's one of those "pc quality graphics!" kind of phone game that tries to show off a product it's not really selling. Having seen more I'm ever so slowly warming up to it in concept, but something about it feels almost fake.
I'm almost positive it's nearly 100% due to that awful trailer they had during the PS5 reveal. Having not heard much of the game beforehand and then being hit with that "totally epic gamers unite" - style trailer made me immediately write the game off.
Re: Final Fantasy 16 Targeting a Mature Age Rating
@Porco 12's main problem for me was its lack of a more mature protagonist. Vaan doesn't even really belong in the story, and you can see by how little effect he has and how few lines he's given that he was an afterthought (and Penelo for that matter - both of them being the last characters added to the game development-wise). Balthier or Basch as the protagonist would have made the game a good notch better, but Vaan appealed more to the young crowd.
My mini-rant being over, though, I am rather excited for this FF - regardless of T or M rating it feels like it'll be something new-ish.
Re: Final Fantasy 16 Targeting a Mature Age Rating
@Matroska Funnily enough, the demo for FF8 was rated M in the States due to language and such. It was toned down for the full release though.
Re: Maybe Don't Get Your Hopes Up for Future Bethesda Games on PS5
I was saddened somewhat by this until I remembered that all these games will get released on PC (and probably gamepass) as well so as long as I have a half-decent internet connection I'll likely be fine ¯(ツ)/¯ yeah the visuals will suffer a bit but I won't
Re: The Dream Is Dead: PS5 Will Not Play PS3, PS2, or PS1 Games
I feel it is a missed opportunity for some free good press, but I'm almost positive it's just out of a desire to not have a potential avenue for people to mod it. The PS5 could run ps1 and ps2 games with just some code (after all, computers have been easily able to emulate these for years). PS3 makes the most sense as it has incredibly unique hardware, though.
Or it could be they just want to resell us the games. After all, any ps1 & 2 games would have to be used at this point, which means Sony sees no money from their sale.
Re: Xbox Boss Implies PS5 Exclusives Are 'Counter to What Gaming Is About'
I honestly do believe there's a balance to be had in all of this.
Re: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Details New Features, Reveals Free 'Lite' Edition
Re: PS5 Backwards Compatibility Testing Still Underway for 'Over 4000' PS4 Games
Re: PS5 Backwards Compatibility Testing Still Underway for 'Over 4000' PS4 Games
Personally I don't see much reason for a lack of backwards compatibility for PS1 + 2 games considering any computer can load them up no problem with an emulator. PS3 obviously would not be too feasible considering the Cell architecture.
