PS5 offers what made gaming on SNES made so great for me: fluid 60 fps gaming (okay, 50 fps PAL back then) and minimal loading times. And developers embraced that! Practically every TV in the world supports 60 fps. Why going back to the inferior 30 fps?
@NEStalgia OK, didn’t know that PSVR2 was Sony Japan driven. Fortunately, SIE is now under a stronger control of Sony Group, and what I‘ve seen so far is a „We must clean up here“. This can have good or bad effects on their VR activities. I‘d hope for the better.
@NEStalgia You‘re right, Grounded would be a good fit for PSVR2. And Sony supports this with bringing PSVR2 to PC. I ask myself what Sony was thinking back then: „Let’s bring a new 500 $ accessory plus a small title from a support team plus a GT7 update. That should do it.“
These are professional Google devs, and everyone knows that. They did what is usual in the professional space, and Sony would have fixed the bugs nevertheless. So I don’t see a big problem here.
@ReNik PS5 is wired to a dedicated Wifi router which is only connected to the Portal over a distance of 5 m, on a 5 GHz Wifi channel which no other router uses in the whole neighborhood. Ergo: There cannot be a better configuration. I‘m just sensitive on frametime issues and latency. Compression artifacts are the least annoying problem for me.
Nice to have this improvement, but bad image quality is the smallest of my complaints with the Portal. Here in order:
1. Sound lags more than video, both are out of sync. Very annoying and maybe not that hard to fix.
2. Permanently dropping frames
3. Input lag
4. Image quality
UPDATE: The sound lag wasn’t fixed. Frames are still dropping.
@Muttt I wasn’t a PS gamer back then, and I believe you. When, would you say, ended this Golden Age? At the end of 2018, when offline play for PS Now started?
With many games offering dynamic resolutions and/or unlocked framerates with more than 60 fps in VRR mode, many games will get the „Enhanced“ batch without even touching the code, rendering this batch almost useless for highlighting significant enhancements.
@Dragon83 Sounds like a good plan to me. And the best: You can focus on the very best games, with much discount (compared to the price at launch, or preowned copies), and fully patched. Enjoy!
@Icey664 Okay, a bit more practice could help. For the text size: I‘m playing on PS Portal (extra lag makes it some kind of „hard mode“) and increased the text and HUD size to max. But this doesn’t include the text size for loot, „press R2 to open“, these stuff. Obviously, devs and testers sit in front of computer displays.
@Zenos If you define „anti-woke“ by „grab em by the p*ssy“, then yes, you can call this game anti-woke. Btw, most games aren’t woke imo, even a TLoUP2 has not a bold „only this is the right livelihood“ attitude, but displays a more nuanced picture.
That‘s this guy who celebrated his retirement at London Studio, and five days later he send them to a kind of „retirement“ as well, as one of his last major decisions.
Why should you celebrate someone with this attitude?
For me, it’s not about the decision, but about the style. Big Jimbo has the backbone of a worm.
@get2sammyb And for the failed games, many studios will suffer, by losing their best staff or getting closed entirely just months after the fail. Imaging going to a casino with 5000 quids, for which you worked a few months. And while others put here 100, there 100 over the course of an evening, you enter the room, go straight to the roulette table, and put all your jetons on red or on black. As a dev, I would try to change my employer.
@Kraaatos But also: „If you have fixed time of day, why dynamic ray-traced lighting and global illumination, if you can also use baked shadows which would dramatically increase performance?“ The devs messed it up, and they know it.
@Angelus3K The CPU will be only 10 % faster, so expect 39 fps instead of 35 fps. Later patches should have a bigger effect on the performance than the Pro.
@BrettAwesome The advantages of the PS4 Pro were quite minor, the rather basic upscaling technology Checkerboard Rendering plus more GPU cores and higher clocks for both GPU and CPU. Here we talk about an advanced technology similar to DLSS. I would be surprised if it wouldn’t also bring its own frame generation solution, which boosts from 30 fps to a (somewhat artifical looking) 60 fps. And then 30 fps on base model for many games is a given.
My issue with the Pro is that it WILL decrease the game quality on base models. Devs won’t invest in much optimisation if it runs well on Pro. I want my PS5 base model remain a machine that delivers stable 60 fps with reasonable resolutions.
@NeonPizza Here the same. RE8 and Moss Collection were both great, and I’m still waiting with RE4 (never played the remake) because I‘m afraid that there is no good supply following in the next couple of months. GT7 is great, too, but unfortunately not very „progress-driven“. Sony, where is Astrobot Remaster? Where are VR remasters for Knack 1+2 and Sackboy?
@NeonPizza It’s a product for enthusiasts. If you are heavy into gaming and having a middle-class income, 500 quids are not too much if you conpare what people spend on new iPhones.
But hardware without enough appealing software feels like a waste of money.
It’s not the price, it’s the lack of games other than arcade that holds PSVR2 back. Beside of Metro Awakening, there is nothing announced that could even only mildly interest me.
Every patient reader can easily see that only „newer“ games are included, the oldest being Uncharted 4 from 2016, while Bloodborne is from 2015.
BUT in this logic, they would have better taken Lost Legacy as the latest entry, which wouldn’t have any chance.
Horizon Zero Dawn and GoW are the only ones of these 16 games without native PS5 version, right? GoW is a contender for the win, so why not swapping HZD (which has a shiny successor) with Bloodborne?
Both Horizon games were kicked out in the first round, see the original tweet. HZD got slaughtered by GoT. And the same will probably happen with Spidey (SM1 by GoW, SM2 by GoT). Horizon and Spider-Man are popular, but fans don’t love them.
@Jay767 If so, then for a fraction of the price of Bungie. I hope that people will remember Big Jimbo as a person who effectively burned money with the takeover of Bungie, and who celebrated his retirement at London Studio, just days before he announced the studio’s closing.
@SolarSailor The rumored specs of PS5 Pro wouldn’t be good enough to make this mess of a framerate (with regular dips below 30 fps, at least in this beta) a stable 60 fps.
@get2sammyb But it all looks the same. I couldn’t tell you whether it’s an Aloy character model from HZD or from HCotM, despite being games from two different developer teams. And her personality got even more annoying over time.
@TwoDents So Sony actually teaches us: Don’t buy a AA game on our store, because you could regret it when it arrives „for free“ as a monthly PS Plus game. I find that sad for the devs and publishers of these games.
Why should I buy e.g. Robo Cop? If it comes with PS Plus, I made the right decision. If I wait and it doesn’t, then I can buy it for a much lower price. In any case, not buying these games on release is always the best decision. And Sony supports it.
If you don’t want reduce quality, reduce quantity. The Last of Us was 18 hours of gameplay, Part 2 was 30, which certainly affected production costs and time. Who would argue that Part 1 is the inferior game because of that, or that it doesn’t deserve full price?
