@Th3solution I didn‘t know, but I had the exact same feeling as all the others here. I find it just a poor level of journalism, no matter where it appeared first.
@get2sammyb Or you remove it entirely, which would be the best move from my perspective, because this rebranding doesn’t address the issue MANY here have that it is not a negative, just a characteristic. But such a bold and brave move would require to swallow the own pride.
@BolkaRover MS better should have done all that acquisitions in 2018 or 2019, to have enough exclusive games for the Series X/S. This generation is almost lost for them already.
A free PS5 60 fps patch would be great, but I think that people would also spend full price for a native PS5 version (Bloodborne Remasted) with some minor tweaks (60 fps mode and 60+ fps VRR mode, DualSense support, very quick loading). Why a Bloudborne Remake for for PS6, if they could also make a Bloodborne 2 instead? Is asking for new games really inappropriate these days?
@Suppressed A PS5 Pro will like be 1) very expensive or 2) heavily subsidized by Sony or 3) both. In the past, game margins were immense enough to justify hardware subsidies. But these days?
My prediction from what I‘ve seen in the last couple of days: Sony will skip the Pro and instead bring the PS6 much earlier, maybe 2026.
In fact, Microsoft just reiterated what they said in the past: They decide on a game-to-game basis, they remain to be a console platform holder, and Game Pass will stick to Xbox console and PC.
The message of this video was: Development costs are so high that there will be more multi-platform games, and they will stay Xbox-console- and PC-exclusive for min 1 year. That‘s not far away of what we already see and can expect from Sony!
I haven‘t played it, but from what I read and hear is: This is one of those games Sony wants to imitate with its upcoming Live Service games. But it seems to me that it is really hard to hit, the game must be authentic, and fun is not guaranteed.
I can see the discussion in Tokio: „What are the guys in California doing over there? 10m sales for SM2 is fine, but Nintendo sells 12m units of Super Mario Wonder with a feaction of development costs. Maybe the creation of SIE in California with their Hollywood attitude was a bad idea.“
Sony manager Naomi Matsuoka told investors that „Playstation 5 enters last phase of its lifecycle“, in which Sony will create a new balance between profatibility and revenue. And it would be hard to cut manufacturing costs and therefore prices, much harder than with PS4.
My interpretation: No more price cuts, successor maybe in 2026.
A reduction of the goals, just 2 months before the end of the period, by 16 % seems bad management to me. I know there would roll heads in the company I work at. Of course you can make yourself ambitious goals and miss them, but then you must reduce the goals in the moment you anticipate it. Not February, but October or November.
Sony learned from both the printer industry and Microsoft: Printers are dirt cheap, ink is super expensive. While Microsoft demonstrated how to create a quasi monopoly. I don’t want a world in which PlayStation totally dominates and games are 80+ Euro.
Sony, please! 1. Improve PS Remote Play, with lower latency (especially audio) and no frame-drops. 2. Let me set the headphones volume ingame with L1 and R1 while holding the mute button.
@Khayl: The article’s title is somewhat confusing to me. Firstly I thought that the PS5 will be distinct at some degree. But then I realised that your guideline says to add „on PS5“ on every title for Google‘s sake. You could also write „(coming to PS5)“.
Please post the top 40, as Nintendolife does (https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2024/01/uk-charts-mario-wonder-narrowly-makes-the-top-five-as-new-releases-fight-for-gold). Because I was wondering what happened to TLoUP2R. Spoiler: It went down from 3 to 11.
@Pranwell The Pro is not needed. It’s the developer who decides the target performance of a game for a specific base hardware, and for most third-party developers that’s the PS5 nowadays (and not the Xbox Series S). So if the developer says „I want it to run with 60 fps on PS5“, he or she can design it that way. And many games prove that this is possible even with great graphics, see Avatar as a more recent example. Blame the dev, not the hardware!
@dschons Digital Foundry did tests with a high-end PC running a non-Playstation software (forgot the name), with a Gigabit cable Ethernet connection. And even in this case there were dropped frames and a latency of 80 ms. So the cause for that must lie in the PS5 implementation of Remote Play, the poor Portal seems to be mostly innocent.
@Bezzator That‘s a fair point in my opinion. And still: Also artists have learned their skills from existing pieces of art. They are inspiration for both artists and AI systems. Generating non-generic pieces of art with AI requires new artistical skills, you still need some person as an artist, now with more powerful tools as ever. And, sadly, the most polygonal models and textures are not inspired pieces of art.
@ATaco Sorry, but I don’t really get this outrage. Most games have music generated by synthesizer, and there is no outrage like „Why don’t they order a small orchestra for hand-made music? They must be mean.“. This all reminds me of today‘s technologies which we love and were hated back then. Photography? Kills painters. Records? Kill musicians. Films? Kill actors. TV? Kills cinemas. Video games? Kill board games. AI? Kills artists, actors, voice actors, everyone and everything. But actually, they became separate forms of art and/or entertainment. So in the near future, AI will make things possible we don’t image right now, especially in video games. And we’ll be happy with that.
The difference between most films, series and games: The latter ones often take much longer to consume, and due to interactivity you get a stronger connection to them. So you often want to replay them at one day. And watching them standing in the shelf reminds you of the good (and less good) times you had with them. Physical games will stay alive for a very long time!
@MrGawain And this product strategy is great for their core audience. But production costs are insane, with 200m+, and only heavy hitters justify them. I get why Big Jimbo wanted the GaaS model, as a reaction on this difficult financial situation. Meanwhile, Microsoft also offers games like Pentiment and Hifi Rush, and Nintendo doesn’t know what to do with all that cash they currently earn with Super Mario Bros Wonder. Less „cinematic third-person open world action adventure“ also means „lower production costs“ and „shorter production timespan“.
I think that, besides the handheld gaming preference, the main issue are the „Western“ themes and narratives. And this makes me wonder whether this will be a successful strategy for the future of global PS gaming. We currently see a renewed division of the world in two blocks, with the „Eastern block“ an interesting market for video games. A plumber on a quest to rescue a princess is totally harmless and acceptable even for the most totalitarian regime. But a young transman breaking free of his cult in a post-apocalyptic world without working state authorities?
With the PS5 Pro probably having a hardware solution for AI upscaling and frame generation, it makes very sense to prepare the rendering engines now by upgrading them with similar, already available tech like DLSS 3 and FSR 3.
@evildave333 I don’t like turn-based by myself, but it is a totally valid gameplay mechanic. And if you consider a gameplay mechanic a sort of art (what would be the most appropriate sort of art for a video game in my opinion), then there’s no right or wrong, just more or less enjoyable or self-enlightening.

@BolkaRover No, I didn’t want to troll MS. It’s just a prime example for how to do it wrongly, and I see parallels with PSVR2.
Re: Poll: What Do You Think of PSVR2, One Year Later?
Sony gives PSVR2 so much first-party love as Microsoft gives it to Xbox. In both cases, the receipt for a slow death, beginning on day 1.
