@Insightful Nathan Fillion? The Firefly actor?? I had to google to see if there was a Nathan Fillion in a game somewhere that got "ripped off". Shooting highlighted areas has been done before though - like a thousand times before used in HZD. Escort games and missions have been around for decades so much so that it's about as "ripped off" as a zombie or racing game is. I think I've also seen people hanging upside down in history books. (seriously... hanging upside down is "ripping off"?)
(scratches head)
I was interested to see if I could learn something, but these are very generic examples just to prove a (seemingly) angry point that came out of PushSquare pointing out the super-obvious "rip-off" that Evil Inside shows itself as. But your examples are, honestly.. quite a reach, and in no way I would consider close to "ripped off". I thought you might have some real examples of direct games which are clone copies of other games. That is "ripped off". I would also draw a distinction between "ripped off" and "inspired by". As in Nathan Drake and Laura Croft are inspired by Indiana Jones.
I think it is very difficult to create a game that is 100% unique in all its elements. Some elements have been obviously copied by other games. Example is the "white" jumping and highlighted shelves and overcrops in all games now come from PS3 Uncharted - which was the first game I've seen use that to highlight the areas you need to cling to. They're in everything now.
Anyway.. I don't see "ripped off" in your examples. Just an attempt to support an angry comment (which I still don't understand why). Ripping a game off is having the same game premise, story or a series of clearly identical gameplay elements as core gameplay which another game is dependent on for its core gameplay.
So it essentially steals its title from Evil Within. It essentially steals its trailer from PT. And it essentially steals its music from oh.. any B-film, movie or TV movie. I mean its blatently obvious and would lead any watcher to get cynical about it.
Does anyone watch that trailer and think "oooh, that looks scary"?
People have made way better stuff than this in Dreams alone.
Might be interested, although Gollum looks a little too much like a cartoon monkey from the screenshots. I think they could have made him look a little more like the deformed humanoid creature he is than a grey, hairless ape.
I imagine it will be a stealth game with possible puzzle elements as Gollum cannot fight. I don't know how it really can get too exciting, but I guess we'll see.
I hope it's something more "virtual world" than Blood and Truth. The game, while high production values, did nothing to make a "virtual reality". The forward-node-movement, on-rails, "pop-up shooting gallery" gameplay was very very rudimentary and reminiscent of the old 80's arcade shooter cabinets. The story scenes were terribly slow paced as well. Boring conversations with lots of dead air made me wish I could skip them and just get on with it. So - hopefully they want to make a game where you are in an open virtual world and not stuck in a virtual movie with simple mechanics.
@NomNom I don't have expectations that PSVR2 will run back compatibility mode for PSVR1 titles.
It is a certainty that the headset will be like the rest of the wired headsets - vive, Index, RiftS or ReverbG2 among many many others which use inside-out camera tracking. The PSVR1 uses outside-in camera tracking and light-based to boot. This makes it a massive undertaking to recode games to have a completely different kind of tracking which has been programmed into it.
More than likely, you will see PS5 versions of the same games (not all of course) but if you own the PS4 version, you will get a free upgrade to the PS5 version.
My expectation is that I will have to have my PSVR1 hooked up to play those games. Not a problem for me, as I have a 500 mill Pro which will always remain hooked up beside my PS5 in the entertainment cabinet.
Well we know that London Studio has been working on their next VR project for some time. Firesprite has also been working on one of the big Action-RPGs too. Team Asobi's Astrobot2 is also a guarantee as they said they've got more astrobot news after Astro's playroom.
She's tall, muscular looking with a masculine, powerful dominating appearance to her. To each their own, but I don't find dominating masculine women interesting at all. Unless I'm passed out and dying in a fire and one can carry me out to save my life.
What a strange thing. Mind you most of the PS1 memcards out there are 1mb ... but just how much ps1 games are people playing on original consoles these days? Those CD drives were infamous for dying.
Mine just sits on a shelf as a nostalgia piece. If I want to play a PS1 disc game on my hdtv, I'd rather use my PS3.
This is a bit of a strange topic. Game cases contributing to plastic waste so Sony needs to do more?
Seriously... are there really gamers that throw their games in the garbage?
There is a gigantic market for used games.. a gamer would literally be throwing money in the garbage.
In addition - aren't they already doing a lot (and others too) by selling digital copies? Isn't zero physical components as green as you can get? (electricity notwithstanding).
Wait, it had an expansion already? I completely forgot about this game.. I have it around here somewhere. The load times were like 2 Fallout 4 load times tied together.. it was almost unplayable based on those times. If ever the extra chapters go on sale, I'll pick them up. I generally liked the game, but ... those load times.. ugh.
@RIGORR_MORTIS Settle down charlie.. don't have a heart attack.
Should say "included games" I agree. It'd be free games if, after I quit PS+, I could still play them. But I can only play them if I subscribe.. so they're included with my subscription.
@LiamCroft - It's your list, so you do what you want, but honestly, if I am playing Squadrons or Dreams in VR mode then it's a PSVR game. Omitting such high watermarks in the PSVR library simply because they also have a 2d game certainly is doing the platform an injustice through your article.
It still is a bad list though thanks to missing Saints and Sinners from your top 4, and I think the majority of the comments are in disagreement with your list here. :-
I can't believe you left Saints and Sinners off and only included it in your button poll choices! Thumbs down guys! S&S is one of the PSVRs most solid games. Up there with Astrobot, RE7, Squadrons, and Beat Saber.
Iron Man had many technical issues, some "VR developer noob" mistakes for VR veterans and was lacking in some obvious gameplay variety.
For Camoflaj - who only ever made one other game - Republique in 2013 (and a VR version of that game in 2019) - was a poor choice for a developer for such a high profile game.
I think they did the best they could with their experience level, and that's pretty impressive considering, but if Sony had've hired a seasoned developer for this, it would have been a much better game.
It DEFINITELY doesn't belong as a #1 spot when glaringly better games are missing on your list like Saints and Sinners and Star Wars Squadrons. Big fat "boo" at your list guys.. just "boo".
I bought this after seeing accolades on here. Disappointed.. It is a narrative game. At times similar to the text based Infocom adventures of the Apple II era. At times, its reminding of text based adventures like the old Lucasarts games. Where it does introduce a new element is the excessively long cutscenes where you advance them by button press for every small dialogue item. I read fast and even the "sudden" setting for text generation is ploddingly slow. Frustratingly slow. It is an interesting and odd adventure story at its core. But the elements around telling it vary from effective to frustrating. To me, it was a quirky story game (of which I appreciate), but I don't see the accolades heaped on it. As a game, it was severely lacking. As a narrative story, it was well done. I guess it depends which side of that fence you prefer. Personally... I was disappointed as I wanted a game, but I appreciated the story, so I'd give it a 6/10.
@naruball I am overly-OVERLY tired of retro-bit graphics. So much so that I have full avoidance of any such game unless it puts some kind of spin on pixel art like Fez or The Touryist.
I do have a soft spot for the early games that used this design choice in the indie scene, but now .. its tired and its old and I want to see colorful artwork in a game, not have it de-evolved to look like a 16 bit game. Pass.
Okay. I'll put a counterpoint up. I picked up KRZ after people raving about it here and seeing it as number 1 on this list. I like odd stuff, but holey schmoley this game is a snoozefest and a half. It put me to sleep during act1 last night. This morning I am in act2 and I've been rolling that effing wheel around the circular path for 30 mins trying to find the docs house. Thats it. I'm watching a wheel go around and around and around and around (etc). Someone kill me! There's 20 bux I'll never get back. I feel like I've been rickrolled. Ha ha - you guys got me - good one. ..Buy it and then get stuck wasting a day trying to advance a tortourously slow narrative story by driving a wheel in a circle. I even had a coffee to try to keep from falling asleep this morning. I've just turned the game off as I was literally nodding off - Again. ... in retrospect, I should have given 20 dollars to a hobo. At least I could have taken solace in knowing that I gave someone happiness for 20 bux as he can buy a nice whisky instead of drinking aftershave. Route Zero — say hello to Route Delete.
... Oh the only saving grace from my trip to the PSN last nite is I also picked up Donut Country - another minimalist looking game under Annapurna. And at least that one is fun.. 5 bux is a good price for that bit of silly oddness.
@shgamer RE7 was developed as a VR game and in VR it works great for tension, pacing and unease. One of the best VR experiences I've had. As a flat version tho, it didn't work all that well.
CDPR got a lot of gamer cred for Witcher3. Outside of cramming Witcher2 on an X360, it was their only console release. It was a good game, but the CP2077 world was way too ambitious for their engine and their vision. That initial trailer with a bustling city with crowds of people should have been the first warning sign. No way the base (or enhanced) consoles could keep up with that.
I wasn't interested in the Cyberpunk world anyway so I only looked at it with mild curiosity.. I thought I would pick it up when it drops to $20 a couple years from now and on the 5 when I have one.
They overstepped what they were able to do on consoles and they were always a PC game developer. And with a good gaming rig, you can run this game - if you don't though, you'll have the same problem as consoles. It's not well optimized, the graphics look dated, the engine IS dated and they've been hiding that they bit off more than they could chew.
Makes me think the refunds are the direct result of the metacritic scores and not because they're actually sorry for hiding all of this.
@Zeke68 No.. it's not saying that the Pro (or Xb1X) is fine. Did you see them say that? No. The Pro will drop to 25fps on the Digital Foundry assessment - but there's a big difference between 25fps and 15fps.. so the base consoles are what theyre hanging their heads in shame about. And they should.
@TG16_IS_BAE Why was SARS nicknamed Bird Flu? I dunno - maybe because it wasn't? Avian Flu and SARS were 2 completely different types of diseases. Avian (Bird) Flu was an Influenza type A virus. SARS was a coronavirus. You can look things up before spouting your nonsense you know.
Or you can just continue to make things up like Sony is stockpiling PS5s in top secret warehouses to limit them to only the Japanese market. The thing about conspiracy nuts is that no matter how ridiculous their conspiracy thoughts are - they all sound legit and reasonable in their broken minds.
I just don't buy Holland as Nathan Drake. I would have preferred someone who looked more like the actual Nathan Drake character that has been around since 2007.
Launch systems always have a percentage of glitches that need to be adjusted for future manufacturing. The PS4 had a percentage of HDMI port problems, but it wasn't a large amount (mine was fine). this will get sorted out too.
But unlike PS3 and PS4, there's no custom backgrounds yet? Kinda sucks that you could get a beautiful photo from this mode but you can't set it as your background.
(note that it only came to PS4 after a few firmware updates even tho it was on the PS3 already).
@carlos82 Existing path for existing users. I know its consumer friendly, but we've not seen that as generations change before. Skyrim is a good example, as are Assassins Creed games, COD games, Sports games, and others.
I don't think its fair to hard working developers to expect it because we want those studios to get paid to keep doing good work like this, although I do absolutely think its nice to be offered it.
Whats going on at 0:41? Are those two players in a synchronized dance move competition? Clearly the game needs polish.. looks impressive visually.. but needs some deffo polish.
And the more visually realistic it looks, the weirder the non realistic behaviour seems - 0:57 Curry runs up to the post for no reason and sadly turns to walk away and looks like Williamson can't remember where he put his tickets for the game at 1:07.
I don't think it was live.. I think it was Memorex.
Also, like most people replying, I don't know who Travis Scott is, but with a name like that, I would have expected he was a white country and western singer.
I'd be interested why you need to have your ps5 in camo. Do you intend to play it while hunting and don't want to spook your prey? Don't you need a camo tv then too? Doesn't your white dualsense need to be covered by a camo blanket because its not in camo? So many questions.
This game is super super easy and completely unbalanced. You have overpowered melee weapons (even the starter) and underpowered guns. After playing the awesome game that Saints and Sinners was, this title is a far step back.
This is like Arizona Sunshine only boring-er. No challenge and no scares and you can kill everything in one hit with a melee weapon. It definately needs some patches to get a lot better.
I mean.. you can't even hold a weapon in your left hand! What's that all about??

Whats going on at 0:41? Are those two players in a synchronized dance move competition? Clearly the game needs polish.. looks impressive visually.. but needs some deffo polish.
And the more visually realistic it looks, the weirder the non realistic behaviour seems - 0:57 Curry runs up to the post for no reason and sadly turns to walk away and looks like Williamson can't remember where he put his tickets for the game at 1:07.
Yup.. lots of polish.
Re: Travis Scott Presents PS5 Is the Most Extraordinary Marketing You'll See in 2020
I don't think it was live.. I think it was Memorex.
Also, like most people replying, I don't know who Travis Scott is, but with a name like that, I would have expected he was a white country and western singer.
Re: PS5 Custom Faceplates Are Already Available to Pre-Order
I'd be interested why you need to have your ps5 in camo. Do you intend to play it while hunting and don't want to spook your prey? Don't you need a camo tv then too? Doesn't your white dualsense need to be covered by a camo blanket because its not in camo?
So many questions.
Re: Monster Hunter Movie Trailer May Bemuse Franchise Fans
Milla Jovovich - she sure has a thing for capcom franchises doesn't she?
Re: Japanese Preview Image Shows an Actual PS5, Makes It Look a Lot Smaller
@hypnotoad That's not a girl.
Re: Mini Review: The Walking Dead Onslaught - One for the Undead Fans
This game is super super easy and completely unbalanced. You have overpowered melee weapons (even the starter) and underpowered guns. After playing the awesome game that Saints and Sinners was, this title is a far step back.
This is like Arizona Sunshine only boring-er. No challenge and no scares and you can kill everything in one hit with a melee weapon. It definately needs some patches to get a lot better.
I mean.. you can't even hold a weapon in your left hand! What's that all about??
Re: What Is Among Us, and Is it Coming to PS4?
Funny. never ever heard of it, but I saw a video yesterday where there's a Rec Room game of it.
