@Resurrected-X460 I've been saying that reviews scores should be broken up and treated more professionally and objectively like this for a while. The response is always that reviews scores are "just a personal opinion".
@Mezzer Yeah, I'm still amazed this keeps happening here. These people seemed interested enough to make preorder on these games, but then this one site gives it a 6/10 (a score that Pushsquare has defended as not being a bad one), a score lower than the average, and they all jump to cancel their preorders.
I genuinely don't understand what drives this mentality.
@TheCollector316 If a 10/10 is possible, then a 0/10 must also be possible. Especially for a game that doesn't play.
And how does a rating system that is based on subjective, personal opinions have an "objectively absurd" rating?. There's no standardise way of rating a game. Not in professional reviews and certainly not in user reviews. They could use a 0/10 for any game that they feel deserves it, and by virtue of the subjective personal nature of reviews, they are in the right to do so.
This is why I've been critical of all score based review systems. They are a mess.
Do you get this dismissive about the flawless 10/10 reviews as well, or is this just because the 0/10s disagree with you?.
For anyone questioning whether or not they can take 0/10 scores seriously, remember this, if a professional reviewer's review and scoring system is "just a personal opinion" then so is a 0/10 from a nobody on metacritic.
And honestly, a game being completely and truly unplayable, and the in game progression system being totally unforgiving towards a player's time and money, when it launches, seems like a good enough reason for 0/10 if you ask me.
Not a Potter fan, and under no circumstances do I want to be giving money to J.K. Rowling.
I'm OK with, say, HP Lovecraft stuff because the man is dead and buried and no longer profiting from his IP, but I can't in good conscious buy and play stuff by Rowling or Cawthorne because I know they get some of that money and how they've used that money.
@NEStalgia To be totally fair to the Nintendo fanbase, you don't have time to want a better online service, app, online system communications, or any of that nonsense when you are so busy playing so many great games asking for folders.
'We need to be attracted to the main character' is a bad take.
"We see ugly people every day, we want our entertainment to have attractive people unless it serves the story for them to be somehow unattractive" - whatever this is, is the worst take.
The correct answer is that it's OK to enjoy beauty in all its forms, but to get caught up in it and complain about how an artist chose to design their character is superficial and immature.
@Boucho11 The overall point isn't that they are impossible to find, but that normalising paying over RRP for what amounts to second hand, meaning you are paying more money for less protections on that massively expensive item you just bought, makes zero sense from a consumer standpoint.
When people are making a hobby out of keeping on eye on products being sold over open market places, just to get a "good" deal of £70 over RRP, no warranty, and they are praising it, something has gone very wrong.
@Jacko11 "everyday new ones go up. I check last night to confirm what I was writing here."
Oh, so I just have to be constantly checking ebay in order to have the privilage of paying an extra £70 to a scalper?. Dude, your logic is infallible.
Don't you find it a bit funny that apparently only you can find these "better" deals? I'm just adding to the evidence that you were talking BS. If I had found one for the price you claimed I would have backed you up.
@Jacko11 I just checked eBay and, I did in fact find one for £520. It wants me to collect in person and bring cash....
The cheapest to be delivered is £550.
I think you are the one failing to do the ebaying properly, you literally have several people telling you "no", and there's only you saying you can get one for £520.
Not that that matters when buying for anything more than £450 and second hand is just dumb as rocks.
"I wouldn’t feel as “right” playing as a female character in a co-op game"
Maybe this is just a me thing then, but I've had no problem playing as someone who wasn't a white male. I mean, if it's a game that allows customisation, I will make them like me, but in games that have premade characters, I will happily role play that character.
As an example, my earliest example I can remember of this would be Hunter the Reckoning. I read the bios for the four characters and I chose the black female, because her deal was she was the defender and I related more to that than the old priest or burly biker. And that would be a consistent for years, including picking Roland in Borderlands (my favourite character) or Louis in Left 4 Dead.
And I just want to clarify that I'm all for diversity and representation. I just don't believe a game is lesser for not including options that allow you to change that. I think that if a studio has a compelling white male hero (or in this case, a hetero couple), that's just as good, or even better than, trying to shoehorn in a "diverse" character and thinking that fixes any narrative problems with your game (as we highlighted with Aloy).
@slips666 But then the option to have a white savior would still be there, would it not?
Surely in that instance you'd actually argue that not having an option, and having characters and themes that didn't invoke white savior complex, would be beneficial to the game and its narrative?
But in the case of Haven, the theme is freedom to love who you love. It's a theme that can be conveyed just fine with straight or gay couples. The options are nice, but not needed in order to tell that story.
This is why I stated "not needed but glad". Because viewing content purely through the lense of the identity of the protagonist does a disservice to the story telling process.
I'm confused how Destiny 2's the Witch Queen with its $40 DLC and no plat (8 bronze, 2 silver) is good , but AC Valhalla's Dawn of Ragnarok with its $40 DLC and no plat (5 bronze 4 silver) is bad.
Especially when Valhalla doesn't lock out old paid content to deliver the new stuff.
Why do gamers hate one product when it even slightly competes with the product that they like?
Simple. This is for the same reason gamers hate minorities, and women in games. They are insecure and fragile. And any slight challenge is a massive challenge to their being and sense of self.
I'll normally take user reviews over critics. And if the two align then even better. I mean, HFW has 88% critic, 80% user. Uncharted, the movie about the movie game, has 47% critic and 66% user, and I see the users being about right.
@z0d15g0d The problem is when said dudes get upset that not every women is some arbitrary set standard of beauty.
And part of the reason these guys can't get a date their entire lives is because of these weird expectations they have. It's off putting to real women.
@Quadalog You want me to believe that the guys at Guerilla went 5 years without any pay?
Overworking, like 55 hours a week can actually kill people. People aren't weak for not being able to handle it. Maybe you are just lazy when you're "working".
@AdamNovice And most dudes that have these high standards are always bottom tier themselves and have never dated at all, let alone close to the unrealistic standard they have.
@Apfelschteiner I'm listening, but what you said talks as though crunch is normally just a couple months. But that doesn't address that what is normal crunch is months to years of overworking for zero extra pay. It also doesn't address that any amount of 80 hours a week is going to reduce productivity a lot. The piont of crunch at this point isn't to create a diamond. It's to force through as much work as possible at the cost of the human doing it.
If what you want to say is that crunch as a concept could be viable if it was balanced then saying "as I understand it, crunch isn't so bad" isn't me not listening, that's you failing to communicate what you mean.
"In February of 2011, fresh off nine months of 80-hour work weeks, Jessica Chavez took a pair of scissors to her hair. She’d been working so hard on a video game—14 hours a day, six days a week—that she hadn’t even had a spare hour to go to the barber."
