Ronin did a lot better than I expected (40-55k) and I expected 80k+ for DD2 so a disappointment over there. Peach is unsurprising since the only games in Japan that actually sell well anymore are first party Nintendo games (hence, why so many Japanese devs have increased their focus/presence in the West). Also very rare to see Mature games sell well in Japan.
@tameshiyaku But if a Big console manufacturer is helping you by providing extra development money and a team to do all the ancillary stuff (Xdev did all the localisation etc), while also supporting you in marketing at the cost of a little exclusivity period Why would a studio making their first Console game that too a AAA not jump at such an offer while also building a relationship with such a big player?
@tameshiyaku I disagree. Exclusives show their respective consoles at their best levels. Games like Mario Odyssey, botw, SM2 and God of War are so good because they are built exclusivity in mind. They push the console while utilising unique features, they run well, they look great and carry a level of polish that even the best third-parties cannot produce.
I feel the subheading is weirdly harsh since I think 2024 has been a banger for exclusives. 1) HD2 2) FF7 Rebirth 3) Pacific Drive 4) Granblue 5) Ronin (despite this sites harsh criticism has been pretty liked by players here)
and now Stellar Blade which is shaping up to be great.
7/10. A fun combat system that is a little too easy imo and lovely presentation is held back by piss poor characters and a terribly bland plot. A pretty big step backwards when compared to 13 Sentinels or Dragon Crown.
DD2 is definitely going to be a disappointment for Capcom with the VERY heavy marketing. Estimating 150-200 mil development cost.
ROTR will be slightly disappointing since it is aimed towards Asian Audiences and was more likely cheaper to make and it wasn't very heavily marketed overall outside of Japan and a few Asian cities. 100-120 cost imo.
Also, regarding Peach? It is rubbish. Peach deserved much better than a this. How it has scored above 70 is insane to me since any other game dev would've been lucky to get a Meta score of 65.
So I know people have short memories but I remember when devs and fans hated the concept of the PS4 Pro. It came out and was well liked by those who owned it. It never replaced the Base PS4 but its sales still beat expectations.
People questioned the purpose of the PS Portal yet here it is still beating expectations in fact beating the EDGE controller in Dollar sales last month in USA.
These are meant to cater to those who really care about getting the best performance in their games and if you played Alan Wake 2 or now DD2 or Jedi Survivor or FFXVI or FFVII Rebirth (with its PS2 textures as per some in the comments on this site have said) you'd understand that we are already hitting performance limits.
The only hardware that has truly suffered this gen is VR2 and I generally think VR as a whole is in a rut. For every HL Alyx or Asgard's Wrath or RE or Astrobot there are 10 nonsense games.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner There is a lot of competition. Steam, PS and Switch are all competitors. Not to mention they are fighting blackhole games like GTA V, Roblox and Fortnite in software. Then in the macro scale they're fighting youtube, tiktok and Netflix in the fight to have the most consumption.
Sale for me. One chance at a good impression and they dropped the ball. Most of these features should've been there at launch and when announced, gamers everywhere told them things like variable framerate was dumb and they remained over-confident. How Motion Blur toggles still are not there in Japanese games at launch is crazy.
Quite a lot of voters waiting for a sale for this one. Not surprised I'm in the same boat with the performance issues being especially poor It is easy to see why.
Question is when will I get the time to play it. Rebirth and BG3 have my attention and I'm barely half way through the first and just in the third act of the other. Stellar Blade and now FFXVI DLC next month, Paper Mario in May and Elden Ring in June.
@Th3solution I played AW2 and now FF7 Rebirth in quality mode and it affected me a lot less than I thought it would. If the 60 fps mode has major downgrades then I know I'll have an easier time with 30fps and get used to it in a few hours.
I think Spider-Man 2 was the last PS game I played in 60fps because it really made swinging and gliding more fun.
Capcom doesn't need to do anything. People keep eating their ***** up. Remember how terrible MHW ran? It fluctuated so much it was outright painful to play.
Rebirth. Costa Del Sol really did a good job of killing the vibe and forward momentum. Ugly swimsuits, stupid side quests, terrible compulsory mini games book ended by a great bit of story and a good boss fight. Also Hojo scares me.
@LifeGirl Don't forget everyone's favorite studio RGG ended Work from Home too and said it is the reason the new game was well received and came out on time. It was ignored at the time since critics/journalists were too busy talking about the death of the Western gaming world.
Waiting for a sale. DMC5 did this too for orbs. Grind like a ***** or pay money to get ***** easier. Either way Rebirth and BG3 don't seem like they'll end anytime soon so no FOMO for me.
@Gediminas tbf this site has always been pretty uninterested in this game to the point of not covering the marketing unlike how they do it for every single thing DD2s marketing shows. I've gotten more information about this game from the neutral Eurogamer and not this Playstation-centric joke of a site.
@MomsSpaghetti Reminds me of Steam nerds being upset that Alan Wake 2 which exists only because of EPIC was exclusive to EPIC.
These games exist because of the investment. Nioh exists because Playstation supported them. Also, I think these second party exclusive deals are a good way to bolster the PS Catalogue like the old PS1&PS2 days.
How is it that every dystopian sci-fi game still uses the bloody Blade Runner/Logan Run Aesthetic. I feel like the last truly unique looking dystopian worlds we got were Mirror's Edge and Horizon
Loved Clive and Joshua's tale and the first and third act but every attempt to tackle the subject of slavery was absolutely terrible and Kupka was a terrible act 2 villain. The more serious the FF the worst the overall politics for some reason. Solid 8/10 overall. Nowhere near the top 3 FFs a very good FF game nonetheless.
@rachetmarvel Not really as big as you would think. Good for the big AAA (Persona mostly as LAD fell fast within 10 days) ones but not so much for niche ones. The Switch and Playstation are still the big ones for that.
@TwoDents PC Gamers are just really weird I mean they took a joke phrase "PC Master Race" and actually made it their personality. I think gaming in general has never been more console friendly in fact. Playing online games without cheaters, CRPGs now coming optimised for consoles, real time strategy games and 4x games as well, the knowledge that the game can run on your device at medium-high graphics. Most popular indies are also finding their way to consoles a year or so later.
HD2 is a perfect example of right place, right time, right marketing and right price. Empty period for games, near a huge flop like SS and coming just as Palworld fascination was waning, not high value marketing to give people the overinflated expectations, cheap to reflect the AA nature.
This popularity has had issues though as they're already having trouble with the hardcore reddit community. I would say they should hire more PR/community teams to deal with online interactions and reduce dev interactions now that they've gone legit big.
For the game itself it looks really fun and is maybe the first time since TitanFall 2 that an MP game has me intrigued. That being said what big single player or MP games has the PC had to actually compete? mainstream turnbased JRPGs (one million sales is still nothing much in the broader multi platform market), early access controversy based games (Palworld) and Suicide Squad (a bad AAA game that wasted an amazing developer). Not a very strong competition pool.
Fascinating to see how much money live services make in the Western world. On Playstation HK and Japan it isn't even on the first page of the pre-order section. Wonder if the rise of f2p gacha has made a huge difference or if it's a lack of marketing. Maybe pirate fantasies aren't big here.
I'm 8-9 hours in. Just completed most of the open world stuff in the first area. There is a bit too much focus on open world nonsense without the puzzle aspects from games like Horizon to make it interesting. I do not like how often Chadley speaks.
Not much to say about combat as Remake was already great in that area. Enemies are a lot tougher this time though.
But at the same time it reminds of GOWR, BG3 in the best way where it feels like a hangout game with characters you genuinely care for. Not too fond of how often the women do that stupid bending towards the camera to look kawaii nonsense though.
So early impressions are 8.5/10. Maybe when the story kicks in it will go higher if the open world stuff grates it will go lower.
@get2sammyb Respectful? Have you seen how toxic the comments on this site have started get lol? When I come tomorrow I expect 15% of the comments to be removed.
That being said it is fun to see some silly looking costumes which remind me of the ps3 era with lollypop chainsaw and stuff.
While there is some sense to what he said it is again ignoring the obvious elephant in the room that we are in an unprecedented economic crisis overall. Tech and gaming especially over invested in covid due to skewed data from the lockdown. what we are seeing now is an obvious course correction.
Another huge thing is it is giving power back to the publishers and studios when during the pandemic every company hired at extremely high salaries due to the competition in hiring market (it was a pro-employee market).
Most of those fired will be rehired again for a much lower salary.
@ChrisDeku Incorrect the peak is work hours for Asia because right now in HK where I live it 9pm and the player count is 144k on steam. when Asia is asleep and america is awake the player count shoots up.
I also think there is far less competition early this year with all the other online games being horrible (Spidey 2 is a single player game that went up against Mario, Alan Wake, BG3, AC in a similar launch period). The JRPGs which have dominated the release schedule this year so far despite recent growth are nowhere near mainstream yet so games like Yakuza, P3R are still minnows in the mainstream.
Everything aligned for Palworld and Helldivers 2 to make a splash.
Funny these are the same four tweets EG had on their article hours before. Lazy work guys (could've at least searched for 3-4 more tweets).
Also, for a Playstation website it is weird y'all haven't covered the new Ronin trailer yet but I guess talking about a FO tv show is more important. Odd that the reddit community argument between a dev and reddit for HD2 hasn't been covered either
The government has strongly urged all companies to raise salaries and analysts are saying this year will be see the biggest raises in general to help combat the very bad inflation.
