I'll bet a lot of people though "yikes, this is looking rough." While developing or supervising the game but for fear of being labeled bigots or whatever they had to keep their mouth shut. Now they're losing their jobs anyway.
Nintendo wants a monopoly on these Pokemon style games. Why allow healthy competition if you can just sue the opposition? That way you can continue to release low effort games and make millions.
The big thing is that this is supposed to be a remaster, not a remake. A remaster should have minimal changes (whether they personally offend you or not) From lines of dialogue being changed (one guy calling Frank a commie) to the VAs being swapped out. Even rewriting Frank to be less of a sleazeball, despite that being how his character was meant to be. He wasn't an action hero, he was a scumbag put in a crappy situation that eventually decides to do the right thing for once.
Everyone seems to be focusing on the photography thing as the one big thing (which is how this always works. Everyone always targets the one thing that best lines up with their preconceived notions) but in reality the photography is just one slice of a big cake of changes. Does it REALLY matter in the end? I don't even consider it "censorship", it's just a pointless change that only a few people would have cared about if it was still in. Same as how only a few people really care that it was taken out.
About what I expected, when I first started the answer I was excited for more of the game I had fallen in love with, unfortunately I didn't quite get that with the expansion.
I watched a rather comprehensive video of all the changes from someone who was clearly passionate about the original release and it seems that all these little changes and edits do add up. The casual fan who just wants to mindlessly murder zombies in a mall won't notice but for those with love for the original release, just play that one on PC and install some mods to update the experience (it'll be cheaper too!!)
I don't have an infinite budget or endless time to hope that a game I play will be worth said money/time. Highly reviewed games are usually a safe bet, though I don't mind gambling every now and then if the game is from a developer I enjoy or a genre I like. Ultimately though if you want good review, just make an objectively good game.
Saw it for $5 at a theater like a week after it released. There were like 6 other people there and nobody laughed at any point. Honestly I just decided to watch it because it was really hot that day and was hungry for some popcorn.
Honestly the pro just doesn't seem like that much of an improvement over the base console. It's not like we're talking buying a series X over an S. It's just... slightly better and that's it. It's kind of a shame since I've been considering trading in my original PS5 for an upgrade but not if it will hardly be an upgrade.
We're due for another game industry crash. Hopefully it gets all the investors to bail so we can go back to publishers making smaller but more enjoyable games that don't cost millions or billions to create.
You mean that different players like different experiences and catering to as many different people as possible with many games so they buy your stuff is the key to success? Someone give that guy a raise! And close another studio to save a buck!
2 new titles being added every week seems rather compelling. I can see the library growing to a respectable number in a year, if the platform is still available. There is something to be said about how easy it is to just pick up and stream without having to fuss with roms and emulators. Unfortunately they really should have launched with a free trial, to ensure you can even play these games well.
@themightyant
Absolutely, I almost quit playing one of my favorite game franchises (Persona) because I was more worried about collecting shiny fake things and I got so upset that I missed an event that would force me to replay the entire game just to go back and get it. Missing that trophy was so frustrating and all I could think about when I started the game, to the point I would barely get any progress done. Eventually I set the game aside and just played something else for a while..but in that time I thought to myself "WHY am I doing this? Do I EVER have fun getting these trophies?" At most I'll get an endorphin rush that lasts for like 20 minutes when the plat pops and maybe a simple "congrats!" When I tell friends...but was it worth the hours of frustration getting some of these trophies usually brings?
I decided then that the answer was no and went back to play Persona 5 again, solely focusing on completing the game and ignoring any of the remaining trophies. Ever since I just play something until it stops being fun, I don't even bother to complete games if I'm not enjoying them. Gaming first and foremost should be fun! I don't know how I forgot that a long the way. Reading this article about the trophy grind for Concord makes me happy that I left that part of myself behind.
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare They'd murder the remaining goodwill they have if they hike the price up yet again. No way Sony is that dumb and if they are...well then I'll finally abandon consoles and go PC.
@BloodyBlact Hey it could be a HiFi rush situation, where they are saved from closure by another studio. Nobody wants to see people that are able to make good games get fired.
Ubisoft have gotten lazy. They think they can slap the Far Cry formula on everything and it'll just work. The lack of attention to detail really shows from different gameplay clips I've seen. Little things like the characters not getting wet after going in water, the NPC animations very lacking...this is what happens when you pump out open world after open world.
Just gotta cut your loses. I'm not sure how well it'll do going free to play (and it'll probably piss off the few actual fans the game has if they turn around and suddenly hand it out for free. I feel like both Concord and Sony were too stupid to correct ship and have now got to take their lumps for it.
@SMcCrae95 If this is the case I can see it actually being a positive rather than what I was worried about. The only civ game I didn't enjoy was beyond Earth but even that one had some good ideas, so I'll give Firaxis the benefit of the doubt with this one.
@anubisvel While true, while playing Humankind I ran into the issue of the game quickly becoming a race to advances ages and pick the civ you wanted before another player was able to take them and lock them out. I just feel like this "changing civs" idea was already implemented in Humankind (which is a very Civ style game already) so my hope is that this doesn't just become a repeat of that game, which I wound up not enjoying as much as traditional Civ.
I'm really loving the change in art style but I'm very worried about the game lacking a bit of identity with rulers being able to lead other civs. It's how I felt about humankind, which this new system sounds similar to. I really hope Civ fleshes this out a lot better than that game did.

Does not bode well for the next Assassin's Creed.
