I am going to be honest- I love it. The world is gorgeous and unique. While the story isn't anything revolutionary it is keeping me engaged and most of all I am addicted to the gameplay loop. I see myself playing this for a long time. No issues with the pay to play mechanics. I've already dropped $150 for unlocking some season pass levels and descendants I want right away.
I am completely addicted and having a blast. Love playing as Jayber with my turrets. Game is gorgeous with VRR/120Hz on balanced mode with Ray Tracing. Love the lore and world. Definitely will be my obsession for awhile.
I think it should be mentioned this game is 100% playable solo and feels just like a proper Outlast spin off played alone. In my opinion it's much scarier too.
I beat Elden Ring twice (it was my first souls game) and although it was difficult, I still enjoyed it because the environmental storytelling, lore and world brought it all together.
Enter Shadow of the Erdtree. Beyond being brutally difficult to the point of unfair, it's just not an enjoyable experience because I feel there is a major lack of motivation. We are dropped into the Realm of Shadow. No context. There is almost no environmental storytelling, the lore is almost nonexistent. You wander from one dungeon to the next with no real reason why. It just feels like a shadow (no pun intended) of the base game. I've explored all over and feel no sense of wonder, awe. Nothing.
First off, the forums for FFXIV are filled with the worst of the worst. Second, this isn't going to be widespread but if it makes the few healers who will strike feel important - ok. Third, duty queues won't be an issue because since Shadowbringers, all MSQ dungeons can be done with an NPC party. So, I don't need a healer. Done.
@BrotherFriede From rumors and leaks this isn't a full blown remake like FF7, but more like a remake/remaster like Crisis Core. A major glam up, but retaining the structure and battle system, etc.
I always enjoyed RE0 but felt the train was severely underutilized. This is a horror game, and Umbrella has always been quite fantastical. The train could easily be expanded to include way more diversity in car types and locations, to keep you on the train longer.
I hope developers considering acquisition with Microsoft are watching closely. My hope and prayer that Atlus, Capcom and Square Enix continue to operate independently in the third-party space.
I enjoyed the ending and think it really did something better with enhancing Cloud's unreliable mind and psychosis. Folks want to make up all these insane timeline issues when I really don't see it as all that complicated, and that it is alluding to variations of worlds can live in the lifestream, but doesn't mean they are actual timelines.
One thing I realized upon second viewing, which was brilliant is the fake-out of Cloud saving Aerith, he didn't actually save her at all and she isn't actually alive in another timeline. It was Cloud's broken mind making the entire thing up. Even Aerith's hands moving up to Cloud's cheek, she didn't do that. Cloud is so far gone mentally he is the one holding Aerith's hand to his face and he's actually talking to a corpse.
Anyway, I cried. I found it to be a fitting ending and not as confusing as many want to make it. End of the day, Cloud is now completely insane and has no idea what's real or not, and Tifa/Barrett realize he is now completely off.
I truly don't see how games can be made in this environment when large swaths of staff are removed. Doesn't this just prolong the development time? Are we looking at games now taking even longer to release?
I am more excited to do a NG+ with Leviathan from the start. Thinking about the new Eikon combinations I can make. Loved Echoes of the Fallen, but loving we get a new Eikon to play with thanks to Rising Tide.
I am hoping Graphics Mode gets some love too. Compared to Remake on PS5 it's much softer visually, lacking sharpness in the menus/overall HUD and graphically to the point of distraction on my OLED. Performance Mode was unplayable with how blurry it was, looking like someone smeared vaseline all over the screen. And that's just resolution issues. The game has terrible low-quality textures in the environments, some straight up don't load, and the pop-in is worse than Remake's ever was...very distracting too in the background of cutscenes as assets load in.
@AlexPorto Textures are 100 times worse than remake. I've never seen so many mismatched textures in the environments that are straight up blurry or not loading at all and where you can see the seams of the environments stitched together. And the texture pop-in is so much more noticeable.
@Konks I was so disappointed in Graphics Mode. It looks very soft and lacks clarity. Even the HUD isn’t displaying in 4K. They keep using the graphics in marketing and it makes zero sense the game is utilizing only 1/4 the resolution. I hope they can fix it
The game is horribly optimized visually. Playing on OLED and Graphics Mode looks “soft” and even the text/HUD seems lower resolution (John from DF confirmed the game doesn’t have a 4K UI). Performance Mode is super blurry. Apparently the game is post processing at 1/4 the resolution. I’m still excited for the game but hope there is a Day 1 patch. I went back to Remake on PS5 and the clarity is night and day with Remake looking better than Rebirth. I know some sacrifices had to be made for larger environments but come on.
My only wish is they could fix the texture load-in lag. I used to only experience it in Act 3, but now it happens in Act 1 and 2. It is a minor quibble but annoying when there is a 3-4 second delay in clothing and facial features to load in.
@Lup It was originally developed as Valhalla DLC until being expanded into a full game. The next big AC game is going to be a massive open world RPG like Origins/Odyssey/Valhalla but I wouldn't mind these smaller, back to the basics games inbetween that.
@AaronBayne From what I've seen and other reviews they say the PS5 version is very soft and almost blurry. Did you find the visuals to be the same way? I can't stand when a game looks soft/low rez and not sharp and won't be able to handle it if it is.
I think the big issue is it grew too big. Druckmann said multiple times the game would have the same level of cinematic storytelling their single-player games have. I think in terms of monetizing something like that, it moved further away from Factions and into something like The Division.
@QuietintheCorner I think the big issue is Factions 2 grew into something else. Druckmann has said multiple times it was a full AAA title with a story on par with their single player titles. I think it just got way too big.
From what I can gather, ND tried to treat Factions 2 like a single player game that was online. Druckmann said the story would be on par with TLOU Part 1 and 2 in an interview a couple years ago and that it had grown into a full-blown AAA experience. I think Sony realized it wasn't going to be able to monetize it long-term. I wouldn't be shocked if the online game is being folded into TLOU3, keeping the story and weaving in Ellie. Not sure why ND couldn't have just made a simple Faction 2.
Dreadwolf seems to be in a state of development hell. The game was rebooted three times since 2017, and now still seems to be struggling to get completed. We haven't seen anything substantial from the game at all. It makes me think they are rebooting it yet again if you read between the lines.
They need to stop making console-exclusive deals then. There really is no real good reason FFXVI shouldn't have released on Xbox. Same with FF7R and Rebirth. I am a die-hard FF fan and Playstation fan but even I see that this is just dumb, especially with such high expectations.
Something is definitely going on with Microsoft though and I wouldn't be surprised after that FF14 announcement if SE does multiplatform releases from now on.
