Re: Rumour: Concord Cost $400 Million, Sony Believed It Was the 'Future of PlayStation'

reek

Anybody who closely read what happened to Factions because of Bungie's extreme influence on Sony and the later treatment of Naughty Dog's employees won't be surprised by this.

They cancelled the main mp game from their star studio because bungie didn't think 'it was going to stick around long term'. Despite many, many devs loudly proclaiming that it was the single most fun game they've ever played. Anybody who's played the combat of TLOU 2 can tell how phenomenal it is and how more incredible it can be with more work and an mp focus.

After the cancellation, there were reports of 'heads rolling' and on twitter, many ex-devs complained that they were treated piss poor by Sony's management and kicked out abrubtly. You think Naughty Dog almost made an MP game, suddenly realized it was a long term support commitment, cancelled and start kicking out/ letting their devs gets humiliated? No it was all Sony's doing because they considered Bungie the experts.

Concord, for those who don't know, is made by Bungie ex devs. The Company that funded this game, hello monsters, was led by a Bungie dude. The live service pivot was all bungie, supported by Herman, until a few months ago.

I'm SO GLAD this happened. That game had the single highest potential but I don't know if it'll ever be brought back. Unless Hulst somehow convinces that he has something to do with helldivers 2 success (he doesn't), he's getting fired soon.

And just to be clear, Helldivers 2 is based on existing playstation gameplay. Spiderman MP, Factions,Twisted Metal were all MP live service that would have been huge hits. All these Bungie generic games are going to go nowhere and hopefully, Sony course corrects now that the obvious results are here and more are incoming. After fairgames and marathon flop and Hulst gets fired and this all ends with a sad whimper.

Re: The Novelty of PlayStation's PC Ports Does Appear to Be Dampening

'We suppose one issue here is the platform holder’s insistence of demanding a PSN login, which is restricting its more recent games from being sold in hundreds of countries. While we understand its decision to mandate a login, it really needs to ensure PSN is readily available in more regions, because it’s needlessly preventing people from purchasing its games as a result'

This is false. The ususal schtick has always been to login through the closest country Sony's server. So if you're in srilanka, use india's server to make PSN account. This region block and 'have to be in that country physically' is entirely imposed upon by Sony and the main reason for the decline of their subsequent games.

Re: Astro Bot (PS5) - One of the Greatest PlayStation Platformers of All Time

reek

Hijacking this comment section just to add. Astro bot Rescue Mission (VR ONE) is still the MOST transformative game I've played in my adult life. If you've become jaded or gaming bores you, it'll legit make you feel like a kid playing games for the first time again. That feeling that desentized adults have to take drugs to feel, I kid you not. No word in the english dictionary can describe THAT feeling.

I'm sure this'll be amazing, creative and win GOTY (it's a lock at this point I think). But VR transforms the experience and Astro elevates it.

Re: Concord (PS5) - Live Service Debut Beats the Hate with Stellar Presentation and Good Gameplay

reek

@13th-UwU

All of this just makes me sad for Factions 2. Given how phenomenal Last of us 2's combat was, and how many devs came out saying Factions 2 was the most fun game they'd ever played, the cancellation (because of Bungie of all people) was soul-crushing.

Uncharted 2 made the Sony exclusive template when Sony most needed it and this how they treated their top studio, by cancelling their first online mega-project and firing so many of their devs.

And people often say 'single player devs' can't make a hit live service when they absolutely can if they're not being pressured to do it. I consider Rockstar to be the greatest developer in the world (and Naughty Dog second) and Gta is still the biggest 'premium/entry cost' live service title I can think of.

Re: Black Myth: Wukong Is Blowing Up Big Time on PS5, PC

reek

Can somebody please tell Sony to STOP banning games for sale in 170 countries on steam. This ban includes CHINA which is by far the biggest market of steam today.

They will not have another Helldivers 2 situation if they keep this up.

Re: Dragon Age: The Veilguard Won't Let You Control Companion Characters

reek

Is this a genuine 'Bioware being bold' or is this because EA executives thought they'd streamline the game to attract a bigger market?

People don't know the incredible company that was lost when EA bought them. Like why buy a studio that goes for critical acclaim instead of yearly sports title company if you're going to turn the former into the latter only to see it fail?

Re: Preview: Ignore The Haters, Concord Is a Good PS5 Shooter We Can't Wait to Play More Of

reek

I don't understand why these live service mid-priced mp games are not day-and-date with ps plus extra?

First, you already need the normal ps plus to play them, pc port is day-and-date to target max audience, they live and die when the player populations gets too low.

Besides the target for these games is to earn from microtransactions more than base price (which is why they're priced much lower).

Obviously single-player premium is different but it seems they're painting all of their rules with the same brush.

Re: Sony Is Allegedly Pulling PSVR2 Funding, Report Claims

reek

I remember one user saying the obvious when this peripheral was released without backwards compatibility and more expensive than the console 'that it was the next ps vita'. And i remember everybody going off at him even though it was obvious.

That's the trouble with random comments on website, particularly fanboyish ones, the comments are highly biased and unrealistic. The corporate world is brutal and this device was always going to fail. And you have to be ultra blunt to make a realistic prediction. But that's never the popular opinion on these sites.

Re: Hidetaka Miyazaki 'Knows for a Fact' FromSoftware Devs Want a Bloodborne PC Port

reek

Sony is the company that banned 180 countries from buying their games on steam, china, the one with the highest players included as well. I was fully expecting ghosts of tsushima to absolutely blow up if it wasn't for that restriction.

Sony is basically a better version of nintendo, i'm not at all surprised by the financial decisions they make.

Re: Dragon Age: The Veilguard Shifts to 'Real-Time Action Combat'

reek

As a DAO fan, that's a good thing. Origins combat was terrible and most of its fans would agree. Does anyody think bioware is suddenly going to make a tactical combat system rivaling Baldur's gate 3?
No and this game should play to its strengths. Inquisition's combat was half-assed real time and thus criticized, they needed to go full real time back then.
I just hope the game's dialogue and characters are NOT streamlined and is as amazing as origins. There's this tradition of faster combat= less complex dialogue such as in Mass effect but I hope here its more faster combat AND complex dialogue.

Re: Sony Sets Sights on Ruling the Anime World

reek

@ShadowofSparta

Yeah imagine them removing their streaming website in many countries because of some nonsense account stuff. Never in steam has a publisher made such a boneheaded decision to limit sales of its own products. This is a company that makes excellent products and yet hampers them with the most boneheaded financial decisions.

For example, any sane person could see PSVR2 would be a flop, PS3 was going to start off terribly, same for PS Vita. And worst, they're all excellent products. There are countless examples of such awful financial decisions not even counting the current steam debacle.

They could literally bottleneck anime from expanding all over the world in the same way someday. And im amazed that regulators didn't stop the mixup of crunchyroll and funimation, given that mainstream websites like netflix, disney plus only have it as a side, not the main attraction. Now they're basically holding the keys of the anime industry's accessibility in much of the world.

Re: Here's Your First Official Look at HBO's The Last of Us Season 2

reek

Do keep in mind they're splitting part 2 into 2 seasons. And given the acclaim of the third episode, I think we'll see more original stuff and less rushing.

Also prediction, I also think last of us will reach the popularity of stranger things by the time game 2 is fully adapted. And probably become the biggest show of this decade along with squid game.

And also Factions would have likely been Sony's biggest hit of all time had it released given how talented naughty dog is in the gameplay department.

Re: God of War Ragnarok Set for PC, New Report Claims

reek

Anybody notice how Protective Sony is with Last of Us 2? The game isn't even on PS Plus after all these years! They went ahead and made a whole ass unecessary remake just for the first game before releasing it.
I'm assuming it'll come around the second season of the tv show though.

Re: Helldivers 2 PC Players Blindsided by Seemingly Sudden PSN Account Requirement

reek

I feel bad for Arrowhead. A 100-person team works a decade to create as much of a fun game as they could, it blows up and is on its way to become one of the biggest Sony published game of all time, and then big publisher suddenly makes a requirement that gets their game review bombed, something Arrowhead has zero control over.

For those who don't know, pc players DONOT like control of big companies. They review bomb if anybody forces a second account, tries to control mods, tries to charge for something new, pretty much anything that doesn't relate to a developer trying to improve the game via feedback. Hence why steam is so 'open', why other launchers always fail, why multiplayer doesn't cost, why games are generally cheaper, why 'passion projects' are so common in the pc space and a million other examples.

Sony is used to their exisiting fanbase mostly swallowing minor inconveniences, this does not fly in the pc space.

Re: Alan Wake 2 Yet to Recoup Dev, Marketing Expenses as Tencent Raises Stake

reek

Remedy is such a talented developer. I think if they go more towards what sells in the market with the same passion, such as their upcoming control live-service multiplayer game, (I know core gamers don't like to hear this but its true) their efforts will be much more properly recognized provided the remedy quality holds.

As for digital, it's obvious they're trying to get more long term sales with the lack of a second hand option since control had limited sales at the start but a very long term tail. And ofcourse, lack of steam kills the pc market, though it's understandable given epic is the publisher. Just hope they put the live service game on steam next time.

Re: $130 Version of Star Wars Outlaws Under Fire as Ubisoft Prices Increase

reek

Hot take: I wish publishers would get together and just increase the base price to a 100 dollars instead of these editions.

Sorry but console market hasn't grown and the budgets/worlds keep increasing. If the base price doesn't increase, these editions will keep increasing.

i blame ps4 generation where base prices didn't increase. 20 dollars back then and now and base price would/should have been 100 right now.

Would it completely remove 'editions'? No, but the base price needs to constantly keep increasing otherwise base content will be cut in order to put it in other editions.

Re: Rumour: Xbox Console Exclusive Starfield Is Setting a Course for PS5

reek

@Bingoboyop
It is ironic that promising their exclusives to PS5 would have helped them during the FTC hearings and probably reduced the backlash they're going to get from their loyal fans. However, I'm 99 percent sure that the decision was taken recently.

Have you looked at the xbox console sales in 2023. They dropped to about 7 million (from 10-11) while playstation is on another league (20-25). And this happened while the Series X was on its biggest sale cut yet, and when microsoft gobbled up activision.

So likely the shareholders asked questions when the numbers came in, and Microsoft heads panicked and announced these drastic actions.

One must keep in mind that America is much more capitalist than Sony and Nintendo's Japan. The numbers need to be always be going up, and if not, drastic actions are taken. Ideals, visions, beliefs, long term strategies all come second.

People like gaming's Kojima that may have a dedicated audience but don't do well in the mainstream are likely to be a thing in Japan, not America. And why the biggest Anime's tend to be targeted to a certain demographic but Hollywood blockbuster's tend to be four quadrant, targeted to all.

@Troubbble I think that was supposed to be a cloud only game.

Re: Until Dawn Reportedly Set to Receive New PS5, PC Versions

reek

This is the first time Sony has released a port of a 2015 game on pc (the last of us was a remake and this is likely a remaster). What's funny is they're still ignoring bloodborne (also came out in 2015).

It's become a hobby of mine to seeing twitter pc gamers seethe every single time Sony releases their older non-bloodborne games. It's hilarious and almost feels like they're doing it deliberately since it's so strange considering how popular fromsoft is on pc. There are entire twiiter accounts dedicatd to 'bloodborne pc' I urge everyone to see them to have a laugh.

Re: The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered (PS5) - A Near Perfect Package for New and Returning Fans

reek

Factions cancellation was the most dissapointing news of this generation particularly since it was done because of 'limited microtransaction potential' by bungie. I still believe it would have been the hit of the generation and shows why Sony's approach is so flawed which will become apparent once Bungie goes further downhill. To trust some 'number experts' than your best studio, sigh.

Also shows TLOU 3 will be the only NEW game that naughty dog 'the greatest playstation developer' release this generation (till 2028). TLOU IP will find even more success in the TV series realm (I'm fully confident that by the third season it'll be bigger than stranger things at its peak, and I predicted GOT's success when the first season's ninth episode aired) as well as the gaming realm, but the potential will now go forever unrealized.

I was hoping for a live service multiplayer since the day GTA V, TLOU 1 released and part of me has now given up gaming because of that news. Hope it has a risky closing third part again and not your 'typical aaa game' and the franchise closes out with a bang. All the best to Naughty Dog anyways.

Re: Former Call of Duty Dev Says Decisions Made by Bobby Kotick 'Made Our Games Worse'

reek

And he's going to be laughing all the way to the bank, working class can suck it for all he cares. While encouraging a million of the next generation kids to become the next Bobby Koticks.

Nature of public limited companies who have to answer to shareholders, hire a CEO like him who maximizes short term profit from the consumer base, keep your employees in line to keep the costs low, and find some obsessive fanbase who buys the same game each year by the millions.

Get sued? Hire an expensive lawyer. Bad publicity? Who cares, I got my millions as did the shareholders. Internet fanbase whines? Who cares, they're too niche to matter. The rest of the world (other industries in other countries) is full of Bobby Koticks, has always been full of Bobby Koticks and will remain full of Bobby Koticks and an angry internet tweet at the end isn't going to do much.

Re: The Last of Us Multiplayer Project Is Officially Cancelled

reek

They deliberately made it a 'had to be a single player developer or live service' news to keep their fans happy so the fans of ND can say ''ooh see what a good decision' instead of the otherwise predictable backlash. There's no reason they couldn't have given the live service portion to a limited subset of the team or even another studio similar to how bethesda does it with elder scrolls online or fallout 76.

The real reason is that bungie didn't see 'profit/microtransaction potential', told this to Sony, who shut it down. Bungie, who are almost definitely going to get taken over by Sony anyways because they're not even making a profit themselves.

So sad about this. Was looking for this more than any other game this generation. Sony's deluded if they think they'll land a live service hit with a focus on aggressive microtransactions, without a naughty dog level of quality.
