That isn't the full picture, though. I suggest turning the saddle 180 for a better view of the road to success for PlayStation.
The success of PS5 is explained very well by a number of factors:
PS4 popularity: Phil Spencer's grief is that most people settled into a platform with PS4. People are not abandoning their digital trove of former games.
Brand loyalty: The point of the very well written article is that SONY has put in hard work since PS1 with a worldwide strategy and has been very visible in Europe. If people need 1 console, they choose what brand they are loyal to. Newtimers are looking to their peers for a direction. Most will then pick PlayStation.
Better Games: The 1st party and Playstation-exclusive lineup is better than Nintendo and Microsoft. Microsoft has improved and own enough studios, but they seem to be overpaying their developers as the game quality isn't quite comparable.
Easy-entry: PC is for rich people or their kids. Everyone can own a console, though. Even if it ain't gonna be current-gen for some kids.
Innovation: DualSense and PSVR 2 looks good on paper. I am less sure of this, but I feel like a direct comparison between Xbox and PS5 leaves MS in the dust.
Personally I don't want SONY's attention diverted away from console- and VR development. So, not VITA 2, thanks. However, I would like to see the Portal come out with an iterative update including the option to download and play-without-streaming smaller, less graphically demanding games.
In my opinion, the streaming app is amazing. I open the app on my work laptop and attach a cabled controller and can get a very good experience via wifi outside of home (and also home, obviously). I set it up at a family dinner recently and had my nephews lose it with awe. They thought it was playing natively. They sat and played for hours.
So, for everyone except the ones willing to pay big bucks for the best possible solutions, I highly recommend the app.
I would love it if you actually supported VR. Took the time to play these games and offer insightful commentary, interviews and tips. You know... journalism. Actually, hold on, you probably don't know.
And before you ask, yes, busting your balls makes me feel... hopeful.
PS4 has a truly special catalogue of games. I don't think I could rank my list. So, in no particular order:
Red Dead Redemption 2 - for the sheer magnitude/detail of the open world. Days Gone - the tech behind those hordes were amazing and the story was truly great. Destiny - thrust me into a world of competive gaming and cooperative experiences. A unique era of my gaming life. Best controls and story for any FPS. The Witcher 3 - an unparalleled experience of medieval fantasy. The pinnacle of game creation. Resident Evil 7 VR - a transformative experience, hinting at the future of gaming. A VR master piece. Kingdom Come Deliverance - A master piece of a historical game which made the past come alive for me and taught me so much. A true roleplaying/immersive experience for which I am so grateful for.
Honorable mentions: GTA V, TLOU I+II, MGS V, Horizon Zero Dawn, Spider-Man, Persona V, Control, Gwent, Uncharted 4, Slay The Spire, GOW, Ghost of Tshushima
(Some of these actually 'belong' to other platforms natively, but are lovingly included because they became available on the platform).
... Is that an attitude I am sensing? Soundheim, you bad boy!
The main reason I didn't like the story was that the marketing played at an entirely different story only to ... how do I say it without saying it ... serve up an entirely different (redacted) who committed an attrocious and cowardly act in the very beginning. And the end... dragged on like never-ending conflicts seem to do.
What is 'selling extremely well' by your standards? And when I say struggling, I am referring to the game in development limbo and their apparent lack of original IP. Commentary will change with the circumstances and I think their little upgrade of Part II will alleviate any financial concern, but not the artistic concern.
I will repeat: it remains a very polarising game Many were very vocal both before release (which I completely ignored, spoilers too). When I however played the game, I felt compelled to exercise my right to criticise the narrative which really ruined much of my experience.
Now, we see ND repackaging it. I thought it was PS5 already🫣
I feel like I played TLOU2 on PS5 already, which makes this baffling to me. It seems highly likely that a multiplayer is bundled in, though. If it is very good, I hope people who bought on PS5 already aren't charged much.
In the midst of ND struggling after launching a polarising game with a narrative many consider a catastrophe and a studio that is struggling to push out games, he is supposed to be applauded?
Thanks for that input! It is true, I think, that the potential success of this device night spawn iterative improvements in the coming years.
My 'use case' begs for it to be able to play the games offline, but if everyone loves it and they push a small deck-like upgrade, I might be tempted. As for now, I will wait and see what happens.
What am I playing this weekend? The same I play every weekend, Pinky!
Flatscreen: Cyberpunk 2077: I am trying to take over the world in Night City. I am soooo impressed with the city itself. It is the best living world I've encountered. Backlog of alternative choices: BG3, Forbidden West, etc.
PSVR 2: GT7: The game just got an update with a snowtrack, better AI and new cars and menus. So, they're adding life to my biggest obstacle in clearing other VR games. Backlog: RE8, WD:S&S.
PS PLUS: I am lapsing this service, so even though Cyberpunk is consuming my life, I might try and hateplay some of the titles I will soon not be able to play. I have subbed for a very long time (5 years maybe) so my library should be (is) insane. The thing is, though, I struggle to think of a single title I NEED to play before it is too late.
Bottom-line: I can't keep up with the avid gamers in here, who seem to play and finish new games every week. Whenever I hear this site trash PSVR 2 I have to think: How did you seriously get the time to play through all PSVR 2 content!?
Considering how the OLD PS4 still gets blockbusters to this day, I will definitely hold on to my PS5 for a very, very long time. I invested in a PS4 Pro because I had a very old PS4 and I remember I felt a difference both in UI-speed and game performance, but it is the assertion that game development are held back that will probably make me very conservative in terms of replacing my beast of a console.
I am hooked, line and sinkers. I want to know what they want to tell me. I am curious to see how good the new Dragon Age game and this coming Mass Effect will be and if they are similar enough to them for my taste. But yeah, I am very patient, so take your time and make it well🤝
Excellent👌 Honestly, I will speak out as a 'fanboy' against Xbox, but I love Phil. Phil might have to say things I don't want to hear, but I like him. I feel included.
My comment is about whether or not it is a good decision to listen to anyone at Bungie. Whoever were with Bungie at the conception and development of the original game is probably LONG GONE so now it is some dead beat microtransactor with a specialty in vaulting that they sent out. My comment will age very fast when/if Concord becomes a smashhit and they actually employed the Messiah.
Imagine Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann visiting Insomnia and shutting down Spider-Man 2 because it does not have an annoying character that kills Peter Parker in the first hour of the game.
Polyphony created an amazing experience (in VR) and I am so impressed that they are keeping the title alive instead of selling us GT8 like the Forza developer does every year or so
For me, the bad news coming from SONY has been somewhat consistent in the past few years. But all the sector are laying off across the board. Delays have been coming for the last few years too. As if the market is saturated right now. As if the strategy is to dripfeed titles to secure maximum engagement short and long term.
Backlogger's note: I feel like I never have to buy any new games ever again, because I will never finish my backlog. I keep trying PS Plus-titles and liking them, so it is going to be great for me when the sub runs out forcing me to focus on what I already have.
HFW (I need to finish playing Forbidden West before I move on to Spidey or Kratos)
Cyberpunk + Phantom DLC (I am playing this and just loving all the gigs available!)
Baldur's Gate 3 (so entertaining, but I left it hanging for Cyberpunk which I've waited for since that trailer showcasing the Trauma Team. They finally delivered greatness and so the immaculate BG3 will wait for me).
PSVR2 if I have a chance with GT7, RE8 and Walking Dead.
Gotham Knight is a game I played some of and liked it.
However, many games are so good coming out of the gate that they pull buyers to them by the sheer scale of magnetism, so they also, somehow, are able to turn a profit.
I saw this clown on Reddit trying to convince people he platted the game after 14 hours 🤣 The account was deleted soon after the attempt blew up in his face.
I think people are less likely to believe in ***** these days.
I just tried out Gotham Knights which scored 7 - it was a good game, but I expect Spidey to be of a much higher quality (yes, higher than 8).
PlayStation Universe - very similar site but without this marvelous comment section - has the game to be an outright tenner (10). The philosophy behind the score is that everything is bigger, better and faster which equates into a higher score.
Most people don't need two PS5 consoles and so people in here are already sold. The slim is for the new PS5 owners who are relatively spoiled for choice, or the enthusiast convincing himself to get one for the bed room. Why would the slim make a big splash, though?
Wait, there are one who says Nintendo gets special points from their affiliate sites, so I guess the strawman-builder gets exactly 1 (one) straw to build the man. Get in there!
Not one user sceptical of the final scoring has said or indirectly suggested that the scoring is too low because Nintendo exists, so that is some strawman😂
Beware: The following is a much a sincere criticism as it is a form of feedback/discussion.
This site's moderation revels in engagement and I guess the hot take in this review is that more, better and faster scores lower. Then, the rebuttal that it should be more difficult to score higher coming off two successful entries before it. As long as there are far worse games out there scoring 8's on this site, I will not exactly be happy with the editorial line. Also, indies are generally awarded higher scores for much less, which speaks volumes.
The conclusion still stands: this is a better game even after the original's patches and reworks. I am putting this game on my to-do list which is long and contains Forbidden West (I own it, but stopped playing about 20%-40% in without any real reason), GOW: Ragnarok (don't own, but I actually like to have some true quality gaming in the bank made richer by patches, updates and DLC.
I hope to contribute to Spidey's continued success but I am not in a rush. Too many games! And Cyberpunk 2077 has wrestled my gaming time and attention to the point where I just had to buy the DLC.
I have replaced my PS5 controller because of drift. Unfortunately, in Denmark the warranty is partly handled by the company that sold me the PS5 (EL-Giganten) and they 'forgot' to register my replacement controller which very quickly after my warranty ended (should have been extended if they did the paperwork) developed drift leaving me with an almost unusable controller in most games. And I don't intend to reward SONY for bad controllers by buying more, so I am just playing remote on my phone or games that eliminate the drift... somewhat. I would like to hear how to fix with rubbing alcohol.
So, no controller and soon no PS plus. It seems to me the next step is removing my credit card so I can't buy any new games and then I might be done after finishing the backlog.
I recently tried Odin Sphere. While I can appreciate the game, this genre is not for me and would feel like a chore to play. I am more into 13 sentinels because of its narrative focus.
I am not really into the lineup. On top of a maybe spectacular 2023 then 2024 might just be a filler year. I don't personally need it to be stacked since I have an embarrassment of a backlog to clear.
I want to replay Cyberpunk which I never got around to finishing - should I get the DLC I wonder... I don't have to decide if I revert 'back' to new game or old save, I guess. Should I trust CDPR and restart even though I have played the start 3 times!?
1: The game had a short development time according to Bloomberg 2: It has been selling well according to sales charts and inside gaming sites, reports say 40 million USD in the first week. 3: They can keep selling the game for a very long time using patches and DLC, eventually sales to entice the market's consumers to buy. 4: An estimated 300 mil. to put on gamepass. In my humble opinion, it wouldn't hurt the sales so much if only they made sure it's tenure is only 6 m-1y. Maybe upwards of half the players that already have paid full price would not have.
Conclusion: Let M$ pay for game development. It is a very good deal
I would have to be paid to play as Kamala Khan! I love the idea of representation in games and bringing diversity and new talent to the forefront (and champion the need for it in offline conversation) and yet when confronted with the prospect of having to play as a previously unknown superhero without an interesting story (the fish-out-of-water composition) my toes bend the wrong way😂 Sorry, not sorry
I feel a little pity (I am actually laughing and looking slightly down at the negativity, but if I didn't hide the truth in this magical parenthesis it would get moderated away) for those who were let down.
Baby Steps were very funny. I can see people laughing together and playing this while having beers. The protagonist will probably give off an uncanny feeling to certain gamers (in here).
Re: 4 VR is the innovation people are critizing the show for being devoid off. They are honing their craftsmanship and building upon what they've learnt so far.
Spidey has the critics in awe. Well deserved.
Helldivers were unfortunately marred by the fake team chat. Especially the woman in the end screaming they were being beaten and need a strategy, then they push a button and the monster goes boom🤦♀️
This is awesome. I have yet to make any progress in RE:8 because once I arrive in the castle I have not found out how to progress. Apparently, I have to find a key in my inventory to a locked door SOMEwhere in the castle, but I digress.
@Ainu20 Sure! It is absurd. It is still such a big development that I feel it impacts my relationship with PlayStation. Don't now how to put it otherwise
I am going to say that this state of play could be anything from terrible to ok.
The worst ever being the one on Suicide Squad, where we saw such a mess that the game itself either died right out or were put in a coma. Assisted Suicide Squad.
This version of SONY is making mistakes left and right
Lost the legal battle and allowed MS to consume Bethesda and Activision, effectively removing great western roleplaying games from a solo-craving audience.
Has made its own PS Plus service obsolete by raising the prices way, way too high. I cancelled my subscription and will do without the mediocre games I claimed for rentals. I am not coming back.
Cancels Days Gone II, idiotic!
Purchases ***** glamour PR person Jade Raymond and funds her ***** studio putting out a garbage shooter together with a push for GAAS with a whole host of other meaningless games which undermines the old strategy of good single-player games. I am still waiting to see the world's reaction to her fairgame$. To me, the title is a meta-comment on her status as a gold digger.
ND ruined with a title that is not coming out and a TLOU2 which story altogether ruined the experience for me.
So yeah, I have a ps5 and now I will only buy discounted games and I don't care about not having access to old PS plus games.
I am interested in trying out Generation Zero. I expect it to be as countless other stream-library titles I've tried where I play maybe half an hour and then never touch again. It saves me money and eliminates my nagging feeling to try these games.
PS Plus Extra has also given me plenty of great games: Detroit: Become Human, Batman, Slay the Spire, X-COM 2, and so on.
Huh - I read through the comments and am shocked to see everyone on the same page more or less.
1. People think it is a steep, undeserved price hike 2. Many want to downgrade to essential
I think I will also consider downgrading or discontinuing the service altogether since my friends and I never game together online anymore. Also, SONY has run out of bangers to put on. Every month I said: Wow, are they putting this on? I actually had less fun actually trying them. This confirms my bias: I should stick to buying games. (There are some caveats to my opinions and evaluation of the service, because overall I am satisfied with the deals I've gotten so far).
I think that they don't care, they will more likely fear that ordinary people (not devoted fans on this site) notice the price hike and react, hence the announcement being wrapped into a presentation of (very bad) games.
I am still collecting newbie cars in GT, am stuck in the first castle area of RE8 and have JUST encountered zombies in the Walking Dead. So some VR players might be a little slow at completing their games compared to a normal completion rate.
Too often, I stream to my phone playing Slay the Spire and X-COM 2, so they and the status of father, husband and working man creates barriers that prevent me from using VR.
But man! I love the headset and recently played Bestsaber and Pistol Whip at a party - truly amazing.
it is their choice to get more security or scrap planned content on the basis of manchildren misbehaving online. However, their reasoning seems absurd after a small linguistic analysis.
1: Swearing to '*****' seems to be a ironic way of swearing to a deity. '*****' as a word can function as any word class the user wants and mostly used in anger or for comedic effect. In this case, it is clearly the latter.
2: The reference is presumably some kind of move, the manchild wishes to use in game. Thus, the threat functions as a referential to what is the main idea transmitted in that slab of a tweet.
3: Still, it is beyond fair that the team and the world as a whole pushes back on toxic communication. To take all the fans hostage and increase costs due to a bad interpretation of a tweet from some dark corner of the internet (or maybe it is quite visible, I don't have X) seems, to me, out of proportion.
I knew about Yong and had reservations about the quality of his commentary on YouTube. He seems to be trying to drum up drama, mostly, but probably have been voicing genuine criticisms and opinions as well.
So, I am the type of guy who would disqualify him on name only, but I like that he is honestly trying to appeal to doubters by releasing more evidence.
The sound byte was OKAY - if the sound directors know what they're doing it could be an impressive performance in the end.
@Intr1n5ic Maybe, I stand to be corrected. I was right about that scammer who swindled himself and studio to money. Arguably, their demo is more than what Haven has brought to the table. As soon as they produce news or games, my comments, and others, will truly be erased. I will be the first to acknowledge the queen (of Assassin's)

So, no controller and soon no PS plus. It seems to me the next step is removing my credit card so I can't buy any new games and then I might be done after finishing the backlog.
Re: PS5, PS4 RPG Unicorn Overlord Is Jaw-Dropping in Fresh Gameplay Screenshots
I recently tried Odin Sphere. While I can appreciate the game, this genre is not for me and would feel like a chore to play. I am more into 13 sentinels because of its narrative focus.
Re: PlayStation's 2024 Release Schedule Is Already a Joke
I am not really into the lineup. On top of a maybe spectacular 2023 then 2024 might just be a filler year. I don't personally need it to be stacked since I have an embarrassment of a backlog to clear.
Re: Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty (PS5) - Excellent Expansion Is Cyberpunk's Blood and Wine
I want to replay Cyberpunk which I never got around to finishing - should I get the DLC I wonder... I don't have to decide if I revert 'back' to new game or old save, I guess. Should I trust CDPR and restart even though I have played the start 3 times!?
Re: Xbox Documents Reveal Staggering Cost of Bringing Games to Game Pass, PS Plus
Developers need money.
EA's business case:
1: The game had a short development time according to Bloomberg
2: It has been selling well according to sales charts and inside gaming sites, reports say 40 million USD in the first week.
Re: Marvel's Avengers Is Dirt Cheap Ahead of Getting Thanos Snapped Later This Month
Re: Poll: Was Sony's Latest State of Play Worth the Wait?
The show was very great in my opinion.
It definitely exceeded my expectations.
Rebirth looked great as well 👍
Re: Hands On: Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 Update Is an Outstanding, Game-Changing Overhaul
Nice to hear, Shogun👍
I have restarted this game without finishing so many times. But I feel like I have to restart it once again.
Re: Capcom Shares Deep Dive into All the Upcoming Resident Evil 4 DLC
This is awesome. I have yet to make any progress in RE:8 because once I arrive in the castle I have not found out how to progress. Apparently, I have to find a key in my inventory to a locked door SOMEwhere in the castle, but I digress.
Will get RE:4 when I eventually finish VIIIage

What is the word on how to play it? Anyone with a lack for space that plays this?
Re: State of Play Livestream Revealed for Thursday, a Focus on Indie and Third-Party Games
@Ainu20
Sure! It is absurd. It is still such a big development that I feel it impacts my relationship with PlayStation. Don't now how to put it otherwise
Re: State of Play Livestream Revealed for Thursday, a Focus on Indie and Third-Party Games
I am going to say that this state of play could be anything from terrible to ok.
The worst ever being the one on Suicide Squad, where we saw such a mess that the game itself either died right out or were put in a coma. Assisted Suicide Squad.
This version of SONY is making mistakes left and right
So yeah, I have a ps5 and now I will only buy discounted games and I don't care about not having access to old PS plus games.
Re: PS Plus Essential Games for September 2023 Announced
I am interested in trying out Generation Zero.
I expect it to be as countless other stream-library titles I've tried where I play maybe half an hour and then never touch again. It saves me money and eliminates my nagging feeling to try these games.
PS Plus Extra has also given me plenty of great games: Detroit: Become Human, Batman, Slay the Spire, X-COM 2, and so on.
Re: PS Plus Essential, Extra, Premium Price Increases Announced by Sony
Huh - I read through the comments and am shocked to see everyone on the same page more or less.
1. People think it is a steep, undeserved price hike
I do look forward to trying Generation Zero.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 490
I am gonna fire up GT on psvr2!!!
Still collecting cars.
Re: Green Hell's PSVR2 Port Offers Next Level Terror for Survival Enthusiasts on PS5
This title I have been looking forward to!
Re: Tekken 8 Boss Katsuhiro Harada Hits Back at 'Silly Threats' from Irate Eddy Gordo Fans
it is their choice to get more security or scrap planned content on the basis of manchildren misbehaving online.
Re: Like a Dragon Fandom Divided After Hearing Kiryu's New English Voice
I knew about Yong and had reservations about the quality of his commentary on YouTube. He seems to be trying to drum up drama, mostly, but probably have been voicing genuine criticisms and opinions as well.
So, I am the type of guy who would disqualify him on name only, but I like that he is honestly trying to appeal to doubters by releasing more evidence.
The sound byte was OKAY - if the sound directors know what they're doing it could be an impressive performance in the end.
Re: Concrete Genie Developer PixelOpus Is Shutting Down
@Intr1n5ic
Maybe, I stand to be corrected. I was right about that scammer who swindled himself and studio to money. Arguably, their demo is more than what Haven has brought to the table. As soon as they produce news or games, my comments, and others, will truly be erased. I will be the first to acknowledge the queen (of Assassin's)
