Re: Poll: Did You Buy a PS5 Pro?

£700 for the gains wasn't enough justification for me, as a father and provider. I will however watch carefully as a precursor to PS6, and then prepare to shell out next gen. I will be led by software however, this gen has been mostly dissappointing.

Re: Three New Black Ops 6 Maps Teased for Season One

Shakybeeves

Loving this cod, so three new multiplayer maps already is amazing! Extraction and Hideout look promising. Love the focus on Multiplayer so far, Infinity Ward just sidelined MP for BR. We used to get one MP map per season! So as said, amazing support so far 👌🏻

I totally agree @jrt87, there are two notions that reviewers propagated that lead me to question if they even played the game.
1. It's a boss rush. No it isn't by any stretch, large spiderweb-like areas, with loop backs, NPC's and secrets.
2. It's not as difficult as a soulslike. I disagree, it has the same variance of difficulty you see in souls. White Noble was a savage (I'm only in Chapter 2) and then you have plenty of bosses on a sliding scale from there - Tiger Vanguard was a sturdy challenge too. If you consider DS1 it similarly has bosses you can beat first time (an obvious example being Pinwheel, but even Taurus Demon or Moonlight Butterfly, fit that brief).

Re: Sony Boss Says 'PCs Are Difficult to Set Up', Firm Will Focus on PS5

I read a large proportion of comments stipulating that we should be comfortable with the price based on its peformance (for the money) and plug-and-play properties. But we seem to be conveniently ignoring another point... console gaming has predominately been the lowest barrier of entry into AAA gaming. It now feels like we're on the precipice of every hardcore gaming choice becoming expensive. Its not equitable and makes me concerned about the potential price of PS6. Even to buy a high spec smartphone you're looking at about £1000. So you see my point, and as I write this I realise XBOX sees this point all to clearly, which means the transition to next-gen consoles could be very interesting indeed.
PS6 = Premium
XBOX = Affordable Subscription model that streams to ANY device 👀

Re: Don't Worry, You Can Add an Ultra HD Disc Drive to PS5 Pro

Shakybeeves

@UnlimitedSevens interesting... I had no idea PS4 Pro sold anywhere near that! So yeh potentially a dominant technology flex, PSSR for example has already got in my head somewhat. A console native/specific AI upscaling technology is undeniably appealing for enthusiasts (I include myself in said camp). Their branding is incredibly strong and PSSR just adds to the Playstation proposition.

Re: Talking Point: Is PS5 Pro Way Too Expensive?

Shakybeeves

I agree, I was playing Spiderman 2 at 120fps on my monitor and frankly it is a staggering experience... so I could spend another £700 and get higher resolution subsequently burning all my physical games on a ceremonial farewell pyre. Whoop-de-fluckin-dooo!

Re: Black Myth: Wukong Prompts PS5 Sales Explosion in China

I am loving it! Everything I imagined/wanted it to be so far... spent about an hour trying to take down the Wandering Wight right off the bat (which I did and the dopamine hit was real!!). Despite having elements that feel familiar, the game feels so unusual and special. The boss design is unreal. I'm so excited about the AAA future now this is out and games like Phantom Blade Zero are on the horizon.

Re: Reaction: Sony's Billion Dollar Bungie Buyout Is Looking More and More Like a Blunder

@Zriggin1 I see what you're saying mate, in terms of staples that thrive on wide market appeal/casuals. But Sony has incredibly strong brand and IP - Spiderman, Last of Us, Uncharted, God of War, even new entrants like Ghost of Tsushima, that also have wide market appeal. I do think Sony need to focus on what makes Playstation great. And in addition it concerns me that I might never play a new Fallout game on the blue box again, the only Bethesda IP I have a strong connection to, I was pleasantly surprised Doom Dark Ages is coming our way, so I hold out hope.

Re: Random: PS3 Last Seventh Generation Console Standing with Functional Storefront

Shakybeeves

I loved the PS3 era, it's imperfection and eccentricities make it stand out in my mind. I remember getting completely immersed in the necrotic wasteland of Fallout 3. Marvelling at the train level in Uncharted 2 and belly laughing at frenetic moments in Little Big Planet 2 Multiplayer. And then, it culminated in the release of the Last of Us! Which basically foretold the generational quality to come in PS4. Just a whimsical time for me in gaming, before I had big responsibilities.

Re: Poll: Are You Sick of Soulslike Games?

Shakybeeves

I'm fine with more Soulslite (trademarked 🤓) akin to Wukong and Phantom Blade. I'm tiring of brutal difficulty after circa 10 years of playing Fromsoftware. I love the proposition of the aforementioned titles, elements inspired by souls, but with all the relentless friction smoothed off; difficulty options, power fantasy vs powerful enemies, forgiving checkpoints.

Re: Random: Larian's Attention to Detail in Baldur's Gate 3 Remains Unrivaled

Shakybeeves

Put in circa 50 hours well into Act 2, on a campaign with my wife and never went back, I keep meaning to start from the beginning on my own, but it feels like such an undertaking. This exact curse occurred with Divinity OS 2 for me too. Say it quietly, I actually preferred the combat in Divinity with pure AP, instead of random D&D frenetic dice rolls. Missing hits with 80% chance is hugely frustrating. I actually applied perks to my warrior that would increase the predictability and success of my dice rolls, which is a bit silly really when I should be focussing on role playing expression. The game is staggeringly deep, I just tired of the combat.

Re: FromSoftware Boss Puts Elden Ring Difficulty Discourse to Bed, Once and For All

Shakybeeves

I've always loved the sheer challenge of his art, however the fundamental design of ER poses a risk to the form. I personally feel the boss design has become gratuitous and lacking the subtle finesse of prior titles, as the difficulty (see roll catch baiting delays as an example) has been obtusely elevated to account for spirit ashes. I was watching that dancing lion fight and his moves were sporadically unreadable, aswell as his attacks being replete with three different elements no less. So the fact Miyazaki says moving forwards their games will balance freedom and difficulty, just makes me think 'sh!+ it's over...' The new core design principles are not well calibrated to the lone sword & board that wants to forego spirit ashes and other grandiose measures, essentially you're in for a dire time. It's amusing because the game that preceded it was the antithesis of ER, a solipsistically minded, ruthless challenge - Sekiro.

Re: Ex-Sony Boss Shawn Layden Explains How to Make Games Faster, Cheaper

Shakybeeves

I have said for ages now, advanced NPC AI and physics systems, ergo greater interactivity would excite me far more than shinier graphics. As an example I remember playing FEAR way back on PC, and it always stays with me how immersive and frankly shocking it was that the enemy would vault over obstacles and flank me with unnerving sentience. Alot of games opt for minimal interactivity and top tier graphics, leading to it feeling like you're walking through a tightly curated painting (Hellblade 2 being a good example of this - on rails/nice to look at). When it comes to physics I remember playing Red Dead Redemption 1 and shooting an enemy in the foot at the top of a rickety set of wooden stairs and the way he crumpled and folded down the stairs was absolutely incredible (and this was PS3!), yet these physics systems seemed to be toned down/less affecting in the sequel - probably because fidelity was prioritised. In short - games are about interactivity, how can the industry pioneer in this regard?

Re: Lords of the Fallen 2 Is In Development, Targeting a 2026 Release on PS5

Shakybeeves

I've given up on it, the umbral asepct is overused and makes it a tiresome experience. The aesthetic is great, some of the bosses too, but the 100% accuracy projectiles and ceaseless mobs, that tether ruthlessly are just back breaking work for declining payoff. All of these pain points compounded multiplacatively in Umbral, hence my point. I literally tried to finish this last weekend and in a moment of clarity said, 'why am I doing this!?'.
